Jeremiah Brought Up from the Cistern

38 And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the (A)son of Shelemiah, and (B)Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard the words that Jeremiah was speaking to all the people, saying, 2 “Thus says Yahweh, ‘He who (C)stays in this city will die by the (D)sword and by the famine and by the pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live and have his own (E)life as spoil and stay alive.’ 3 Thus says Yahweh, ‘This city will certainly be (F)given into the hand of the military force of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.’” 4 Then the (G)officials said to the king, “Now let this man be put to death, inasmuch as he is (H)making the hands of the men of war who remain in this city as well as the hands of all the people limp, by speaking such words to them; for this man (I)is not seeking peace for this people but rather calamity.” 5 So King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your [a]hands; for the king (J)can do nothing against you.” 6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the [b](K)cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only (L)mire, and Jeremiah sank into the mire. 7 But (M)Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, [c]a (N)eunuch, while he was in the king’s palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. Now the king was sitting in the (O)Gate of Benjamin; 8 and Ebed-melech went out from the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying, 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the cistern; and he [d]will die right where he is because of the famine, for there is (P)no more bread in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take in your hand thirty men from here and bring up Jeremiah the prophet from the cistern before he dies.” 11 So Ebed-melech took the men in his hand and went into the king’s palace to a place beneath the storeroom and took from there worn-out clothes and worn-out rags and let them down by ropes into the cistern to Jeremiah. 12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Now put these worn-out clothes and rags under your armpits under the ropes”; and Jeremiah did so. 13 So they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and brought him up from the cistern, and Jeremiah stayed in the (Q)court of the guard.

Zedekiah Sends for Jeremiah

14 Then King Zedekiah (R)sent and [e]had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance that is in the house of Yahweh; and the king said to Jeremiah, “I am going to (S)ask you something; do not hide anything from me.” 15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “(T)If I tell you, will you not certainly put me to death? Besides, if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 But King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in (U)secret saying, “As Yahweh lives, who made this [f](V)life for us, surely I will not put you to death, nor will I give you over to the hand of (W)these men who are seeking your [g]life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says Yahweh (X)God of hosts, the (Y)God of Israel, ‘If you will indeed (Z)go out to the [h]officers of the king of Babylon, then [i]you will live, this city will not be burned with fire, and you and your household will live. 18 But if you will (AA)not go out to the [j]officers of the king of Babylon, then this city (AB)will be given over to the hand of the Chaldeans; and they will burn it with fire, and (AC)you yourself will not escape from their hand.’” 19 Then King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I (AD)am anxious because of the Jews who have [k](AE)gone over to the Chaldeans, lest they give me over into their hand and they (AF)deal severely with me.” 20 But Jeremiah said, “They will not give you over. Please (AG)listen to the voice of Yahweh in what I am saying to you, that it may go (AH)well with you and [l](AI)you may live. 21 But if you keep refusing to go out, this is the word which Yahweh has shown me: 22 ‘And behold, all of the (AJ)women who have remained in the house of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the [m]officers of the king of Babylon; and behold, those women will say,

“[n]Your close friends
Have misled and overpowered you;
While your feet were sunk in the mud,
They turned back.”

23 And they will also bring out all your wives and your (AK)sons to the Chaldeans, and (AL)you yourself will not escape from their hand, but will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon, and (AM)this city will be burned with fire.’”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know about these words and you will not die. 25 But if the (AN)officials hear that I have talked with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you are to say to them, ‘I was (AO)presenting my petition before the king, not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him. So he told them in accordance with all these words which the king had commanded; and they ceased speaking with him since the [o]conversation had not been overheard. 28 So Jeremiah (AP)stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was captured.

38 Sefatja de zoon van Mattan, Gedalja de zoon van Pashur, Juchal de zoon van Selemja en Pashur de zoon van Malkia hoorden dat ik tegen iedereen bleef zeggen: 2 "Dit zegt de Heer: Als jullie hier in de stad blijven, zullen jullie sterven door het zwaard, de honger of de pest. Maar als jullie je overgeven aan de Babyloniërs, zullen jullie in leven blijven. 3 Want de Heer zegt: Het is zeker dat deze stad door de Babyloniërs veroverd zal worden." 4 Toen zeiden de leiders tegen de koning: "Laat deze man alstublieft ter dood brengen. Want hij ontmoedigt de soldaten die in de stad zijn overgebleven en de mensen die hier wonen. Hij heeft beslist geen goede bedoelingen. Hij wil ons kwaad doen." 5 Koning Zedekia zei: "Doe maar met hem wat jullie willen. Ik kan jullie toch niet tegenhouden." 6 Toen stopten ze me in de put op de binnenplaats van het paleis. Die put was naar de kroonprins genoemd en heette de 'Malkia-put'. Er stond geen water in, maar wel een dikke laag modder. Ze lieten me aan touwen naar beneden zakken en ik zonk langzaam weg in de modder.

7 In het paleis van de koning was een Ethiopische hofdienaar die Ebed-Melech heette. Hij hoorde ervan dat ze me in de put gestopt hadden. De koning was op dat moment bij de Benjaminpoort. 8 Ebed-Melech ging naar de koning en zei tegen hem: 9 "Mijn heer de koning, deze mannen hebben iets vreselijks met Jeremia gedaan. Ze hebben hem in de put gegooid. Maar hij zou toch wel gestorven zijn, want er is immers geen brood meer in de stad." 10 Toen zei de koning tegen Ebed-Melech: "Neem van hier 30 mannen mee en trek de profeet Jeremia uit de put, voordat het te laat is." 11 Toen ging Ebed-Melech met de 30 mannen terug naar het paleis. Uit de ruimte onder de voorraadkamer haalde hij oude, versleten kleren. Die liet hij aan touwen in de put zakken. 12 Ebed-Melech zei tegen mij: "Doe de lappen onder uw oksels, onder de touwen." 13 Dat deed ik. Ze trokken me aan de touwen op uit de put en brachten me terug in de gevangenis op de binnenplaats van het paleis.

Jeremia moet weer bij de koning komen

14 Toen liet koning Zedekia mij bij zich brengen bij de derde ingang van de tempel van de Heer. De koning zei tegen mij: "Ik wil je iets vragen, en je moet me eerlijk antwoord geven." 15 Maar ik antwoordde: "Als ik u eerlijk antwoord geef, weet ik zeker dat u mij zal doden. En als ik u raad geef, zult u niet naar mij luisteren." 16 Toen zwoer de koning mij in het geheim: "Ik zweer bij de Heer die ons het leven heeft gegeven: ik zal je niet doden en ik zal je niet uitleveren aan de mannen die je dood willen hebben." 17 Toen zei ik tegen Zedekia: "Dit zegt de Heer, de God van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Als u zich vrijwillig overgeeft aan de koning van Babel, zult u in leven blijven. En Jeruzalem zal niet in brand gestoken worden. U en uw hele familie zullen in leven blijven. 18 Maar als u zich niet overgeeft, zullen de Babyloniërs deze stad veroveren en in brand steken. En u zal ook in hun macht komen." 19 Maar koning Zedekia antwoordde: "Ik ben bang voor de Judeeërs die naar de Babyloniërs zijn overgelopen. Want ik ben bang dat de Babyloniërs mij aan hen zullen uitleveren. Zij zullen me bespotten." 20 Ik zei: "Dat zal niet gebeuren. Doe alstublieft wat de Heer zegt. Dan zal het goed met u aflopen en zult u in leven blijven. 21 De Heer heeft mij laten weten wat er gebeurt als u zich niet overgeeft. 22 De Heer zei tegen mij: Alle vrouwen die nog in het paleis zijn, zullen worden meegenomen naar de leiders van Babel. Deze vrouwen zullen u beschuldigen: 'Uw vrienden hebben u bedrogen. Nu u in de modder wegzakt, laten ze u in de steek!' 23 Al uw vrouwen en zonen zullen meegenomen worden naar Babylonië. U zelf ook. U zal de gevangene van de koning van Babel worden en deze stad zal in brand gestoken worden."

24 Koning Zedekia zei: "Als je ook maar tegen íemand zegt wat we hier besproken hebben, laat ik je doden. 25 Als de leiders er achter komen dat ik met je gesproken heb, zullen ze willen weten wat er gezegd is. Ze zullen naar je toe komen en je met de dood bedreigen om te weten wat we besproken hebben. Zeg dan tegen hen: 26 'Ik heb de koning gesmeekt om mij niet opnieuw op te sluiten in het huis van Jonatan. Want daar ga ik dood.' 27 Toen de leiders mij kwamen ondervragen, gaf ik het antwoord dat de koning mij bevolen had. Toen lieten ze me met rust, want verder wist niemand ervan. 28 En ik bleef in de gevangenis op de binnenplaats van het paleis tot de dag dat Jeruzalem werd veroverd door de Babyloniërs.

Jeremiah in the Dungeon

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, (A)Jucal[a] the son of Shelemiah, and (B)Pashhur the son of Malchiah (C)heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord: (D)‘He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’ 3 Thus says the Lord: (E)‘This city shall surely be (F)given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.’ ”

4 Therefore the princes said to the king, “Please, (G)let this man be put to death, for thus he [b]weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the [c]welfare of this people, but their harm.”

5 Then Zedekiah the king said, “Look, he is in your hand. For the king can do nothing against you.” 6 (H)So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah [d]the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 (I)Now Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, one of the [e]eunuchs, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon. When the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, 8 Ebed-Melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying: 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is (J)no more bread in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.” 11 So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old clothes and old rags, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12 Then Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Please put these old clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes.” And Jeremiah did so. 13 So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained (K)in the court of the prison.

Zedekiah’s Fears and Jeremiah’s Advice

14 Then Zedekiah the king sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance of the house of the Lord. And the king said to Jeremiah, “I will (L)ask you something. Hide nothing from me.”

15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.”

16 So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As the Lord lives, (M)who made our very souls, I will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you surely (N)surrender[f] (O)to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live; this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not [g]surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans; they shall burn it with fire, and (P)you shall not escape from their hand.’ ”

19 And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have (Q)defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they (R)abuse me.”

20 But Jeremiah said, “They shall not deliver you. Please, obey the voice of the Lord which I speak to you. So it shall be (S)well with you, and your soul shall live. 21 But if you refuse to [h]surrender, this is the word that the Lord has shown me: 22 ‘Now behold, all the (T)women who are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be surrendered to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say:

“Your close friends have [i]set upon you
And prevailed against you;
Your feet have sunk in the mire,
And they have [j]turned away again.”

23 ‘So they shall surrender all your wives and (U)children to the Chaldeans. (V)You shall not escape from their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.’ ”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king, and also what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you shall say to them, (W)‘I presented my request before the king, that he would not make me return (X)to Jonathan’s house to die there.’ ”

27 Then all the princes came to Jeremiah and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been heard. 28 Now (Y)Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

Jeremiah Thrown Into a Cistern

38 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur(A), Jehukal[a](B) son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, 2 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague,(C) but whoever goes over to the Babylonians[b] will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’(D) 3 And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”(E)

4 Then the officials(F) said to the king, “This man should be put to death.(G) He is discouraging(H) the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”

5 “He is in your hands,”(I) King Zedekiah answered. “The king can do nothing(J) to oppose you.”

6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard.(K) They lowered Jeremiah by ropes(L) into the cistern; it had no water in it,(M) only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.(N)

7 But Ebed-Melek,(O) a Cushite,[c] an official[d](P) in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,(Q) 8 Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him, 9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern,(R) where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread(S) in the city.”

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

11 So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes(T) to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12 Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, 13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(U)

Zedekiah Questions Jeremiah Again

14 Then King Zedekiah sent(V) for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord. “I am going to ask you something,” the king said to Jeremiah. “Do not hide(W) anything from me.”

15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.”

16 But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly(X) to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath,(Y) I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”(Z)

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender(AA) to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.(AB) 18 But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands(AC) of the Babylonians and they will burn(AD) it down; you yourself will not escape(AE) from them.’”

19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid(AF) of the Jews who have gone over(AG) to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me.”

20 “They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey(AH) the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well(AI) with you, and your life(AJ) will be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me: 22 All the women(AK) left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:

“‘They misled you and overcame you—
    those trusted friends(AL) of yours.
Your feet are sunk in the mud;(AM)
    your friends have deserted you.’

23 “All your wives and children(AN) will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape(AO) from their hands but will be captured(AP) by the king of Babylon; and this city will[e] be burned down.”(AQ)

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know(AR) about this conversation, or you may die. 25 If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’ 26 then tell(AS) them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house(AT) to die there.’”

27 All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.

28 And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard(AU) until the day Jerusalem was captured.
