³ Perhaps they will listen and each will turn^(A) from their evil ways. Then I will relent^(B) and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done.

⁷ Perhaps they will bring their petition^(A) before the Lord and will each turn^(B) from their wicked ways, for the anger^(C) and wrath pronounced against this people by the Lord are great.”

⁴ Do not be like your ancestors,^(A) to whom the earlier prophets^(B) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways^(C) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,^(D) declares the Lord.^{(E) 5} Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ But did not my words^(F) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?^(G)

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,^(H) just as he determined to do.’”^(I)

²² The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them ²³ until the Lord removed them from his presence,^(A) as he had warned^(B) through all his servants the prophets. So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland^(C) into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.
