Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

(A)My heart is broken within me;
    (B)all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
    like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and because of his holy words.
10 (C)For the land is full of adulterers;
    (D)because of the curse (E)the land mourns,
    and (F)the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
(G)Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.
11 (H)“Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
    even (I)in my house I have found their evil,
declares the Lord.
12 (J)Therefore their way shall be to them
    like slippery paths (K)in the darkness,
    into which they shall be driven and fall,
for I will bring disaster upon them
    (L)in the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.
13 In the prophets of (M)Samaria
    (N)I saw an unsavory thing:
(O)they prophesied by Baal
    (P)and led my people Israel astray.
14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
(Q)they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    (R)they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
(S)all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    (T)and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
(U)“Behold, I will feed them with bitter food
    (V)and give them (W)poisoned water to drink,
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, (X)filling you with vain hopes. (Y)They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, (Z)‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who (AA)stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, (AB)‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

18 For (AC)who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?
19 (AD)Behold, the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
(AE)a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
20 (AF)The anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and (AG)accomplished
    the intents of his heart.
(AH)In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

21 (AI)“I did not send the prophets,
    yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they prophesied.
22 (AJ)But if they had stood in my council,
    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
(AK)and they would have turned them from their evil way,
    and (AL)from the evil of their deeds.

23 (AM)“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? 24 (AN)Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. (AO)Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. 25 I have heard what the prophets have said (AP)who prophesy lies in my name, saying, (AQ)‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ 26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of (AR)the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, 27 who think to make my people forget my name (AS)by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their (AT)fathers forgot my name for Baal? 28 (AU)Let the prophet who has a dream (AV)tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. (AW)What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. 29 (AX)Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and (AY)like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? 30 (AZ)Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’ 32 Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and (BA)lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when (BB)I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord.

33 (BC)“When one of this people, or a prophet or a priest asks you, ‘What is the burden of the Lord?’ you shall say to them, ‘You are the burden,[a] and (BD)I will cast you off, declares the Lord.’ 34 And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ (BE)I will punish that man and his household. 35 Thus shall you say, every one to his neighbor and every one to his brother, ‘What has the Lord answered?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 36 But ‘the burden of the Lord’ you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man's own word, and (BF)you pervert the words of (BG)the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God. 37 Thus you shall say to the prophet, ‘What has the Lord answered you?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 38 But if you say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have said these words, “The burden of the Lord,” when I sent to you, saying, “You shall not say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’” 39 therefore, behold, I will surely lift you up[b] and (BH)cast you away from my presence, you and the city that I gave to you and your fathers. 40 (BI)And I will bring upon you everlasting reproach and (BJ)perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.’”

The Good Figs and the Bad Figs

24 (BK)After Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem (BL)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, together with (BM)the officials of Judah, the craftsmen, and the metal workers, and had brought them to Babylon, the Lord showed me this vision: behold, (BN)two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, (BO)like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had (BP)very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the Lord said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I said, “Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, (BQ)whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. (BR)I will set my eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. (BS)I will build them up, and not tear them down; (BT)I will plant them, and not pluck them up. (BU)I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord, (BV)and they shall be my people (BW)and I will be their God, (BX)for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

“But thus says the Lord: Like (BY)the bad figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten, so will I treat (BZ)Zedekiah the king of Judah, his officials, the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who (CA)dwell in the land of Egypt. I will make them (CB)a horror[c] to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be (CC)a reproach, (CD)a byword, (CE)a taunt, and (CF)a curse in all the places where I shall drive them. 10 And I will send (CG)sword, famine, and pestilence upon them, until they shall be utterly destroyed from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.”

Seventy Years of Captivity

25 (CH)The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: “For twenty-three years, (CI)from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken (CJ)persistently to you, (CK)but you have not listened. (CL)You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the Lord (CM)persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets, saying, (CN)‘Turn now, every one of you, (CO)from his evil way and evil deeds, and (CP)dwell upon the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever. (CQ)Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, (CR)or provoke me to anger (CS)with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’ (CT)Yet you have not listened to me, declares the Lord, (CU)that you might provoke me to anger (CV)with the work of your hands to your own harm.

“Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, (CW)behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (CX)my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, (CY)and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. 10 Moreover, (CZ)I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (DA)the grinding of the millstones and (DB)the light of the lamp. 11 (DC)This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and (DD)these nations shall serve the king of Babylon (DE)seventy years. 12 Then after (DF)seventy years are completed, (DG)I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, (DH)the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, (DI)making the land an everlasting waste. 13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written (DJ)in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 (DK)For many nations (DL)and great kings shall make slaves even of them, (DM)and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of the Lord's Wrath

15 Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: (DN)“Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of (DO)the sword that I am sending among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord's hand, (DP)and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 (DQ)Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, (DR)to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 (DS)Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20 and (DT)all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of (DU)the land of Uz and all the kings of (DV)the land of the Philistines ((DW)Ashkelon, (DX)Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of (DY)Ashdod); 21 (DZ)Edom, (EA)Moab, and the sons of (EB)Ammon; 22 all the kings of (EC)Tyre, all the kings of (ED)Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across (EE)the sea; 23 (EF)Dedan, (EG)Tema, (EH)Buz, and all who cut (EI)the corners of their hair; 24 all the (EJ)kings of Arabia and all the kings of (EK)the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of (EL)Elam, and all the kings of (EM)Media; 26 all the kings of (EN)the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of (EO)Babylon[d] shall drink.

27 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (EP)Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of (EQ)the sword that I am sending among you.’

28 “And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: (ER)You must drink! 29 For behold, (ES)I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, (ET)for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the Lord of hosts.’

30 “You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:

(EU)“‘The Lord will roar from on high,
    and from his holy habitation utter his voice;
he will roar mightily against his fold,
    (EV)and shout, like those who tread grapes,
    against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth,
    for (EW)the Lord has an indictment against the nations;
(EX)he is entering into judgment with all flesh,
    and the wicked he will put to the sword,
declares the Lord.’

32 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Behold, disaster is going forth
    from nation to nation,
(EY)and a great tempest is stirring
    (EZ)from the farthest parts of the earth!

33 (FA)“And those pierced by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. (FB)They shall not be lamented, (FC)or gathered, or buried; (FD)they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.

34 (FE)“Wail, (FF)you shepherds, and cry out,
    (FG)and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock,
for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come,
    and you shall fall like a choice vessel.
35 No refuge will remain (FH)for the shepherds,
    nor escape for the lords of the flock.
36 A voice—the cry (FI)of the shepherds,
    (FJ)and the wail of the lords of the flock!
For the Lord is laying waste their pasture,
37     (FK)and the peaceful folds are devastated
    (FL)because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 Like a lion (FM)he has left his lair,
    for their land has become a waste
because of (FN)the sword of the oppressor,
    (FO)and because of his fierce anger.”

Jeremiah Threatened with Death

26 (FP)In the beginning of the reign of (FQ)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: “Thus says the Lord: (FR)Stand in the court of the Lord's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord (FS)all the words that I command you to speak to them; (FT)do not hold back a word. (FU)It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, (FV)that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them (FW)because of their evil deeds. You shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: (FX)If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, (FY)and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you (FZ)urgently, (GA)though you have not listened, then I will make this house (GB)like Shiloh, and I will make this city (GC)a curse for all the nations of the earth.’”

(GD)The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then (GE)the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be (GF)like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, (GG)without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10 When (GH)the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the Lord and took their seat in the (GI)entry of the New Gate of the house of the Lord. 11 Then (GJ)the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, (GK)“This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13 Now therefore (GL)mend your ways and your deeds, (GM)and obey the voice of the Lord your God, (GN)and the Lord will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14 (GO)But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. 15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, (GP)you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Jeremiah Spared from Death

16 (GQ)Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, (GR)“This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.” 17 (GS)And certain of (GT)the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying, 18 “Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts,

(GU)“‘Zion shall be plowed as a field;
    Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
    and the mountain of the house a wooded height.’

19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? (GV)Did he not fear the Lord and entreat the favor of the Lord, (GW)and did not the Lord relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them? (GX)But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves.”

20 There was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from (GY)Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah. 21 And when (GZ)King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt. 22 Then (HA)King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, (HB)Elnathan the son of (HC)Achbor and others with him, 23 and they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, (HD)who struck him down with the sword and dumped his dead body into the burial place of the common people.

24 But the hand of (HE)Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to be put to death.

The Yoke of Nebuchadnezzar

27 In the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah[e] the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord. Thus the Lord said to me: (HF)“Make yourself straps and (HG)yoke-bars, and put them on your neck. Send word[f] to the king of (HH)Edom, the king of (HI)Moab, the king of the sons of (HJ)Ammon, the king of (HK)Tyre, and the king of Sidon by the hand of the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. Give them this charge for their masters: ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: This is what you shall say to your masters: “It is I who (HL)by my great power and my outstretched arm (HM)have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, (HN)and I give it to whomever it seems right to me. (HO)Now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, (HP)my servant, (HQ)and I have given him also the beasts of the field to serve him. (HR)All the nations shall serve him and (HS)his son and (HT)his grandson, (HU)until the time of his own land comes. (HV)Then many nations and great kings shall make him their slave.

“‘“But if any nation or kingdom will not serve this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (HW)and put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation (HX)with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, declares the Lord, until I have consumed it by his hand. So (HY)do not listen to your (HZ)prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your (IA)fortune-tellers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon.’ 10 (IB)For it is a lie that they are prophesying to you, with the result that you will be removed far from your land, and I will drive you out, and you will perish. 11 (IC)But any nation that will bring its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave on its own land, to work it and dwell there, declares the Lord.”’”

12 To (ID)Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke in like manner: (IE)“Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and (IF)serve him and his people and live. 13 (IG)Why will you and your people die (IH)by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, (II)as the Lord has spoken concerning any nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? 14 (IJ)Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ (IK)for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 15 I have not sent them, declares the Lord, but (IL)they are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.”

16 Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: (IM)Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, (IN)‘Behold, the vessels of the Lord's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,’ (IO)for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 17 (IP)Do not listen to them; (IQ)serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city (IR)become a desolation? 18 If they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, then (IS)let them intercede with the Lord of hosts, (IT)that the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon. 19 (IU)For thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the pillars, the sea, the stands, and the rest of the vessels that are left in this city, 20 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away, (IV)when he took into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem— 21 thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, (IW)concerning the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem: 22 (IX)They shall be carried to Babylon (IY)and remain there (IZ)until the day when I visit them, declares the Lord. (JA)Then I will bring them back (JB)and restore them to this place.”

Hananiah the False Prophet

28 In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of (JC)Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of (JD)Azzur, the prophet from (JE)Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (JF)I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. (JG)Within (JH)two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord's house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place (JI)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, (JJ)for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, and the prophet Jeremiah said, (JK)“Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. (JL)The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. (JM)As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the (JN)yoke-bars from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke them. 11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, (JO)“Thus says the Lord: (JP)Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of (JQ)all the nations within two years.” But Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

12 Sometime after the prophet (JR)Hananiah had broken the yoke-bars from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Go, tell Hananiah, ‘Thus says the Lord: You have broken wooden bars, but you have made in their place bars of iron. 14 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put upon the neck of all these nations (JS)an iron yoke to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (JT)and they shall serve him, (JU)for I have given to him even the beasts of the field.’” 15 And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah, (JV)the Lord has not sent you, (JW)and you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will remove you from the face of the earth. This year you shall die, (JX)because you have uttered rebellion against the Lord.’”

17 In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.

Jeremiah's Letter to the Exiles

29 These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to (JY)the surviving elders of the exiles, and to (JZ)the priests, (KA)the prophets, and (KB)all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was after (KC)King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem. The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of (KD)Shaphan and Gemariah the son of (KE)Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. It said: “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: (KF)Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and (KG)pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (KH)Do not let your prophets and (KI)your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,[g] for (KJ)it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; (KK)I did not send them, declares the Lord.

10 “For thus says the Lord: (KL)When seventy years are completed for Babylon, (KM)I will visit you, (KN)and I will fulfill to you my promise (KO)and bring you back to this place. 11 (KP)For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[h] and not for evil, (KQ)to give you a future and a hope. 12 (KR)Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, (KS)and I will hear you. 13 (KT)You will seek me and find me, when you seek me (KU)with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, (KV)and I will restore your fortunes and (KW)gather you from all the nations and all the places (KX)where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

15 “Because you have said, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,’ 16 thus says the Lord concerning (KY)the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your kinsmen who did not go out with you into exile: 17 ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, behold, I am sending on them (KZ)sword, famine, and pestilence, and I will make them like (LA)vile figs that are so rotten they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with (LB)sword, famine, and pestilence, (LC)and will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, (LD)to be a curse, a terror, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations (LE)where I have driven them, 19 because they did not pay attention to my words, declares the Lord, (LF)that I persistently sent to you by my servants the prophets, but you would not listen, declares the Lord.’ 20 Hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles (LG)whom I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon: 21 ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, (LH)who are prophesying a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall strike them down before your eyes. 22 (LI)Because of them (LJ)this curse shall be used by all the exiles from Judah in Babylon: “The Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, (LK)whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire,” 23 because they have done an outrageous thing in Israel, (LL)they have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and (LM)they have spoken in my name lying words that I did not command them. (LN)I am the one who knows, (LO)and I am witness, declares the Lord.’”

Shemaiah's False Prophecy

24 To (LP)Shemaiah of Nehelam you shall say: 25 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have sent letters in your name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and to (LQ)Zephaniah the son of (LR)Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26 ‘The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to have (LS)charge in the house of the Lord (LT)over every madman who prophesies, to put him in (LU)the stocks and neck irons. 27 Now why have you not rebuked Jeremiah (LV)of Anathoth who is prophesying to you? 28 For he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, “Your exile will be long; (LW)build houses and live in them, and plant gardens and eat their produce.”’”

29 (LX)Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet. 30 (LY)Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send to all the exiles, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord concerning (LZ)Shemaiah of Nehelam: Because (MA)Shemaiah had prophesied to you (MB)when I did not send him, and has made you trust in a lie, 32 therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish (MC)Shemaiah of Nehelam and his descendants. He shall not have anyone living among this people, (MD)and he shall not see the good that I will do to my people, declares the Lord, (ME)for he has spoken rebellion against the Lord.’”

Restoration for Israel and Judah

30 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: (MF)Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. (MG)For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, (MH)when I will restore (MI)the fortunes of my people, (MJ)Israel and Judah, says the Lord, (MK)and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”

These are the words that the Lord spoke concerning (ML)Israel and Judah:

“Thus says the Lord:
We have heard a cry of panic,
    of terror, and no peace.
Ask now, and see,
    can a man bear a child?
(MM)Why then do I see every man
    with his hands on his stomach (MN)like a woman in labor?
    (MO)Why has every face turned pale?
Alas! (MP)That day is so great
    (MQ)there is none like it;
it is a time of distress for Jacob;
    yet he shall be saved out of it.

“And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the Lord of hosts, that I will (MR)break his (MS)yoke from off your neck, and I will (MT)burst your bonds, (MU)and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him.[i] But they shall serve the Lord their God and (MV)David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 (MW)“Then fear not, (MX)O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord,
    nor be dismayed, O Israel;
for behold, (MY)I will save you from far away,
    (MZ)and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
(NA)Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
    and none shall make him afraid.
11 (NB)For I am with you to save you,
declares the Lord;
(NC)I will make a full end of all the nations
    among whom I scattered you,
    but of you I will not make a full end.
(ND)I will (NE)discipline you in just measure,
    and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

12 “For thus says the Lord:
(NF)Your hurt is incurable,
    (NG)and your wound is grievous.
13 There is none to uphold your cause,
    no medicine for your wound,
    (NH)no healing for you.
14 (NI)All your lovers have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you;
for I have dealt you the blow of (NJ)an enemy,
    the punishment (NK)of a merciless foe,
because your guilt is great,
    (NL)because your sins are flagrant.
15 (NM)Why do you cry out over your hurt?
    (NN)Your pain is incurable.
Because your guilt is great,
    (NO)because your sins are flagrant,
    I have done these things to you.
16 (NP)Therefore all who devour you shall be devoured,
    and (NQ)all your foes, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
(NR)those who plunder you shall be plundered,
    (NS)and all who prey on you I will make a prey.
17 (NT)For I will restore (NU)health to you,
    and (NV)your wounds I will heal,
declares the Lord,
because (NW)they have called you an outcast:
    (NX)‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’

18 “Thus says the Lord:
Behold, (NY)I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
    and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt on (NZ)its mound,
    and the palace shall stand where it used to be.
19 (OA)Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving,
    and the voices of those who celebrate.
(OB)I will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
    I will make them honored, and they shall not be small.
20 (OC)Their children shall be as they were of old,
    and their congregation shall be established before me,
    and I will punish all who oppress them.
21 (OD)Their prince shall be one of themselves;
    (OE)their ruler shall come out from their midst;
(OF)I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me,
    (OG)for who would dare of himself to approach me?
declares the Lord.
22 (OH)And you shall be my people,
    and I will be your God.”

23 (OI)Behold (OJ)the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
24 (OK)The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and accomplished
    the intentions of his mind.
(OL)In the latter days you will understand this.

The Lord Will Turn Mourning to Joy

31 (OM)“At that time, declares the Lord, (ON)I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”

Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
    found grace in the wilderness;
(OO)when Israel sought for rest,
    the Lord appeared to him[j] from far away.
(OP)I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore (OQ)I have continued (OR)my faithfulness to you.
(OS)Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
    O virgin Israel!
(OT)Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
    and shall go forth in (OU)the dance of the merrymakers.
(OV)Again you shall plant vineyards
    on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
    and shall enjoy the fruit.
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
    in (OW)the hill country of Ephraim:
(OX)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”

For thus says the Lord:
(OY)“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
    and raise shouts for (OZ)the chief of the nations;
proclaim, give praise, and say,
    (PA)‘O Lord, save your people,
    the remnant of Israel.’
Behold, I will bring them (PB)from the north country
    and (PC)gather them from (PD)the farthest parts of the earth,
among them (PE)the blind and the lame,
    the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
    a great company, they shall return here.
(PF)With weeping they shall come,
    (PG)and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back,
I will make them (PH)walk by brooks of water,
    (PI)in a straight path in which they shall not stumble,
for (PJ)I am a father to Israel,
    and Ephraim is (PK)my firstborn.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will (PL)gather him,
    and will keep him (PM)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 (PN)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
    and has redeemed him from (PO)hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
    (PP)and they shall be radiant (PQ)over the goodness of the Lord,
(PR)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and over the young of the flock and the herd;
(PS)their life shall be like a watered garden,
    (PT)and they shall languish no more.
13 (PU)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
    and the young men and the old shall be merry.
(PV)I will turn their mourning into joy;
    I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 (PW)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
    and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”

15 Thus says the Lord:
(PX)“A voice is heard in (PY)Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
(PZ)Rachel is weeping for her children;
    she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    (QA)because they are no more.”

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
    and (QB)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (QC)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
    and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (QD)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
    like an untrained calf;
(QE)bring me back that I may be restored,
    for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (QF)I had turned away, I relented,
    and after I was instructed, (QG)I struck my thigh;
(QH)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (QI)Is Ephraim my dear son?
    (QJ)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
    I do remember him still.
(QK)Therefore my heart[k] yearns for him;
    I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.

21 (QL)“Set up road markers for yourself;
    make yourself guideposts;
(QM)consider well the highway,
    (QN)the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin Israel,
    return to these your cities.
22 (QO)How long will you waver,
    (QP)O faithless daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
    a woman encircles a man.”

23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, (QQ)when I restore their fortunes:

(QR)“‘The Lord bless you, (QS)O habitation of righteousness,
    (QT)O holy hill!’

24 (QU)And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and (QV)the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25 For I will (QW)satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”

26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.

27 (QX)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (QY)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with (QZ)the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass that (RA)as I have watched over them (RB)to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, (RC)so I will watch over them (RD)to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29 In those days they shall no longer say:

(RE)“‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children's teeth are set on edge.’

30 (RF)But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

The New Covenant

31 (RG)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (RH)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (RI)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (RJ)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (RK)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (RL)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (RM)on their hearts. (RN)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (RO)for they shall all know me, (RP)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (RQ)I will forgive their iniquity, and (RR)I will remember their sin no more.”

35 Thus says the Lord,
who (RS)gives the sun for light by day
    and (RT)the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    (RU)the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 (RV)“If this fixed order departs
    from before me, declares the Lord,
then shall the offspring of Israel cease
    from being a nation before me forever.”

37 Thus says the Lord:
“If the heavens above can be measured,
    and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
(RW)then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel
    for all that they have done,
declares the Lord.”

38 (RX)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord (RY)from the Tower of Hananel to (RZ)the Corner Gate. 39 (SA)And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40 (SB)The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the (SC)brook Kidron, to the corner of (SD)the Horse Gate toward the east, (SE)shall be sacred to the Lord. (SF)It shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”

Jeremiah Buys a Field During the Siege

32 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord (SG)in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, (SH)which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet (SI)was shut up in (SJ)the court of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah. For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, “Why do you prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: (SK)Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall capture it; (SL)Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, (SM)but shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face and see him eye to eye. And (SN)he shall take Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall remain until I visit him, declares the Lord. (SO)Though you fight against the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed’?”

Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, (SP)‘Buy my field that is at (SQ)Anathoth, (SR)for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.’ Then Hanamel my cousin came to me in (SS)the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Buy my field that is at (ST)Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

“And I bought the field at (SU)Anathoth from Hanamel my cousin, and (SV)weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. 10 (SW)I signed the deed, (SX)sealed it, (SY)got witnesses, and (SZ)weighed the money on scales. 11 Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions and the open copy.

Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

My heart(A) is broken within me;
    all my bones tremble.(B)
I am like a drunken man,
    like a strong man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and his holy words.(C)
10 The land is full of adulterers;(D)
    because of the curse[a](E) the land lies parched
    and the pastures(F) in the wilderness are withered.(G)
The prophets follow an evil course
    and use their power unjustly.

11 “Both prophet and priest are godless;(H)
    even in my temple(I) I find their wickedness,”
declares the Lord.
12 “Therefore their path will become slippery;(J)
    they will be banished to darkness
    and there they will fall.
I will bring disaster on them
    in the year they are punished,(K)
declares the Lord.

13 “Among the prophets of Samaria
    I saw this repulsive thing:
They prophesied by Baal(L)
    and led my people Israel astray.(M)
14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen something horrible:(N)
    They commit adultery and live a lie.(O)
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,(P)
    so that not one of them turns from their wickedness.(Q)
They are all like Sodom(R) to me;
    the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”(S)

15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets:

“I will make them eat bitter food
    and drink poisoned water,(T)
because from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness(U) has spread throughout the land.”

16 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Do not listen(V) to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
    they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions(W) from their own minds,
    not from the mouth(X) of the Lord.
17 They keep saying(Y) to those who despise me,
    ‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’(Z)
And to all who follow the stubbornness(AA) of their hearts
    they say, ‘No harm(AB) will come to you.’
18 But which of them has stood in the council(AC) of the Lord
    to see or to hear his word?
    Who has listened and heard his word?
19 See, the storm(AD) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a whirlwind(AE) swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
20 The anger(AF) of the Lord will not turn back(AG)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand it clearly.
21 I did not send(AH) these prophets,
    yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they have prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council,(AI)
    they would have proclaimed(AJ) my words to my people
and would have turned(AK) them from their evil ways
    and from their evil deeds.(AL)

23 “Am I only a God nearby,(AM)
declares the Lord,
    “and not a God far away?
24 Who can hide(AN) in secret places
    so that I cannot see them?”
declares the Lord.
    “Do not I fill heaven and earth?”(AO)
declares the Lord.

25 “I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies(AP) in my name. They say, ‘I had a dream!(AQ) I had a dream!’ 26 How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions(AR) of their own minds?(AS) 27 They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget(AT) my name, just as their ancestors forgot(AU) my name through Baal worship.(AV) 28 Let the prophet who has a dream(AW) recount the dream, but let the one who has my word(AX) speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?” declares the Lord. 29 “Is not my word like fire,”(AY) declares the Lord, “and like a hammer(AZ) that breaks a rock in pieces?

30 “Therefore,” declares the Lord, “I am against(BA) the prophets(BB) who steal from one another words supposedly from me. 31 Yes,” declares the Lord, “I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The Lord declares.’(BC) 32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,(BD)” declares the Lord. “They tell them and lead my people astray(BE) with their reckless lies,(BF) yet I did not send(BG) or appoint them. They do not benefit(BH) these people in the least,” declares the Lord.

False Prophecy

33 “When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, ‘What is the message(BI) from the Lord?’ say to them, ‘What message? I will forsake(BJ) you, declares the Lord.’ 34 If a prophet or a priest or anyone else claims, ‘This is a message(BK) from the Lord,’ I will punish(BL) them and their household. 35 This is what each of you keeps saying to your friends and other Israelites: ‘What is the Lord’s answer?’(BM) or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 36 But you must not mention ‘a message from the Lord’ again, because each one’s word becomes their own message. So you distort(BN) the words of the living God,(BO) the Lord Almighty, our God. 37 This is what you keep saying to a prophet: ‘What is the Lord’s answer to you?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 38 Although you claim, ‘This is a message from the Lord,’ this is what the Lord says: You used the words, ‘This is a message from the Lord,’ even though I told you that you must not claim, ‘This is a message from the Lord.’ 39 Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast(BP) you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your ancestors. 40 I will bring on you everlasting disgrace(BQ)—everlasting shame that will not be forgotten.”

Two Baskets of Figs

24 After Jehoiachin[b](BR) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs(BS) placed in front of the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early;(BT) the other basket had very bad(BU) figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

Then the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(BV) Jeremiah?”

“Figs,” I answered. “The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent(BW) away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.[c] My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back(BX) to this land. I will build(BY) them up and not tear them down; I will plant(BZ) them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know(CA) me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people,(CB) and I will be their God, for they will return(CC) to me with all their heart.(CD)

“‘But like the bad(CE) figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the Lord, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah(CF) king of Judah, his officials(CG) and the survivors(CH) from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt.(CI) I will make them abhorrent(CJ) and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword,(CK) a curse[d](CL) and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish(CM) them. 10 I will send the sword,(CN) famine(CO) and plague(CP) against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.(CQ)’”

Seventy Years of Captivity

25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(CR) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar(CS) king of Babylon. So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah(CT) and to all those living in Jerusalem: For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah(CU) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,(CV) but you have not listened.(CW)

And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets(CX) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.(CY) They said, “Turn(CZ) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land(DA) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. Do not follow other gods(DB) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”

“But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have aroused(DC) my anger with what your hands have made,(DD) and you have brought harm(DE) to yourselves.”

Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words, I will summon(DF) all the peoples of the north(DG) and my servant(DH) Nebuchadnezzar(DI) king of Babylon,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy[e](DJ) them and make them an object of horror and scorn,(DK) and an everlasting ruin.(DL) 10 I will banish from them the sounds(DM) of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,(DN) the sound of millstones(DO) and the light of the lamp.(DP) 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,(DQ) and these nations will serve(DR) the king of Babylon seventy years.(DS)

12 “But when the seventy years(DT) are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon(DU) and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,[f] for their guilt,” declares the Lord, “and will make it desolate(DV) forever. 13 I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written(DW) in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 They themselves will be enslaved(DX) by many nations(DY) and great kings; I will repay(DZ) them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of God’s Wrath

15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup(EA) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send(EB) you drink it. 16 When they drink(EC) it, they will stagger(ED) and go mad(EE) because of the sword(EF) I will send among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent(EG) me drink it: 18 Jerusalem(EH) and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin(EI) and an object of horror and scorn,(EJ) a curse[g](EK)—as they are today;(EL) 19 Pharaoh king(EM) of Egypt,(EN) his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz;(EO) all the kings of the Philistines(EP) (those of Ashkelon,(EQ) Gaza,(ER) Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); 21 Edom,(ES) Moab(ET) and Ammon;(EU) 22 all the kings of Tyre(EV) and Sidon;(EW) the kings of the coastlands(EX) across the sea; 23 Dedan,(EY) Tema,(EZ) Buz(FA) and all who are in distant places[h];(FB) 24 all the kings of Arabia(FC) and all the kings of the foreign people(FD) who live in the wilderness; 25 all the kings of Zimri,(FE) Elam(FF) and Media;(FG) 26 and all the kings of the north,(FH) near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms(FI) on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak[i](FJ) will drink it too.

27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk(FK) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword(FL) I will send among you.’ 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink(FM), tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster(FN) on the city that bears my Name,(FO) and will you indeed go unpunished?(FP) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword(FQ) on all(FR) who live on the earth,(FS) declares the Lord Almighty.’

30 “Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:

“‘The Lord will roar(FT) from on high;
    he will thunder(FU) from his holy dwelling(FV)
    and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread(FW) the grapes,
    shout against all who live on the earth.
31 The tumult(FX) will resound to the ends of the earth,
    for the Lord will bring charges(FY) against the nations;
he will bring judgment(FZ) on all(GA) mankind
    and put the wicked to the sword,(GB)’”
declares the Lord.

32 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Look! Disaster(GC) is spreading
    from nation to nation;(GD)
a mighty storm(GE) is rising
    from the ends of the earth.”(GF)

33 At that time those slain(GG) by the Lord will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered(GH) up or buried,(GI) but will be like dung lying on the ground.

34 Weep and wail, you shepherds;(GJ)
    roll(GK) in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered(GL) has come;
    you will fall like the best of the rams.[j](GM)
35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
    the leaders of the flock no place to escape.(GN)
36 Hear the cry(GO) of the shepherds,(GP)
    the wailing of the leaders of the flock,
    for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37 The peaceful meadows will be laid waste
    because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 Like a lion(GQ) he will leave his lair,
    and their land will become desolate(GR)
because of the sword[k] of the oppressor(GS)
    and because of the Lord’s fierce anger.(GT)

Jeremiah Threatened With Death

26 Early in the reign of Jehoiakim(GU) son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: “This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard(GV) of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord.(GW) Tell(GX) them everything I command you; do not omit(GY) a word. Perhaps they will listen and each will turn(GZ) from their evil ways. Then I will relent(HA) and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen(HB) to me and follow my law,(HC) which I have set before you, and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened(HD)), then I will make this house like Shiloh(HE) and this city a curse[l](HF) among all the nations of the earth.’”

The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded(HG) him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized(HH) him and said, “You must die!(HI) Why do you prophesy in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?”(HJ) And all the people crowded(HK) around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10 When the officials(HL) of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate(HM) of the Lord’s house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man should be sentenced to death(HN) because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!”(HO)

12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials(HP) and all the people: “The Lord sent me to prophesy(HQ) against this house and this city all the things you have heard.(HR) 13 Now reform(HS) your ways and your actions and obey(HT) the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent(HU) and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands;(HV) do with me whatever you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood(HW) on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words(HX) in your hearing.”

16 Then the officials(HY) and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man should not be sentenced to death!(HZ) He has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

17 Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and said to the entire assembly of people, 18 “Micah(IA) of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. He told all the people of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“‘Zion(IB) will be plowed like a field,
    Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,(IC)
    the temple hill(ID) a mound overgrown with thickets.’[m](IE)

19 “Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah(IF) fear the Lord and seek(IG) his favor? And did not the Lord relent,(IH) so that he did not bring the disaster(II) he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster(IJ) on ourselves!”

20 (Now Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim(IK) was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord; he prophesied the same things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did. 21 When King Jehoiakim(IL) and all his officers and officials(IM) heard his words, the king was determined to put him to death.(IN) But Uriah heard of it and fled(IO) in fear to Egypt. 22 King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan(IP) son of Akbor to Egypt, along with some other men. 23 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword(IQ) and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.)(IR)

24 Furthermore, Ahikam(IS) son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, and so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

Judah to Serve Nebuchadnezzar

27 Early in the reign of Zedekiah[n](IT) son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: This is what the Lord said to me: “Make a yoke(IU) out of straps and crossbars and put it on your neck. Then send(IV) word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon,(IW) Tyre and Sidon(IX) through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. Give them a message for their masters and say, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Tell this to your masters: With my great power and outstretched arm(IY) I made(IZ) the earth and its people and the animals(JA) that are on it, and I give(JB) it to anyone I please. Now I will give all your countries into the hands of my servant(JC) Nebuchadnezzar(JD) king of Babylon; I will make even the wild animals subject to him.(JE) All nations will serve(JF) him and his son and his grandson until the time(JG) for his land comes; then many nations and great kings will subjugate(JH) him.

“‘“If, however, any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish(JI) that nation with the sword,(JJ) famine(JK) and plague,(JL) declares the Lord, until I destroy it by his hand. So do not listen to your prophets,(JM) your diviners,(JN) your interpreters of dreams,(JO) your mediums(JP) or your sorcerers(JQ) who tell you, ‘You will not serve(JR) the king of Babylon.’ 10 They prophesy lies(JS) to you that will only serve to remove(JT) you far from your lands; I will banish you and you will perish. 11 But if any nation will bow its neck under the yoke(JU) of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will let that nation remain in its own land to till it and to live(JV) there, declares the Lord.”’”

12 I gave the same message to Zedekiah king of Judah. I said, “Bow your neck under the yoke(JW) of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and you will live.(JX) 13 Why will you and your people die(JY) by the sword, famine and plague(JZ) with which the Lord has threatened any nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? 14 Do not listen(KA) to the words of the prophets(KB) who say to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying lies(KC) to you. 15 ‘I have not sent(KD) them,’ declares the Lord. ‘They are prophesying lies in my name.(KE) Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish,(KF) both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.’”

16 Then I said to the priests and all these people, “This is what the Lord says: Do not listen to the prophets who say, ‘Very soon now the articles(KG) from the Lord’s house will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying lies to you. 17 Do not listen(KH) to them. Serve the king of Babylon, and you will live.(KI) Why should this city become a ruin? 18 If they are prophets and have the word of the Lord, let them plead(KJ) with the Lord Almighty that the articles remaining in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem not be taken to Babylon. 19 For this is what the Lord Almighty says about the pillars, the bronze Sea,(KK) the movable stands and the other articles(KL) that are left in this city, 20 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away when he carried(KM) Jehoiachin[o](KN) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem— 21 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about the things that are left in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem: 22 ‘They will be taken(KO) to Babylon and there they will remain until the day(KP) I come for them,’ declares the Lord. ‘Then I will bring(KQ) them back and restore them to this place.’”

The False Prophet Hananiah

28 In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah(KR) king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon,(KS) said to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke(KT) of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles(KU) of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place Jehoiachin[p](KV) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the other exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”(KW)

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, “Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.(KX) Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague(KY) against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.(KZ)

10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke(LA) off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it, 11 and he said(LB) before all the people, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations within two years.’” At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.

12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Go and tell Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron. 14 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will put an iron yoke(LC) on the necks of all these nations to make them serve(LD) Nebuchadnezzar(LE) king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I will even give him control over the wild animals.(LF)’”

15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent(LG) you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies.(LH) 16 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.(LI) This very year you are going to die,(LJ) because you have preached rebellion(LK) against the Lord.’”

17 In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.(LL)

A Letter to the Exiles

29 This is the text of the letter(LM) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.(LN) (This was after King Jehoiachin[q](LO) and the queen mother,(LP) the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried(LQ) into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build(LR) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.(LS) Also, seek(LT) the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray(LU) to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets(LV) and diviners among you deceive(LW) you. Do not listen to the dreams(LX) you encourage them to have.(LY) They are prophesying lies(LZ) to you in my name. I have not sent(MA) them,” declares the Lord.

10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years(MB) are completed for Babylon, I will come to you(MC) and fulfill my good promise(MD) to bring you back(ME) to this place. 11 For I know the plans(MF) I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper(MG) you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(MH) 12 Then you will call(MI) on me and come and pray(MJ) to me, and I will listen(MK) to you. 13 You will seek(ML) me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.(MM) 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back(MN) from captivity.[r] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”(MO)

15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(MP) against them and I will make them like figs(MQ) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(MR) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[s](MS) and an object of horror,(MT) of scorn(MU) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(MV) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(MW) by my servants the prophets.(MX) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.

20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(MY) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(MZ) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(NA) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(NB) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(NC) it and am a witness(ND) to it,” declares the Lord.

Message to Shemaiah

24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(NE) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(NF) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(NG) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(NH) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(NI) Therefore build(NJ) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”

29 Zephaniah(NK) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(NL) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(NM) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(NN) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(NO) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(NP) against me.’”

Restoration of Israel

30 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write(NQ) in a book all the words I have spoken to you. The days(NR) are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will bring(NS) my people Israel and Judah back from captivity[t] and restore(NT) them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess,’ says the Lord.”

These are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Cries of fear(NU) are heard—
    terror, not peace.
Ask and see:
    Can a man bear children?
Then why do I see every strong man
    with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,(NV)
    every face turned deathly pale?(NW)
How awful that day(NX) will be!
    No other will be like it.
It will be a time of trouble(NY) for Jacob,
    but he will be saved(NZ) out of it.

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty,
    ‘I will break the yoke(OA) off their necks
and will tear off their bonds;(OB)
    no longer will foreigners enslave them.(OC)
Instead, they will serve the Lord their God
    and David(OD) their king,(OE)
    whom I will raise up for them.

10 “‘So do not be afraid,(OF) Jacob my servant;(OG)
    do not be dismayed, Israel,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will surely save(OH) you out of a distant place,
    your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,(OI)
    and no one will make him afraid.(OJ)
11 I am with you(OK) and will save you,’
    declares the Lord.
‘Though I completely destroy all the nations
    among which I scatter you,
    I will not completely destroy(OL) you.
I will discipline(OM) you but only in due measure;
    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.’(ON)

12 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wound(OO) is incurable,
    your injury beyond healing.(OP)
13 There is no one to plead your cause,(OQ)
    no remedy for your sore,
    no healing(OR) for you.
14 All your allies(OS) have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you.
I have struck you as an enemy(OT) would
    and punished you as would the cruel,(OU)
because your guilt is so great
    and your sins(OV) so many.
15 Why do you cry out over your wound,
    your pain that has no cure?(OW)
Because of your great guilt and many sins
    I have done these things to you.(OX)

16 “‘But all who devour(OY) you will be devoured;
    all your enemies will go into exile.(OZ)
Those who plunder(PA) you will be plundered;
    all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
17 But I will restore you to health
    and heal(PB) your wounds,’
declares the Lord,
‘because you are called an outcast,(PC)
    Zion for whom no one cares.’(PD)

18 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘I will restore the fortunes(PE) of Jacob’s tents(PF)
    and have compassion(PG) on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt(PH) on her ruins,
    and the palace will stand in its proper place.
19 From them will come songs(PI) of thanksgiving(PJ)
    and the sound of rejoicing.(PK)
I will add to their numbers,(PL)
    and they will not be decreased;
I will bring them honor,(PM)
    and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children(PN) will be as in days of old,
    and their community will be established(PO) before me;
    I will punish(PP) all who oppress them.
21 Their leader(PQ) will be one of their own;
    their ruler will arise from among them.(PR)
I will bring him near(PS) and he will come close to me—
    for who is he who will devote himself
    to be close to me?’
declares the Lord.
22 “‘So you will be my people,(PT)
    and I will be your God.(PU)’”

23 See, the storm(PV) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a driving wind swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger(PW) of the Lord will not turn back(PX)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand(PY) this.

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God(PZ) of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”

This is what the Lord says:

“The people who survive the sword
    will find favor(QA) in the wilderness;
    I will come to give rest(QB) to Israel.”

The Lord appeared to us in the past,[u] saying:

“I have loved(QC) you with an everlasting love;
    I have drawn(QD) you with unfailing kindness.
I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin(QE) Israel, will be rebuilt.(QF)
Again you will take up your timbrels(QG)
    and go out to dance(QH) with the joyful.(QI)
Again you will plant(QJ) vineyards
    on the hills of Samaria;(QK)
the farmers will plant them
    and enjoy their fruit.(QL)
There will be a day when watchmen(QM) cry out
    on the hills of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”(QN)

This is what the Lord says:

“Sing(QO) with joy for Jacob;
    shout for the foremost(QP) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
    Lord, save(QQ) your people,
    the remnant(QR) of Israel.’
See, I will bring them from the land of the north(QS)
    and gather(QT) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(QU) and the lame,(QV)
    expectant mothers and women in labor;
    a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;(QW)
    they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(QX) them beside streams of water(QY)
    on a level(QZ) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(RA)
    and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
    proclaim it in distant coastlands:(RB)
‘He who scattered(RC) Israel will gather(RD) them
    and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(RE)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
    and redeem(RF) them from the hand of those stronger(RG) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(RH) on the heights(RI) of Zion;
    they will rejoice in the bounty(RJ) of the Lord
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(RK)
    the young of the flocks(RL) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(RM)
    and they will sorrow(RN) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
    young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(RO) into gladness;
    I will give them comfort(RP) and joy(RQ) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(RR) the priests(RS) with abundance,
    and my people will be filled with my bounty,(RT)
declares the Lord.

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,(RU)
    mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,(RV)
    because they are no more.”(RW)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping
    and your eyes from tears,(RX)
for your work will be rewarded,(RY)
declares the Lord.
    “They will return(RZ) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(SA) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
    “Your children(SB) will return to their own land.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
    ‘You disciplined(SC) me like an unruly calf,(SD)
    and I have been disciplined.
Restore(SE) me, and I will return,
    because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(SF)
    I repented;
after I came to understand,
    I beat(SG) my breast.
I was ashamed(SH) and humiliated
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(SI)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
    the child(SJ) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
    I still remember(SK) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
    I have great compassion(SL) for him,”
declares the Lord.

21 “Set up road signs;
    put up guideposts.(SM)
Take note of the highway,(SN)
    the road that you take.
Return,(SO) Virgin(SP) Israel,
    return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(SQ)
    unfaithful(SR) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(SS) on earth—
    the woman will return to[v](ST) the man.”

23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[w](SU) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(SV) you, you prosperous city,(SW) you sacred mountain.’(SX) 24 People will live(SY) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(SZ) 25 I will refresh the weary(TA) and satisfy the faint.”(TB)

26 At this I awoke(TC) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.

27 “The days are coming,”(TD) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(TE) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(TF) over them to uproot(TG) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(TH) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(TI) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents(TJ) have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’(TK)

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(TL) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    “when I will make a new covenant(TM)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(TN)
    I made with their ancestors(TO)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,(TP)
because they broke my covenant,
    though I was a husband(TQ) to[x] them,[y]
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
    after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(TR)
    and write it on their hearts.(TS)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(TT)
34 No longer will they teach(TU) their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(TV) me,
    from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(TW) their wickedness
    and will remember their sins(TX) no more.”

35 This is what the Lord says,

he who appoints(TY) the sun
    to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
    to shine by night,(TZ)
who stirs up the sea(UA)
    so that its waves roar(UB)
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(UC)
36 “Only if these decrees(UD) vanish from my sight,”
    declares the Lord,
“will Israel(UE) ever cease
    being a nation before me.”

37 This is what the Lord says:

“Only if the heavens above can be measured(UF)
    and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(UG) all the descendants of Israel
    because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.

38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(UH) for me from the Tower of Hananel(UI) to the Corner Gate.(UJ) 39 The measuring line(UK) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(UL) where dead bodies(UM) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(UN) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(UO) will be holy(UP) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(UQ) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(UR) year of Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(US) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(UT) in the courtyard of the guard(UU) in the royal palace of Judah.

Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(UV) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(UW) it. Zedekiah(UX) king of Judah will not escape(UY) the Babylonians[z](UZ) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. He will take(VA) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(VB) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(VC)

Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(VD) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(VE) to buy it.’

“Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(VF) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’

“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; so I bought the field(VG) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[aa] of silver.(VH) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(VI) had it witnessed,(VJ) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy—
