Klagan över folkets ogudaktighet
9 (A) O, att mitt huvud
vore en vattenbrunn
och mina ögon en källa av tårar!
Då skulle jag gråta dag och natt
över de slagna
hos dottern mitt folk.
2 (B) O, att jag hade en viloplats i öknen,
så att jag kunde lämna mitt folk
och gå bort från dem,
för de är alla äktenskapsbrytare,
en samling trolösa.
3 (C) De spänner sin tunga som en pilbåge,
lögn och inte sanning
härskar i landet.
De går från illdåd till illdåd,
mig vill de inte veta av,
säger Herren.
4 (D) Var och en ska vara på sin vakt
för sin vän,
ingen kan lita
ens på sin bror,
för varje bror är en listig bedragare[a]
och varje vän går med förtal.
5 (E) Var och en sviker sin vän,
ingen talar sanning.
De lär sina tungor att tala lögn,
de tröttar ut sig med att göra illa.
6 Du bor mitt ibland svek,
i sin svekfullhet vill de inte
veta av mig, säger Herren.
7 (F) Därför säger Herren Sebaot så:
Se, jag smälter dem
och prövar dem,
för vad annat kan jag göra
med dottern mitt folk?
8 (G) Deras tunga är en mördande pil,
deras mun talar svek.
De talar vänligt till sin nästa,
men i hjärtat lägger de fällor
för honom.
9 (H) Skulle jag inte straffa dem för sådant?
säger Herren.
Skulle jag inte hämnas
på ett sådant folk som detta?
10 (I) Jag vill gråta och sjunga sorgesång
över bergen,
jag vill höja sorgesång
över betesmarkerna i öknen,
för de är förbrända,
ingen går fram där mer,
och inga läten av boskap
hörs längre.
Både himlens fåglar
och de vilda djuren har flytt,
de är alla borta.
11 (J) Jag ska göra Jerusalem
till ett stenröse,
till en boning för schakaler,
och Juda städer till en ödemark
där ingen bor.
12 (K) Vem är så vis att han förstår detta? Och till vem har Herrens mun talat, så att han kan förklara varför landet har blivit så fördärvat, förbränt som en öken där ingen färdas?
13 Herren svarade: Det är för att de har övergett min undervisning som jag gav dem. De har inte lyssnat till min röst och inte följt den, 14 (L) utan vandrat efter sina hårda hjärtan och följt baalerna, så som deras fäder lärde dem.
15 (M) Därför säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud, så: Se, jag ska ge detta folk malört att äta och förgiftat vatten att dricka. 16 (N) Och jag ska sprida ut dem bland folk som varken de eller deras fäder har känt, och jag ska sända svärdet efter dem tills jag gjort slut på dem.
Nöden vid Jerusalems undergång
17 (O) Så säger Herren Sebaot:
Se er om och kalla på gråterskor[b]
så att de kommer,
sänd efter kunniga kvinnor,
låt dem komma.
18 Låt dem snabbt stämma upp
en sorgesång över oss,
så att våra ögon rinner av tårar
och vattnet strömmar
från våra ögonlock,
19 för sorgesång hörs från Sion:
”Vilken förödelse
som har drabbat oss!
Vi skäms djupt,
vi måste lämna landet,
för de har rivit våra hem.”
20 Ni kvinnor, hör Herrens ord,
öppna era öron
för ordet från hans mun.
Lär era döttrar sorgesång,
lär varandra klagosång,
21 för döden stiger in
genom våra fönster
och kommer in i våra palats.
Den rycker bort barnen från gatan
och de unga männen från torgen.
22 (P) Säg: Så säger Herren:
Människornas döda kroppar
ligger som gödsel på marken,
som kärvar efter skördemannen,
och ingen samlar upp dem.
23 Så säger Herren:
Den vise ska inte berömma sig
av sin vishet,
den starke inte av sin styrka
och den rike inte av sin rikedom.
24 (Q) Den som vill berömma sig,
han ska berömma sig av
att han har insikt och känner mig:
Att jag är Herren,
som verkar med nåd,
rätt och rättfärdighet på jorden,
för i det har jag min glädje,
säger Herren.[c]
25 (R) Se, dagar ska komma, säger Herren, då jag ska straffa alla omskurna[d] som ändå är oomskurna: 26 (S) Egypten, Juda, Edom, ammoniterna, Moab och alla ökenbor med kantklippt hår. För hednafolken är alla oomskurna, och hela Israels hus har ett oomskuret hjärta.

Jeremia gråter över folket
9 Om jag hade tårar och kunde gråta, då skulle jag gråta dag och natt över de slagna bland mitt folk.
2 Om jag ändå kunde gå bort och glömma dem och bo undangömd i öknen, för de är allesammans otrogna och falska.
3 De spänner sina tungor som bågar och skjuter iväg sina lögnpilar. De bryr sig inte alls om vad som är rätt. Det blir bara värre och värre, och mig vill de inte veta av, säger Herren.
4 Akta dig för din granne och för din bror! Alla utnyttjar varandra och sprider fruktansvärda lögner.
5 Med slipade tungor lurar och bedrar de varandra. De tröttar ut sig med alla sina synder.
6 De lägger missgärning till missgärning och lögn till lögn och vägrar envist att komma till mig, säger Herren.
7 Därför säger Herren, härskarornas Gud: Jag ska rena dem och pröva dem. Vad skulle jag annars kunna göra med dem?
8 Deras lögnaktiga tungor är ju som giftpilar. De talar så vänligt till sin medmänniska, medan de planerar ont mot henne.
9 Skulle jag inte straffa dem för sådana gärningar? frågar Herren. Skulle jag inte få hämnas på ett sådant folk?
10 Snyftande och gråtande pekar jag mot deras berg och betesmarker, som nu ligger öde utan en enda levande varelse. Borta är boskapens råmande. Fåglar och vilda djur finns inte så långt man kan se. Alla har flytt.
11 Jag ska förvandla Jerusalem till en ruinhög och ett tillhåll för ökenrävar. Juda städer kommer att bli tomma och helt övergivna.
12 Vem är så vis att han kan förstå det här? Var finns Herrens sändebud som kan förklara det? Varför har landet blivit en sådan ödemark, att ingen längre vågar resa igenom det?
13 Därför att mitt folk har övergett min lag och inte hört på mig, säger Herren.
14 I stället har de gjort vad som fallit dem in och tillbett Baalerna, precis som deras förfäder lärde dem.
15 Därför säger Herren, Israels Gud: Se, jag ska fylla dem med bitterhet och låta dem dricka gift.
16 Jag ska förskingra dem över hela världen, så att de får bo som främlingar i avlägsna länder. Och till och med där ska de bli förföljda med svärd ända tills jag har utplånat dem.
17-18 Härskarornas Gud säger: Skicka efter gråterskor! Gör det nu! Gråt och sörj med många tårar!
19 Hör, Jerusalem gråter i förtvivlan: Vi är ruinerade! Olycka har kommit över oss! Vi måste lämna vårt land och våra hem!
20 Hör Herrens ord, ni kvinnor som klagar! Lär era döttrar och era grannar att gråta.
21 Döden har smugit sig in och överraskat er. Barnen leker inte längre på gatorna, och de unga träffas inte längre på torgen.
22 Tala om för dem, säger Herren, att döda kroppar ska spridas ut som gödsel på fälten, som kärvar efter en som skördar, och att ingen vill begrava dem.
23 Herren säger: Låt inte den vise mannen sola sig i sin vishet och inte heller den mäktige mannen i sin makt eller den rike i sin rikedom.
24 Nej, den som vill berömma sig ska berömma sig av att han känner mig och förstår att jag är Herren, som är nådig, rättvis och rättfärdig. En sådan människa gläder jag mig åt.
25-26 En tid kommer när jag ska straffa alla dem som är omskurna till kroppen men inte i anden, säger Herren. Egyptier, edomiter, ammoniter, moabiter och araber omskär sig, och till och med ni, Juda folk, gör det. Men om ni inte låter omskära era hjärtan och älskar mig, är er omskärelse inte mer värd än en hednisk sedvänja.

And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the (B)daughter of my people!
2 [b](C)Oh that I had in the desert
A travelers’ lodging place,
That I might leave my people
And go from them!
For all of them are (D)adulterers,
A solemn assembly of (E)treacherous men.
3 “They (F)bend their tongue like their bow;
Lies and unfaithfulness prevail in the land,
For they (G)go onward from evil to evil,
And they (H)do not know Me,” declares Yahweh.
4 “Let everyone (I)beware of his neighbor,
And (J)do not trust any brother,
Because every (K)brother [c]surely supplants,
And every neighbor (L)goes about as a slanderer.
5 Everyone (M)deceives his neighbor
And does not speak the truth;
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They (N)weary themselves committing iniquity.
6 Your (O)habitation is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they (P)refuse to know Me,” declares Yahweh.
7 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Behold, I will refine them and (Q)test them;
For (R)what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people?
8 Their (S)tongue is a slaughtering arrow;
It speaks deceit;
With his mouth one (T)speaks peace to his neighbor,
But inwardly he (U)sets an ambush for him.
9 (V)Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares Yahweh.
“On a nation such as this
Shall I not avenge Myself?
10 “For the (W)mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing,
And for the pastures of the (X)wilderness a funeral lamentation,
Because they are (Y)turned into ruin so that no one passes through,
And the lowing of the cattle is not heard;
Both the (Z)birds of the sky and the beasts have fled; they are gone.
11 I will make Jerusalem a (AA)heap of ruins,
A haunt of (AB)jackals;
And I will make the cities of Judah a (AC)desolation, without inhabitant.”
12 Who is the (AD)wise man that may understand this? And who is he to whom (AE)the mouth of Yahweh has spoken, that he may declare it? (AF)Why has the land perished, turned into ruin like a desert, so that no one passes through? 13 Yahweh said, “Because they have (AG)forsaken My law, which I set before them, and have not listened to My voice nor walked according to it, 14 but have (AH)walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the (AI)Baals, as their (AJ)fathers taught them,” 15 therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “behold, (AK)I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them [d](AL)poisoned water to drink. 16 I will (AM)scatter them among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the (AN)sword after them until I have consumed them.”
17 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Carefully consider and call for the (AO)mourning women, that they may come;
And send for the [e](AP)skillful women, that they may come!
18 Let them make haste and take up a wailing for us,
That our (AQ)eyes may shed tears
And our eyelids flow with water.
19 For a voice of (AR)wailing is heard from Zion,
‘(AS)How we are destroyed!
We are put to great shame,
For we have (AT)left the land
Because they have cast down our dwellings.’”
20 Indeed, hear the word of Yahweh, O you (AU)women,
And let your ear receive the word of His mouth;
Teach your daughters wailing,
And everyone her neighbor a funeral lamentation.
21 For (AV)death has come up through our windows;
It has entered our palaces
To cut off the (AW)infants from the streets,
The choice men from the open squares.
22 Speak, “Thus declares Yahweh,
‘The corpses of men will fall (AX)like dung on the open field
And like the sheaf after the reaper,
But no one will gather them.’”
23 Thus says Yahweh, “(AY)Let not a wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the (AZ)mighty man boast in his might; let not a (BA)rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts (BB)boast in this, that he [f]understands and knows Me, that I am Yahweh who (BC)shows lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I (BD)delight in these things,” declares Yahweh.
25 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet (BE)uncircumcised— 26 Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of Ammon, and Moab and (BF)all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are (BG)uncircumcised of heart.”

2 Oh, that I had in the desert(D)
a lodging place for travelers,
so that I might leave my people
and go away from them;
for they are all adulterers,(E)
a crowd of unfaithful(F) people.
3 “They make ready their tongue
like a bow, to shoot lies;(G)
it is not by truth
that they triumph[b] in the land.
They go from one sin to another;
they do not acknowledge(H) me,”
declares the Lord.
4 “Beware of your friends;(I)
do not trust anyone in your clan.(J)
For every one of them is a deceiver,[c](K)
and every friend a slanderer.(L)
5 Friend deceives friend,(M)
and no one speaks the truth.(N)
They have taught their tongues to lie;(O)
they weary themselves with sinning.
6 You[d] live in the midst of deception;(P)
in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,”
declares the Lord.
7 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says:
“See, I will refine(Q) and test(R) them,
for what else can I do
because of the sin of my people?
8 Their tongue(S) is a deadly arrow;
it speaks deceitfully.
With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors,(T)
but in their hearts they set traps(U) for them.(V)
9 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(W) myself
on such a nation as this?”
10 I will weep and wail for the mountains
and take up a lament concerning the wilderness grasslands.(X)
They are desolate and untraveled,
and the lowing of cattle is not heard.
The birds(Y) have all fled
and the animals are gone.
11 “I will make Jerusalem a heap(Z) of ruins,
a haunt of jackals;(AA)
and I will lay waste the towns of Judah(AB)
so no one can live there.”(AC)
12 Who is wise(AD) enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?
13 The Lord said, “It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law.(AE) 14 Instead, they have followed(AF) the stubbornness of their hearts;(AG) they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.” 15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “See, I will make this people eat bitter food(AH) and drink poisoned water.(AI) 16 I will scatter them among nations(AJ) that neither they nor their ancestors have known,(AK) and I will pursue them with the sword(AL) until I have made an end of them.”(AM)
17 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Consider now! Call for the wailing women(AN) to come;
send for the most skillful of them.
18 Let them come quickly
and wail over us
till our eyes overflow with tears
and water streams from our eyelids.(AO)
19 The sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
‘How ruined(AP) we are!
How great is our shame!
We must leave our land
because our houses are in ruins.’”
20 Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord;
open your ears to the words of his mouth.(AQ)
Teach your daughters how to wail;
teach one another a lament.(AR)
21 Death has climbed in through our windows(AS)
and has entered our fortresses;
it has removed the children from the streets
and the young men(AT) from the public squares.
22 Say, “This is what the Lord declares:
“‘Dead bodies will lie
like dung(AU) on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
with no one to gather them.’”
23 This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom(AV)
or the strong boast of their strength(AW)
or the rich boast of their riches,(AX)
24 but let the one who boasts boast(AY) about this:
that they have the understanding to know(AZ) me,
that I am the Lord,(BA) who exercises kindness,(BB)
justice and righteousness(BC) on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
25 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh(BD)— 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places.[e](BE) For all these nations are really uncircumcised,(BF) and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.(BG)”

2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
3 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the Lord.
4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
5 And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.
6 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the Lord.
7 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?
8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
9 Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.
12 Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
13 And the Lord saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
15 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
16 I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
17 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:
18 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.
19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.
20 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.
21 For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
22 Speak, Thus saith the Lord, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.
23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
25 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
