⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. ^(A)Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

^8 (A)Be sober-minded; ^(B)be watchful. Your ^(C)adversary the devil ^(D)prowls around ^(E)like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ^9 (F)Resist him, ^(G)firm in your faith, knowing that ^(H)the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

²⁷ and ^(A)give no opportunity to the devil.

^11 (A)Put on ^(B)the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against ^(C)the schemes of the devil. ¹² For ^(D)we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against ^(E)the rulers, against the authorities, against ^(F)the cosmic powers over ^(G)this present darkness, against ^(H)the spiritual forces of evil ^(I)in the heavenly places.

^6 (A)Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

² for ^(A)forty days, ^(B)being tempted by the devil. ^(C)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, ^(D)he was hungry. ³ The devil said to him, “If you are ^(E)the Son of God, command ^(F)this stone to become bread.” ⁴ And Jesus answered him, ^(G)“It is written, ^(H)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” ^5 (I)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, ⁶ and said to him, “To you ^(J)I will give all this authority and their glory, ^(K)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. ⁷ If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” ⁸ And Jesus answered him, ^(L)“It is written,

^9 (O)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are ^(P)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰ for it is written,

¹¹ and

¹² And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ^(S)‘You shall not ^(T)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ¹³ And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him ^(U)until an opportune time.

³ And ^(A)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(B)the Son of God, command ^(C)these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴ But he answered, ^(D)“It is written,

^5 (F)Then the devil took him to ^(G)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple ⁶ and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again ^(I)it is written, ^(J)‘You shall not ^(K)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ^8 (L)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(M)Satan! For ^(N)it is written,

¹¹ Then the devil left him, and behold, ^(Q)angels came and were ministering to him.

⁹ Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to ^(A)the Father of spirits ^(B)and live?

³ For, being ignorant of ^(A)the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.
