⁵³ Are you greater than our father Abraham?^(A) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

⁵⁴ Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,^(B) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.^{(C) 55} Though you do not know him,^(D) I know him.^(E) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.^{(F) 56} Your father Abraham^(G) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it^(H) and was glad.”

⁵⁷ “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

⁵⁸ “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,^(I) I am!”^(J)

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(B) 38} Whoever believes^(C) in me, as Scripture has said,^(D) rivers of living water^(E) will flow from within them.”^{[a](F) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(I)

⁴⁰ On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”^(J)

⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?^{(K) 42} Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants^(L) and from Bethlehem,^(M) the town where David lived?” ⁴³ Thus the people were divided^(N) because of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.^(O)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

⁴⁵ Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

⁴⁶ “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”^(P) the guards replied.

⁹ Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.^(A) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?^(B) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.^(C) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. ¹¹ Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.^(D)

²⁸ I give them eternal life,^(A) and they shall never perish;^(B) no one will snatch them out of my hand.^{(C) 29} My Father, who has given them to me,^(D) is greater than all^[a];^(E) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one.”^(F)

³ I will give you every place where you set your foot,^(A) as I promised Moses.^(B)

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest^(A) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are^(B)—yet he did not sin.^(C)
