53 (A)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
    And to whom has (B)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    (C)and like a root out of dry ground;
(D)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
(E)He was despised and rejected[b] by men,
    a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d] grief;[e]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
    he was despised, and (F)we esteemed him not.

(G)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    (H)smitten by God, and afflicted.
(I)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    (J)and with his wounds we are healed.
(K)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(L)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    (M)yet he opened not his mouth;
(N)like a (O)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, (P)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    (Q)and with a rich man in his death,
although (R)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet (S)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[g]
(T)when his soul makes[h] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(U)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[i] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (V)the righteous one, my servant,
    (W)make many to be accounted righteous,
    (X)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (Y)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[j]
    (Z)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[k]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
(AA)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 (A)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, (B)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, (C)one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is (D)one of the twelve, (E)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes (F)as it is written of him, but (G)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (H)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

22 (I)And as they were eating, he took bread, and after (J)blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; (K)this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had (L)given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, (M)“This is my (N)blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for (O)many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

26 (P)And when they had sung a hymn, (Q)they went out to (R)the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will (S)strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, (T)I will go before you to Galilee.” 29 (U)Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30 And (V)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before (W)the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But (X)he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 (Y)And they went (Z)to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him (AA)Peter and James and John, and began (AB)to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, (AC)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and (AD)watch.”[b] 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground (AE)and prayed that, if it were possible, (AF)the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, (AG)“Abba, Father, (AH)all things are possible for you. Remove (AI)this cup from me. (AJ)Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 (AK)Watch and (AL)pray that you may not (AM)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, (AN)saying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (AO)their eyes were very heavy, and (AP)they did not know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? (AQ)It is enough; (AR)the hour has come. (AS)The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (AT)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (AU)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (AV)“Rabbi!” And he (AW)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (AX)sword and struck the servant[c] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (AY)Day after day I was with you in the temple (AZ)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (BA)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (BB)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (BC)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

53 (BD)And (BE)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (BF)And (BG)Peter had followed him at a distance, (BH)right into (BI)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (BJ)the guards and (BK)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[d] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (BL)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (BM)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (BN)“We heard him say, (BO)‘I will destroy this temple (BP)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (BQ)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[e] 61 But (BR)he remained silent and made no answer. (BS)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you (BT)the Christ, the Son of (BU)the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and (BV)you will see the Son of Man (BW)seated at the right hand of Power, and (BX)coming with the clouds of heaven.”

The Resurrection

20 (A)Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that (B)the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. The Resurrection

28 (A)Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and (B)the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for (C)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (D)His appearance was like lightning, and (E)his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and (F)became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, (G)as he said. Come, see the place where he[a] lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, (H)he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb (I)with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus (J)met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and (K)took hold of his feet and (L)worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; (M)go and tell (N)my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 While they were going, behold, some of (O)the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, (P)‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to (Q)the governor's ears, we will (R)satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews (S)to this day.

The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples (T)went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they (U)worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, (V)“All authority (W)in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 (X)Go therefore and (Y)make disciples of (Z)all nations, (AA)baptizing them (AB)in[b] (AC)the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them (AD)to observe all that (AE)I have commanded you.
