He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

¹³Behold, ^(A)my servant shall act wisely;^[a]
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
¹⁴As many were astonished at you—
    ^(B)his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
¹⁵so ^(C)shall he sprinkle^[b] many nations.
    ^(D)Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,
^(E)for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 ^(F)Who has believed what he has heard from us?^[c]
    And to whom has ^(G)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
²For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    ^(H)and like a root out of dry ground;
^(I)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
³^(J)He was despised and rejected^[d] by men,
    a man of sorrows^[e] and acquainted with^[f] grief;^[g]
and as one from whom men hide their faces^[h]
    he was despised, and ^(K)we esteemed him not.

⁴^(L)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    ^(M)smitten by God, and afflicted.
⁵^(N)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    ^(O)and with his wounds we are healed.
⁶^(P)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
^(Q)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

⁷He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    ^(R)yet he opened not his mouth;
^(S)like a ^(T)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
⁸By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, ^(U)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
⁹And they made his grave with the wicked
    ^(V)and with a rich man in his death,
although ^(W)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

¹⁰Yet ^(X)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;^[i]
^(Y)when his soul makes^[j] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
^(Z)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
¹¹Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see^[k] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall ^(AA)the righteous one, my servant,
    ^(AB)make many to be accounted righteous,
    ^(AC)and he shall bear their iniquities.
¹²^(AD)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,^[l]
    ^(AE)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,^[m]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
^(AF)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Philippians 2:5-11

⁵^(A)Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,^[a] ⁶^(B)who, though he was in ^(C)the form of God, did not count equality with God ^(D)a thing to be grasped,^[b] ⁷but ^(E)emptied himself, by taking the form of a ^(F)servant,^[c] ^(G)being born in the likeness of men. ⁸And being found in human form, he humbled himself by ^(H)becoming obedient to the point of death, ^(I)even death on a cross. ⁹^(J)Therefore ^(K)God has ^(L)highly exalted him and bestowed on him ^(M)the name that is above every name, ¹⁰so that at the name of Jesus ^(N)every knee should bow, ^(O)in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹and ^(P)every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is ^(Q)Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

15 ^(A)And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests ^(B)held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And ^(C)they bound Jesus and ^(D)led him away and ^(E)delivered him over to ^(F)Pilate. ²^(G)And Pilate asked him, ^(H)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, ^(I)“You have said so.” ³And the chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴And Pilate again asked him, ^(J)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” ⁵But Jesus ^(K)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

⁶^(L)Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. ⁷And among the rebels in prison, who had ^(M)committed murder ^(N)in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. ⁸And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. ⁹And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” ¹⁰For he perceived that ^(O)it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. ¹¹But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. ¹²And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with ^(P)the man you call the King of the Jews?” ¹³And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” ¹⁴And Pilate said to them, “Why? ^(Q)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” ¹⁵So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having ^(R)scourged^[a] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

¹⁶^(S)And the soldiers led him away inside ^(T)the palace (that is, ^(U)the governor's headquarters),^[b] and they called together the whole ^(V)battalion.^[c] ¹⁷And they clothed him in ^(W)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸And they began to salute him, ^(X)“Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹And they were striking his head with a reed and ^(Y)spitting on him and ^(Z)kneeling down in homage to him. ²⁰And when they had ^(AA)mocked him, they stripped him of ^(AB)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^(AC)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

²¹^(AD)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ²²^(AE)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). ²³And they offered him wine mixed with ^(AF)myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴And they crucified him and ^(AG)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. ²⁵And ^(AH)it was the third hour^[d] when they crucified him. ²⁶And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^(AI)“The King of the Jews.” ²⁷And with him they crucified two ^(AJ)robbers, ^(AK)one on his right and one on his left.^[e] ²⁹And ^(AL)those who passed by derided him, ^(AM)wagging their heads and saying, ^(AN)“Aha! ^(AO)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰save yourself, and come down from the cross!” ³¹So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^(AP)“He saved others; ^(AQ)he cannot save himself. ³²Let ^(AR)the Christ, ^(AS)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^(AT)see and believe.” ^(AU)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

³³And when the sixth hour^[f] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.^[g] ³⁴And at the ninth hour Jesus ^(AV)cried with a loud voice, ^(AW)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ³⁵And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” ³⁶And someone ran and filled a sponge with ^(AX)sour wine, put it on a reed ^(AY)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” ³⁷And Jesus ^(AZ)uttered a loud cry and ^(BA)breathed his last. ³⁸And ^(BB)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. ³⁹^(BC)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he^[h] breathed his last, he said, ^(BD)“Truly this man was the Son^[i] of God!”
