Israel Refined for God's Glory

48 Hear this, O house of Jacob,
    (A)who are called by the name of Israel,
    and (B)who came from the waters of Judah,
(C)who swear by the name of the Lord
    and confess the God of Israel,
    but not in truth or right.
For they call themselves after the holy city,
    (D)and stay themselves on the God of Israel;
    the Lord of hosts is his name.

“The former things (E)I declared of old;
    they went out from my mouth, and I announced them;
    then suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
Because I know that (F)you are obstinate,
    and your neck is an iron sinew
    and your forehead brass,
(G)I declared them to you from of old,
    before they came to pass I announced them to you,
lest you should say, (H)‘My idol did them,
    my carved image and my metal image commanded them.’

“You have heard; now see all this;
    and will you not declare it?
From this time forth (I)I announce to you new things,
    hidden things that you have not known.
They are created now, not long ago;
    before today you have never heard of them,
    lest you should say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’
You have never heard, you have never known,
    from of old your ear has not been opened.
For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously,
    and that (J)from before birth you were called a rebel.

(K)“For my name's sake I defer my anger;
    for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,
    that I may not cut you off.
10 Behold, I have refined you, (L)but not as silver;
    (M)I have tried[a] you in the furnace of affliction.
11 (N)For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it,
    for how should my name[b] be profaned?
    (O)My glory I will not give to another.

The Lord's Call to Israel

12 “Listen to me, O Jacob,
    and Israel, whom I called!
I am he; (P)I am the first,
    and I am the last.
13 My hand (Q)laid the foundation of the earth,
    and my right hand (R)spread out the heavens;
(S)when I call to them,
    they stand forth together.

14 “Assemble, all of you, and listen!
    (T)Who among them has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;
    (U)he shall perform his purpose on Babylon,
    and his arm shall be against (V)the Chaldeans.
15 (W)I, even I, have spoken and called him;
    I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way.
16 (X)Draw near to me, hear this:
    from the beginning I have not spoken in secret,
    from the time it came to be I have been there.”
And now (Y)the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit.

17 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches you to profit,
    who leads you in the way you should go.
18 (Z)Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments!
    (AA)Then your peace would have been like a river,
    and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
19 (AB)your offspring would have been like the sand,
    and your descendants like its grains;
their name would never be cut off
    or destroyed from before me.”

20 (AC)Go out from Babylon, flee from (AD)Chaldea,
    declare this (AE)with a shout of joy, proclaim it,
send it out to the end of the earth;
    say, (AF)“The Lord has redeemed his servant Jacob!”
21 (AG)They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts;
    (AH)he made water flow for them from the rock;
    he split the rock and the water gushed out.

22 (AI)“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen to me, (AJ)O coastlands,
    and give attention, you peoples (AK)from afar.
(AL)The Lord called me from the womb,
    from the body of my mother he named my name.
(AM)He made my mouth like a sharp sword;
    (AN)in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow;
    in his quiver he hid me away.
And he said to me, “You are my servant,
    Israel, (AO)in whom I will be glorified.”[c]
(AP)But I said, “I have labored in vain;
    I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my right is with the Lord,
    and my recompense with my God.”

(AQ)And now the Lord says,
    he (AR)who formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him;
    and that Israel might be gathered to him—
for (AS)I am honored in the eyes of the Lord,
    and my God has become my strength—
he says:
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
    to raise up the tribes of Jacob
    and to bring back the preserved of Israel;
(AT)I will make you (AU)as a light for the nations,
    that (AV)my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the Lord,
    (AW)the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,
(AX)to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation,
    the servant of rulers:
(AY)“Kings shall see and arise;
    princes, and they shall prostrate themselves;
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

The Restoration of Israel

Thus says the Lord:
(AZ)“In a (BA)time of favor I have answered you;
    in a day of salvation I have helped you;
I will keep you (BB)and give you
    as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
    (BC)to apportion the desolate heritages,
(BD)saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’
    to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’
(BE)They shall feed along the ways;
    on all bare heights shall be their pasture;
10 (BF)they shall not hunger or thirst,
    neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them,
for he who has pity on them (BG)will lead them,
    and by springs of water will guide them.
11 (BH)And I will make all my mountains a road,
    and my highways shall be raised up.
12 (BI)Behold, these shall come from afar,
    and behold, (BJ)these from the north and from the west,[d]
    and these from the land of Syene.”[e]

13 (BK)Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;
    break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord (BL)has comforted his people
    and will have compassion on his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, (BM)“The Lord has forsaken me;
    my Lord has forgotten me.”

15 (BN)“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
    that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
    yet I will not forget you.
16 Behold, (BO)I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls are continually before me.
17 Your builders make haste;[f]
    (BP)your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you.
18 (BQ)Lift up your eyes around and see;
    they all gather, they come to you.
(BR)As I live, declares the Lord,
    (BS)you shall put them all on as an ornament;
    you shall bind them on as a bride does.

19 “Surely your waste and your desolate places
    and your devastated land—
(BT)surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants,
    and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 (BU)The children of your bereavement
    will yet say in your ears:
(BV)‘The place is too narrow for me;
    make room for me to dwell in.’
21 Then you will say in your heart:
    ‘Who has borne me these?
(BW)I was bereaved and barren,
    exiled and put away,
    but who has brought up these?
Behold, I was left alone;
    from where have these come?’”

22 Thus says the Lord God:
“Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations,
    (BX)and raise my signal to the peoples;
(BY)and they shall bring your sons in their arms,[g]
    and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 (BZ)Kings shall be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.
(CA)With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,
    and (CB)lick the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;
    (CC)those who wait for me (CD)shall not be put to shame.”

24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty,
    or the captives of a tyrant[h] be rescued?
25 For thus says the Lord:
(CE)“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken,
    and the prey of the tyrant be rescued,
for I will contend with those who contend with you,
    and I will save your children.
26 (CF)I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
    and they shall be drunk (CG)with their own blood as with wine.
Then all flesh shall know
    that (CH)I am the Lord your Savior,
    and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Israel's Sin and the Servant's Obedience

50 Thus says the Lord:
“Where is (CI)your mother's certificate of divorce,
    with which (CJ)I sent her away?
Or (CK)which of my creditors is it
    to whom I have sold you?
(CL)Behold, for your iniquities you were sold,
    and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
(CM)Why, when I came, was there no man;
    why, when I called, was there no one to answer?
(CN)Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
    Or have I no power to deliver?
(CO)Behold, by my rebuke (CP)I dry up the sea,
    (CQ)I make the rivers a desert;
(CR)their fish stink for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
(CS)I clothe the heavens with blackness
    and make sackcloth their covering.”

The Lord God has given (CT)me
    the tongue of those who are taught,
that (CU)I may know how to sustain with a word
    (CV)him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
    he awakens my ear
    to hear as those who are taught.
(CW)The Lord God has opened my ear,
    (CX)and I was not rebellious;
    I turned not backward.
(CY)I gave my back to those who strike,
    and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
    from disgrace and spitting.

But the Lord God helps me;
    therefore I have not been disgraced;
(CZ)therefore I have set my face like a flint,
    and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
    (DA)He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
    Let us stand up together.
Who is my adversary?
    Let him come near to me.
(DB)Behold, the Lord God helps me;
    who will declare me guilty?
Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment;
    the moth will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears the Lord
    and obeys (DC)the voice of his servant?
(DD)Let him who walks in darkness
    and has no light
trust in the name of the Lord
    and rely on his God.
11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
    who equip yourselves with burning torches!
Walk by the light of your fire,
    and by the torches that you have kindled!
(DE)This you have from my hand:
    you shall lie down in torment.

The Lord's Comfort for Zion

51 (DF)“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
    you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
    and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father
    and to Sarah who bore you;
for (DG)he was but one when I called him,
    that I might bless him and multiply him.
For the Lord (DH)comforts Zion;
    he comforts all her waste places
and makes her wilderness like (DI)Eden,
    her desert like (DJ)the garden of the Lord;
(DK)joy and gladness will be found in her,
    thanksgiving and the voice of song.

(DL)“Give attention to me, my people,
    and give ear to me, my nation;
(DM)for a law[i] will go out from me,
    and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
(DN)My righteousness draws near,
    my salvation has gone out,
    and my arms will judge the peoples;
(DO)the coastlands hope for me,
    and for my arm they wait.
(DP)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    and look at the earth beneath;
(DQ)for the heavens vanish like smoke,
    the earth will wear out like a garment,
    and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;[j]
(DR)but my salvation will be forever,
    and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

(DS)“Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
    the people (DT)in whose heart is my law;
(DU)fear not the reproach of man,
    nor be dismayed at their revilings.
(DV)For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
    and the worm will eat them like wool,
(DW)but my righteousness will be forever,
    and my salvation to all generations.”

(DX)Awake, awake, (DY)put on strength,
    O (DZ)arm of the Lord;
awake, (EA)as in days of old,
    the generations of long ago.
Was it not you who cut (EB)Rahab in pieces,
    who pierced (EC)the dragon?
10 (ED)Was it not you who dried up the sea,
    the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a way
    for the redeemed to pass over?
11 (EE)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, I am he (EF)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of (EG)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made (EH)like grass,
13 and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    (EI)who stretched out the heavens
    and (EJ)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of (EK)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of (EL)the oppressor?
14 (EM)He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
    he shall not die and go down (EN)to the pit,
    neither shall his bread be lacking.
15 I am the Lord your God,
    (EO)who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
16 (EP)And I have put my words in your mouth
    (EQ)and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
(ER)establishing[k] the heavens
    and (ES)laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

17 (ET)Wake yourself, wake yourself,
    stand up, O Jerusalem,
(EU)you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
    the bowl, (EV)the cup of staggering.
18 (EW)There is none to guide her
    among all the sons she has borne;
there is none to take her by the hand
    among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (EX)These two things have happened to you—
    who will console you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
    who will comfort you?[l]
20 (EY)Your sons have fainted;
    they lie at the head of every street
    like an (EZ)antelope (FA)in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
    the rebuke of your God.

21 (FB)Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted,
    who are drunk, but not with wine:
22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
    your God (FC)who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand (FD)the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
23 (FE)and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
    (FF)who have said to you,
    ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and (FG)you have made your back like the ground
    and like the street for them to pass over.”

Stubborn Israel

48 “Listen to this, you descendants of Jacob,
    you who are called by the name of Israel(A)
    and come from the line of Judah,(B)
you who take oaths(C) in the name of the Lord(D)
    and invoke(E) the God of Israel—
    but not in truth(F) or righteousness—
you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city(G)
    and claim to rely(H) on the God of Israel—
    the Lord Almighty is his name:(I)
I foretold the former things(J) long ago,
    my mouth announced(K) them and I made them known;
    then suddenly(L) I acted, and they came to pass.
For I knew how stubborn(M) you were;
    your neck muscles(N) were iron,
    your forehead(O) was bronze.
Therefore I told you these things long ago;
    before they happened I announced(P) them to you
so that you could not say,
    ‘My images brought them about;(Q)
    my wooden image and metal god ordained them.’
You have heard these things; look at them all.
    Will you not admit them?

“From now on I will tell you of new things,(R)
    of hidden things unknown to you.
They are created(S) now, and not long ago;(T)
    you have not heard of them before today.
So you cannot say,
    ‘Yes, I knew(U) of them.’
You have neither heard nor understood;(V)
    from of old your ears(W) have not been open.
Well do I know how treacherous(X) you are;
    you were called a rebel(Y) from birth.
For my own name’s sake(Z) I delay my wrath;(AA)
    for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,
    so as not to destroy you completely.(AB)
10 See, I have refined(AC) you, though not as silver;
    I have tested(AD) you in the furnace(AE) of affliction.
11 For my own sake,(AF) for my own sake, I do this.
    How can I let myself be defamed?(AG)
    I will not yield my glory to another.(AH)

Israel Freed

12 “Listen(AI) to me, Jacob,
    Israel, whom I have called:(AJ)
I am he;(AK)
    I am the first and I am the last.(AL)
13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth,(AM)
    and my right hand spread out the heavens;(AN)
when I summon them,
    they all stand up together.(AO)

14 “Come together,(AP) all of you, and listen:
    Which of the idols has foretold(AQ) these things?
The Lord’s chosen ally(AR)
    will carry out his purpose(AS) against Babylon;(AT)
    his arm will be against the Babylonians.[a]
15 I, even I, have spoken;
    yes, I have called(AU) him.
I will bring him,
    and he will succeed(AV) in his mission.

16 “Come near(AW) me and listen(AX) to this:

“From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret;(AY)
    at the time it happens, I am there.”

And now the Sovereign Lord(AZ) has sent(BA) me,
    endowed with his Spirit.(BB)

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(BC) the Holy One(BD) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(BE) you what is best for you,
    who directs(BF) you in the way(BG) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(BH) to my commands,
    your peace(BI) would have been like a river,(BJ)
    your well-being(BK) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(BL) would have been like the sand,(BM)
    your children like its numberless grains;(BN)
their name would never be blotted out(BO)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(BP) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(BQ)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(BR)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(BS) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(BT) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(BU) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(BV)

22 “There is no peace,”(BW) says the Lord, “for the wicked.”(BX)

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen(BY) to me, you islands;(BZ)
    hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born(CA) the Lord called(CB) me;
    from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.(CC)
He made my mouth(CD) like a sharpened sword,(CE)
    in the shadow of his hand(CF) he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow(CG)
    and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,(CH)
    Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.(CI)
But I said, “I have labored in vain;(CJ)
    I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,(CK)
    and my reward(CL) is with my God.”(CM)

And now the Lord says—
    he who formed me in the womb(CN) to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel(CO) to himself,
for I am[b] honored(CP) in the eyes of the Lord
    and my God has been my strength(CQ)
he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant(CR)
    to restore the tribes of Jacob
    and bring back those of Israel I have kept.(CS)
I will also make you a light(CT) for the Gentiles,(CU)
    that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”(CV)

This is what the Lord says—
    the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel(CW)
to him who was despised(CX) and abhorred by the nation,
    to the servant of rulers:
“Kings(CY) will see you and stand up,
    princes will see and bow down,(CZ)
because of the Lord, who is faithful,(DA)
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen(DB) you.”

Restoration of Israel

This is what the Lord says:

“In the time of my favor(DC) I will answer you,
    and in the day of salvation I will help you;(DD)
I will keep(DE) you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people,(DF)
to restore the land(DG)
    and to reassign its desolate inheritances,(DH)
to say to the captives,(DI) ‘Come out,’
    and to those in darkness,(DJ) ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.(DK)
10 They will neither hunger nor thirst,(DL)
    nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.(DM)
He who has compassion(DN) on them will guide(DO) them
    and lead them beside springs(DP) of water.
11 I will turn all my mountains into roads,
    and my highways(DQ) will be raised up.(DR)
12 See, they will come from afar(DS)
    some from the north, some from the west,(DT)
    some from the region of Aswan.[c]

13 Shout for joy,(DU) you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;(DV)
    burst into song, you mountains!(DW)
For the Lord comforts(DX) his people
    and will have compassion(DY) on his afflicted ones.(DZ)

14 But Zion(EA) said, “The Lord has forsaken(EB) me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child(EC) she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!(ED)
16 See, I have engraved(EE) you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls(EF) are ever before me.
17 Your children hasten back,
    and those who laid you waste(EG) depart from you.
18 Lift up your eyes and look around;
    all your children gather(EH) and come to you.
As surely as I live,(EI)” declares the Lord,
    “you will wear(EJ) them all as ornaments;
    you will put them on, like a bride.

19 “Though you were ruined and made desolate(EK)
    and your land laid waste,(EL)
now you will be too small for your people,(EM)
    and those who devoured(EN) you will be far away.
20 The children born during your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
    give us more space to live in.’(EO)
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who bore me these?(EP)
I was bereaved(EQ) and barren;
    I was exiled and rejected.(ER)
    Who brought these(ES) up?
I was left(ET) all alone,(EU)
    but these—where have they come from?’”

22 This is what the Sovereign Lord(EV) says:

“See, I will beckon to the nations,
    I will lift up my banner(EW) to the peoples;
they will bring(EX) your sons in their arms
    and carry your daughters on their hips.(EY)
23 Kings(EZ) will be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.(FA)
They will bow down(FB) before you with their faces to the ground;
    they will lick the dust(FC) at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;(FD)
    those who hope(FE) in me will not be disappointed.(FF)

24 Can plunder be taken from warriors,(FG)
    or captives be rescued from the fierce[d]?

25 But this is what the Lord says:

“Yes, captives(FH) will be taken from warriors,(FI)
    and plunder retrieved from the fierce;(FJ)
I will contend with those who contend with you,(FK)
    and your children I will save.(FL)
26 I will make your oppressors(FM) eat(FN) their own flesh;
    they will be drunk on their own blood,(FO) as with wine.
Then all mankind will know(FP)
    that I, the Lord, am your Savior,(FQ)
    your Redeemer,(FR) the Mighty One of Jacob.(FS)

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce(FT)
    with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
    did I sell(FU) you?
Because of your sins(FV) you were sold;(FW)
    because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
When I came, why was there no one?
    When I called, why was there no one to answer?(FX)
Was my arm too short(FY) to deliver you?
    Do I lack the strength(FZ) to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke(GA) I dry up the sea,(GB)
    I turn rivers into a desert;(GC)
their fish rot for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with darkness(GD)
    and make sackcloth(GE) its covering.”

The Sovereign Lord(GF) has given me a well-instructed tongue,(GG)
    to know the word that sustains the weary.(GH)
He wakens me morning by morning,(GI)
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.(GJ)
The Sovereign Lord(GK) has opened my ears;(GL)
    I have not been rebellious,(GM)
    I have not turned away.
I offered my back to those who beat(GN) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;(GO)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.(GP)
Because the Sovereign Lord(GQ) helps(GR) me,
    I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,(GS)
    and I know I will not be put to shame.(GT)
He who vindicates(GU) me is near.(GV)
    Who then will bring charges against me?(GW)
    Let us face each other!(GX)
Who is my accuser?
    Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign Lord(GY) who helps(GZ) me.
    Who will condemn(HA) me?
They will all wear out like a garment;
    the moths(HB) will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears(HC) the Lord
    and obeys(HD) the word of his servant?(HE)
Let the one who walks in the dark,
    who has no light,(HF)
trust(HG) in the name of the Lord
    and rely on their God.
11 But now, all you who light fires
    and provide yourselves with flaming torches,(HH)
go, walk in the light of your fires(HI)
    and of the torches you have set ablaze.
This is what you shall receive from my hand:(HJ)
    You will lie down in torment.(HK)

Everlasting Salvation for Zion

51 “Listen(HL) to me, you who pursue righteousness(HM)
    and who seek(HN) the Lord:
Look to the rock(HO) from which you were cut
    and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
look to Abraham,(HP) your father,
    and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
    and I blessed him and made him many.(HQ)
The Lord will surely comfort(HR) Zion(HS)
    and will look with compassion on all her ruins;(HT)
he will make her deserts like Eden,(HU)
    her wastelands(HV) like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness(HW) will be found in her,
    thanksgiving(HX) and the sound of singing.

“Listen to me, my people;(HY)
    hear me,(HZ) my nation:
Instruction(IA) will go out from me;
    my justice(IB) will become a light to the nations.(IC)
My righteousness draws near speedily,
    my salvation(ID) is on the way,(IE)
    and my arm(IF) will bring justice to the nations.
The islands(IG) will look to me
    and wait in hope(IH) for my arm.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke,(II)
    the earth will wear out like a garment(IJ)
    and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation(IK) will last forever,(IL)
    my righteousness will never fail.(IM)

“Hear me, you who know what is right,(IN)
    you people who have taken my instruction to heart:(IO)
Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals
    or be terrified by their insults.(IP)
For the moth will eat them up like a garment;(IQ)
    the worm(IR) will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,(IS)
    my salvation through all generations.”

Awake, awake,(IT) arm(IU) of the Lord,
    clothe yourself with strength!(IV)
Awake, as in days gone by,
    as in generations of old.(IW)
Was it not you who cut Rahab(IX) to pieces,
    who pierced that monster(IY) through?
10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,(IZ)
    the waters of the great deep,(JA)
who made a road in the depths of the sea(JB)
    so that the redeemed(JC) might cross over?
11 Those the Lord has rescued(JD) will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;(JE)
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy(JF) will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.(JG)

12 “I, even I, am he who comforts(JH) you.
    Who are you that you fear(JI) mere mortals,(JJ)
    human beings who are but grass,(JK)
13 that you forget(JL) the Lord your Maker,(JM)
    who stretches out the heavens(JN)
    and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror(JO) every day
    because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?(JP)
14     The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;(JQ)
they will not die in their dungeon,
    nor will they lack bread.(JR)
15 For I am the Lord your God,
    who stirs up the sea(JS) so that its waves roar(JT)
    the Lord Almighty(JU) is his name.
16 I have put my words in your mouth(JV)
    and covered you with the shadow of my hand(JW)
I who set the heavens in place,
    who laid the foundations of the earth,(JX)
    and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.(JY)’”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

17 Awake, awake!(JZ)
    Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup(KA) of his wrath,(KB)
you who have drained to its dregs(KC)
    the goblet that makes people stagger.(KD)
18 Among all the children(KE) she bore
    there was none to guide her;(KF)
among all the children she reared
    there was none to take her by the hand.(KG)
19 These double calamities(KH) have come upon you—
    who can comfort you?(KI)
ruin and destruction,(KJ) famine(KK) and sword(KL)
    who can[e] console you?
20 Your children have fainted;
    they lie at every street corner,(KM)
    like antelope caught in a net.(KN)
They are filled with the wrath(KO) of the Lord,
    with the rebuke(KP) of your God.

21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted(KQ) one,
    made drunk,(KR) but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
    your God, who defends(KS) his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup(KT) that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,(KU)
    who said to you,
    ‘Fall prostrate(KV) that we may walk(KW) on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
    like a street to be walked on.”(KX)

The Wedding at Cana

On (A)the third day there was a wedding at (B)Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with (C)his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, (D)“Woman, (E)what does this have to do with me? (F)My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now there were six stone water jars there (G)for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty (H)gallons.[a] Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted (I)the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested (J)his glory. And (K)his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and (L)his brothers[b] and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 (M)The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus (N)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (O)In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make (P)my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, (Q)“Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, (R)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, (S)“Destroy this temple, and in three days (T)I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,[c] and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about (U)the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, (V)his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed (W)the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name (X)when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus (Y)on his part did not entrust himself to them, because (Z)he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for (AA)he himself knew what was in man.

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(A) Jesus’ mother(B) was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman,[a](C) why do you involve me?”(D) Jesus replied. “My hour(E) has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”(F)

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(G) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(H) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(I) through which he revealed his glory;(J) and his disciples believed in him.(K)

12 After this he went down to Capernaum(L) with his mother(M) and brothers(N) and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(O)

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(P) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(Q) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(R) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(S) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(T) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[c](U)

18 The Jews(V) then responded to him, “What sign(W) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(X)

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(Y)

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(Z) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(AA) Then they believed the scripture(AB) and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AC) many people saw the signs(AD) he was performing and believed(AE) in his name.[d] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(AF) for he knew what was in each person.(AG)
