¹⁴ They are now dead,^(A) they live no more;
    their spirits^(B) do not rise.
You punished them and brought them to ruin;^(C)
    you wiped out all memory of them.^(D)

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’^[a](A)
    She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,^(B)
    a haunt for every unclean bird,
    a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.^(C)
3 For all the nations have drunk
    the maddening wine of her adulteries.^(D)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,^(E)
    and the merchants of the earth grew rich^(F) from her excessive luxuries.”^(G)

⁷ The name of the righteous^(A) is used in blessings,^[a]
    but the name of the wicked^(B) will rot.^(C)

¹⁸ “Of what value^(A) is an idol^(B) carved by a craftsman?
    Or an image^(C) that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
    he makes idols that cannot speak.^(D)
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’
    Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’^(E)
Can it give guidance?
    It is covered with gold and silver;^(F)
    there is no breath in it.”^(G)

²⁰ The Lord is in his holy temple;^(H)
    let all the earth be silent^(I) before him.

¹² “I, even I, am he who comforts^(A) you.
    Who are you that you fear^(B) mere mortals,^(C)
    human beings who are but grass,^(D)
13 that you forget^(E) the Lord your Maker,^(F)
    who stretches out the heavens^(G)
    and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror^(H) every day
    because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?^(I)

¹⁹ But you are cast out^(A) of your tomb
    like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,^(B)
    with those pierced by the sword,^(C)
    those who descend to the stones of the pit.^(D)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
²⁰     you will not join them in burial,^(E)
for you have destroyed your land
    and killed your people.

Let the offspring^(F) of the wicked^(G)
    never be mentioned^(H) again.
²¹ Prepare a place to slaughter his children^(I)
    for the sins of their ancestors;^(J)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
    and cover the earth with their cities.

²² “I will rise up^(K) against them,”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name^(L) and survivors,
    her offspring and descendants,^(M)”
declares the Lord.

²⁸ They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor^(A)
    and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
