(A)Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants[a] regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, (B)so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are (C)brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

(D)Teach and urge these things. If anyone (E)teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with (F)the sound[b] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching (G)that accords with godliness, (H)he is puffed up with conceit and (I)understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for (J)controversy and for (K)quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people (L)who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, (M)imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But (N)godliness (O)with contentment is great gain, for (P)we brought nothing into the world, and[c] we cannot take anything out of the world. But (Q)if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But (R)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, (S)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that (T)plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of (U)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, (V)O man of God, (W)flee these things. (X)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 (Y)Fight the good fight of the faith. (Z)Take hold of the eternal life (AA)to which you were called and about which you made (AB)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 (AC)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, (AD)who in his testimony before[d] Pontius Pilate made (AE)the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until (AF)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display (AG)at the proper time—he who is (AH)the blessed and only Sovereign, (AI)the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 (AJ)who alone has immortality, (AK)who dwells in (AL)unapproachable light, (AM)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in (AN)this present age, charge them (AO)not to be haughty, nor (AP)to set their hopes on (AQ)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (AR)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, (AS)to be rich in good works, to be generous and (AT)ready to share, 19 thus (AU)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may (AV)take hold of (AW)that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. (AX)Avoid the (AY)irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

(AZ)Grace be with you.[e]

Greeting

Paul, (BA)an apostle of Christ Jesus (BB)by the will of God according to (BC)the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, (BD)my beloved child:

(BE)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

(BF)I thank God (BG)whom I serve, as did my ancestors, (BH)with a clear conscience, as I remember you (BI)constantly in my prayers night and day. (BJ)As I remember your tears, (BK)I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of (BL)your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and (BM)your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you (BN)to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us (BO)a spirit not of fear but (BP)of power and love and self-control.

Therefore (BQ)do not be ashamed of (BR)the testimony about our Lord, nor of (BS)me his prisoner, but (BT)share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, (BU)who saved us and (BV)called us to[f] a holy calling, (BW)not because of our works but because of (BX)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus (BY)before the ages began,[g] 10 and which now has (BZ)been manifested through (CA)the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, (CB)who abolished death and (CC)brought life and (CD)immortality to light through the gospel, 11 (CE)for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 (CF)which is why I suffer as I do. But (CG)I am not ashamed, for (CH)I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until (CI)that day (CJ)what has been entrusted to me.[h] 13 (CK)Follow (CL)the pattern of (CM)the sound[i] words (CN)that you have heard from me, in (CO)the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit (CP)who dwells within us, guard (CQ)the good deposit entrusted to you.

15 You are aware that (CR)all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to (CS)the household of Onesiphorus, for he often (CT)refreshed me and was not ashamed of (CU)my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome (CV)he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on (CW)that day!—and you well know all the service he (CX)rendered at Ephesus.

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus

You then, (CY)my child, (CZ)be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and (DA)what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses (DB)entrust to faithful men,[j] (DC)who will be able to teach others also. (DD)Share in suffering as (DE)a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier (DF)gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. (DG)An athlete is not (DH)crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is (DI)the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, (DJ)risen from the dead, the (DK)offspring of David, (DL)as preached in my gospel, (DM)for which I am suffering, (DN)bound with chains as a criminal. But (DO)the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore (DP)I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain (DQ)the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with (DR)eternal glory. 11 The saying is (DS)trustworthy, for:

(DT)If we have died with him, we will also (DU)live with him;
12 (DV)if we endure, we will also reign with him;
(DW)if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 (DX)if we are faithless, (DY)he remains faithful—

for (DZ)he cannot deny himself.

A Worker Approved by God

14 Remind them of these things, and (EA)charge them before God[k] (EB)not to quarrel about words, (EC)which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,[l] a worker (ED)who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But (EE)avoid (EF)irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are (EG)Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, (EH)saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: (EI)“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone (EJ)who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

20 Now in (EK)a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, (EL)some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, (EM)if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable,[m] he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, (EN)ready for every good work.

22 So (EO)flee (EP)youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with (EQ)those who call on the Lord (ER)from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant (ES)controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And (ET)the Lord's servant[n] must not be quarrelsome but (EU)kind to everyone, (EV)able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents (EW)with gentleness. God (EX)may perhaps grant them repentance (EY)leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (EZ)the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

Godlessness in the Last Days

But understand this, that (FA)in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be (FB)lovers of self, (FC)lovers of money, (FD)proud, (FE)arrogant, abusive, (FF)disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (FG)heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, (FH)not loving good, treacherous, reckless, (FI)swollen with conceit, (FJ)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but (FK)denying its power. (FL)Avoid such people. For among them are (FM)those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to (FN)arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as (FO)Jannes and Jambres (FP)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, (FQ)men corrupted in mind and (FR)disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, (FS)as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10 (FT)You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me (FU)at Antioch, (FV)at Iconium, and (FW)at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet (FX)from them all (FY)the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to (FZ)live a godly life in Christ Jesus (GA)will be persecuted, 13 while (GB)evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and (GC)being deceived. 14 But as for you, (GD)continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[o] you learned it 15 and how (GE)from childhood you have been acquainted with (GF)the sacred writings, (GG)which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 (GH)All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that (GI)the man of God[p] may be complete, (GJ)equipped (GK)for every good work.

Preach the Word

(GL)I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, (GM)who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (GN)his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; (GO)reprove, rebuke, and (GP)exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (GQ)For the time is coming when people will not endure (GR)sound[q] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and (GS)will turn away from listening to the truth and (GT)wander off into myths. As for you, (GU)always be sober-minded, (GV)endure suffering, do the work of (GW)an evangelist, (GX)fulfill your ministry.

For (GY)I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my (GZ)departure has come. (HA)I have fought the good fight, (HB)I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is (HC)laid up for me (HD)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, (HE)the righteous judge, will award to me on (HF)that day, and not only to me but also to all (HG)who have loved his appearing.

Personal Instructions

(HH)Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For (HI)Demas, (HJ)in love with (HK)this present world, (HL)has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia,[r] (HM)Titus to Dalmatia. 11 (HN)Luke alone is with me. Get (HO)Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 (HP)Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 (HQ)Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; (HR)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. (HS)May it not be charged against them! 17 But (HT)the Lord stood by me and (HU)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and (HV)all the Gentiles might hear it. So (HW)I was rescued (HX)from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. (HY)To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

19 Greet (HZ)Prisca and Aquila, and (IA)the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left (IB)Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 (IC)Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.[s]

22 The Lord be (ID)with your spirit. (IE)Grace be with you.[t]

Greeting

Paul, a servant[u] of God and (IF)an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and (IG)their knowledge of the truth, (IH)which accords with godliness, (II)in hope of eternal life, which God, (IJ)who never lies, (IK)promised (IL)before the ages began[v] and (IM)at the proper time manifested in his word[w] (IN)through the preaching (IO)with which I have been entrusted (IP)by the command of God our Savior;

To Titus, (IQ)my true child in (IR)a common faith:

(IS)Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications for Elders

(IT)This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and (IU)appoint elders in every town as I directed you— (IV)if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,[x] and his children are believers[y] and not open to the charge of (IW)debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer,[z] (IX)as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not (IY)be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent (IZ)or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, (JA)and disciplined. He must (JB)hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in (JC)sound[aa] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

10 For there are many who are insubordinate, (JD)empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of (JE)the circumcision party.[ab] 11 They must be silenced, since (JF)they are upsetting whole families by teaching (JG)for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 (JH)One of the Cretans,[ac] a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”[ad] 13 This testimony is true. Therefore (JI)rebuke them (JJ)sharply, that they (JK)may be sound in the faith, 14 (JL)not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and (JM)the commands of people (JN)who turn away from the truth. 15 (JO)To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and (JP)unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both (JQ)their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 (JR)They profess to know God, but they (JS)deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, (JT)unfit for any good work.

Teach Sound Doctrine

But as for you, teach what accords with (JU)sound[ae] doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, (JV)sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. (JW)Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, (JX)not slanderers (JY)or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, (JZ)pure, (KA)working at home, kind, and (KB)submissive to their own husbands, (KC)that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge (KD)the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be (KE)a model of good works, and in your teaching (KF)show integrity, (KG)dignity, and (KH)sound speech that cannot be condemned, (KI)so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. (KJ)Bondservants[af] are to be submissive to their own masters (KK)in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, (KL)but showing all good faith, (KM)so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

11 For (KN)the grace of God (KO)has appeared, bringing salvation (KP)for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and (KQ)worldly passions, and (KR)to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in (KS)the present age, 13 (KT)waiting for our blessed (KU)hope, the (KV)appearing of the glory of our great (KW)God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 (KX)who gave himself for us to (KY)redeem us from all lawlessness and (KZ)to purify for himself (LA)a people for his own possession who are (LB)zealous for good works.

15 Declare these things; exhort and (LC)rebuke with all authority. (LD)Let no one disregard you.

Be Ready for Every Good Work

Remind them (LE)to be submissive to rulers and authorities, (LF)to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, (LG)to speak evil of no one, (LH)to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and (LI)to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For (LJ)we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when (LK)the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, (LL)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but (LM)according to his own mercy, by (LN)the washing of regeneration and (LO)renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he (LP)poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that (LQ)being justified by his grace we might become (LR)heirs (LS)according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is (LT)trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful (LU)to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. But (LV)avoid foolish (LW)controversies, (LX)genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for (LY)they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 As for a person who stirs up division, (LZ)after warning him once and then twice, (MA)have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

Final Instructions and Greetings

12 When I send Artemas or (MB)Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me (MC)at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and (MD)Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. 14 And let our people learn (ME)to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not (MF)be unfruitful.

15 All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

(MG)Grace be with you all.

Greeting

Paul, (MH)a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and (MI)Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and (MJ)Archippus our (MK)fellow soldier, and (ML)the church in your house:

(MM)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon's Love and Faith

(MN)I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I (MO)hear of your love and (MP)of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full (MQ)knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.[ag] For I have derived much joy and (MR)comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints (MS)have been refreshed through you.

Paul's Plea for Onesimus

Accordingly, (MT)though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do (MU)what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now (MV)a prisoner also for Christ Jesus— 10 I appeal to you for (MW)my child, (MX)Onesimus,[ah] (MY)whose father I became in my imprisonment. 11 (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) 12 I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. 13 I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me (MZ)on your behalf (NA)during my imprisonment for the gospel, 14 but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be (NB)by compulsion but of your own accord. 15 For this perhaps is why (NC)he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, 16 (ND)no longer as a bondservant[ai] but more than a bondservant, as (NE)a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, (NF)both in the flesh and in the Lord.

17 So if you consider me (NG)your partner, receive him as you would receive me. 18 If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 (NH)I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. 20 Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. (NI)Refresh my heart in Christ.

21 (NJ)Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for (NK)I am hoping that (NL)through your prayers (NM)I will be graciously given to you.

Final Greetings

23 (NN)Epaphras, my (NO)fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24 and so do (NP)Mark, (NQ)Aristarchus, (NR)Demas, and (NS)Luke, my fellow workers.

25 (NT)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

The Supremacy of God's Son

Long ago, at many times and (NU)in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but (NV)in these last days (NW)he has spoken to us by (NX)his Son, whom he appointed (NY)the heir of all things, (NZ)through whom also he created (OA)the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and (OB)the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (OC)After making purification for sins, (OD)he sat down (OE)at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name (OF)he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

(OG)“You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”?

Or again,

(OH)“I will be to him a father,
    and he shall be to me a son”?

And again, when he brings (OI)the firstborn into the world, he says,

(OJ)“Let all God's angels worship him.”

Of the angels he says,

(OK)“He makes his angels winds,
    and his ministers a flame of fire.”

But of the Son he says,

(OL)“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
    the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, (OM)has anointed you
    with (ON)the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

10 And,

(OO)“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment,
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
    like a garment they will be changed.[aj]
But you are (OP)the same,
    and your years will have no end.”

13 And to which of the angels has he ever said,

(OQ)“Sit at my right hand
    (OR)until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits (OS)sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to (OT)inherit salvation?
