Israels Weigerung, Buße zu tun, bringt es zu Fall

Hört dies, ihr Priester, und du, Haus Israel, achte darauf, und du, Königshaus, horche! Denn euch droht das Gericht, weil ihr eine Schlinge geworden seid für Mizpa und ein ausgebreitetes Fangnetz auf dem Tabor.

Die Abtrünnigen haben die Verdorbenheit weit getrieben; aber ich habe ihnen allen eine Züchtigung zugedacht.

Ich kenne Ephraim wohl, und Israel ist vor mir nicht verborgen; [ich weiß], dass du, Ephraim, jetzt Hurerei getrieben hast, dass Israel sich verunreinigt hat.

Ihre Taten erlauben ihnen nicht, zu ihrem Gott umzukehren; denn ein Geist der Hurerei ist in ihren Herzen, und den Herrn erkennen sie nicht.

Aber Israels Stolz[a] wird sich als Zeuge gegen ihn erheben; und Israel und Ephraim werden fallen durch eigene Schuld; auch Juda wird mit ihnen fallen.

Mit ihren Schafen und mit ihren Rindern werden sie kommen, um den Herrn zu suchen; aber sie werden ihn nicht finden; er hat sich von ihnen entfernt.

Sie sind dem Herrn untreu geworden, denn sie haben fremde Kinder gezeugt; jetzt wird der Neumond sie fressen samt ihren Erbteilen.

Stoßt in die Posaune in Gibea, in das Schopharhorn in Rama; schlagt Lärm in Beth-Awen, nimm dich in acht, Benjamin!

Ephraim soll zur Wüste werden am Tag der Züchtigung; was ich den Stämmen Israels angekündigt habe, das kommt gewiss!

10 Die Fürsten Judas sind denen gleich, welche die Grenze verrücken; über sie will ich meinen Grimm ausschütten wie Wasser.

11 Ephraim wird unterdrückt, zerschlagen im Gericht; denn er ist willig [Menschen]geboten gefolgt.[b]

12 Ich aber wurde für Ephraim wie eine Motte und für das Haus Juda wie ein nagender Wurm.

13 Und als Ephraim seine Krankheit sah und Juda sein Geschwür, da lief Ephraim nach Assyrien und sandte zum König Jareb[c]; er aber kann euch nicht heilen und das Geschwür nicht von euch nehmen.

14 Denn ich bin wie ein Löwe gegen Ephraim und wie ein junger Löwe gegen das Haus Juda; ich, ja ich, zerreiße und gehe davon und nehme weg, dass niemand retten kann.

15 Ich werde davongehen, an meinen Ort zurückkehren, bis sie ihre Schuld erkennen[d] und mein Angesicht suchen werden; in ihrer Drangsal werden sie mich ernstlich suchen:

Israel und Juda sind schuldig

»Hört zu, ihr Priester, passt gut auf, ihr Führer Israels! Auch der König mit seinem Hofstaat soll herhören!

Ihr habt die Aufgabe, das Recht zu wahren.[a] Doch ihr seid wie eine tödliche Falle in Mizpa, wie ein Netz, mit dem man auf dem Berg Tabor Vögel fängt! Den Bund, den ich mit euch geschlossen habe, habt ihr verraten. Aber nun habt ihr eure Gottlosigkeit zu weit getrieben![b] Darum werde ich euch alle bestrafen!

Denn ich kenne Ephraim gut. Nichts, was dort geschieht, bleibt meinen Augen verborgen. Ephraim ist fremden Göttern nachgelaufen, Israel hat sich mit seinen Taten unrein gemacht. Sie sind so in ihre Schuld verstrickt, dass sie nicht mehr zu mir umkehren können. Sie sind vom Götzendienst[c] besessen und erkennen nicht, dass ich der Herr, ihr Gott, bin! Durch ihren Hochmut sprechen sie sich selbst das Urteil, ihre Schuld stürzt sie ins Verderben. Auch den Bewohnern von Juda wird es nicht anders ergehen.

Sie werden dann Schafe und Rinder opfern, um mich, den Herrn, gnädig zu stimmen; aber ich werde sie allein lassen, so dass sie mich nicht finden können. Sie haben mir, dem Herrn, die Treue gebrochen und mit ihren Huren Kinder gezeugt. Darum werden sie in kürzester Zeit vernichtet[d] – mit allem, was ihnen gehört.«

Gottes Klage über sein Volk

»Stoßt ins Horn in Gibea, und blast die Trompeten in Rama! Stimmt lautes Kriegsgeschrei an in Bet-Awen! Denn der Feind ist euch auf den Fersen, ihr vom Stamm Benjamin! Der Tag der Abrechnung kommt, an dem ich Ephraim zur Wüste mache. Alles, was ich den Stämmen Israels angedroht habe, wird wahr!

10 Auch auf die führenden Männer Judas wird mein Zorn niedergehen wie ein Gewitterregen! Denn sie verrücken die Grenzen und reißen so fremdes Land an sich. 11 Ja, Ephraim wird unterdrückt und aller Rechte beraubt, denn es hat dort Hilfe gesucht, wo es keine Hilfe gibt! 12 Ich, der Herr, bereite Ephraim Schmerzen wie eine eiternde Wunde, und ich quäle Juda wie ein bösartiges Geschwür.

13 Als Ephraim und Juda merkten, wie schlimm es um sie stand, suchte Ephraim Hilfe beim König von Assyrien. Doch auch dieser mächtige König kann euch nicht gesund machen und von euren eitrigen Geschwüren heilen!

14 Denn ich, der Herr, greife Ephraim und Juda an wie ein junger, hungriger Löwe; ich zerreiße sie und schleppe sie als Beute fort, und niemand kann sie retten. 15 Dann ziehe ich mich in meine Wohnung im Himmel zurück, bis sie ihre Schuld einsehen und nach mir fragen. Announcement of Sin and Judgment

Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, you Israelites![a]

Their wicked deeds do not allow them to return to their God;

The arrogance of Israel testifies against it;
Israel and Ephraim will be overthrown[o] because[p] of their iniquity.
Even Judah will be brought down[q] with them.

The Futility of Sacrificial Ritual without Moral Obedience

Although they bring their flocks and herds[r]
to seek[s] the favor of the Lord,[t]
They will not find him—
he has withdrawn himself from them!
They have committed treason[u] against the Lord,
because they bore illegitimate children.
Soon[v] the new moon festival will devour them and their fields.

The Prophet’s Declaration of Judgment

Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah!
Sound the trumpet in Ramah!
Sound the alarm in Beth Aven;[w]
tremble in fear,[x] O Benjamin!
Ephraim will be ruined in the day of judgment.[y]
What I am declaring[z] to the tribes of Israel will certainly take place![aa]

The Oppressors of the Helpless Will Be Oppressed

10 The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary markers.
I will pour out my rage on them like a torrential flood.[ab]
11 Ephraim will be oppressed,[ac] crushed[ad] under judgment,[ae]
because he was determined to pursue worthless idols.[af]

The Curse of the Incurable Wound

12 I will be like a moth to Ephraim,
like wood rot[ag] to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw[ah] his sickness
and Judah saw his wound,
then Ephraim turned[ai] to Assyria,
and begged[aj] its great king[ak] for help.
But he will not be able to heal you.
He cannot cure your wound![al]

The Lion Will Carry Israel Off Into Exile

14 I will be like a lion to Ephraim,
like a young lion to the house of Judah.
I myself will tear them to pieces,
then I will carry them off, and no one will be able to rescue them!
15 Then I will return again to my lair
until they have suffered their punishment.[am]
Then they will seek me;[an]
in their distress they will earnestly seek me.

The Niphal stem used here is also frequently used in reference to divine judgment: “be overthrown,” of nations and armies (Jer 6:15; 8:12; Dan 11:19, 33, 34, 41; BDB 505 s.v. כָּשַׁל 1.b). This figurative use of כָּשַׁל is often used in collocation with נָפַל (nafal, “to fall”; Isa 3:8; 31:3; 8:15; Jer 6:15; Dan 11:19).

When a participle is used in reference to the future, it often denotes an imminent future situation and may be rendered, “about to” (e.g., Gen 6:17; 15:14; 20:3; 37:30; 41:25; 49:29; Exod 9:17-18; Deut 28:31; 1 Sam 3:11; 1 Kgs 2:2; 20:22; 2 Kgs 7:2).   30. Hosea 5:11 sn The term רְצוּץ (retsuts, “crushed”) is a metaphor for weakness (e.g., 2 Kgs 18:21; Isa 36:6; 42:3) and oppression (e.g., Deut 28:33; 1 Sam 12:3, 4; Amos 4:1; Isa 58:6). Here it is used as a figure to describe the devastating effects of the Lord’s judgment.
  31. Hosea 5:11 tn Heb “crushed of judgment” (רְצוּץ מִשְׁפָּט, retsuts mishpat). The second term is a genitive of cause (“crushed because of judgment” or “crushed under judgment”) rather than respect (“crushed in judgment,” as in many English versions).
