For (A)a tent[a] was prepared, the first section, in which were (B)the lampstand and (C)the table and (D)the bread of the Presence.[b] It is called the Holy Place. Behind (E)the second curtain was a second section[c] called the Most Holy Place, having the golden (F)altar of incense and (G)the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was (H)a golden urn holding the manna, and (I)Aaron's staff that budded, and (J)the tablets of the covenant. Above it were (K)the cherubim of glory overshadowing (L)the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

These preparations having thus been made, (M)the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only (N)the high priest goes, and he but (O)once a year, and not without taking blood, (P)which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that (Q)the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age).[d] According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered (R)that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with (S)food and drink and (T)various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

Redemption Through the Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest (U)of the good things that have come,[e] then through (V)the greater and more perfect tent ((W)not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he (X)entered (Y)once for all into the holy places, not by means of (Z)the blood of goats and calves but (AA)by means of his own blood, (AB)thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if (AC)the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with (AD)the ashes of a heifer, sanctify[f] for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will (AE)the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit (AF)offered himself without blemish to God, (AG)purify our[g] conscience (AH)from dead works (AI)to serve the living God.

15 Therefore he is (AJ)the mediator of a new covenant, so that (AK)those who are called may (AL)receive the promised eternal inheritance, (AM)since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.[h] 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For (AN)a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated (AO)without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took (AP)the blood of calves and goats, (AQ)with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (AR)“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both (AS)the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and (AT)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

23 Thus it was necessary for (AU)the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places (AV)made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God (AW)on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as (AX)the high priest enters (AY)the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, (AZ)he has appeared (BA)once for all (BB)at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as (BC)it is appointed for man to die once, and (BD)after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once (BE)to bear the sins of (BF)many, will appear (BG)a second time, (BH)not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly (BI)waiting for him.

Christ's Sacrifice Once for All

10 For since the law has but (BJ)a shadow (BK)of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, (BL)it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But (BM)in these sacrifices (BN)there is a reminder of sins every year. For (BO)it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Consequently, (BP)when Christ[i] came into the world, he said,

(BQ)“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
    but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
    as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in (BR)sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, (BS)“Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will (BT)we have been sanctified through the offering of (BU)the body of Jesus Christ (BV)once for all.

11 And every priest stands (BW)daily at his service, (BX)offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, (BY)which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ[j] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he (BZ)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time (CA)until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering (CB)he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 (CC)“This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
    and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,

(CD)“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

The Full Assurance of Faith

19 (CE)Therefore, brothers,[k] since we have confidence to enter (CF)the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (CG)the new and living way that he opened for us through (CH)the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have (CI)a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts (CJ)sprinkled clean (CK)from an evil conscience and our bodies (CL)washed with pure water.

A tabernacle(A) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(B) and the table(C) with its consecrated bread;(D) this was called the Holy Place.(E) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(F) which had the golden altar of incense(G) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(H) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(I) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(J) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(K) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(L) overshadowing the atonement cover.(M) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(N) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(O) the inner room,(P) and that only once a year,(Q) and never without blood,(R) which he offered for himself(S) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(T) The Holy Spirit was showing(U) by this that the way(V) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(W) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(X) were not able to clear the conscience(Y) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(Z) and drink(AA) and various ceremonial washings(AB)—external regulations(AC) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(AD) of the good things that are now already here,[a](AE) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(AF) that is not made with human hands,(AG) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(AH) but he entered the Most Holy Place(AI) once for all(AJ) by his own blood,(AK) thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(AL) and the ashes of a heifer(AM) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(AN) offered himself(AO) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(AP) from acts that lead to death,[c](AQ) so that we may serve the living God!(AR)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(AS) of a new covenant,(AT) that those who are called(AU) may receive the promised(AV) eternal inheritance(AW)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(AX)

16 In the case of a will,[d] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(AY) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(AZ) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(BA) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(BB) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[e](BC) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(BD) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(BE)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(BF) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(BG) he entered heaven itself,(BH) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(BI) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(BJ) every year with blood that is not his own.(BK) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(BL) But he has appeared(BM) once for all(BN) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(BO) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(BP) and after that to face judgment,(BQ) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(BR) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(BS) not to bear sin,(BT) but to bring salvation(BU) to those who are waiting for him.(BV)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(BW) of the good things(BX) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(BY) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(BZ) those who draw near to worship.(CA) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(CB) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(CC) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(CD) to take away sins.(CE)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(CF) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;(CG)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(CH)
    I have come to do your will, my God.’”[f](CI)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(CJ)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(CK) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(CL) through the sacrifice of the body(CM) of Jesus Christ once for all.(CN)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(CO) which can never take away sins.(CP) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(CQ) he sat down at the right hand of God,(CR) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(CS) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(CT) forever those who are being made holy.(CU)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(CV) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
    after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
    and I will write them on their minds.”[g](CW)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[h](CX)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(CY) to enter the Most Holy Place(CZ) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(DA) opened for us through the curtain,(DB) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(DC) over the house of God,(DD) 22 let us draw near to God(DE) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(DF) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(DG) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(DH)

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

10 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
