The Coming Glory of God’s House

In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month, the word of the Lord came [a]by Haggai the prophet, saying: “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying: (A)‘Who is left among you who saw this [b]temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, (B)is this not in your eyes as nothing? Yet now (C)be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts. (D)According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so (E)My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!’

“For thus says the Lord of hosts: (F)‘Once more (it is a little while) (G)I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to (H)the [c]Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this [d]temple with (I)glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. (J)‘The glory of this latter [e]temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give (K)peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.”

A Call to Repentance(A)

In the eighth month (B)of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came (C)to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of (D)Iddo the prophet, saying, “The Lord has been very angry with your fathers. Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Return (E)to Me,” says the Lord of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. “Do not be like your fathers, (F)to whom the former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: (G)“Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says the Lord.

“Your fathers, where are they?
And the prophets, do they live forever?
Yet surely (H)My words and My statutes,
Which I commanded My servants the prophets,
Did they not overtake your fathers?

“So they returned and said:

(I)‘Just as the Lord of hosts determined to do to us,
According to our ways and according to our deeds,
So He has dealt with us.’ ” ’ ”

A Call to Return to the Lord

In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,(A) the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah(B) son of Berekiah,(C) the son of Iddo:(D)

“The Lord was very angry(E) with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return(F) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’(G) says the Lord Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors,(H) to whom the earlier prophets(I) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways(J) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,(K) declares the Lord.(L) Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words(M) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?(N)

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,(O) just as he determined to do.’”(P)

The People Are Defiled

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 11 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Now, (A)ask the priests concerning the law, saying, 12 “If one carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the edge he touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?” ’ ”

Then the priests answered and said, “No.”

13 And Haggai said, “If one who is (B)unclean because of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?”

So the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.”

14 Then Haggai answered and said, (C)“ ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before Me,’ says the Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

Promised Blessing

15 ‘And now, carefully (D)consider from this day forward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the Lord 16 since those days, (E)when one came to a heap of twenty ephahs, there were but ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty baths from the press, there were but twenty. 17 (F)I struck you with blight and mildew and hail (G)in all the labors of your hands; (H)yet you did not turn to Me,’ says the Lord. 18 ‘Consider now from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from (I)the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid—consider it: 19 (J)Is the seed still in the barn? As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yielded fruit. But from this day I will (K)bless you.’ ”

Blessings for a Defiled People

The priests answered, “No.”

13 Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”

“Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.(E)

14 Then Haggai said, “‘So it is with this people(F) and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer(G) there is defiled.

15 “‘Now give careful thought(H) to this from this day on[a]—consider how things were before one stone was laid(I) on another in the Lord’s temple.(J) 16 When anyone came to a heap(K) of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat(L) to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.(M) 17 I struck all the work of your hands(N) with blight,(O) mildew and hail,(P) yet you did not return(Q) to me,’ declares the Lord.(R) 18 ‘From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought(S) to the day when the foundation(T) of the Lord’s temple was laid. Vision of the Horses

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet: I saw by night, and behold, (A)a man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were (B)horses: red, sorrel, and white. Then I said, (C)“My lord, what are these?” So the angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.

10 And the man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, (D)“These are the ones whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro throughout the earth.”

11 (E)So they answered the Angel of the Lord, who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is [a]resting quietly.”

The Lord Will Comfort Zion

12 Then the Angel of the Lord answered and said, “O Lord of hosts, (F)how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which You were angry (G)these seventy years?”

13 And the Lord answered the angel who talked to me, with (H)good and comforting words. 14 So the angel who spoke with me said to me, [b]“Proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“I am (I)zealous[c] for Jerusalem
And for Zion with great [d]zeal.
15 I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease;
For (J)I was a little angry,
And they helped—but with evil intent.

16 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord:

(K)“I am returning to Jerusalem with mercy;
My (L)house (M)shall be built in it,” says the Lord of hosts,
“And (N)a surveyor’s line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem.” ’

17 “Again proclaim, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“My cities shall again [e]spread out through prosperity;
(O)The Lord will again comfort Zion,
And (P)will again choose Jerusalem.” ’ ”

Vision of the Horns

18 Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were four (Q)horns. 19 And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these?”

So he answered me, (R)“These are the [f]horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”

20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?”

So he said, “These are the (S)horns that scattered Judah, so that no one could lift up his head; but [g]the craftsmen are coming to terrify them, to cast out the horns of the nations that (T)lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.”

Vision of the Measuring Line

Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, (U)a man with a measuring line in his hand. So I said, “Where are you going?”

And he said to me, (V)“To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.”

And there was the angel who talked with me, going out; and another angel was coming out to meet him, who said to him, “Run, speak to this young man, saying: (W)‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it. For I,’ says the Lord, ‘will be (X)a wall of fire all around her, (Y)and I will be the glory in her midst.’ ”

Future Joy of Zion and Many Nations

“Up, up! Flee (Z)from the land of the north,” says the Lord; “for I have (AA)spread you abroad like the four winds of heaven,” says the Lord. “Up, Zion! (AB)Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.”

For thus says the Lord of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who (AC)touches you touches the [h]apple of His eye. For surely I will (AD)shake My hand against them, and they shall become [i]spoil for their servants. Then (AE)you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me.

10 (AF)“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I (AG)will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord. 11 (AH)“Many nations shall be joined to the Lord (AI)in that day, and they shall become (AJ)My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then (AK)you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. 12 And the Lord will (AL)take possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem. 13 (AM)Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for He is aroused (AN)from His holy habitation!”

Vision of the High Priest

Then he showed me (AO)Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and (AP)Satan[j] standing at his right hand to oppose him. And the Lord said to Satan, (AQ)“The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who (AR)has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! (AS)Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”

Now Joshua was clothed with (AT)filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel.

Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, (AU)and I will clothe you with rich robes.”

And I said, “Let them put a clean (AV)turban on his head.”

So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by.

The Coming Branch

Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts:

‘If you will walk in My ways,
And if you will (AW)keep My command,
Then you shall also (AX)judge My house,
And likewise have charge of My courts;
I will give you places to walk
Among these who (AY)stand here.

‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest,
You and your companions who sit before you,
For they are (AZ)a[k] wondrous sign;
For behold, I am bringing forth (BA)My Servant the (BB)BRANCH.
For behold, the stone
That I have laid before Joshua:
(BC)Upon the stone are (BD)seven eyes.
Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’
Says the Lord of hosts,
‘And (BE)I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
10 (BF)In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts,
‘Everyone will invite his neighbor
(BG)Under his vine and under his fig tree.’ ”

Vision of the Lampstand and Olive Trees

Now (BH)the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, (BI)as a man who is wakened out of his sleep. And he said to me, “What do you see?”

So I said, “I am looking, and there is (BJ)a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, (BK)and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps. (BL)Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, “What are these, my lord?”

Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?”

And I said, “No, my lord.”

So he answered and said to me:

“This is the word of the Lord to (BM)Zerubbabel:
(BN)‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’
Says the Lord of hosts.
‘Who are you, (BO)O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
And he shall bring forth (BP)the capstone
(BQ)With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ”

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

“The hands of Zerubbabel
(BR)Have laid the foundation of this [l]temple;
His hands (BS)shall also finish it.
Then (BT)you will know
That the (BU)Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.
10 For who has despised the day of (BV)small things?
For these seven rejoice to see
The [m]plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
(BW)They are the eyes of the Lord,
Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these (BX)two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What are these two olive branches that drip [n]into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden oil drains?”

13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these are?

And I said, “No, my lord.”

14 So he said, (BY)“These are the two [o]anointed ones, (BZ)who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.”

Vision of the Flying Scroll

Then I turned and raised my eyes, and saw there a flying (CA)scroll.

And he said to me, “What do you see?”

So I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.”

Then he said to me, “This is the (CB)curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth: ‘Every thief shall be expelled,’ according to this side of the scroll; and, ‘Every perjurer shall be expelled,’ according to that side of it.”

“I will send out the curse,” says the Lord of hosts;
“It shall enter the house of the (CC)thief
And the house of (CD)the one who swears falsely by My name.
It shall remain in the midst of his house
And consume (CE)it, with its timber and stones.”

Vision of the Woman in a Basket

Then the angel who talked with me came out and said to me, “Lift your eyes now, and see what this is that goes forth.”

So I asked, “What is it?” And he said, “It is a [p]basket that is going forth.”

He also said, “This is their resemblance throughout the earth: Here is a lead disc lifted up, and this is a woman sitting inside the basket”; then he said, “This is Wickedness!” And he thrust her down into the basket, and threw the lead [q]cover over its mouth. Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were two women, coming with the wind in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a (CF)stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven.

10 So I said to the (CG)angel who talked with me, “Where are they carrying the basket?”

11 And he said to me, “To (CH)build a house for it in (CI)the land of [r]Shinar; when it is ready, the basket will be set there on its base.”

The Man Among the Myrtle Trees

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.(A)

During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red(B) horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.(C)

I asked, “What are these, my lord?”

The angel(D) who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”(E)

10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”(F)

11 And they reported to the angel of the Lord(G) who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”(H)

12 Then the angel of the Lord said, “Lord Almighty, how long(I) will you withhold mercy(J) from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah,(K) which you have been angry with these seventy(L) years?” 13 So the Lord spoke(M) kind and comforting words(N) to the angel who talked with me.(O)

14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous(P) for Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure.(Q) I was only a little angry,(R) but they went too far with the punishment.’(S)

16 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will return(T) to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line(U) will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the Lord Almighty.(V)

17 “Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort(W) Zion and choose(X) Jerusalem.’”(Y)

Four Horns and Four Craftsmen

18 Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns. 19 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these?”

He answered me, “These are the horns(Z) that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.”

20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are these coming to do?”

He answered, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns(AA) against the land of Judah to scatter its people.”[a](AB)

A Man With a Measuring Line

[b]Then I looked up, and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand. I asked, “Where are you going?”

He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.”(AC)

While the angel who was speaking to me was leaving, another angel came to meet him and said to him: “Run, tell that young man, ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls(AD) because of the great number(AE) of people and animals in it.(AF) And I myself will be a wall(AG) of fire(AH) around it,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will be its glory(AI) within.’(AJ)

“Come! Come! Flee from the land of the north,” declares the Lord, “for I have scattered(AK) you to the four winds of heaven,”(AL) declares the Lord.(AM)

“Come, Zion! Escape,(AN) you who live in Daughter Babylon!”(AO) For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye(AP) I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them.[c](AQ) Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.(AR)

10 “Shout(AS) and be glad, Daughter Zion.(AT) For I am coming,(AU) and I will live among you,”(AV) declares the Lord.(AW) 11 “Many nations will be joined with the Lord in that day and will become my people.(AX) I will live among you and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.(AY) 12 The Lord will inherit(AZ) Judah(BA) as his portion in the holy land and will again choose(BB) Jerusalem. 13 Be still(BC) before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.(BD)

Clean Garments for the High Priest

Then he showed me Joshua(BE) the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan[d](BF) standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you,(BG) Satan! The Lord, who has chosen(BH) Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick(BI) snatched from the fire?”(BJ)

Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”

Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin,(BK) and I will put fine garments(BL) on you.”

Then I said, “Put a clean turban(BM) on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.

The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements,(BN) then you will govern my house(BO) and have charge(BP) of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.(BQ)

“‘Listen, High Priest(BR) Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic(BS) of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.(BT) See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua!(BU) There are seven eyes[e](BV) on that one stone,(BW) and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin(BX) of this land in a single day.

10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit(BY) under your vine and fig tree,(BZ)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

The Gold Lampstand and the Two Olive Trees

Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke(CA) me up, like someone awakened from sleep.(CB) He asked me, “What do you see?”(CC)

I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand(CD) with a bowl at the top and seven lamps(CE) on it, with seven channels to the lamps. Also there are two olive trees(CF) by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I replied.(CG)

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel:(CH) ‘Not(CI) by might nor by power,(CJ) but by my Spirit,’(CK) says the Lord Almighty.

“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground.(CL) Then he will bring out the capstone(CM) to shouts(CN) of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation(CO) of this temple; his hands will also complete it.(CP) Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me(CQ) to you.

10 “Who dares despise the day(CR) of small things,(CS) since the seven eyes(CT) of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone[f] in the hand of Zerubbabel?”(CU)

11 Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees(CV) on the right and the left of the lampstand?”

12 Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”

13 He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I said.

14 So he said, “These are the two who are anointed(CW) to[g] serve the Lord of all the earth.”

The Flying Scroll

I looked again, and there before me was a flying scroll.(CX)

He asked me, “What do you see?”(CY)

I answered, “I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.[h]

And he said to me, “This is the curse(CZ) that is going out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief(DA) will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely(DB) will be banished. The Lord Almighty declares, ‘I will send it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of anyone who swears falsely(DC) by my name. It will remain in that house and destroy it completely, both its timbers and its stones.(DD)’”

The Woman in a Basket

Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, “Look up and see what is appearing.”

I asked, “What is it?”

He replied, “It is a basket.(DE)” And he added, “This is the iniquity[i] of the people throughout the land.”

Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman! He said, “This is wickedness,” and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed its lead cover down on it.(DF)

Then I looked up—and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork,(DG) and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.

10 “Where are they taking the basket?” I asked the angel who was speaking to me.

11 He replied, “To the country of Babylonia[j](DH) to build a house(DI) for it. When the house is ready, the basket will be set there in its place.”(DJ)
