Genesis 32:22-31

Jacob Wrestles With God

²²That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons^(A) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.^(B) ²³After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.^(C) ²⁴So Jacob was left alone,^(D) and a man^(E) wrestled with him till daybreak. ²⁵When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip^(F) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. ²⁶Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”^(G)

²⁷The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,”^(H) he answered.

²⁸Then the man said, “Your name^(I) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[a]^(J) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”^(K)

²⁹Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”^(L)

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”^(M) Then he blessed^(N) him there.

³⁰So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[b] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,^(O) and yet my life was spared.”

³¹The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,^[c]^(P) and he was limping because of his hip.

Revelation 2:2-17

²I know your deeds,^(A) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested^(B) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.^(C) ³You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,^(D) and have not grown weary.

⁴Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.^(E) ⁵Consider how far you have fallen! Repent^(F) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand^(G) from its place. ⁶But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,^(H) which I also hate.

⁷Whoever has ears, let them hear^(I) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,^(J) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,^(K) which is in the paradise^(L) of God.

To the Church in Smyrna

⁸“To the angel of the church in Smyrna^(M) write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last,^(N) who died and came to life again.^(O) ⁹I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!^(P) I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not,^(Q) but are a synagogue of Satan.^(R) ¹⁰Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you,^(S) and you will suffer persecution for ten days.^(T) Be faithful,^(U) even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.^(V)

¹¹Whoever has ears, let them hear^(W) what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.^(X)

To the Church in Pergamum

¹²“To the angel of the church in Pergamum^(Y) write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.^(Z) ¹³I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,^(AA) not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,^(AB) who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.^(AC)

¹⁴Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:^(AD) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,^(AE) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols^(AF) and committed sexual immorality.^(AG) ¹⁵Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.^(AH) ¹⁶Repent^(AI) therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.^(AJ)

¹⁷Whoever has ears, let them hear^(AK) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,^(AL) I will give some of the hidden manna.^(AM) I will also give that person a white stone with a new name^(AN) written on it, known only to the one who receives it.^(AO)
