¹³ Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”

⁷ When the men of the place asked him about his wife, ^(A)he said, “She is my sister,” for ^(B)he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because ^(C)she was attractive in appearance.

⁵ Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.”

² And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, ^(A)“She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

¹² Besides, ^(A)she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. ¹³ And when ^(B)God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, ^(C)say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

^23 (A)For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ By no means! For then how could ^(A)God judge the world? ⁷ But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, ^(B)why am I still being condemned as a sinner? ⁸ And why not ^(C)do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

^44 (A)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. ^(B)He was a murderer from the beginning, and ^(C)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. ^(D)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Peter Denies Jesus

^69 (A)Now Peter was sitting outside ^(B)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” ⁷¹ And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus ^(C)of Nazareth.” ⁷² And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” ⁷³ After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for ^(D)your accent betrays you.” ⁷⁴ Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, ^(E)“Before the rooster crows, you will ^(F)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

⁴ Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: ^(A)the soul who sins shall die.
