² Then Zerubbabel^(A) son of Shealtiel and Joshua^(B) son of Jozadak set to work^(C) to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.

² Then Joshua^(A) son of Jozadak^(B) and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel^(C) and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses^(D) the man of God.

¹⁴ So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching^(A) of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus,^(B) Darius^(C) and Artaxerxes,^(D) kings of Persia.

Clean Garments for the High Priest

3 Then he showed me Joshua^(A) the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan^[a](B) standing at his right side to accuse him. ² The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you,^(C) Satan! The Lord, who has chosen^(D) Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick^(E) snatched from the fire?”^(F)

³ Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. ⁴ The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”

Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin,^(G) and I will put fine garments^(H) on you.”

²⁴ Not that we lord it over^(A) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.^(B)

¹¹ Take the silver and gold and make a crown,^(A) and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua^(B) son of Jozadak.^[a](C)

⁶ So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel:^(A) ‘Not^(B) by might nor by power,^(C) but by my Spirit,’^(D) says the Lord Almighty.

⁷ “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground.^(E) Then he will bring out the capstone^(F) to shouts^(G) of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

⁸ Then the word of the Lord came to me: ⁹ “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation^(H) of this temple; his hands will also complete it.^(I) Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me^(J) to you.

Zerubbabel the Lord’s Signet Ring

²⁰ The word of the Lord came to Haggai^(A) a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:^{(B) 21} “Tell Zerubbabel^(C) governor of Judah that I am going to shake^(D) the heavens and the earth. ²² I will overturn^(E) royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms.^(F) I will overthrow chariots^(G) and their drivers; horses and their riders^(H) will fall, each by the sword of his brother.^(I)

²³ “‘On that day,^(J)’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant^(K) Zerubbabel^(L) son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring,^(M) for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

⁴ But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the Lord. ‘Be strong,^(A) Joshua son of Jozadak,^(B) the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with^(C) you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ⁵ ‘This is what I covenanted^(D) with you when you came out of Egypt.^(E) And my Spirit^(F) remains among you. Do not fear.’^(G)

⁶ “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while^(H) I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,^(I) the sea and the dry land. ⁷ I will shake all nations, and what is desired^(J) by all nations will come, and I will fill this house^(K) with glory,^(L)’ says the Lord Almighty. ⁸ ‘The silver is mine and the gold^(M) is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ⁹ ‘The glory^(N) of this present house^(O) will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,^(P)’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
