Moise se roagă pentru poporul amărât
33 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Du-te şi porneşte de aici cu(A) poporul pe care l-ai scos din ţara Egiptului; suie-te în ţara pe care am jurat că o voi da lui Avraam, lui Isaac şi lui Iacov, zicând: ‘Seminţei(B) tale o voi da!’ 2 Voi(C) trimite înaintea ta un înger şi voi(D) izgoni pe canaaniţi, amoriţi, hetiţi, fereziţi, heviţi şi iebusiţi. 3 Suie-te în(E) ţara aceasta unde curge lapte şi miere. Dar(F) Eu nu Mă voi sui în mijlocul tău, ca să nu te prăpădesc(G) pe drum, căci eşti un popor(H) încăpăţânat.” 4 Când a auzit poporul aceste triste cuvinte, toţi s-au(I) întristat şi(J) nimeni nu şi-a pus podoabele pe el. 5 Şi Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Spune copiilor lui Israel: ‘Voi(K) sunteţi un popor încăpăţânat; numai o clipă dacă M-aş sui în(L) mijlocul tău, te-aş prăpădi. Aruncă-ţi acum podoabele de pe tine, şi voi(M) vedea ce-ţi voi face’.” 6 Copiii lui Israel şi-au scos de pe ei podoabele şi au plecat de la Muntele Horeb.
Moise mergând la cort
7 Moise a luat cortul lui şi l-a(N) întins afară din tabără, la o depărtare oarecare; l-a numit cortul întâlnirii. Şi toţi cei ce(O) întrebau pe Domnul se duceau la cortul întâlnirii, care era afară din tabără. 8 Când se ducea Moise la cort, tot poporul se scula în picioare; fiecare stătea la(P) uşa cortului său şi urmărea cu ochii pe Moise, până intra el în cort. 9 Şi când intra Moise în cort, stâlpul de nor se cobora şi se oprea la uşa cortului, şi Domnul(Q) vorbea cu Moise. 10 Tot poporul vedea stâlpul de nor oprindu-se la uşa cortului; tot poporul se scula şi se arunca(R) cu faţa la pământ la uşa cortului lui. 11 Domnul(S) vorbea cu Moise faţă în faţă, cum vorbeşte un om cu prietenul lui. Apoi, Moise se întorcea în tabără, dar tânărul lui slujitor, Iosua, fiul lui Nun, nu ieşea deloc din mijlocul cortului.
Moise cere să vadă slava lui Dumnezeu
12 Moise a zis Domnului: „Iată(T), Tu îmi zici: ‘Du pe poporul acesta!’ Şi nu-mi arăţi pe cine vei trimite cu mine. Însă Tu ai zis: ‘Eu(U) te cunosc pe nume şi ai căpătat trecere înaintea Mea!’ 13 Acum, dacă(V) am căpătat trecere înaintea Ta, arată-mi(W) căile Tale; atunci Te voi cunoaşte şi voi avea trecere înaintea Ta. Şi gândeşte-Te că neamul aceasta este poporul(X) Tău!” 14 Domnul a răspuns: „Voi merge Eu Însumi(Y) cu tine şi îţi voi da(Z) odihnă.” 15 Moise i-a zis: „Dacă(AA) nu mergi Tu Însuţi cu noi, nu ne lăsa să plecăm de aici. 16 Cum se va şti că am căpătat trecere înaintea Ta, eu şi poporul Tău? Oare nu(AB) când vei merge Tu cu noi şi când prin aceasta vom fi(AC) deosebiţi, eu şi poporul Tău, de toate popoarele de pe faţa pământului?” 17 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Voi(AD) face şi ceea ce-mi ceri acum, căci ai(AE) căpătat trecere înaintea Mea şi te cunosc pe nume!” 18 Moise a zis: „Arată-mi(AF) slava Ta!” 19 Domnul a răspuns: „Voi(AG) face să treacă pe dinaintea ta toată frumuseţea Mea şi voi chema Numele Domnului înaintea ta; Eu Mă(AH) îndur de cine vreau să Mă îndur şi am milă de cine vreau să am milă!” 20 Domnul a zis: „Faţa nu vei putea să Mi-o vezi, căci nu poate(AI) omul să Mă vadă şi să trăiască!” 21 Domnul a zis: „Iată un loc lângă Mine; vei sta pe stâncă. 22 Şi când va trece slava Mea, te voi pune în(AJ) crăpătura stâncii şi te voi acoperi(AK) cu mâna Mea până voi trece. 23 Iar când Îmi voi trage mâna la o parte de la tine, Mă vei vedea pe dinapoi; dar Faţa Mea nu(AL) se poate vedea.”

33 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Pleacă din locul acesta împreună cu poporul pe care l-ai scos din ţara Egiptului şi îndreaptă-te spre ţara pe care am jurat că o voi da lui Avraam, lui Isaac şi lui Iacov, zicând: «Seminţei[a] tale i-o voi da.» 2 Voi trimite un Înger[b] înaintea ta şi îi voi izgoni pe canaaniţi, pe amoriţi, pe hitiţi, pe periziţi, pe hiviţi şi pe iebusiţi. 3 Îndreaptă-te deci spre ţara aceasta în care curge lapte şi miere. Dar Eu Însumi nu voi veni împreună cu voi, ca să nu vă mistui pe drum, căci sunteţi un popor încăpăţânat.“
4 Când a auzit poporul aceste cuvinte aspre, a început să plângă şi nimeni nu şi-a pus podoabele pe el. 5 Căci Domnul îi zisese lui Moise: „Aşa să le spui israeliţilor: «Sunteţi un popor încăpăţânat; dacă pentru o clipă aş veni împreună cu voi, v-aş mistui. De aceea daţi-vă podoabele jos şi apoi mă voi hotărî ce voi face cu voi.»“ 6 Aşadar, israeliţii şi-au scos podoabele la muntele Horeb.
7 Moise luase un cort şi îl întinsese în afara taberei, la o oarecare distanţă. El l-a numit „cortul întâlnirii“[c]. Toţi aceia care doreau să-L întrebe pe Domnul, mergeau la „cortul întâlnirii“, în afara taberei. 8 Când se ducea Moise la cort, tot poporul se ridica în picioare şi fiecare om stătea la intrarea cortului său şi îl urmărea cu privirea pe Moise până când acesta intra în cort. 9 Când Moise intra în cort, stâlpul de nor se cobora şi se oprea la intrarea cortului, iar Domnul vorbea cu Moise. 10 Când vedea stâlpul de nor stând la intrarea în cort, tot poporul se ridica şi se pleca cu faţa la pământ, fiecare la intrarea cortului său. 11 Domnul obişnuia să vorbească cu Moise gură către gură, aşa cum vorbeşte un om cu prietenul său. Apoi Moise se întorcea în tabără; dar tânărul lui slujitor, Iosua, fiul lui Nun, nu se îndepărta de cort.
12 Moise I-a zis Domnului:
– Tu îmi porunceşti să conduc poporul acesta, dar nu-mi spui pe cine vei trimite cu mine, deşi mi-ai zis că mă cunoşti pe nume şi că am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine. 13 Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine, descoperă-mi căile Tale ca să Te cunosc şi să continui să am parte de bunăvoinţa Ta. Gândeşte-Te că neamul acesta este poporul Tău.
14 – Prezenţa Mea te va însoţi şi îţi voi da odihnă, i-a răspuns Domnul.
15 – Dacă nu vei merge Tu Însuţi cu noi, a spus Moise, nu ne trimite de aici. 16 Cum se va şti că eu şi poporul Tău am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine, dacă nu vei merge cu noi? În felul acesta eu şi poporul Tău vom fi deosebiţi de toate popoarele de pe faţa pământului.
17 Domnul i-a răspuns lui Moise:
– Voi face ceea ce ai cerut, căci ai parte de bunăvoinţă din partea Mea şi te cunosc pe nume.
18 – Te rog, arată-mi slava Ta, I-a zis Moise.
19 – Voi face să treacă prin faţa ta toată bunătatea Mea, i-a răspuns El, şi voi proclama înaintea ta Numele de „Domnul“. Eu mă îndur de cine vreau să mă îndur şi am milă de cine vreau să am milă. 20 Dar, a zis El, tu nu-Mi poţi vedea faţa, căci omul nu mai poate trăi odată ce M-a văzut. 21 Iată un loc lângă Mine unde să stai pe stâncă, a continuat Domnul. 22 Când va trece slava Mea, te vei aşeza într-o crăpătură a stâncii, iar Eu te voi acoperi cu mâna Mea, în timp ce voi trece. 23 Apoi Îmi voi lua mâna şi Mă vei vedea din spate. Faţa Mea însă nu poate fi văzută.

- Exodul 33:1 Termenul ebraic pentru sămânţă este un singular care se poate referi atât la un singur urmaş, cât şi la toţi urmaşii de pe linia genealogică a unei persoane (colectiv). Este foarte probabil ca în cele mai multe cazuri termenul să exprime o ambiguitate intenţionată. În traducerea de faţă a fost redat fie literal, fie cu urmaş sau urmaşi, în funcţie de contextul literal şi de cel teologic. 33 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath(A) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’(B) 2 I will send an angel(C) before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(D) 3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey.(E) But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked(F) people and I might destroy(G) you on the way.”
4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn(H) and no one put on any ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people.(I) If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy(J) you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.’” 6 So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.(K)
The Tent of Meeting
7 Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.”(L) Anyone inquiring(M) of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8 And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents,(N) watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud(O) would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke(P) with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent.(Q) 11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face,(R) as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua(S) son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the Glory of the Lord
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’(T) but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name(U) and you have found favor(V) with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways(W) so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”(X)
14 The Lord replied, “My Presence(Y) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”(Z)
15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence(AA) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?(AB) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”(AC)
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,(AD) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”(AE)
18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(AF)
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(AG) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(AH) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(AI) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(AJ) me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(AK) and cover you with my hand(AL) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
12 And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
