41 “(A)Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against Yahweh; we will indeed go up and fight, just as Yahweh our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42 (B)And Yahweh said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up and do not fight—for I am not among you—so that you are not [a]defeated before your enemies.”’ 43 So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead (C)you rebelled against the [b]command of Yahweh and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. 44 (D)And the Amorites who [c]lived in that hill country came out to meet you and pursued you (E)as bees do and crushed you from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before Yahweh; but (F)Yahweh did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you. 46 So you remained in (G)Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained there.

41 Then you responded to me and admitted, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will now go up and fight as the Lord our God has told us to do.” So you each put on your battle gear and prepared to go up to the hill country. 42 But the Lord told me: “Tell them this: ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you and you will be defeated by your enemies.’” 43 I spoke to you, but you did not listen. Instead you rebelled against the Lord[a] and recklessly went up to the hill country. 44 The Amorite inhabitants of that area[b] confronted[c] you and chased you like a swarm of bees, striking you down from Seir as far as Hormah.[d] 45 Then you came back and wept before the Lord, but he[e] paid no attention to you whatsoever.[f] 46 Therefore, you remained at Kadesh for a long time—indeed, for the full time.[g]

- Deuteronomy 1:44 sn Hormah is probably Khirbet el-Meshash, 5.5 mi (9 km) west of Arad and 7.5 mi (12 km) SE of Beer Sheba. Its name is a derivative of the verb חָרָם (kharam, “to ban; to exterminate”). See Num 21:3.
- Deuteronomy 1:45 tn Heb “the Lord.” The pronoun (“he”) has been employed in the translation here for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.
- Deuteronomy 1:45 tn Heb “did not hear your voice and did not turn an ear to you.”
- Deuteronomy 1:46 tn Heb “like the days which you lived.” This refers to the rest of the forty-year period in the desert before Israel arrived in Moab.
