The Death of Moses and the Commissioning of Joshua

34 Then Moses went up from the desert plateau[a] of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite[b] Jericho, and Yahweh showed him all of the land, Gilead all the way up to Dan, 2 and all of Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and all of the land of Judah, up to the western sea,[c] 3 and the Negev and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palms, on up to Zoar. 4 And Yahweh said to him, “This is the land that I swore to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob, saying,[d] ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross into it.”[e] 5 Then Moses, the servant of Yahweh, died there in the land of Moab according to the command of Yahweh.[f] 6 And he[g] buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor. But until this day no one knows his burial site. 7 Now Moses was a hundred and twenty years old[h] when he died;[i] his sight was not impaired and his vigor had not abated.[j] 8 And the Israelites[k] wept concerning Moses thirty days; finally the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were completed.

9 Now[l] Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had placed his hands on him, and the Israelites[m] listened to him, and they did as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 10 And not again[n] has a prophet arisen in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew[o] face to face, 11 as far as all the signs and the wonders Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt, against[p] Pharaoh and all of his servants and against[q] all of his land, 12 and as far as all of the mighty deeds[r] and as far as the great awesome wonders[s] Moses did before the eyes of all Israel.

Moses Ascends Pisgah

34 Moses ascended from the desert plain of Moab toward Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There[a] the Lord showed him the entire land, from Gilgal as far as Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territories[b] of Ephraim and Manasseh, and the entire territory[c] of Judah all the way to out over the sea,[d] 3 including the Negev,[e] the Arabah, the valley of Jericho, and the city of the palm trees as far as Zoar. 4 Then the Lord told him: “This is the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by an oath when I said, ‘I’ll give it to your descendants.’ I’ll let you see it with your eyes, but you won’t cross over there.”

Moses Dies

5 So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, just as the Lord had said.[f] 6 He was buried in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Moab, but no one knows to this day where his burial place is. 7 Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyesight wasn’t impaired and he was still vigorous and strong. 8 The Israelis mourned for Moses at the desert plain of Moab for 30 days, after which the period of mourning for Moses was completed.

The Epitaph for Moses

9 Now Nun’s son Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had placed his hands on him, so the Israelis listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 No prophet ever rose again in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew with such great intimacy.[g]

11 What signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do throughout the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all of his servants who lived in the whole land!

12 What great power[h] and great terror Moses displayed on behalf of all Israel!

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(A) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(B) across from Jericho.(C) There the Lord showed(D) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(E) 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(F) 3 the Negev(G) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(H) as far as Zoar.(I) 4 Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(J) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(K) when I said, ‘I will give it(L) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(M) over into it.”

5 And Moses the servant of the Lord(N) died(O) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. 6 He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(P) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(Q) 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(R) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(S) nor his strength gone.(T) 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(U) thirty days,(V) until the time of weeping and mourning(W) was over.

9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[b] of wisdom(X) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(Y) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(Z) has risen in Israel like Moses,(AA) whom the Lord knew face to face,(AB) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(AC) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(AD) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(AE) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(AF) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
