Moses' Death Foretold

48 That very day the Lord spoke to Moses, 49 “Go up (A)this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and view the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel for a possession. 50 And die on the mountain which you go up, and be gathered to your people, as (B)Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (C)because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel. 52 For (D)you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel.”

Moses' Final Blessing on Israel

33 This is the blessing with which Moses (E)the man of God blessed the people of Israel before his death. He said,

(F)“The Lord came from Sinai
    and dawned from Seir upon us;[a]
    he shone forth from Mount Paran;
he came (G)from the ten thousands of holy ones,
    with flaming fire[b] at his right hand.
Yes, (H)he loved his people,[c]
    (I)all his holy ones were in his[d] hand;
(J)so they followed[e] in your steps,
    receiving direction from you,
when (K)Moses commanded us a law,
    as a possession for the assembly of Jacob.
Thus the Lord[f] (L)became king in (M)Jeshurun,
    when the heads of the people were gathered,
    all the tribes of Israel together.

(N)“Let Reuben live, and not die,
    but let his men be few.”

And this he said of Judah:

“Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah,
    and bring him in to his people.
With your hands contend[g] for him,
    and be a help against his adversaries.”

And (O)of Levi he said,

“Give to Levi[h] (P)your Thummim,
    and your Urim to your godly one,
(Q)whom you tested at Massah,
    with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah;
who said of his father and mother,
    ‘I regard them not’;
(R)he disowned his brothers
    and ignored his children.
For (S)they observed your word
    and kept your covenant.
10 (T)They shall teach Jacob your rules
    and Israel your law;
(U)they shall put incense before you
    and (V)whole burnt offerings on your altar.
11 Bless, O Lord, his substance,
    and (W)accept the work of his hands;
crush the loins of his adversaries,
    of those who hate him, that they rise not again.”

12 (X)Of Benjamin he said,

“The beloved of the Lord dwells in safety.
The High God[i] surrounds him all day long,
    and dwells between his shoulders.”

13 And (Y)of Joseph he said,

(Z)“Blessed by the Lord be his land,
    with the choicest gifts of heaven (AA)above,[j]
    and of the deep that crouches beneath,
14 with the choicest fruits of the sun
    and the rich yield of the months,
15 with the finest produce of the ancient mountains
    and the abundance of (AB)the everlasting hills,
16 with the best gifts of the earth and (AC)its fullness
    and the favor of (AD)him who dwells in the bush.
May these rest on the head of Joseph,
    on the pate of him who is prince among his brothers.
17 (AE)A firstborn bull[k]—he has majesty,
    and his horns are the horns of a (AF)wild ox;
with them (AG)he shall gore the peoples,
    all of them, to the ends of the earth;
(AH)they are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
    and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 And of Zebulun he said,

(AI)“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
    and Issachar, in your tents.
19 They shall call peoples (AJ)to their mountain;
    there they offer (AK)right sacrifices;
for they draw from the abundance of the seas
    and the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20 And (AL)of Gad he said,

“Blessed be he who enlarges Gad!
    Gad crouches (AM)like a lion;
    he tears off arm and scalp.
21 (AN)He chose the best of the land for himself,
    for there a commander's portion was reserved;
and (AO)he came with the heads of the people,
    with Israel he executed the justice of the Lord,
    and his judgments for Israel.”

22 And (AP)of Dan he said,

(AQ)“Dan is a lion's cub
    (AR)that leaps from Bashan.”

23 And (AS)of Naphtali he said,

“O Naphtali, sated with favor,
    and full of the blessing of the Lord,
    (AT)possess the lake[l] and the south.”

24 And (AU)of Asher he said,

“Most blessed of sons be Asher;
    let him be the favorite of his brothers,
    and let him (AV)dip his foot in oil.
25 Your bars shall be iron and bronze,
    and as your days, so shall your strength be.

26 (AW)“There is none like God, O (AX)Jeshurun,
    (AY)who rides through the heavens to your help,
    through the skies in his majesty.
27 The eternal God is your (AZ)dwelling place,[m]
    and underneath are the everlasting arms.[n]
And he thrust out the enemy before you
    and said, ‘Destroy.’
28 So Israel lived in safety,
    (BA)Jacob lived (BB)alone,[o]
in a land of grain and wine,
    whose heavens drop down dew.
29 Happy are you, O Israel! (BC)Who is like you,
    a people (BD)saved by the Lord,
(BE)the shield of your help,
    and the sword of your triumph!
Your enemies shall come fawning to you,
    and you shall tread upon their backs.”

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab (BF)to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah (BG)as far as the western sea, (BH)the Negeb, and (BI)the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho (BJ)the city of palm trees, as far as (BK)Zoar. And the Lord said to him, (BL)“This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ (BM)I have let you see it with your eyes, but (BN)you shall not go over there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but (BO)no one knows the place of his burial to this day. (BP)Moses was 120 years old when he died. (BQ)His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel (BR)wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of (BS)the spirit of wisdom, for (BT)Moses had laid his hands on him. So (BU)the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 And there has not (BV)arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, (BW)whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 none like him for all (BX)the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 On that same day the Lord told Moses,(A) 49 “Go up into the Abarim(B) Range to Mount Nebo(C) in Moab, across from Jericho,(D) and view Canaan,(E) the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die(F) and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died(G) on Mount Hor(H) and was gathered to his people. 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh(I) in the Desert of Zin(J) and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.(K) 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance;(L) you will not enter(M) the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”

Moses Blesses the Tribes(N)

33 This is the blessing(O) that Moses the man of God(P) pronounced on the Israelites before his death. He said:

“The Lord came from Sinai(Q)
    and dawned over them from Seir;(R)
    he shone forth(S) from Mount Paran.(T)
He came with[a] myriads of holy ones(U)
    from the south, from his mountain slopes.[b]
Surely it is you who love(V) the people;
    all the holy ones are in your hand.(W)
At your feet they all bow down,(X)
    and from you receive instruction,
the law that Moses gave us,(Y)
    the possession of the assembly of Jacob.(Z)
He was king(AA) over Jeshurun[c](AB)
    when the leaders of the people assembled,
    along with the tribes of Israel.

“Let Reuben live and not die,
    nor[d] his people be few.”(AC)

And this he said about Judah:(AD)

“Hear, Lord, the cry of Judah;
    bring him to his people.
With his own hands he defends his cause.
    Oh, be his help against his foes!”

About Levi(AE) he said:

“Your Thummim and Urim(AF) belong
    to your faithful servant.(AG)
You tested(AH) him at Massah;
    you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.(AI)
He said of his father and mother,(AJ)
    ‘I have no regard for them.’
He did not recognize his brothers
    or acknowledge his own children,
but he watched over your word
    and guarded your covenant.(AK)
10 He teaches(AL) your precepts to Jacob
    and your law to Israel.(AM)
He offers incense before you(AN)
    and whole burnt offerings on your altar.(AO)
11 Bless all his skills, Lord,
    and be pleased with the work of his hands.(AP)
Strike down those who rise against him,
    his foes till they rise no more.”

“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him,(AR)
    for he shields him all day long,(AS)
    and the one the Lord loves(AT) rests between his shoulders.(AU)

13 About Joseph(AV) he said:

“May the Lord bless his land
    with the precious dew from heaven above
    and with the deep waters that lie below;(AW)
14 with the best the sun brings forth
    and the finest the moon can yield;
15 with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains(AX)
    and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills;
16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness
    and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush.(AY)
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
    on the brow of the prince among[e] his brothers.(AZ)
17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull;
    his horns(BA) are the horns of a wild ox.(BB)
With them he will gore(BC) the nations,
    even those at the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim;(BD)
    such are the thousands of Manasseh.(BE)

18 About Zebulun(BF) he said:

“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
    and you, Issachar,(BG) in your tents.

    Gad lives there like a lion,
    tearing at arm or head.
21 He chose the best land for himself;(BM)

    and let him bathe his feet in oil.(BS)
25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,(BT)
    and your strength will equal your days.(BU)

26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,(BV)
    who rides(BW) across the heavens to help you(BX)
    and on the clouds(BY) in his majesty.(BZ)
27 The eternal(CA) God is your refuge,(CB)
    and underneath are the everlasting(CC) arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,(CD)
    saying, ‘Destroy them!’(CE)
28 So Israel will live in safety;(CF)
    Jacob will dwell[f] secure
in a land of grain and new wine,
    where the heavens drop dew.(CG)
29 Blessed are you, Israel!(CH)
    Who is like you,(CI)
    a people saved by the Lord?(CJ)
He is your shield and helper(CK)
    and your glorious sword.
Your enemies will cower before you,

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(CM) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(CN) across from Jericho.(CO) There the Lord showed(CP) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(CQ) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(CR) the Negev(CS) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(CT) as far as Zoar.(CU) Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(CV) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(CW) when I said, ‘I will give it(CX) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(CY) over into it.”

And Moses the servant of the Lord(CZ) died(DA) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[g] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(DB) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(DC) Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(DD) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(DE) nor his strength gone.(DF) The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(DG) thirty days,(DH) until the time of weeping and mourning(DI) was over.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[h] of wisdom(DJ) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(DK) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(DL) has risen in Israel like Moses,(DM) whom the Lord knew face to face,(DN) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(DO) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(DP) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(DQ) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(DR) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
