12 (A)Then they believed His words;
They sang His praise.

13 (B)They soon forgot His works;
They did not wait for His counsel,
14 (C)But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
And tested God in the desert.
15 (D)And He gave them their request,
But (E)sent leanness into their soul.

16 When (F)they envied Moses in the camp,
And Aaron the saint of the Lord,
17 (G)The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan,
And covered the faction of Abiram.
18 (H)A fire was kindled in their company;
The flame burned up the wicked.

19 (I)They made a calf in Horeb,
And worshiped the molded image.
20 Thus (J)they changed their glory
Into the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They forgot God their Savior,
Who had done great things in Egypt,
22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
Awesome things by the Red Sea.
23 (K)Therefore He said that He would destroy them,
Had not Moses His chosen one (L)stood before Him in the breach,
To turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them.

24 Then they despised (M)the pleasant land;
They (N)did not believe His word,
25 (O)But complained in their tents,
And did not heed the voice of the Lord.
26 (P)Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them,
(Q)To [a]overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 (R)To [b]overthrow their descendants among the [c]nations,
And to scatter them in the lands.

28 (S)They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor,
And ate sacrifices [d]made to the dead.
29 Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds,
And the plague broke out among them.
30 (T)Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
And the plague was stopped.
31 And that was accounted to him (U)for righteousness
To all generations forevermore.

32 (V)They angered Him also at the waters of [e]strife,
(W)So that it went ill with Moses on account of them;
33 (X)Because they rebelled against His Spirit,
So that he spoke rashly with his lips.

34 (Y)They did not destroy the peoples,
(Z)Concerning whom the Lord had commanded them,
35 (AA)But they mingled with the Gentiles
And learned their works;
36 (AB)They served their idols,
(AC)Which became a snare to them.
37 (AD)They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to (AE)demons,
38 And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And (AF)the land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus they [f]were (AG)defiled by their own works,
And (AH)played[g] the harlot by their own deeds.

40 Therefore (AI)the wrath of the Lord was kindled against His people,
So that He abhorred (AJ)His own inheritance.
41 And (AK)He gave them into the hand of the Gentiles,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 (AL)Many times He delivered them;
But they rebelled in their counsel,
And were brought low for their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless He regarded their affliction,
When (AM)He heard their cry;
45 (AN)And for their sake He remembered His covenant,
And (AO)relented (AP)according to the multitude of His mercies.
46 (AQ)He also made them to be pitied
By all those who carried them away captive.

47 (AR)Save us, O Lord our God,
And gather us from among the Gentiles,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
To triumph in Your praise.

48 (AS)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
From everlasting to everlasting!
And let all the people say, “Amen!”

[h]Praise the Lord!

12 Then they believed his promises
    and sang his praise.(A)

13 But they soon forgot(B) what he had done
    and did not wait for his plan to unfold.(C)
14 In the desert(D) they gave in to their craving;
    in the wilderness(E) they put God to the test.(F)
15 So he gave them(G) what they asked for,
    but sent a wasting disease(H) among them.

16 In the camp they grew envious(I) of Moses
    and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.
17 The earth opened(J) up and swallowed Dathan;(K)
    it buried the company of Abiram.(L)
18 Fire blazed(M) among their followers;
    a flame consumed the wicked.
19 At Horeb they made a calf(N)
    and worshiped an idol cast from metal.
20 They exchanged their glorious God(O)
    for an image of a bull, which eats grass.
21 They forgot the God(P) who saved them,
    who had done great things(Q) in Egypt,
22 miracles in the land of Ham(R)
    and awesome deeds(S) by the Red Sea.
23 So he said he would destroy(T) them—
    had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach(U) before him
    to keep his wrath from destroying them.

24 Then they despised(V) the pleasant land;(W)
    they did not believe(X) his promise.
25 They grumbled(Y) in their tents
    and did not obey the Lord.
26 So he swore(Z) to them with uplifted hand
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,(AA)
27 make their descendants fall among the nations
    and scatter(AB) them throughout the lands.

28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor(AC)
    and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29 they aroused the Lord’s anger(AD) by their wicked deeds,(AE)
    and a plague(AF) broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas(AG) stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was checked.(AH)
31 This was credited to him(AI) as righteousness
    for endless generations(AJ) to come.
32 By the waters of Meribah(AK) they angered the Lord,
    and trouble came to Moses because of them;
33 for they rebelled(AL) against the Spirit(AM) of God,
    and rash words came from Moses’ lips.[a](AN)

34 They did not destroy(AO) the peoples
    as the Lord had commanded(AP) them,
35 but they mingled(AQ) with the nations
    and adopted their customs.
36 They worshiped their idols,(AR)
    which became a snare(AS) to them.
37 They sacrificed their sons(AT)
    and their daughters to false gods.(AU)
38 They shed innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons(AV) and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was desecrated by their blood.
39 They defiled themselves(AW) by what they did;
    by their deeds they prostituted(AX) themselves.

40 Therefore the Lord was angry(AY) with his people
    and abhorred his inheritance.(AZ)
41 He gave them into the hands(BA) of the nations,
    and their foes ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed(BB) them
    and subjected them to their power.
43 Many times he delivered them,(BC)
    but they were bent on rebellion(BD)
    and they wasted away in their sin.
44 Yet he took note of their distress
    when he heard their cry;(BE)
45 for their sake he remembered his covenant(BF)
    and out of his great love(BG) he relented.(BH)
46 He caused all who held them captive
    to show them mercy.(BI)

47 Save us,(BJ) Lord our God,
    and gather us(BK) from the nations,
that we may give thanks(BL) to your holy name(BM)
    and glory in your praise.

48 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.

Let all the people say, “Amen!”(BN)

Praise the Lord.

39 (A)He spread a cloud for a covering,
And fire to give light in the night.
40 (B)The people asked, and He brought quail,
And (C)satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
41 (D)He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
It ran in the dry places like a river.

40 They asked,(C) and he brought them quail;(D)

41 He opened the rock,(F) and water gushed out;
    it flowed like a river in the desert.

14 (A)In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.
15 (B)He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
16 He also brought (C)streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 But they sinned even more against Him
By (D)rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.
18 And (E)they tested God in their heart
By asking for the food of their fancy.
19 (F)Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 (G)Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?”

21 Therefore the Lord heard this and (H)was furious;
So a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also came up against Israel,
22 Because they (I)did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
(J)And opened the doors of heaven,
24 (K)Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the [a]bread of (L)heaven.
25 Men ate angels’ food;
He sent them food to [b]the full.

26 (M)He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;
And by His power He brought in the south wind.
27 He also rained meat on them like the dust,
Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;
28 And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 (N)So they ate and were well filled,
For He gave them their own desire.
30 They were not [c]deprived of their craving;
But (O)while their food was still in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.

32 In spite of this (P)they still sinned,
And (Q)did not believe in His wondrous works.
33 (R)Therefore their days He consumed in futility,
And their years in fear.

34 (S)When He slew them, then they sought Him;
And they returned and sought earnestly for God.
35 Then they remembered that (T)God was their rock,
And the Most High God (U)their Redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they (V)flattered Him with their mouth,
And they lied to Him with their tongue;
37 For their heart was not steadfast with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
38 (W)But He, being full of (X)compassion, forgave their iniquity,
And did not destroy them.
Yes, many a time (Y)He turned His anger away,
And (Z)did not stir up all His wrath;
39 For (AA)He remembered (AB)that they were but flesh,
(AC)A breath that passes away and does not come again.

40 How often they (AD)provoked[d] Him in the wilderness,
And grieved Him in the desert!
41 Yes, (AE)again and again they tempted God,
And limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember His [e]power:
The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,
43 When He worked His signs in Egypt,
And His wonders in the field of Zoan;
44 (AF)Turned their rivers into blood,
And their streams, that they could not drink.
45 (AG)He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them,
And (AH)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He also gave their crops to the caterpillar,
And their labor to the (AI)locust.
47 (AJ)He destroyed their vines with hail,
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He also gave up their (AK)cattle to the hail,
And their flocks to fiery [f]lightning.
49 He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,
Wrath, indignation, and trouble,
By sending angels of destruction among them.
50 He made a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave [g]their life over to the plague,
51 And destroyed all the (AL)firstborn in Egypt,
The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 But He (AM)made His own people go forth like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
53 And He (AN)led them on safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea (AO)overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And He brought them to His (AP)holy border,
This mountain (AQ)which His right hand had acquired.
55 (AR)He also drove out the nations before them,
(AS)Allotted them an inheritance by [h]survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

56 (AT)Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But (AU)turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside (AV)like a deceitful bow.
58 (AW)For they provoked Him to anger with their (AX)high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
59 When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
60 (AY)So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,
61 (AZ)And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 (BA)He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men,
And (BB)their maidens were not given in marriage.
64 (BC)Their priests fell by the sword,
And (BD)their widows made no lamentation.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
(BE)Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.
66 And (BF)He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion (BG)which He loved.
69 And He built His (BH)sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 (BI)He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From following (BJ)the ewes that had young He brought him,
(BK)To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (BL)integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

14 He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.(A)
15 He split the rocks(B) in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin(C) against him,
    rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(D)
    by demanding the food they craved.(E)
19 They spoke against God;(F)
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,(G)
    streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat(H) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
    his fire broke out(I) against Jacob,
    and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
    or trust(J) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;(K)
24 he rained down manna(L) for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(M) from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds(N) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(O)
    he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
    even while the food was still in their mouths,(P)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
    he put to death the sturdiest(Q) among them,
    cutting down the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(R)
    in spite of his wonders,(S) they did not believe.(T)
33 So he ended their days in futility(U)
    and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(V) him;
    they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(W)
    that God Most High was their Redeemer.(X)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(Y)
    lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(Z) to him,
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AA)
    he forgave(AB) their iniquities(AC)
    and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(AD)
    and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(AE)
    a passing breeze(AF) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(AG) against him in the wilderness(AH)
    and grieved him(AI) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(AJ)
    they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(AK)
42 They did not remember(AL) his power—
    the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(AM)
43 the day he displayed his signs(AN) in Egypt,
    his wonders(AO) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(AP)
    they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(AQ) that devoured them,
    and frogs(AR) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(AS)
    their produce to the locust.(AT)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(AU)
    and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
    their livestock(AV) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(AW)
    his wrath, indignation and hostility—
    a band of destroying angels.(AX)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death
    but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(AY)
    the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(AZ)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BA)
    he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
    but the sea engulfed(BB) their enemies.(BC)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
    to the hill country his right hand(BD) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(BE) before them
    and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(BF)
    he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

56 But they put God to the test
    and rebelled against the Most High;
    they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(BG) they were disloyal and faithless,
    as unreliable as a faulty bow.(BH)
58 They angered him(BI) with their high places;(BJ)
    they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(BK)
59 When God heard(BL) them, he was furious;(BM)
    he rejected Israel(BN) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(BO)
    the tent he had set up among humans.(BP)
61 He sent the ark of his might(BQ) into captivity,(BR)
    his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(BS)
    he was furious with his inheritance.(BT)
63 Fire consumed(BU) their young men,
    and their young women had no wedding songs;(BV)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(BW)
    and their widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(BX)
    as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
    he put them to everlasting shame.(BY)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(BZ)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(CA)
    Mount Zion,(CB) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(CC) like the heights,
    like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(CD) his servant
    and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(CE) he brought him
    to be the shepherd(CF) of his people Jacob,
    of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(CG)
    with skillful hands he led them.
