Paul is accused before Felix. He answers for himself.

24 After five days, Ananias, the high priest, descended with elders and with a certain orator named Tertullus, and made representations to the governor concerning Paul. When Paul was called forth, Tertullus began the case against him, saying,

Seeing that we live in great quietness owing to you, and that many good things are done for this nation through your prudent government, we receive and acknowledge it ever and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thanks. But in order that I not be tedious to you, I pray that you would kindly hear a few words from us.

We have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of conflict among all the Jews throughout the world, and a maintainer of the sect of the Nazarites, who has also taken in hand to profane the temple. We took him, and would have judged him according to our law, but the high captain Lysias came upon us, and with great force took him away out of our hands, commanding his accusers to come to you. You may, if you wish to enquire, ascertain from him the facts concerning all these things of which we accuse him.

The Jews maintained likewise, saying that it was even so.

10 Then Paul (after the governor himself had indicated to him that he should speak) answered, I shall with a more quiet mind answer for myself, 11 since I understand that for many years you have been a judge to this people, in order that you may know that it is yet only twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to pray, 12 and they neither found me in the temple disputing with anyone, nor inciting the people, neither in the synagogues nor in the city. 13 Nor can they prove the things they accuse me of.

14 But this I confess to you: that in accordance with the Way, which they call heresy, so do I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things that are written in the law and the prophets. 15 And I have hope in God that the same resurrection of the dead that they themselves look for also will come, both of the just and the unjust. 16 And therefore I strive to have a clear conscience toward God, and toward man also.

17 But after many years I came, bringing alms and offerings to my people, 18 in the course of which they found me purified in the temple, neither with a lot of people, nor making a disturbance. However, there were certain Jews out of Asia, 19 who ought to be here present before you and accuse me if they have anything against me. 20 Or else let these men here say if they have found any wrongdoing in me, while I stand here in the council – 21 unless it be for this one statement that I made standing among them: It is concerning the resurrection from death that I am on trial before you this day.

22 When Felix heard these things, he adjourned the hearing – for he knew very well of that Way – and said, When Lysias the captain arrives, I will hear the last of your matters. 23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and that he should have rest, and not to forbid any of his friends to minister to him or come to him.

24 And after some time, Felix and his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, came and called for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith that is toward Christ. 25 And as he preached of righteousness, temperance, and the judgment to come, Felix trembled and answered, That is enough at this time; depart. When I have a convenient time, I will send for you. 26 He hoped also that Paul would give him money to set him free, so he called for him often and conversed with him.

27 But after two years, Festus Porcius succeeded Felix. And Felix, wanting to please the Jews, left Paul bound in prison.

Defensa de Pablo ante Félix

oh excelentísimo Félix, lo reconocemos en todo tiempo y en todo lugar con toda gratitud.

Pero por no molestarte más largamente, te ruego que nos oigas brevemente conforme a tu equidad.

Porque hemos hallado que este hombre es una plaga, y promotor de sediciones entre todos los judíos por todo el mundo, y cabecilla de la secta de los nazarenos.

Intentó también profanar el templo; y después de prenderle, quisimos juzgarle conforme a nuestra ley.

Pero se presentó el tribuno Lisias, y con gran violencia le quitó de nuestras manos,

mandando a sus acusadores que viniesen a ti. Tú mismo, pues, si le interrogas, podrás informarte de todas estas cosas de que le acusamos.

10 Habiéndole hecho señal el gobernador a Pablo para que hablase, éste respondió: Porque bien sé que desde hace muchos años eres juez de esta nación, haré mi defensa con buen ánimo.

11 Como tú puedes cerciorarte, no hace más de doce días que subí a Jerusalén a adorar;

12 y ni en el templo, ni en las sinagogas, ni en la ciudad me hallaron disputando con ninguno, ni amotinando a la multitud;

13 ni te pueden probar las cosas de que ahora me acusan.

14 Pero esto te confieso, que según el Camino que ellos llaman secta, así doy culto al Dios de mis padres creyendo todas las cosas que están escritas en la ley y en los profetas;

15 teniendo esperanza en Dios, la cual ellos mismos también abrigan, de que ha de haber resurrección de los muertos, tanto de justos como de injustos.

16 Y por esto, yo mismo me ejercito constantemente en conservar una conciencia irreprensible ante Dios y ante los hombres.

17 Pero pasados algunos años, vine a hacer limosnas a mi nación y a presentar ofrendas.

18 Estaba haciendo esto, cuando unos judíos de Asia me hallaron purificado en el templo, no con multitud ni con alboroto.

19 Ellos deberían comparecer ante ti y acusarme, si tienen algo contra mí.

20 O que digan estos mismos si hallaron en mí algún delito, cuando comparecí ante el sanedrín,

24 Algunos días después, viniendo Félix con Drusila su mujer, que era judía, llamó a Pablo, y le oyó acerca de la fe en Jesucristo.

25 Pero al disertar Pablo acerca de la justicia, del dominio propio y del juicio venidero, Félix se aterrorizó, y dijo: Vete por ahora; pero cuando tenga oportunidad te llamaré.

26 Esperaba también junto con esto, que Pablo le diera dinero para que le soltase; por lo cual le hacía llamar con frecuencia para conversar con él.

27 Pero al cabo de dos años recibió Félix por sucesor a Porcio Festo; y queriendo Félix congraciarse con los judíos, dejó preso a Pablo.

Paul’s Trial Before Felix

24 Five days later the high priest Ananias(A) went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges(B) against Paul before the governor.(C) When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: “We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. Everywhere and in every way, most excellent(D) Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.

“We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots(E) among the Jews(F) all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene(G) sect(H) and even tried to desecrate the temple;(I) so we seized him. [7] [a] By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him.”

The other Jews joined in the accusation,(J) asserting that these things were true.

10 When the governor(K) motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: “I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense. 11 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days(L) ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12 My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple,(M) or stirring up a crowd(N) in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. 13 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.(O) 14 However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors(P) as a follower of the Way,(Q) which they call a sect.(R) I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,(S) 15 and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection(T) of both the righteous and the wicked.(U) 16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear(V) before God and man.

17 “After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor(W) and to present offerings. 18 I was ceremonially clean(X) when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance.(Y) 19 But there are some Jews from the province of Asia,(Z) who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me.(AA) 20 Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin— 21 unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: ‘It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”(AB)

22 Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way,(AC) adjourned the proceedings. “When Lysias the commander comes,” he said, “I will decide your case.” 23 He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard(AD) but to give him some freedom(AE) and permit his friends to take care of his needs.(AF)

24 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.(AG) 25 As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control(AH) and the judgment(AI) to come, Felix was afraid(AJ) and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” 26 At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.

27 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus,(AK) but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews,(AL) he left Paul in prison.(AM)

Paul Before Felix at Caesarea Maritima

And when[a] he had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him,[b] saying, “We have experienced[c] much[d] peace through you, and reforms are taking place in this nation through your foresight. Both in every way and everywhere we acknowledge this,[e] most excellent Felix, with all gratitude. But so that I may not impose on you for longer, I implore you to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness. For we have found[f] this man to be a public menace and one who causes riots among all the Jews throughout the Roman Empire[g] and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes, who even attempted to desecrate the temple, and we arrested him[h].[i] When[j] you yourself examine him[k] you will be able to find out from him[l] about all these things of which we are accusing him.” And the Jews also joined in the attack, asserting these things were so.

10 And when[m] the governor gestured for him to speak, Paul replied, “Because I[n] know you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I defend myself cheerfully with respect to the things concerning myself. 11 You can ascertain that it has not been more than[o] twelve days since[p] I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12 And neither did they find me arguing with anyone or making a crowd develop in the temple courts[q] nor in the synagogues nor throughout the city. 13 Nor can they prove the things[r] to you concerning which they are now accusing me. 14 But I do confess this to you, that according to the Way (which they call a sect), so I worship the God of our fathers, believing all things that are in accordance with the law and that are written in the prophets, 15 having a hope in God which these men also themselves await: that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. 16 For this reason[s] also I myself always[t] do my best to have a clear conscience toward God and people. 17 So after many years, I came to practice charitable giving and offerings to my people,[u] 18 in which they found me purified in the temple courts,[v] not with a crowd or with a disturbance. 19 But there are some Jews from Asia[w] who ought to be present before you and bring charges against me,[x] if they have anything against me, 20 or these men themselves should say what crime they found when[y] I stood before the Sanhedrin,[z] 21 other than concerning this one declaration that I shouted while[aa] standing there before them: ‘I am being judged before you today concerning the resurrection of the dead!’”

Paul Held Awaiting Trial

22 But Felix, because he[ab] understood the facts concerning the Way more accurately, put them off, saying, “When Lysias the military tribune comes down, I will decide your case.”[ac] 23 He ordered[ad] the centurion for him to be guarded and to have some freedom, and in no way to prevent any of his own people[ae] from serving him.

24 And after some days, when[af] Felix arrived with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and listened to him concerning faith in Christ Jesus. 25 And while[ag] he was discussing about righteousness and self control and the judgment that is to come, Felix became afraid and[ah] replied, “Go away for the present, and when I[ai] have an opportunity, I will summon you.” 26 At the same time he was also hoping that money would be given to him by Paul. For this reason also he sent for him as often as possible and[aj] talked with him. 27 And when[ak] two years had passed, Felix received as successor Porcius Festus. And because he[al] wanted to do a favor for the Jews, Felix left Paul behind as a prisoner.[am]
