¹⁴ One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, ^(A)who was a worshiper of God. The Lord ^(B)opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.

¹⁷ that ^(A)the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, ^(B)may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, ^18 (C)having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is ^(D)the hope to which he has called you, what are ^(E)the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

⁴⁵ Then ^(A)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

⁴⁴ No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me ^(A)draws him. And ^(B)I will raise him up on the last day. ⁴⁵ It is written in the Prophets, ^(C)‘And they will all be ^(D)taught by God.’ ^(E)Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—

²⁰ Behold, I stand at the door and ^(A)knock. ^(B)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, ^(C)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

¹⁴ But ^(A)their minds were ^(B)hardened. For to this day, ^(C)when they read ^(D)the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. ¹⁵ Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. ¹⁶ But when ^(E)one^[a] turns to the Lord, ^(F)the veil is removed.

⁴ In their case ^(A)the god of this world ^(B)has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing ^(C)the light of ^(D)the gospel of the glory of Christ, ^(E)who is the image of God. ⁵ For what ^(F)we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ^(G)ourselves as your servants^[a] for Jesus' sake. ⁶ For God, who said, ^(H)“Let light shine out of darkness,” ^(I)has shone in our hearts to give ^(J)the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

¹⁶ So then it depends not on human will or exertion,^[a] but on God, who has mercy.
