The Arrest of Stephen
8 Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and others of those from Cilicia and Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit[a] with which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly instigated some men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 They stirred up the people as well as the elders and the scribes; then they suddenly confronted him, seized him, and brought him before the council. 13 They set up false witnesses who said, “This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth[b] will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses handed on to us.” 15 And all who sat in the council looked intently at him, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
Stephen’s Speech to the Council
7 Then the high priest asked him, “Are these things so?” 2 And Stephen replied:
“Brothers[c] and fathers, listen to me. The God of glory appeared to our ancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Leave your country and your relatives and go to the land that I will show you.’ 4 Then he left the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God had him move from there to this country in which you are now living. 5 He did not give him any of it as a heritage, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as his possession and to his descendants after him, even though he had no child.

15 E tutti quelli che sedevano nel sinedrio, fissati gli occhi su di lui, videro il suo viso simile a quello di un angelo.

7 (B)Il sommo sacerdote disse: «Le cose stanno proprio così?»
2 Egli rispose: «Fratelli e padri[c], ascoltate. Il Dio della gloria apparve ad Abraamo, nostro padre, mentre egli era in Mesopotamia, prima che si stabilisse in Caran, 3 e gli disse: “Esci dal tuo paese e dal tuo parentado, e va’ nel paese che io ti mostrerò”[d]. 4 Allora egli lasciò il paese dei Caldei e andò ad abitare in Caran; e di là, dopo che suo padre morì, Dio lo fece venire in questo paese che ora voi abitate. 5 In esso però non gli diede in proprietà neppure un palmo di terra[e], ma gli promise di darla in possesso a lui e alla sua discendenza dopo di lui, quando egli non aveva ancora nessun figlio.

8 Etienne était rempli de la grâce et de la puissance divines et accomplissait de grands prodiges et des signes miraculeux au milieu du peuple. 9 Alors des membres de la synagogue dite des Affranchis[a], composée de Juifs de Cyrène, d’Alexandrie, de Cilicie et de la province d’Asie, se mirent à discuter avec lui, 10 mais ils se montraient incapables de résister à la sagesse de ses paroles, que lui donnait l’Esprit.
11 Là-dessus, ils payèrent des gens pour dire : Nous l’avons entendu prononcer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu.
12 Ils ameutèrent ainsi le peuple, les responsables du peuple et les spécialistes de la Loi. Survenant à l’improviste, ils s’emparèrent d’Etienne et l’amenèrent au Grand-Conseil. 13 Là, ils firent comparaître de faux témoins qui déposèrent contre lui :
Cet homme que voici, dirent-ils, ne cesse de discourir contre ce lieu saint et contre la Loi de Moïse. 14 En effet, nous l’avons entendu dire que ce Jésus de Nazareth détruirait ce lieu et changerait les coutumes que Moïse nous a transmises.
15 Tous ceux qui siégeaient au Grand-Conseil avaient les yeux fixés sur Etienne et son visage leur apparut comme celui d’un ange.
7 Le grand-prêtre lui demanda : Reconnais-tu les faits qui te sont reprochés ?
2 Etienne dit alors :
Chers frères et pères de notre peuple, écoutez-moi : le Dieu glorieux apparut jadis à notre ancêtre Abraham, quand il vivait encore en Mésopotamie, avant de s’établir à Harân, 3 et il lui dit : Quitte ton pays et ta parenté, et va dans le pays que je t’indiquerai[b]. 4 C’est ainsi qu’Abraham quitta la Chaldée et vint se fixer à Harân. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit venir dans le pays où vous habitez actuellement. 5 Pourtant, il ne lui donna ici aucune propriété, pas même un mètre carré de terre. Mais il lui promit de lui donner le pays tout entier, à lui et à ses descendants après lui, alors qu’à cette époque il n’avait pas encore d’enfant[c].

47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands;[a] as the prophet says,
49 ‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. 53 You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it.”
The Stoning of Stephen
54 When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen.[b] 55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.[c]

51 (A)«Gente di collo duro e incirconcisa di cuore e d’orecchi, voi opponete sempre resistenza allo Spirito Santo; come fecero i vostri padri, così fate anche voi. 52 Quale dei profeti non perseguitarono i vostri padri? Essi uccisero quelli che preannunciavano la venuta del Giusto, del quale voi ora siete divenuti i traditori e gli uccisori; 53 voi, che avete ricevuto la legge promulgata dagli angeli e non l’avete osservata».

54 Essi, udendo queste cose, fremevano di rabbia in cuor loro e digrignavano i denti contro di lui. 55 Ma Stefano, pieno di Spirito Santo, fissati gli occhi al cielo, vide la gloria di Dio e Gesù che stava alla destra di Dio, 56 e disse: «Ecco, io vedo i cieli aperti e il Figlio dell’uomo in piedi alla destra di Dio». 57 Ma essi, gettando grida altissime, si turarono gli orecchi e si avventarono tutti insieme sopra di lui; 58 e, cacciatolo fuori dalla città, cominciarono a lapidarlo. 49 Mon trône, c’est le ciel,
et mon marchepied, c’est la terre.
Quelle est donc la maison |que vous me bâtirez, |dit le Seigneur,
quelle demeure |pour mon lieu de repos ?
50 Toutes ces choses, |n’est-ce pas moi qui les ai faites[a] ?
51 O vous hommes obstinés qui, comme de véritables incirconcis, gardez votre cœur et vos oreilles fermés, vous résistez toujours à l’Esprit Saint ! 52 Vous ressemblez bien à vos ancêtres ! Y a-t-il un seul prophète que vos ancêtres n’aient pas persécuté ? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient la venue du seul Juste. Et vous, maintenant, vous l’avez trahi et assassiné ! 53 Oui, vous avez bien reçu la Loi de Dieu par l’intermédiaire des anges, mais vous ne l’avez jamais observée …
L’exécution d’Etienne
54 A ces mots, ceux qui siégeaient au Grand-Conseil devinrent fous de rage : ils grinçaient des dents contre Etienne. 55 Mais lui, rempli du Saint-Esprit, leva les yeux au ciel et vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu. Alors, il s’écria : 56 Ecoutez : je vois le ciel ouvert et le Fils de l’homme debout à la droite de Dieu.
57 A ces mots, ils se mirent à vociférer et à se boucher les oreilles. D’un même élan, ils se ruèrent sur lui, 58 le traînèrent hors de la ville et le lapidèrent. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59 Pendant qu’ils jetaient des pierres sur lui, Etienne priait ainsi : Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit !
60 Puis il tomba à genoux et, de toutes ses forces, lança un dernier cri : Seigneur, ne leur demande pas compte de ce péché !
Après avoir dit ces mots, il expira.

46 Then he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a royal official whose son lay ill in Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you[a] see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my little boy dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started on his way. 51 As he was going down, his slaves met him and told him that his child was alive. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to recover, and they said to him, “Yesterday at one in the afternoon the fever left him.” 53 The father realized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole household. 54 Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

46 Azután ismét a galileai Kánába ment, ahol a vizet borrá változtatta. Kapernaumban pedig volt egy királyi tisztviselő, akinek betegen feküdt a fia.
47 Amikor meghallotta, hogy Jézus megérkezett Júdeából Galileába, elment hozzá, és kérte, hogy jöjjön és gyógyítsa meg a fiát, mert halálán van.
48 Erre Jézus ezt mondta neki: "Ha nem láttok jeleket és csodákat, nem hisztek."
49 A királyi tisztviselő újra kérte őt: "Uram, jöjj, mielőtt meghal a gyermekem."
50 Jézus erre így válaszolt: "Menj el, a te fiad él." Hitt az ember a szónak, amelyet Jézus mondott neki, és elindult.
51 Még útban volt hazafelé, amikor szembejöttek vele a szolgái a hírrel, hogy a gyermeke él.
52 Ekkor megkérdezte tőlük, hány órakor lett jobban. Azt mondták neki, hogy tegnap délután egy órakor hagyta el a láz.

Or, à Capernaüm vivait un haut fonctionnaire[a] dont le fils était très malade. 47 Quand il apprit que Jésus était revenu de Judée en Galilée, il alla le trouver et le supplia de venir guérir son fils qui était sur le point de mourir.
48 Jésus lui dit : A moins de voir des signes miraculeux et des choses extraordinaires, vous ne croirez donc pas ?
49 Mais le fonctionnaire insistait : Seigneur, viens vite avant que mon petit garçon meure.
50 – Va, lui dit Jésus, rentre chez toi, ton fils vit.
Cet homme crut Jésus sur parole et il repartit chez lui.
51 Sur le chemin du retour, plusieurs de ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre et lui annoncèrent : Ton fils vit !
52 Il leur demanda à quelle heure son état s’était amélioré.
Ils lui répondirent : C’est hier, vers une heure de l’après-midi, que la fièvre l’a quitté.
53 Le père constata que c’était l’heure même où Jésus lui avait dit : « Ton fils vit. » Dès lors il crut, lui et toute sa maison.
54 Tel est le deuxième signe miraculeux que Jésus accomplit en Galilée, après son retour de Judée.
