11 А Готолия Охозиевата майка, като видя, че синът й умря, стана та погуби целия царски род.

²Но Иосавеета, дъщеря на цар Иорама, сестра на Охозия, взе Иоаса, Охозиевия син, та го открадна изсред царските синове, като ги убиваха; и скриха го от Готолия в спалнята, заедно с дойката му, та не биде убит.

³И беше при нея, скрит в Господния дом, шест години; а Готолия царуваше над земята.

⁴Но в седмата година Иодай прати и, като взе стотниците на палачите и на телохранителите, доведе ги при саба си в Господния дом; после, като направи договор с тях и ги закле в Господния дом, показа им царския син.

⁵И заповяда им казвайки: Ито какво трябва да направите: една трета от вас, които постъпвате на служба в събота, нека пази стража при царската къща,

⁶една трета при портата Сур и една трета при портата, който е зад телохранителите; така да пазите стража при къщата, за да не влезе никой.

⁷И всички от вас, и от двата отдела, които оставяте службата в събота, нека пазят стража при Господния дом около царя.

⁸И да окръжавате царя от всука страна, като всеки държи оръжията си в ръка; а който би влязъл в редовете да бъде убит; и да бъдете с царя при излизането му и при влизането му.

⁹И тъй, стотниците извършиха всичко според както заповяда свещеник Иодай, и взеха всеки мъжете си - ония, които щяха да постъпят на служба в събота, и ония, които щаха да оставят службата в събота - та дойдоха при свещеника Иодай.

¹⁰И свещеникът даде на стотниците цар Даводовите копия и щитове, които бяха в Господния дом.

¹¹И телохранителите, всеки с оръжията си в ръка, стояха около церя, от дясната страна на дома до лявата му страна, край олтара и край дома.

¹²Тогава Иодай изведе царския син та положи на него короната и му връчи божественото заявление; и направиха го цар и помазаха го; после изплескаха с ръце и казаха: Да живее церят!

¹³А Готолия, като чу вика от телохранителите и от людете, дойде при людете в Господния дом,

¹⁴и погледна, и, ето, царят стоеше при стълба, според обичая, и военачалниците и тръбите при царя и всичките лйде от страна се радваха и свиреха с тръбите. Тогава Готолия раздра дрехите си и извика: Заговор! заговор!

¹⁵И свещеник Иодай заповяда на стотниците, поставени над силите, та им рече: Изведете я вън от редавете, и който би я последвал, убийте го с меч; защото свещеникът беше казал: Да не бъде убита в Господния дом.

¹⁶И така отстъпиха й място; и тя отиде през пътя на конския вход в царската къща; и там биде убита.

¹⁷Тогава Иодай направи завет между Господа и царя и людете, че ще бъдат Господни люде - също и между царя и людете.

¹⁸И всичките люде от земята влязоха във Вааловото капища та го събориха, жертвениците му и кумирити му изпотрошиха съвсем, и Вааловия жрец Матан убиха пред жертвениците. И свещеникът постави надзиратели над Господния дом.

¹⁹Тогава, като взе стотниците, палачите, телохранителите и всичките люде от страната, изведоха царя от Господния дом; и дойдоха в църската къща през пътя към портата на телохранителите, и той седна на царския престол.

²⁰Така всичките люде от страната се зарадваха, и градът се успокои; а Готолия убиха с меч при царската къща.

²¹Иоас беше на седем години, когато се възцари.

⁴^(D)На седмата година Иодай прати и взе стотниците от телохранителите и бързоходците, доведе ги при себе си в дома Господен, сключи с тях договор, взе от тях клетва в дома Господен и им показа царския син;

⁵и даде им заповед, като каза: ето какво ще направите: едната третина от вас, които дохождате в събота, ще стоите на стража при царския дом;

⁶^(E)другата третина – при Сурски порти; и третата третина – при портите зад телохранителите, и ще стоите на стража в дома, да не стане насилие.

⁷^(F)И две части от вас, от всички, които си отиват в събота, ще стоят на стража при дома Господен, за царя;

⁸и заобиколете царя от всички страни, всеки с оръжието си в ръка; който и да влезе в редовете, да бъде убит; и бъдете при царя, кога излиза и кога влиза.

⁹Стотниците направиха всичко, що заповяда свещеник Иодай; всеки взе людете си, които дохождаха в събота и които си отиваха в събота, и дойдоха при свещеник Иодая.

¹⁰^(G)И свещеникът раздаде на стотниците копията и щитовете цар Давидови, които се намираха в дома Господен.

²⁰^(P)Целият народ на страната се весели, и градът се успокои. А Готолия убиха с меч в царския дом.

Athaliah and Joash^(A)

11 When Athaliah^(B) the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family. ²But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram^[a] and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash^(C) son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.^(D) ³He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

⁴In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites^(E) and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son. ⁵He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath^(F)—a third of you guarding the royal palace,^(G) ⁶a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple— ⁷and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king. ⁸Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks^[b] is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”

⁹The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest. ¹⁰Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields^(H) that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord. ¹¹The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.

¹²Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant^(I) and proclaimed him king. They anointed^(J) him, and the people clapped their hands^(K) and shouted, “Long live the king!”^(L)

¹³When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guards and the people, she went to the people at the temple of the Lord. ¹⁴She looked and there was the king, standing by the pillar,^(M) as the custom was. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets.^(N) Then Athaliah tore^(O) her robes and called out, “Treason! Treason!”^(P)

¹⁵Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: “Bring her out between the ranks^[c] and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the temple^(Q) of the Lord.” ¹⁶So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter^(R) the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.^(S)

¹⁷Jehoiada then made a covenant^(T) between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.^(U) ¹⁸All the people of the land went to the temple^(V) of Baal and tore it down. They smashed^(W) the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest^(X) of Baal in front of the altars.

Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the Lord. ¹⁹He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites,^(Y) the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the Lord and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne. ²⁰All the people of the land rejoiced,^(Z) and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.

²¹Joash^[d] was seven years old when he began to reign.^[e]

Athaliah Reigns in Judah^(A)

11 When ^(B)Athaliah ^(C)the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was ^(D)dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs. ²But ^[a]Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of ^(E)Ahaziah, took ^[b]Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered; and they hid him and his nurse in the bedroom, from Athaliah, so that he was not killed. ³So he was hidden with her in the house of the Lord for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Joash Crowned King of Judah^(F)

⁴In ^(G)the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of hundreds—of the bodyguards and the ^[c]escorts—and brought them into the house of the Lord to him. And he made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the Lord, and showed them the king’s son. ⁵Then he commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall do: One-third of you who ^[d]come on duty ^(H)on the Sabbath shall be keeping watch over the king’s house, ⁶one-third shall be at the gate of Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the escorts. You shall keep the watch of the house, lest it be broken down. ⁷The two ^[e]contingents of you who go off duty on the Sabbath shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord for the king. ⁸But you shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within range, let him be put to death. You are to be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in.”

⁹^(I)So the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each of them took his men who were to be on duty on the Sabbath, with those who were going off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. ¹⁰And the priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and shields which had belonged to King David, ^(J)that were in the temple of the Lord. ¹¹Then the escorts stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, all around the king, from the right ^[f]side of the temple to the left side of the temple, by the altar and the house. ¹²And he brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the ^(K)Testimony;^[g] they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, ^(L)“Long live the king!”

Death of Athaliah^(M)

¹³^(N)Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the escorts and the people, she came to the people in the temple of the Lord. ¹⁴When she looked, there was the king standing by ^(O)a pillar according to custom; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. So Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, “Treason! Treason!”

¹⁵And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, and said to them, “Take her outside ^[h]under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not let her be killed in the house of the Lord.” ¹⁶So they seized her; and she went by way of the horses’ entrance into the king’s house, and there she was killed.

¹⁷^(P)Then Jehoiada ^(Q)made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also ^(R)between the king and the people. ¹⁸And all the people of the land went to the ^(S)temple of Baal, and tore it down. They thoroughly ^(T)broke in pieces its altars and ^[i]images, and ^(U)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And ^(V)the priest appointed ^[j]officers over the house of the Lord. ¹⁹Then he took the captains of hundreds, the bodyguards, the escorts, and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and went by way of the gate of the escorts to the king’s house. Then he sat on the throne of the kings. ²⁰So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword in the king’s house. ²¹Jehoash was ^(W)seven years old when he became king.
