2 Corinthians 5:14-6:2
New English Translation

14 For the love of Christ[a] controls us, since we have concluded this, that Christ[b] died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised.[c] 16 So then from now on we acknowledge[d] no one from an outward human point of view.[e] Even though we have known Christ from such a human point of view,[f] now we do not know him in that way any longer. 17 So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away[g]—look, what is new[h] has come![i] 18 And all these things are from God who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 19 In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them, and he has given us[j] the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making his plea[k] through us. We plead with you[l] on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God!” 21 God[m] made the one who did not know sin[n] to be sin for us, so that in him[o] we would become the righteousness of God.

God’s Suffering Servants

6 Now because we are fellow workers, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.[p] 2 For he says, “I heard you at the acceptable time, and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[q] Look, now is the acceptable time; look, now is the day of salvation!

  1. 2 Corinthians 5:14 tn The phrase ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ (hē agapē tou Christou, “the love of Christ”) could be translated as either objective genitive (“our love for Christ”) or subjective genitive (“Christ’s love for us”). Either is grammatically possible, but with the reference to Christ’s death for all in the following clauses, a subjective genitive (“Christ’s love for us”) is more likely.

The reading without τὰ πάντα, however, has excellent support from both the Western and Alexandrian text-forms (P46 א B C D* F G 048 0243 365 629 1175 1739 co), and the different word order of the phrase which includes it (“all things new” or “new all things”) in the ms tradition indicates its secondary character. This secondary addition may have taken place because of assimilation to τὰ δὲ πάντα (ta de panta, “and all [these] things”) that begins the following verse.

16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one [a](D)according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ [b]according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 17 Therefore if anyone is (E)in Christ, he is (F)a new creation; (G)the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now (H)all these things are from God, (I)who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the (J)ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that (K)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, (L)not counting their transgressions against them, and [c]He has [d]committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 So then, we are (M)ambassadors for Christ, (N)as God is pleading through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be (O)reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who (P)knew no sin to be (Q)sin on our behalf, so that we might become the (R)righteousness of God in Him.

Commendable Ministers of God

6 And (S)working together with Him, (T)we also plead with you not to receive (U)the grace of God in vain— 2 for He says,

“(V)At the acceptable time I listened to you,
And on the day of salvation I helped you.”

Behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of salvation”—
