Sabá se rebela contra David
20 Por allí se encontraba un malvado que se llamaba Sabá, hijo de Bicrí, que era benjamita. Dando un toque de trompeta, se puso a gritar:
«¡Pueblo de Israel, todos a sus casas,
pues no tenemos parte con David
ni herencia con el hijo de Isaí!».
2 Entonces todos los israelitas abandonaron a David y siguieron a Sabá, hijo de Bicrí. Los de Judá, por su parte, se mantuvieron fieles a su rey y lo acompañaron desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalén.
3 Cuando el rey David llegó a su palacio en Jerusalén, sacó a las diez concubinas[a] que había dejado a cargo del palacio y las puso bajo vigilancia. Siguió manteniéndolas, pero no volvió a acostarse con ellas. Hasta el día de su muerte, quedaron encerradas y viviendo como si fueran viudas.
4 Luego el rey ordenó a Amasá: «Moviliza a las tropas de Judá y preséntate aquí con ellas dentro de tres días». 5 Amasá salió para movilizar a las tropas, pero no cumplió con el plazo. 6 Por eso David dijo a Abisay: «Ahora Sabá hijo de Bicrí va a perjudicarnos más que Absalón. Así que hazte cargo de la guardia real y sal a perseguirlo, no sea que llegue a alguna ciudad fortificada y se nos escape». 7 Entonces los soldados de Joab junto con los quereteos, los peleteos y todos los oficiales, bajo el mando de Abisay salieron de Jerusalén para perseguir a Sabá, hijo de Bicrí.
8 Al llegar a la gran roca que está en Gabaón, Amasá les salió al encuentro. Joab tenía su uniforme ajustado con un cinturón, y ceñida al muslo llevaba una daga envainada. Pero al caminar, la daga se le cayó.
9 Con la mano derecha, Joab tomó a Amasá por la barba para besarlo, mientras preguntaba: «¿Cómo estás, hermano?». 10 Amasá no se percató de que en la otra mano Joab llevaba la daga, entonces Joab se la clavó en el vientre y las entrañas de Amasá se derramaron por el suelo. Amasá murió de una sola puñalada. Luego Joab y su hermano Abisay persiguieron a Sabá, hijo de Bicrí.
11 Uno de los soldados de Joab, deteniéndose junto al cuerpo de Amasá, exclamó: «¡Todos los que estén a favor de Joab y que apoyen a David, sigan a Joab!». 12 Como el cuerpo de Amasá, bañado en sangre, había quedado en medio del camino, todas las tropas que pasaban se detenían para verlo. Cuando aquel soldado se dio cuenta de esto, retiró el cuerpo hacia el campo y lo cubrió con un manto. 13 Luego de que Amasá fue apartado del camino, todas las tropas fueron con Joab a perseguir a Sabá, hijo de Bicrí.
14 Sabá recorrió todas las tribus de Israel hasta llegar a Abel Betmacá, y allí todos los del clan de Bicrí[b] se le unieron. 15 Las tropas de Joab llegaron a la ciudad de Abel Betmacá y la sitiaron. Construyeron una rampa contra la fortificación para atacar la ciudad y, cuando los soldados comenzaban a derribar la muralla, 16 una astuta mujer de la ciudad gritó:
—¡Escúchenme! ¡Escúchenme! Díganle a Joab que venga acá para que yo pueda hablar con él.
17 Joab se le acercó.
—¿Es usted Joab? —preguntó la mujer.
—Así es.
Entonces la mujer dijo:
—Ponga atención a las palabras de su sierva.
—Te escucho —respondió Joab.
18 Ella continuó:
—Antiguamente, cuando había alguna discusión, la gente resolvía el asunto con este dicho: “Vayan y pregunten en Abel”. 19 Nuestra ciudad es la más pacífica y fiel del país, y muy importante en Israel; usted, sin embargo, intenta arrasarla. ¿Por qué quiere destruir la heredad del Señor?
20 —¡Que Dios me libre! —respondió Joab—. ¡Que Dios me libre de arrasarla y destruirla! 21 Yo no he venido a eso, sino a capturar a un hombre llamado Sabá, hijo de Bicrí. Es de la región montañosa de Efraín y se ha sublevado contra el rey David. Si me entregan a ese hombre, me retiro de la ciudad.
—Muy bien —respondió la mujer—. Desde la muralla arrojaremos su cabeza.
22 Y fue tal la sabiduría con que la mujer habló con todo el pueblo, que le cortaron la cabeza a Sabá, hijo de Bicrí, y se la arrojaron a Joab. Entonces Joab hizo tocar la trompeta y todos los soldados se retiraron de la ciudad y regresaron a sus casas. Joab, por su parte, volvió a Jerusalén para ver al rey.

20 En Guilgal estaba Sebá hijo de Bicrí, que era de la tribu de Benjamín. Como Sebá era muy malo, tocó la trompeta y dijo:
«¡Israelitas, regresemos a nuestras casas!
¡No tenemos nada que ver con David,
ni ganamos nada con seguirlo!»
2 Al oír esto, todos los israelitas dejaron a David y siguieron a Sebá. Sin embargo, los de Judá fueron fieles a David y lo siguieron desde el río Jordán hasta Jerusalén.
3 Cuando David llegó a Jerusalén, encerró en una casa a las diez mujeres que había dejado cuidando su palacio. Desde entonces ellas vivieron como si fueran viudas, pues aunque David siguió manteniéndolas, ya no volvió a tener relaciones sexuales con ellas.
4 Después de eso, el rey le dijo a Amasá: «Tú eres el jefe de mi ejército, así que reúne a todos los soldados de Judá, y ven a verme con ellos dentro de tres días».
5 Amasá fue a reunirlos, pero se tardó más tiempo. 6 Por eso David le dijo a Abisai:
«Ahora Sebá puede causarnos más problemas que Absalón. Así que toma a tus mejores soldados y ve a perseguirlo. De lo contrario, se irá a alguna ciudad bien protegida y se nos escapará».
7 Abisai salió de Jerusalén y se fue a perseguir a Sebá, acompañado de Joab y sus soldados, y también de los mejores guerreros del grupo filisteo. 8 Cuando llegaron a Gabaón, donde había una gran piedra, se encontraron con Amasá.
Joab llevaba puesta su ropa de campaña. En la cintura llevaba una espada sujetada por un cinturón, pero al caminar se le cayó. 9 Joab la recogió y se acercó a saludar a Amasá. Con la mano derecha le tomó la barba, como si fuera a besarlo, y le preguntó: «Hermano, ¿cómo te va?»
10-13 Amasá no se dio cuenta de que en la otra mano Joab llevaba la espada, así que Joab le clavó la espada en el vientre y se le salieron los intestinos. No hizo falta que Joab lo rematara, pues Amasá murió al instante.
Uno de los soldados de Joab se paró junto a Amasá y dijo: «Los que estén a favor de David y de Joab, ¡sigan a Joab!» Pero todos los que pasaban se detenían a ver a Amasá, pues estaba tirado a la mitad del camino y bañado en su propia sangre. Entonces el soldado arrastró a Amasá hasta el campo y lo cubrió con una capa. Así ya nadie se detuvo a mirarlo, y todos se fueron tras Joab y su hermano Abisai para perseguir a Sebá.
14 Mientras tanto, Sebá andaba recorriendo todas las tribus de Israel, y en la ciudad de Abel-bet-maacá se le unieron los familiares de su padre Bicrí.
15 Cuando llegaron Joab y su ejército, rodearon la ciudad, y para entrar en ella, construyeron una rampa junto a la muralla; luego, todo el ejército comenzó a derribar la muralla.
16 Desde adentro de la ciudad una mujer muy astuta empezó a gritar:
—¡Escúchenme, escúchenme! ¡Díganle a Joab que quiero hablar con él!
17 Cuando Joab se acercó, la mujer le preguntó:
—¿Es usted Joab?
—Sí, soy yo —le contestó.
Entonces ella le dijo:
—Escúcheme usted con atención.
—Te escucho —dijo Joab.
18-19 Ella le dijo:
—Puede confiar en nosotros, pues somos israelitas y no nos gusta la guerra. Abel-bet-maacá es una de las ciudades más importantes de Israel. Es tan importante que hasta hay un dicho popular: “Si tienes algún problema, arréglalo en Abel”. ¿Por qué va usted a destruir una ciudad que le pertenece a Dios?
20 Y Joab le respondió:
—¡Que Dios me libre de acabar con esta ciudad! 21 No me interesa destruirla. Pero en ella está un hombre de las montañas de Efraín. Se llama Sebá, y se ha rebelado contra el rey David, a quien yo sirvo. Entrégamelo, y no atacaré la ciudad.
La mujer le aseguró:
—Si es así, ahora mismo le echaremos la cabeza de Sebá desde la muralla.
22 La mujer fue a convencer a la gente de que le cortaran la cabeza a Sebá. Así que le cortaron la cabeza, y desde la muralla se la arrojaron a Joab.
Joab ordenó la retirada, y sus soldados regresaron a sus casas. Luego Joab se fue a Jerusalén para encontrarse con el rey.

23 Así fue como Joab quedó al mando de todo el ejército de Israel. Mientras que Benaías hijo de Joiadá, quedó al mando del grupo de soldados filisteos.
24 Adoram era jefe de los trabajadores, y Josafat hijo de Ahilud tenía a su cargo los documentos oficiales.
25 Sevá era el secretario, y Sadoc y Abiatar eran los sacerdotes.

Sheba Goes Up Against David
20 Now (A)a vile fellow happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of (B)Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said,
“(C)We have no portion in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in (D)the son of Jesse;
(E)Every man to his tents, O Israel!”
2 So all the men of Israel went up from following David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah clung to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.
3 Then David came to his house at Jerusalem, and (F)the king took the ten women, the concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and placed them under guard and provided them with sustenance, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as widows.
4 Then the king said to (G)Amasa, “Call out the men of Judah for me within three days, and you yourself stand here.” 5 So Amasa went to call out the men of Judah, but he (H)delayed longer than the set time which he had appointed him. 6 And David said to (I)Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; (J)take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he find for himself fortified cities and deliver himself from our sight.” 7 So Joab’s men pursued him, (K)along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men; and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8 They were at the large stone which is in (L)Gibeon, and Amasa came [a]to meet them. Now Joab was [b]dressed in his military attire, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened at his [c]waist; and as he came out, it fell out. 9 Then Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And (M)Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

10 But Amasa was not on guard against the sword which was in Joab’s hand so (N)he struck him in the belly with it and poured out his inward parts on the ground, and did not strike him again, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 Now there stood by him one of Joab’s young men, and said, “Whoever delights in Joab and whoever is for David, (O)let him follow Joab.” 12 But Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. And the man saw that all the people stood still. So he [d]removed Amasa from the highway into the field and threw a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.
The Beheading of Sheba
13 As soon as he was removed from the highway, all the men passed on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 Now he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, even Beth-maacah, and all the Berites; and they were assembled and also came after him. 15 So they came and besieged him in (P)Abel Beth-maacah, and (Q)they [e]cast up a siege ramp against the city, and it stood by the rampart; and all the people who were with Joab were wreaking destruction in order to cause the wall to fall. 16 Then (R)a wise woman called from the city, “Hear, hear! Please tell Joab, ‘Draw near that I may speak with you.’” 17 So he drew near to her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” And he answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18 Then she spoke, saying, “Formerly they used to speak in this way, saying, ‘They will surely ask advice at Abel,’ and thus they ended the dispute. 19 I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. (S)You are seeking to put to death a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up (T)the inheritance of Yahweh?” 20 And Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy! 21 Such is not the case. But a man from (U)the hill country of Ephraim, (V)Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give him over alone, and I will go from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.” 22 Then the woman came to all the people in her (W)wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So (X)he blew the trumpet, and they were scattered from the city, each to his tent. Joab also returned to the king at Jerusalem.
23 (Y)Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24 and Adoram was over the forced labor, and (Z)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 25 and Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and (AA)Abiathar were priests; 26 and Ira the Jairite was also a priest to David.
