² And Saul chose for himself 3,000 men of Israel, of which 2,000 were with Saul in ^(A)Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while 1,000 were with Jonathan at ^(B)Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent.

¹⁷ And they took Absalom and cast him into ^[a]a deep pit in the forest and ^(A)set over him a very great heap of stones. And ^(B)all Israel fled, each to his tent.

¹⁶ Now all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them. So the people responded to the king, saying,

^(B)So all Israel went to their tents.
