Jehoram Reigns over Judah

21 (A)And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Jehoram his son became king in his place. 2 Now he had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, [a]Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king (B)of Israel. 3 And their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and precious things, (C)with fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

4 So Jehoram arose over the kingdom of his father and strengthened himself, and he (D)killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the commanders of Israel also. 5 (E)Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6 (F)And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, (G)for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh. 7 However, Yahweh was not willing to make the house of David a ruin because of the covenant which He had cut with David, (H)and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.

Revolt Against Judah

8 In his days (I)Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah and made a king over themselves. 9 Then Jehoram crossed over with his commanders and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck down the Edomites who were surrounding him and the commanders of the chariots. 10 So Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time from under his hand, because he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers. 11 Moreover, (J)he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem (K)to play the harlot and drove Judah astray.

12 Then a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet saying, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of your father David, ‘Because (L)you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father (M)and the ways of Asa king of Judah, 13 but (N)have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the harlot (O)as the house of Ahab played the harlot, and you (P)have also killed your brothers, [b]your own family, who were better than you, 14 behold, Yahweh is going to smite your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a great [c]calamity; 15 and (Q)you will suffer [d]severe sickness, a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the sickness, day by day.’”

16 Then (R)Yahweh stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and (S)the Arabs who [e]bordered the Ethiopians; 17 and they went up against Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions found in the king’s house together with his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except [f](T)Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

18 So after all this Yahweh smote him (U)in his bowels with an incurable sickness. 19 Now it happened in the course of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels came out because of his sickness and he died with this greatly painful disease. And his people made no fire for him like (V)the fire for his fathers. 20 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years; and he departed [g](W)with no one’s regret, and they buried him in the city of David, (X)but not in the tombs of the kings.

21 Y Josafat durmió con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David, y su hijo Joram reinó en su lugar(A). 2 Y tuvo hermanos, los hijos de Josafat: Azarías, Jehiel, Zacarías, Azaryahu, Micael y Sefatías. Todos estos eran hijos de Josafat, rey de Israel(B). 3 Su padre les había dado muchos presentes de plata, oro y cosas preciosas, y[a] ciudades fortificadas en Judá(C), pero dio el reino a Joram porque era el primogénito.

4 Cuando Joram tomó posesión del[b] reino de su padre y se hizo fuerte, mató a espada a todos sus hermanos(D), y también a algunos de los jefes de Israel. 5 (E)Joram tenía treinta y dos años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó ocho años en Jerusalén. 6 Y anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel(F), tal como había hecho la casa de Acab (pues la hija de Acab era su mujer(G)), e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor. 7 Sin embargo el Señor no quiso destruir la casa de David a causa del pacto que había hecho con David, y porque le había prometido[c] darle una lámpara[d] a él y a sus hijos para siempre(H).

8 En sus días se rebeló Edom contra el dominio[e] de Judá(I), y pusieron rey sobre ellos. 9 Entonces pasó Joram con sus comandantes, y todos sus carros con él. Y aconteció que se levantó de noche y atacó[f] a los edomitas que lo tenían cercado a él y a los comandantes de los carros. 10 Y Edom se rebeló contra el dominio[g] de Judá hasta el día de hoy. Entonces Libna se rebeló en ese mismo tiempo contra su dominio[h], porque Joram había abandonado al Señor, Dios de sus padres. 11 Hizo además lugares altos en los montes de Judá(J), haciendo que los habitantes de Jerusalén se prostituyeran(K) y que Judá se desviara. 12 Y le llegó una carta del profeta Elías, que decía: Así dice el Señor, Dios de tu padre David: «Por cuanto no has andado en los caminos de Josafat(L) tu padre, ni en los caminos de Asa(M), rey de Judá, 13 sino que has andado en el camino de los reyes de Israel(N), y has hecho que Judá y los habitantes de Israel se hayan prostituido como se prostituyó la casa de Acab(O), y también has matado a tus hermanos(P), tu propia familia[i], que eran mejores que tú, 14 he aquí, el Señor herirá con gran azote[j] a tu pueblo, a tus hijos, a tus mujeres y a todas tus posesiones; 15 y tú sufrirás una grave enfermedad[k], una enfermedad(Q) de los intestinos, hasta que día tras día se te[l] salgan a causa de la enfermedad».

16 Entonces el Señor incitó contra(R) Joram el espíritu de los filisteos y de los árabes(S) que eran vecinos[m] de los etíopes; 17 y subieron contra Judá y la invadieron, y se llevaron todas las posesiones que se hallaban en la casa del rey, y también a sus hijos y a sus mujeres, de modo que no le quedó más hijo que Joacaz[n](T), el menor de sus hijos. 18 Después de todo esto, el Señor lo hirió en los intestinos con una enfermedad incurable(U). 19 Y aconteció que con el correr del tiempo, al cabo de dos años, los intestinos se le salieron a causa de su enfermedad, y murió con grandes dolores. Y su pueblo no le encendió una hoguera como la hoguera que habían encendido por sus padres(V). 20 Tenía treinta y dos años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó ocho años en Jerusalén; y murió sin que nadie lo lamentara[o](W), y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes(X).
