since indeed God considers it (A)just (B)to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant (C)relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when (D)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (E)with his mighty angels (F)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those (G)who do not know God and on those who (H)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of (I)eternal destruction, (J)away from[a] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 (K)when he comes on (L)that day (M)to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our (N)testimony to you (O)was believed. 11 To this end we (P)always pray for you, that our God may (Q)make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every (R)work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus (S)may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Man of Lawlessness

Now concerning (T)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (U)being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers,[b] not to be quickly shaken in mind or (V)alarmed, either (W)by a spirit or a (X)spoken word, or (Y)a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that (Z)the day of the Lord has come. (AA)Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, (AB)unless the rebellion comes first, and (AC)the man of lawlessness[c] is revealed, (AD)the son of destruction,[d] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (AE)proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For (AF)the mystery of lawlessness (AG)is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then (AH)the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus (AI)will kill with (AJ)the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by (AK)the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan (AL)with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for (AM)those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore (AN)God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe (AO)what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned (AP)who did not believe the truth but (AQ)had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Firm

13 But (AR)we ought always to give thanks to God for you, (AS)brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you (AT)as the firstfruits[e] (AU)to be saved, (AV)through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through (AW)our gospel, (AX)so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, (AY)stand firm and hold to (AZ)the traditions that you were taught by us, either (BA)by our spoken word or by (BB)our letter.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, (BC)who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good (BD)hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and (BE)establish them in every good work and word.

Pray for Us

Finally, brothers,[f] (BF)pray for us, that (BG)the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[g] as happened among you, and (BH)that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For (BI)not all have faith. But (BJ)the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and (BK)guard you against (BL)the evil one.[h] And (BM)we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord (BN)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, (BO)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (BP)that you keep away from any (BQ)brother (BR)who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know (BS)how you ought to imitate us, because (BT)we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but (BU)with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was (BV)not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves (BW)an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: (BX)If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you (BY)walk in idleness, not busy at work, but (BZ)busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[i]

13 As for you, brothers, (CA)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and (CB)have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (CC)Do not regard him as an enemy, but (CD)warn him as a brother.

Benediction

16 Now may (CE)the Lord of peace himself (CF)give you peace at all times in every way. (CG)The Lord be with you all.

17 I, Paul, write (CH)this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. 18 (CI)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

God is just:(A) He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you(B) and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven(C) in blazing fire(D) with his powerful angels.(E) He will punish(F) those who do not know God(G) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.(H) They will be punished with everlasting destruction(I) and shut out from the presence of the Lord(J) and from the glory of his might(K) 10 on the day(L) he comes to be glorified(M) in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.(N)

11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you,(O) that our God may make you worthy(P) of his calling,(Q) and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness(R) and your every deed prompted by faith.(S) 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,(T) and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.[a]

The Man of Lawlessness

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ(U) and our being gathered to him,(V) we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter(W)—asserting that the day of the Lord(X) has already come.(Y) Don’t let anyone deceive you(Z) in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion(AA) occurs and the man of lawlessness[b] is revealed,(AB) the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God(AC) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.(AD)

Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?(AE) And now you know what is holding him back,(AF) so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back(AG) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed,(AH) whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth(AI) and destroy by the splendor of his coming.(AJ) The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan(AK) works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders(AL) that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.(AM) They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.(AN) 11 For this reason God sends them(AO) a powerful delusion(AP) so that they will believe the lie(AQ) 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.(AR)

Stand Firm

13 But we ought always to thank God for you,(AS) brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[c](AT) to be saved(AU) through the sanctifying work of the Spirit(AV) and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you(AW) to this through our gospel,(AX) that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm(AY) and hold fast to the teachings[d] we passed on to you,(AZ) whether by word of mouth or by letter.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,(BA) who loved us(BB) and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage(BC) your hearts and strengthen(BD) you in every good deed and word.

Request for Prayer

As for other matters, brothers and sisters,(BE) pray for us(BF) that the message of the Lord(BG) may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.(BH) And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people,(BI) for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful,(BJ) and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.(BK) We have confidence(BL) in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts(BM) into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

Warning Against Idleness

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,(BN) we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from(BO) every believer who is idle and disruptive(BP) and does not live according to the teaching[e] you received from us.(BQ) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example.(BR) We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked(BS) night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help,(BT) but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.(BU) 10 For even when we were with you,(BV) we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work(BW) shall not eat.”

11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies.(BX) 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ(BY) to settle down and earn the food they eat.(BZ) 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.(CA)

14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them,(CB) in order that they may feel ashamed.(CC) 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.(CD)

Final Greetings

16 Now may the Lord of peace(CE) himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.(CF)

17 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand,(CG) which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.(CH)
