Isaiah 9

2 [c](D)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in the land of the shadow of death,
The light will shine on them.
3 (E)You shall multiply the nation,
You (F)shall [d]make great [e]their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness [f]of harvest,
As [g](G)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
4 For (H)You shall shatter the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their (I)taskmaster, as [h]at the battle of (J)Midian.
5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the rumbling of battle,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
6 For a (K)child will be born to us, a (L)son will be given to us;
And the (M)government will [i]rest (N)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called (O)Wonderful Counselor, (P)Mighty God,
Eternal (Q)Father, Prince of (R)Peace.
7 There will be (S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the (T)throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with (U)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
(V)The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.
Yahweh’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance
8 The Lord sends a [j]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
9 And all the people know it,
That is, (W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Saying in lofty pride and in (X)arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will (Y)rebuild with cut stones;
The sycamores have been cut in pieces,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore Yahweh exalts against them adversaries from (Z)Rezin
And incites their enemies,
12 The Arameans on the east and the (AA)Philistines on the west;
And they (AB)devour Israel with [k]gaping jaws.
(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn back,
And His hand is still stretched out.
13 Yet the people (AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they (AE)seek Yahweh of hosts.
14 So Yahweh cuts off (AF)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush (AG)in a single day.
15 The head is (AH)the elder and the [l]highly respected man,
And the prophet who teaches (AI)falsehood is the tail.
16 (AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are [m]brought to confusion.
17 Therefore the Lord (AK)is not glad in their choice men,
(AL)Nor does He have compassion on their [n]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is (AM)godless and an (AN)evildoer,
And every (AO)mouth is speaking wicked foolishness.
(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn back,
And His hand is still stretched out.
18 (AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It even sets the thickets of the forest aflame,
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the (AR)fury of Yahweh of hosts the (AS)land is burned up,
And the (AT)people are like fuel for the fire;
No (AU)man spares his brother.
20 [o]They slice off what is on the right hand but still are (AV)hungry,
And [p]they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the (AW)flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
(AX)And together they are against Judah.
(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn back,
And His hand is still stretched out.

Ministry in Galilee
23 And Jesus was going (I)throughout all Galilee, (J)teaching in their synagogues and (K)preaching the [f]gospel of the kingdom, and (L)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
24 And the news about Him spread (M)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (N)demoniacs, [g](O)epileptics, (P)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 And large crowds (Q)followed Him from Galilee and (R)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (S)beyond the Jordan.

A Kingdom Divided

25 (L)And (M)knowing their thoughts He said to them, “[k]Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and [l]any city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 And if (N)Satan casts out Satan, he [m]is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I (O)by [n]Beelzebul cast out demons, (P)by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 28 But (Q)if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.
Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
30 (R)He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
31 “(S)Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 (T)And whoever [o]speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever [p]speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in (U)this age or in the age to come.
The Heart Is Revealed by Words
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for (V)the tree is known by its fruit. 34 (W)You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak [q]what is good? (X)For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35 (Y)The good man brings out of his good treasure [r]what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure [s]what is evil. 36 But I tell you that every [t]careless word that people [u]speak, they shall give an accounting for it in (Z)the day of judgment. 37 For [v]by your words you will be justified, and [w]by your words you will be condemned.”
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered and said to Him, “Teacher, (AA)we want to see [x]a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “(AB)An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as (AC)Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will (AD)the Son of Man be (AE)three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (AF)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because (AG)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, (AH)something greater than Jonah is here. 42 (AI)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, (AJ)something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “(AK)Now when the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there; and (AL)the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
46 (AM)While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His (AN)mother and (AO)brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 [y]Now someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.” 48 But [z]Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
