[a](A)An overseer, then, must be above reproach, (B)the husband of one wife, (C)temperate, sensible, respectable, (D)hospitable, (E)able to teach, (F)not addicted to wine [b]or pugnacious, but considerate, peaceable, (G)free from the love of money; (H)leading his own household well, having his children in submission with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to lead his own household, how will he take care of (I)the church of God?), and not a new convert, so that he will not become (J)conceited and fall into the (K)condemnation of the devil. And he must (L)have a good reputation with (M)those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and (N)the snare of the devil.

(O)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not [c]double-tongued, (P)not indulging in much wine, (Q)not fond of dishonest gain, (R)but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 (S)And these men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.
