(A)I was with you (B)in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching (C)were not with persuasive words of [a]human wisdom, (D)but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the (E)power of God.

Spiritual Wisdom

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God [b]ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for (F)had they known, they would not have (G)crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

(H)“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But (I)God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the (J)spirit of the man which is in him? (K)Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but (L)the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the [c]Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 (M)But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For (N)“who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” (O)But we have the mind of Christ.

Sectarianism Is Carnal

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to (P)babes in Christ. I fed you with (Q)milk and not with solid food; (R)for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and [d]behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?

Watering, Working, Warning

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but (S)ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? (T)I planted, (U)Apollos watered, (V)but God gave the increase. So then (W)neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, (X)and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

For (Y)we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are (Z)God’s building. 10 (AA)According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid (AB)the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than (AC)that which is laid, (AD)which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day (AE)will declare it, because (AF)it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

16 (AG)Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone [e]defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Avoid Worldly Wisdom

18 (AH)Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, (AI)“He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, (AJ)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For (AK)all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. 23 And (AL)you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

Stewards of the Mysteries of God

Let a man so consider us, as (AM)servants of Christ (AN)and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human [f]court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.

I came to you(A) in weakness(B) with great fear and trembling.(C) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(D) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(E) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(F)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(G) but not the wisdom of this age(H) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(I) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(J) that has been hidden(K) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(L) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(M) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[a]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(N)

10 these are the things God has revealed(O) to us by his Spirit.(P)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(Q) except their own spirit(R) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(S) of the world,(T) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(U) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[b] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(V) but considers them foolishness,(W) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(X) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[c](Y)

But we have the mind of Christ.(Z)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(AA) but as people who are still worldly(AB)—mere infants(AC) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(AD) for you were not yet ready for it.(AE) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(AF) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(AG) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(AH) And what is Paul? Only servants,(AI) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(AJ) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(AK) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(AL) you are God’s field,(AM) God’s building.(AN)

10 By the grace God has given me,(AO) I laid a foundation(AP) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(AQ) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(AR) because the Day(AS) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(AT) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(AU) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(AV)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(AW) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(AX) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(AY) by the standards of this age,(AZ) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(BA) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[d];(BB) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[e](BC) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(BD) All things are yours,(BE) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(BF) or Cephas[f](BG) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(BH)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(BI) and Christ is of God.

The Nature of True Apostleship

This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants(BJ) of Christ and as those entrusted(BK) with the mysteries(BL) God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
