Pray for All People

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, (A)for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and (B)dignified in every way. This is good, and (C)it is pleasing in the sight of (D)God our Savior, who desires (E)all people to be saved and (F)to come to (G)the knowledge of the truth. For (H)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus, (I)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is (J)the testimony given (K)at the proper time. (L)For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ((M)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), (N)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that (O)in every place the men should pray, (P)lifting (Q)holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also (R)that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 (S)but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly (T)with all submissiveness. 12 (U)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (V)For Adam was formed first, (W)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (X)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (Y)childbearing—if they continue in (Z)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Timothy 2:5 men and man render the same Greek word that is translated people in verses 1 and 4

И тъй, моля преди всичко да се правят просби, молитви, молби, благодарения за всички човеци,

(A)за царе и за всички, които са на власт, за да прекарваме тих и мирен живот в пълно благочестие и чистота;

(E)И тъй, желая мъжете да се молят на всяко място, като въздигат чисти ръце без гняв и съмнение;

13 (I)Защото по-напред биде създаден Адам, а после Ева;

14 (J)и не Адам биде прелъстен, а жената биде прелъстена и падна в престъпление;

15 но ще се спаси чрез раждане деца, ако пребъде във вяра, в любов и в светост с целомъдрие.

1-2 Here then is my charge: First, supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings should be made on behalf of all men: for kings and rulers in positions of responsibility, so that our common life may be lived in peace and quiet, with a proper sense of God and of our responsibility to him for what we do with our lives.

3-6 In the sight of God our saviour this is undoubtedly the right thing to pray for; for his purpose is that all men should be saved and come to realise the truth. And that is, that there is only one God, and only one intermediary between God and men, Jesus Christ the man. He gave himself as a ransom for us all—an act of redemption which happened once, but which stands for all times as a witness to what he is.

I was appointed proclaimer and messenger of this great act of his, to teach (incredible as it may sound) the Gentile world to believe and know the truth.

I want the men to pray in all the churches with sincerity, without resentment or doubt in their minds.

My views on men and women in the Church

9-15 The women should be dressed quietly, and their demeanour should be modest and serious. The adornment of a Christian woman is not a matter of an elaborate coiffure, expensive clothes or valuable jewellery, but the living of a good life. A woman should learn quietly and humbly. Personally, I don’t allow women to teach, nor do I ever put them into positions of authority over men—I believe their role is to be receptive. (My reasons are that man was created before woman. Further, it was Eve and not Adam who was first deceived and fell into sin. Nevertheless I believe that women will come safely through child-birth if they maintain a life of faith, love, holiness and gravity).
