²⁰ Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, ^(A)“Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?”

² But ^(A)who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For ^(B)he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.

⁹ And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?”

¹⁷ for ^(A)the great day of their wrath has come, and ^(B)who can stand?”

³⁷ Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes ^(A)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.

⁸ But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ^(A)“Depart from me, for ^(B)I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

¹¹ And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza^[a] to this day. ¹² And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” ¹³ So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house ^(A)of Obed-edom the Gittite.

⁷ And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and ^(A)God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.

⁸ So they sent and gathered together all ^(A)the lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. ⁹ But after they had brought it around, ^(B)the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that ^(C)tumors broke out on them. ¹⁰ So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” ^11 (D)They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. ^(E)The hand of God was very heavy there. ¹² The men who did not die were struck with ^(F)tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
