Jonathan Warns David

20 Then David fled from Naioth ^(A)in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” ² And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.” ³ But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that ^(B)I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, ^(C)as the Lord lives and ^(D)as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.” ⁴ Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.” ⁵ David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is ^(E)the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, ^(F)that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening. ^6 (G)If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run ^(H)to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly ^(I)sacrifice there for all the clan.’ ⁷ If he says, ‘Good!’ it will be well with your servant, but if he is angry, then know that ^(J)harm is determined by him. ⁸ Therefore deal kindly with your servant, ^(K)for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. ^(L)But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?” ⁹ And Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I knew that ^(M)it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?” ¹⁰ Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?” ¹¹ And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.

¹² And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness!^[a] When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? ¹³ But should it please my father to do you harm, ^(N)the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. ^(O)May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father. ¹⁴ If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die; ^15 (P)and do not cut off^[b] your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” ¹⁶ And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, ^(Q)“May^[c] the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.” ¹⁷ And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, ^(R)for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¹⁸ Then Jonathan said to him, ^(S)“Tomorrow is the new moon, and ^(T)you will be missed, because ^(U)your seat will be empty. ¹⁹ On the third day go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside the stone heap.^{[d] 20} And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. ²¹ And behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then you are to come, for, ^(V)as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger. ²² But if I say to the youth, ^(W)‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go, for the Lord has sent you away. ^23 (X)And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, ^(Y)the Lord is between you and me forever.”

²⁴ So David hid himself in the field. And when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food. ²⁵ The king sat on his seat, as at other times, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan sat opposite,^[e] and Abner sat by Saul's side, ^(Z)but David's place was empty.

²⁶ Yet Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. ^(AA)He is not clean; surely he is not clean.” ²⁷ But on ^(AB)the second day, the day after the new moon, ^(AC)David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?” ²⁸ Jonathan answered Saul, ^(AD)“David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. ²⁹ He said, ‘Let me go, for our clan holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king's table.”

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” ³² Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, ^(AE)“Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” ^33 (AF)But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew ^(AG)that his father was determined to put David to death. ³⁴ And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

³⁵ In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little boy. ³⁶ And he said to his boy, “Run and find the arrows that I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. ³⁷ And when the boy came to the place of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the boy and said, ^(AH)“Is not the arrow beyond you?” ³⁸ And Jonathan called after the boy, “Hurry! Be quick! Do not stay!” So Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master. ³⁹ But the boy knew nothing. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter. ⁴⁰ And Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, “Go and carry them to the city.” ⁴¹ And as soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap^[f] and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, David weeping the most. ⁴² Then Jonathan said to David, ^(AI)“Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ^(AJ)‘The Lord shall be between me and you, ^(AK)and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.^[g]

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And again Jesus ^(A)spoke to them in parables, saying, ^2 (B)“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave ^(C)a wedding feast for his son, ³ and ^(D)sent his servants^[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. ^4 (E)Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my ^(F)dinner, ^(G)my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ ⁵ But ^(H)they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, ⁶ while the rest seized his servants, ^(I)treated them shamefully, and ^(J)killed them. ⁷ The king was angry, and he sent his troops and ^(K)destroyed those murderers and burned their city. ⁸ Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not ^(L)worthy. ⁹ Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ ¹⁰ And those servants went out into the roads and ^(M)gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

¹¹ “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there ^(N)a man who had no wedding garment. ¹² And he said to him, ^(O)‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. ¹³ Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and ^(P)cast him into the outer darkness. In that place ^(Q)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ ¹⁴ For many are ^(R)called, but few are ^(S)chosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

^15 (T)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how ^(U)to entangle him in his words. ¹⁶ And they sent ^(V)their disciples to him, along with ^(W)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ^(X)we know that you are true and teach ^(Y)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for ^(Z)you are not swayed by appearances.^{[b] 17} Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay ^(AA)taxes to ^(AB)Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why ^(AC)put me to the test, you hypocrites? ¹⁹ Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.^{[c] 20} And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” ²¹ They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, ^(AD)“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” ²² When they heard it, they marveled. And they ^(AE)left him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²³ The same day ^(AF)Sadducees came to him, ^(AG)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ²⁴ saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ^(AH)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ ²⁵ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. ²⁶ So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ²⁷ After them all, the woman died. ²⁸ In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

²⁹ But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, ^(AI)because you know neither the Scriptures nor ^(AJ)the power of God. ³⁰ For in the resurrection they neither ^(AK)marry nor ^(AL)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ³¹ And as for the resurrection of the dead, ^(AM)have you not read what was said to you by God: ^32 (AN)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” ³³ And when the crowd heard it, ^(AO)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

^34 (AP)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced ^(AQ)the Sadducees, they gathered together. ^35 (AR)And one of them, ^(AS)a lawyer, asked him a question ^(AT)to test him. ³⁶ “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷ And he said to him, ^(AU)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ³⁸ This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹ And ^(AV)a second is like it: ^(AW)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ^40 (AX)On these two commandments depend ^(AY)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

^41 (AZ)Now while the Pharisees ^(BA)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴² saying, “What do you think about ^(BB)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, ^(BC)“The son of David.” ⁴³ He said to them, “How is it then that David, ^(BD)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

⁴⁵ If then David calls him Lord, ^(BF)how is he his son?” ^46 (BG)And no one was able to answer him a word, ^(BH)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus ^(BI)said to the crowds and to his disciples, ^2 (BJ)“The scribes and the Pharisees ^(BK)sit on Moses' seat, ³ so do and observe whatever they tell you, ^(BL)but not the works they do. ^(BM)For they preach, but do not practice. ^4 (BN)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,^[d] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ^5 (BO)They do all their deeds ^(BP)to be seen by others. For they make ^(BQ)their phylacteries broad and ^(BR)their fringes long, ⁶ and they ^(BS)love the place of honor at feasts and ^(BT)the best seats in the synagogues ⁷ and ^(BU)greetings in ^(BV)the marketplaces and being called ^(BW)rabbi^[e] by others. ^8 (BX)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are ^(BY)all brothers.^{[f] 9 (BZ)}And call no man your father on earth, for ^(CA)you have one Father, who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, ^(CB)the Christ. ^11 (CC)The greatest among you shall be your servant. ^12 (CD)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹³ “But woe ^(CE)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you ^(CF)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you ^(CG)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.^{[g] 15} Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single ^(CH)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a ^(CI)child of ^(CJ)hell^[h] as yourselves.

¹⁶ “Woe to ^(CK)you, ^(CL)blind guides, who say, ^(CM)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ ¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or ^(CN)the temple that has made the gold sacred? ¹⁸ And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by ^(CO)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ ¹⁹ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or ^(CP)the altar that makes the gift sacred? ²⁰ So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. ²¹ And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by ^(CQ)him who dwells in it. ²² And whoever swears by ^(CR)heaven swears by ^(CS)the throne of God and by ^(CT)him who sits upon it.

^23 (CU)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ^(CV)you tithe mint and dill and ^(CW)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: ^(CX)justice and mercy and faithfulness. ^(CY)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ²⁴ You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing ^(CZ)a camel!

^25 (DA)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ^(DB)you clean the outside of ^(DC)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of ^(DD)greed and self-indulgence. ²⁶ You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of ^(DE)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

^27 (DF)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like ^(DG)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and ^(DH)all uncleanness. ²⁸ So you also ^(DI)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of ^(DJ)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹ Thus you witness against yourselves that you are ^(DL)sons of those who murdered the prophets. ^32 (DM)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, ^(DN)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to ^(DO)hell? ^34 (DP)Therefore ^(DQ)I send you ^(DR)prophets and wise men and ^(DS)scribes, ^(DT)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(DU)some you will ^(DV)flog in your synagogues and ^(DW)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(DX)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(DY)Abel to the blood of ^(DZ)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[i] whom you murdered between ^(EA)the sanctuary and ^(EB)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(EC)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

^37 (ED)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(EE)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have ^(EF)gathered ^(EG)your children together ^(EH)as a hen gathers her brood ^(EI)under her wings, and ^(EJ)you were not willing! ³⁸ See, ^(EK)your house is left to you desolate. ³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ^(EL)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 ^(EM)Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. ² But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, ^(EN)there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

³ As he sat on ^(EO)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him ^(EP)privately, saying, “Tell us, ^(EQ)when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your ^(ER)coming and of ^(ES)the end of the age?” ⁴ And Jesus answered them, ^(ET)“See that no one leads you astray. ⁵ For ^(EU)many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am ^(EV)the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. ⁶ And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you ^(EW)are not alarmed, for this ^(EX)must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁷ For ^(EY)nation will rise against nation, and ^(EZ)kingdom against kingdom, and there will be ^(FA)famines and earthquakes in various places. ⁸ All these are but the beginning of ^(FB)the birth pains.

⁹ “Then ^(FC)they will deliver you up ^(FD)to tribulation and ^(FE)put you to death, and ^(FF)you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. ¹⁰ And then many will fall away^[j] and ^(FG)betray one another and hate one another. ¹¹ And many ^(FH)false prophets will arise ^(FI)and lead many astray. ¹² And because lawlessness will be increased, ^(FJ)the love of many will grow cold. ^13 (FK)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ¹⁴ And this gospel of the kingdom ^(FL)will be proclaimed throughout the whole world ^(FM)as a testimony ^(FN)to all nations, and ^(FO)then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

¹⁵ “So when you see the abomination of desolation ^(FP)spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in ^(FQ)the holy place (^(FR)let the reader understand), ¹⁶ then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ^17 (FS)Let the one who is on ^(FT)the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, ¹⁸ and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. ¹⁹ And ^(FU)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! ²⁰ Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. ²¹ For then there will be ^(FV)great tribulation, ^(FW)such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ²² And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for ^(FX)the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. ^23 (FY)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. ²⁴ For ^(FZ)false christs and ^(GA)false prophets will arise and ^(GB)perform great signs and wonders, ^(GC)so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵ See, ^(GD)I have told you beforehand. ²⁶ So, if they say to you, ‘Look, ^(GE)he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. ^27 (GF)For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be ^(GG)the coming of the Son of Man. ^28 (GH)Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

²⁹ “Immediately after ^(GI)the tribulation of those days ^(GJ)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and ^(GK)the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ³⁰ Then ^(GL)will appear in heaven ^(GM)the sign of the Son of Man, and then ^(GN)all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and ^(GO)they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven ^(GP)with power and great glory. ³¹ And ^(GQ)he will send out his angels with a loud ^(GR)trumpet call, and they will ^(GS)gather ^(GT)his elect from ^(GU)the four winds, ^(GV)from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

³² “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ³³ So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, ^(GW)at the very gates. ^34 (GX)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ^35 (GY)Heaven and earth will pass away, but ^(GZ)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

³⁶ “But concerning that day and hour ^(HA)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, ^(HB)nor the Son,^{[k] (HC)}but the Father only. ^37 (HD)For as were the days of Noah, ^(HE)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ^38 (HF)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, ^(HG)marrying and giving in marriage, until ^(HH)the day when Noah entered the ark, ³⁹ and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, ^(HI)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ⁴⁰ Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. ^41 (HJ)Two women will be grinding ^(HK)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. ⁴² Therefore, ^(HL)stay awake, for you do not know on what day ^(HM)your Lord is coming. ^43 (HN)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night ^(HO)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴ Therefore you also must be ^(HP)ready, for ^(HQ)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

⁴⁵ “Who then is ^(HR)the faithful and ^(HS)wise servant,^[l] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? ^46 (HT)Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ⁴⁷ Truly, I say to you, ^(HU)he will set him over all his possessions. ⁴⁸ But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master ^(HV)is delayed,’ ⁴⁹ and begins to beat his fellow servants^[m] and eats and drinks with ^(HW)drunkards, ⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come ^(HX)on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know ⁵¹ and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place ^(HY)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
