La preeminencia del amor
13 Si yo hablase lenguas humanas y angélicas, y no tengo amor, vengo a ser como metal que resuena, o címbalo que retiñe. 2 Y si tuviese profecía, y entendiese todos los misterios y toda ciencia, y si tuviese toda la fe, de tal manera que trasladase los montes,(A) y no tengo amor, nada soy. 3 Y si repartiese todos mis bienes para dar de comer a los pobres, y si entregase mi cuerpo para ser quemado, y no tengo amor, de nada me sirve.
4 El amor es sufrido, es benigno; el amor no tiene envidia, el amor no es jactancioso, no se envanece; 5 no hace nada indebido, no busca lo suyo, no se irrita, no guarda rencor; 6 no se goza de la injusticia, mas se goza de la verdad. 7 Todo lo sufre, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta.
8 El amor nunca deja de ser; pero las profecías se acabarán, y cesarán las lenguas, y la ciencia acabará. 9 Porque en parte conocemos, y en parte profetizamos; 10 mas cuando venga lo perfecto, entonces lo que es en parte se acabará. 11 Cuando yo era niño, hablaba como niño, pensaba como niño, juzgaba como niño; mas cuando ya fui hombre, dejé lo que era de niño. 12 Ahora vemos por espejo, oscuramente; mas entonces veremos cara a cara. Ahora conozco en parte; pero entonces conoceré como fui conocido. 13 Y ahora permanecen la fe, la esperanza y el amor, estos tres; pero el mayor de ellos es el amor.

13 If I speak in the tongues[a](A) of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy(B) and can fathom all mysteries(C) and all knowledge,(D) and if I have a faith(E) that can move mountains,(F) but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor(G) and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b](H) but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient,(I) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.(J) 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,(K) it is not easily angered,(L) it keeps no record of wrongs.(M) 6 Love does not delight in evil(N) but rejoices with the truth.(O) 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.(P)
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies,(Q) they will cease; where there are tongues,(R) they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part(S) and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes,(T) what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood(U) behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror;(V) then we shall see face to face.(W) Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.(X)
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.(Y) But the greatest of these is love.(Z)

El ministerio de los apóstoles
4 Así, pues, téngannos los hombres por servidores de Cristo, y administradores de los misterios de Dios. 2 Ahora bien, se requiere de los administradores, que cada uno sea hallado fiel. 3 Yo en muy poco tengo el ser juzgado por vosotros, o por tribunal humano; y ni aun yo me juzgo a mí mismo. 4 Porque aunque de nada tengo mala conciencia, no por eso soy justificado; pero el que me juzga es el Señor. 5 Así que, no juzguéis nada antes de tiempo, hasta que venga el Señor, el cual aclarará también lo oculto de las tinieblas, y manifestará las intenciones de los corazones; y entonces cada uno recibirá su alabanza de Dios.
6 Pero esto, hermanos, lo he presentado como ejemplo en mí y en Apolos por amor de vosotros, para que en nosotros aprendáis a no pensar más de lo que está escrito, no sea que por causa de uno, os envanezcáis unos contra otros. 7 Porque ¿quién te distingue? ¿o qué tienes que no hayas recibido? Y si lo recibiste, ¿por qué te glorías como si no lo hubieras recibido?
8 Ya estáis saciados, ya estáis ricos, sin nosotros reináis. ¡Y ojalá reinaseis, para que nosotros reinásemos también juntamente con vosotros! 9 Porque según pienso, Dios nos ha exhibido a nosotros los apóstoles como postreros, como a sentenciados a muerte; pues hemos llegado a ser espectáculo al mundo, a los ángeles y a los hombres. 10 Nosotros somos insensatos por amor de Cristo, mas vosotros prudentes en Cristo; nosotros débiles, mas vosotros fuertes; vosotros honorables, mas nosotros despreciados. 11 Hasta esta hora padecemos hambre, tenemos sed, estamos desnudos, somos abofeteados, y no tenemos morada fija. 12 Nos fatigamos trabajando con nuestras propias manos;(A) nos maldicen, y bendecimos; padecemos persecución, y la soportamos. 13 Nos difaman, y rogamos; hemos venido a ser hasta ahora como la escoria del mundo, el desecho de todos.
14 No escribo esto para avergonzaros, sino para amonestaros como a hijos míos amados. 15 Porque aunque tengáis diez mil ayos en Cristo, no tendréis muchos padres; pues en Cristo Jesús yo os engendré por medio del evangelio. 16 Por tanto, os ruego que me imitéis.(B) 17 Por esto mismo os he enviado a Timoteo, que es mi hijo amado y fiel en el Señor, el cual os recordará mi proceder en Cristo, de la manera que enseño en todas partes y en todas las iglesias. 18 Mas algunos están envanecidos, como si yo nunca hubiese de ir a vosotros. 19 Pero iré pronto a vosotros, si el Señor quiere, y conoceré, no las palabras, sino el poder de los que andan envanecidos. 20 Porque el reino de Dios no consiste en palabras, sino en poder. 21 ¿Qué queréis? ¿Iré a vosotros con vara, o con amor y espíritu de mansedumbre?
Un caso de inmoralidad juzgado
5 De cierto se oye que hay entre vosotros fornicación, y tal fornicación cual ni aun se nombra entre los gentiles; tanto que alguno tiene la mujer de su padre.(C) 2 Y vosotros estáis envanecidos. ¿No debierais más bien haberos lamentado, para que fuese quitado de en medio de vosotros el que cometió tal acción?
3 Ciertamente yo, como ausente en cuerpo, pero presente en espíritu, ya como presente he juzgado al que tal cosa ha hecho. 4 En el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, reunidos vosotros y mi espíritu, con el poder de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, 5 el tal sea entregado a Satanás para destrucción de la carne, a fin de que el espíritu sea salvo en el día del Señor Jesús.
6 No es buena vuestra jactancia. ¿No sabéis que un poco de levadura leuda toda la masa?(D) 7 Limpiaos, pues, de la vieja levadura, para que seáis nueva masa, sin levadura como sois; porque nuestra pascua,(E) que es Cristo, ya fue sacrificada por nosotros. 8 Así que celebremos la fiesta, no con la vieja levadura, ni con la levadura de malicia y de maldad, sino con panes sin levadura,(F) de sinceridad y de verdad.
9 Os he escrito por carta, que no os juntéis con los fornicarios; 10 no absolutamente con los fornicarios de este mundo, o con los avaros, o con los ladrones, o con los idólatras; pues en tal caso os sería necesario salir del mundo. 11 Más bien os escribí que no os juntéis con ninguno que, llamándose hermano, fuere fornicario, o avaro, o idólatra, o maldiciente, o borracho, o ladrón; con el tal ni aun comáis. 12 Porque ¿qué razón tendría yo para juzgar a los que están fuera? ¿No juzgáis vosotros a los que están dentro? 13 Porque a los que están fuera, Dios juzgará. Quitad, pues, a ese perverso de entre vosotros.
Litigios delante de los incrédulos
6 ¿Osa alguno de vosotros, cuando tiene algo contra otro, ir a juicio delante de los injustos, y no delante de los santos? 2 ¿O no sabéis que los santos han de juzgar al mundo? Y si el mundo ha de ser juzgado por vosotros, ¿sois indignos de juzgar cosas muy pequeñas? 3 ¿O no sabéis que hemos de juzgar a los ángeles? ¿Cuánto más las cosas de esta vida? 4 Si, pues, tenéis juicios sobre cosas de esta vida, ¿ponéis para juzgar a los que son de menor estima en la iglesia? 5 Para avergonzaros lo digo. ¿Pues qué, no hay entre vosotros sabio, ni aun uno, que pueda juzgar entre sus hermanos, 6 sino que el hermano con el hermano pleitea en juicio, y esto ante los incrédulos?
7 Así que, por cierto es ya una falta en vosotros que tengáis pleitos entre vosotros mismos. ¿Por qué no sufrís más bien el agravio? ¿Por qué no sufrís más bien el ser defraudados? 8 Pero vosotros cometéis el agravio, y defraudáis, y esto a los hermanos.
9 ¿No sabéis que los injustos no heredarán el reino de Dios? No erréis; ni los fornicarios, ni los idólatras, ni los adúlteros, ni los afeminados, ni los que se echan con varones, 10 ni los ladrones, ni los avaros, ni los borrachos, ni los maldicientes, ni los estafadores, heredarán el reino de Dios. 11 Y esto erais algunos; mas ya habéis sido lavados, ya habéis sido santificados, ya habéis sido justificados en el nombre del Señor Jesús, y por el Espíritu de nuestro Dios.
Glorificad a Dios en vuestro cuerpo
12 Todas las cosas me son lícitas, mas no todas convienen;(G) todas las cosas me son lícitas, mas yo no me dejaré dominar de ninguna. 13 Las viandas para el vientre, y el vientre para las viandas; pero tanto al uno como a las otras destruirá Dios. Pero el cuerpo no es para la fornicación, sino para el Señor, y el Señor para el cuerpo. 14 Y Dios, que levantó al Señor, también a nosotros nos levantará con su poder. 15 ¿No sabéis que vuestros cuerpos son miembros de Cristo? ¿Quitaré, pues, los miembros de Cristo y los haré miembros de una ramera? De ningún modo. 16 ¿O no sabéis que el que se une con una ramera, es un cuerpo con ella? Porque dice: Los dos serán una sola carne.(H) 17 Pero el que se une al Señor, un espíritu es con él. 18 Huid de la fornicación. Cualquier otro pecado que el hombre cometa, está fuera del cuerpo; mas el que fornica, contra su propio cuerpo peca. 19 ¿O ignoráis que vuestro cuerpo es templo del Espíritu Santo, el cual está en vosotros,(I) el cual tenéis de Dios, y que no sois vuestros? 20 Porque habéis sido comprados por precio; glorificad, pues, a Dios en vuestro cuerpo y en vuestro espíritu, los cuales son de Dios.
Problemas del matrimonio
7 En cuanto a las cosas de que me escribisteis, bueno le sería al hombre no tocar mujer; 2 pero a causa de las fornicaciones, cada uno tenga su propia mujer, y cada una tenga su propio marido. 3 El marido cumpla con la mujer el deber conyugal, y asimismo la mujer con el marido. 4 La mujer no tiene potestad sobre su propio cuerpo, sino el marido; ni tampoco tiene el marido potestad sobre su propio cuerpo, sino la mujer. 5 No os neguéis el uno al otro, a no ser por algún tiempo de mutuo consentimiento, para ocuparos sosegadamente en la oración; y volved a juntaros en uno, para que no os tiente Satanás a causa de vuestra incontinencia. 6 Mas esto digo por vía de concesión, no por mandamiento. 7 Quisiera más bien que todos los hombres fuesen como yo; pero cada uno tiene su propio don de Dios, uno a la verdad de un modo, y otro de otro.
8 Digo, pues, a los solteros y a las viudas, que bueno les fuera quedarse como yo; 9 pero si no tienen don de continencia, cásense, pues mejor es casarse que estarse quemando.
10 Pero a los que están unidos en matrimonio, mando, no yo, sino el Señor: Que la mujer no se separe del marido; 11 y si se separa, quédese sin casar, o reconcíliese con su marido; y que el marido no abandone a su mujer.(J)
12 Y a los demás yo digo, no el Señor: Si algún hermano tiene mujer que no sea creyente, y ella consiente en vivir con él, no la abandone. 13 Y si una mujer tiene marido que no sea creyente, y él consiente en vivir con ella, no lo abandone. 14 Porque el marido incrédulo es santificado en la mujer, y la mujer incrédula en el marido; pues de otra manera vuestros hijos serían inmundos, mientras que ahora son santos. 15 Pero si el incrédulo se separa, sepárese; pues no está el hermano o la hermana sujeto a servidumbre en semejante caso, sino que a paz nos llamó Dios. 16 Porque ¿qué sabes tú, oh mujer, si quizá harás salvo a tu marido? ¿O qué sabes tú, oh marido, si quizá harás salva a tu mujer?
17 Pero cada uno como el Señor le repartió, y como Dios llamó a cada uno, así haga; esto ordeno en todas las iglesias. 18 ¿Fue llamado alguno siendo circunciso? Quédese circunciso. ¿Fue llamado alguno siendo incircunciso? No se circuncide. 19 La circuncisión nada es, y la incircuncisión nada es, sino el guardar los mandamientos de Dios. 20 Cada uno en el estado en que fue llamado, en él se quede. 21 ¿Fuiste llamado siendo esclavo? No te dé cuidado; pero también, si puedes hacerte libre, procúralo más. 22 Porque el que en el Señor fue llamado siendo esclavo, liberto es del Señor; asimismo el que fue llamado siendo libre, esclavo es de Cristo. 23 Por precio fuisteis comprados; no os hagáis esclavos de los hombres. 24 Cada uno, hermanos, en el estado en que fue llamado, así permanezca para con Dios.
25 En cuanto a las vírgenes no tengo mandamiento del Señor; mas doy mi parecer, como quien ha alcanzado misericordia del Señor para ser fiel. 26 Tengo, pues, esto por bueno a causa de la necesidad que apremia; que hará bien el hombre en quedarse como está. 27 ¿Estás ligado a mujer? No procures soltarte. ¿Estás libre de mujer? No procures casarte. 28 Mas también si te casas, no pecas; y si la doncella se casa, no peca; pero los tales tendrán aflicción de la carne, y yo os la quisiera evitar. 29 Pero esto digo, hermanos: que el tiempo es corto; resta, pues, que los que tienen esposa sean como si no la tuviesen; 30 y los que lloran, como si no llorasen; y los que se alegran, como si no se alegrasen; y los que compran, como si no poseyesen; 31 y los que disfrutan de este mundo, como si no lo disfrutasen; porque la apariencia de este mundo se pasa.
32 Quisiera, pues, que estuvieseis sin congoja. El soltero tiene cuidado de las cosas del Señor, de cómo agradar al Señor; 33 pero el casado tiene cuidado de las cosas del mundo, de cómo agradar a su mujer. 34 Hay asimismo diferencia entre la casada y la doncella. La doncella tiene cuidado de las cosas del Señor, para ser santa así en cuerpo como en espíritu; pero la casada tiene cuidado de las cosas del mundo, de cómo agradar a su marido. 35 Esto lo digo para vuestro provecho; no para tenderos lazo, sino para lo honesto y decente, y para que sin impedimento os acerquéis al Señor.
36 Pero si alguno piensa que es impropio para su hija virgen que pase ya de edad, y es necesario que así sea, haga lo que quiera, no peca; que se case. 37 Pero el que está firme en su corazón, sin tener necesidad, sino que es dueño de su propia voluntad, y ha resuelto en su corazón guardar a su hija virgen, bien hace. 38 De manera que el que la da en casamiento hace bien, y el que no la da en casamiento hace mejor.
39 La mujer casada está ligada por la ley mientras su marido vive; pero si su marido muriere, libre es para casarse con quien quiera, con tal que sea en el Señor. 40 Pero a mi juicio, más dichosa será si se quedare así; y pienso que también yo tengo el Espíritu de Dios.
Lo sacrificado a los ídolos
8 En cuanto a lo sacrificado a los ídolos, sabemos que todos tenemos conocimiento. El conocimiento envanece, pero el amor edifica. 2 Y si alguno se imagina que sabe algo, aún no sabe nada como debe saberlo. 3 Pero si alguno ama a Dios, es conocido por él.
4 Acerca, pues, de las viandas que se sacrifican a los ídolos, sabemos que un ídolo nada es en el mundo, y que no hay más que un Dios. 5 Pues aunque haya algunos que se llamen dioses, sea en el cielo, o en la tierra (como hay muchos dioses y muchos señores), 6 para nosotros, sin embargo, solo hay un Dios, el Padre, del cual proceden todas las cosas, y nosotros somos para él; y un Señor, Jesucristo, por medio del cual son todas las cosas, y nosotros por medio de él.
7 Pero no en todos hay este conocimiento; porque algunos, habituados hasta aquí a los ídolos, comen como sacrificado a ídolos, y su conciencia, siendo débil, se contamina. 8 Si bien la vianda no nos hace más aceptos ante Dios; pues ni porque comamos, seremos más, ni porque no comamos, seremos menos. 9 Pero mirad que esta libertad vuestra no venga a ser tropezadero para los débiles. 10 Porque si alguno te ve a ti, que tienes conocimiento, sentado a la mesa en un lugar de ídolos, la conciencia de aquel que es débil, ¿no será estimulada a comer de lo sacrificado a los ídolos? 11 Y por el conocimiento tuyo, se perderá el hermano débil por quien Cristo murió. 12 De esta manera, pues, pecando contra los hermanos e hiriendo su débil conciencia, contra Cristo pecáis. 13 Por lo cual, si la comida le es a mi hermano ocasión de caer, no comeré carne jamás, para no poner tropiezo a mi hermano.

The Nature of True Apostleship
4 This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants(A) of Christ and as those entrusted(B) with the mysteries(C) God has revealed. 2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4 My conscience(D) is clear, but that does not make me innocent.(E) It is the Lord who judges me.(F) 5 Therefore judge nothing(G) before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.(H) He will bring to light(I) what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.(J)
6 Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.”(K) Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.(L) 7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive?(M) And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich!(N) You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! 9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die(O) in the arena. We have been made a spectacle(P) to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ,(Q) but you are so wise in Christ!(R) We are weak, but you are strong!(S) You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.(T) 12 We work hard with our own hands.(U) When we are cursed, we bless;(V) when we are persecuted,(W) we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage(X) of the world—right up to this moment.
Paul’s Appeal and Warning
14 I am writing this not to shame you(Y) but to warn you as my dear children.(Z) 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father(AA) through the gospel.(AB) 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me.(AC) 17 For this reason I have sent to you(AD) Timothy,(AE) my son(AF) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(AG)
18 Some of you have become arrogant,(AH) as if I were not coming to you.(AI) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(AJ) if the Lord is willing,(AK) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(AL) talk but of power.(AM) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(AN) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?
Dealing With a Case of Incest
5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(AO) 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(AP) and have put out of your fellowship(AQ) the man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(AR) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(AS) on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over(AT) to Satan(AU) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(AV)
6 Your boasting is not good.(AW) Don’t you know that a little yeast(AX) leavens the whole batch of dough?(AY) 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(AZ) 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(BA) of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(BB) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(BC) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](BD) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(BE) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(BF)
12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(BG) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(BH) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](BI)
Lawsuits Among Believers
6 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?(BJ) 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?(BK) And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5 I say this to shame you.(BL) Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?(BM) 6 But instead, one brother(BN) takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!(BO)
7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?(BP) 8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.(BQ) 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?(BR) Do not be deceived:(BS) Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers(BT) nor men who have sex with men[e](BU) 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers(BV) will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were.(BW) But you were washed,(BX) you were sanctified,(BY) you were justified(BZ) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Sexual Immorality
12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(CA) “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”(CB) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,(CC) and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,(CD) and he will raise us also.(CE) 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?(CF) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[f](CG) 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[g](CH)
18 Flee from sexual immorality.(CI) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.(CJ) 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples(CK) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(CL) 20 you were bought at a price.(CM) Therefore honor God with your bodies.(CN)
Concerning Married Life
7 Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”(CO) 2 But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. 3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,(CP) and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time,(CQ) so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan(CR) will not tempt you(CS) because of your lack of self-control. 6 I say this as a concession, not as a command.(CT) 7 I wish that all of you were as I am.(CU) But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.(CV)
8 Now to the unmarried[h] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.(CW) 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry,(CX) for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.(CY) 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband.(CZ) And a husband must not divorce his wife.
12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord):(DA) If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.(DB)
15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.(DC) 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save(DD) your husband?(DE) Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
Concerning Change of Status
17 Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.(DF) This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.(DG) 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised.(DH) 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.(DI) Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20 Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(DJ)
21 Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22 For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person;(DK) similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave.(DL) 23 You were bought at a price;(DM) do not become slaves of human beings. 24 Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(DN)
Concerning the Unmarried
25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord,(DO) but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy(DP) is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.(DQ) 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.(DR) 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned;(DS) and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.(DT) From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.(DU)
32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs(DV)—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.(DW) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided(DX) devotion to the Lord.
36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[i] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning.(DY) They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right,(DZ) but he who does not marry her does better.[j]
39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.(EA) But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.(EB) 40 In my judgment,(EC) she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols
8 Now about food sacrificed to idols:(ED) We know that “We all possess knowledge.”(EE) But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something(EF) do not yet know as they ought to know.(EG) 3 But whoever loves God is known by God.[k](EH)
4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols:(EI) We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world”(EJ) and that “There is no God but one.”(EK) 5 For even if there are so-called gods,(EL) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God,(EM) the Father,(EN) from whom all things came(EO) and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord,(EP) Jesus Christ, through whom all things came(EQ) and through whom we live.
7 But not everyone possesses this knowledge.(ER) Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak,(ES) it is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us near to God;(ET) we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block(EU) to the weak.(EV) 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?(EW) 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed(EX) by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them(EY) in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.(EZ) 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.(FA)
