Un cas d’inceste
5 On entend dire partout qu’il y a de l’immoralité parmi vous, et une immoralité telle qu’il ne s’en rencontre même pas chez les païens : l’un de vous vit avec la deuxième femme de son père[a] !
2 Et vous vous en vantez encore ! Vous devriez au contraire en être vivement affligés et faire en sorte que l’auteur d’un tel acte soit exclu du milieu de vous. 3-4 Pour moi, qui suis absent de corps, mais présent en pensée parmi vous, j’ai déjà, comme si j’étais présent, prononcé la sentence au nom du Seigneur Jésus contre celui qui a commis cette faute. Lorsque vous serez réunis, et que je serai présent parmi vous en pensée, appliquez cette sentence dans la puissance de notre Seigneur Jésus : 5 qu’un tel homme soit livré à Satan[b] en vue de la destruction du mal qui est en lui afin qu’il soit sauvé au jour du Seigneur[c].
6 Ah ! vous n’avez vraiment pas de quoi vous vanter ! Ne savez-vous pas qu’« il suffit d’un peu de levain pour faire lever toute la pâte » ? 7 Faites donc disparaître tout « vieux levain » du milieu de vous afin que vous soyez comme « une pâte toute nouvelle », puisque, en fait, vous êtes « sans levain ». Car nous avons un agneau pascal qui a été sacrifié pour nous, Christ lui-même[d]. 8 C’est pourquoi célébrons la fête de la Pâque, non plus avec le « vieux levain », le levain du mal et de la méchanceté, mais uniquement avec les pains sans levain de la pureté et de la vérité.
9 Dans ma dernière lettre[e], je vous ai écrit de ne pas avoir de relations avec des personnes vivant dans l’immoralité sexuelle. 10 Mais je ne voulais évidemment pas dire par là qu’il faut éviter toute relation avec ceux qui, dans ce monde, mènent une vie sexuelle immorale, ou avec les avares, les voleurs ou les adorateurs d’idoles ; car alors il vous faudrait sortir du monde.
11 Non, je voulais simplement vous dire de ne pas entretenir de relations avec une personne qui, tout en se disant votre « frère » ou votre « sœur », vivrait dans l’immoralité sexuelle, ou serait avare, idolâtre, calomniateur, adonné à la boisson ou voleur. Avec des gens de cette sorte, il ne vous faut même pas prendre de repas.
12 Est-ce à moi de juger ceux qui vivent en dehors de la famille de Dieu ? Certes non ! Mais c’est bien à vous de juger ceux qui font partie de votre communauté. 13 Ceux du dehors, Dieu les jugera. Mais vous, chassez le méchant du milieu de vous[f].

5 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Immorality Defiles the Church

Immorality Must Be Judged
9 I wrote to you in my epistle (P)not to [f]keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go (Q)out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company (R)with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—(S)not even to eat with such a person.
12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore (T)“put away from yourselves the evil person.”

Wickedness in the Church
5 It is actually being said that there is sexual sin among you. And it is a kind that does not happen even among people who do not know God. A man there has his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! You should have been filled with sadness so that the man who did this should be put out of your group. 3 I am not there with you in person, but I am with you in spirit. And I have already judged the man who did that sin as if I were really there. 4 When you meet together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I meet with you in spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 then hand this man over to Satan. So his sinful self[a] will be destroyed, and his spirit will be saved on the day of the Lord.
6 Your bragging is not good. You know the saying, “Just a little yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise.” 7 Take out all the old yeast so that you will be a new batch of dough without yeast, which you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 So let us celebrate this feast, but not with the bread that has the old yeast—the yeast of sin and wickedness. Let us celebrate this feast with the bread that has no yeast—the bread of goodness and truth.
9 I wrote you in my earlier letter not to associate with those who sin sexually. 10 But I did not mean you should not associate with those of this world who sin sexually, or with the greedy, or robbers, or those who worship idols. To get away from them you would have to leave this world. 11 I am writing to tell you that you must not associate with those who call themselves believers in Christ but who sin sexually, or are greedy, or worship idols, or abuse others with words, or get drunk, or cheat people. Do not even eat with people like that.
12-13 It is not my business to judge those who are not part of the church. God will judge them. But you must judge the people who are part of the church. The Scripture says, “You must get rid of the evil person among you.”[b]
