² For ^(A)one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

⁴⁶ For they were hearing them ^(A)speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,

¹⁷ And ^(A)these signs will accompany those who believe: ^(B)in my name they will cast out demons; ^(C)they will speak in new tongues;

⁶ And ^(A)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and ^(B)they began speaking in tongues and ^(C)prophesying.

¹⁸ I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. ¹⁹ Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

²⁰ Brothers, ^(A)do not be children in your thinking. ^(B)Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be ^(C)mature. ^21 (D)In the Law it is written, ^(E)“By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” ²² Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign^[a] not for unbelievers but for believers. ²³ If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, ^(F)will they not say that you are out of your minds?

² And if I have ^(A)prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, ^(B)so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

⁴ And they were all ^(A)filled with the Holy Spirit and began ^(B)to speak in other tongues ^(C)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

⁵ Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. ⁶ And ^(D)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. ⁷ And ^(E)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking ^(F)Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? ⁹ Parthians and ^(G)Medes and ^(H)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, ¹¹ both Jews and ^(I)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

⁷ but that ^(A)in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, ^(B)just as he announced to his servants the prophets.
