Instructions for the Church

(A)Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, (B)younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows (C)who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn (D)to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for (E)this is pleasing in the sight of God. She (F)who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and (G)continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but (H)she who is self-indulgent is (I)dead even while she lives. (J)Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for (K)members of his household, he has (L)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been (M)the wife of one husband,[a] 10 and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has (N)shown hospitality, (O)has washed the feet of the saints, has (P)cared for the afflicted, and has (Q)devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when (R)their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry 12 and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith. 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also (S)gossips and (T)busybodies, saying what they should not. 14 So I would have (U)younger widows marry, bear children, (V)manage their households, and (W)give the adversary no occasion for slander. 15 (X)For some have already strayed after Satan. 16 If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those (Y)who are truly widows.

17 Let the elders (Z)who rule well be considered worthy of (AA)double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, (AB)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, (AC)“The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except (AD)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, (AE)rebuke them in the presence of all, (AF)so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels (AG)I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, (AH)doing nothing from partiality. 22 (AI)Do not be hasty in the (AJ)laying on of hands, nor (AK)take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 23 (No longer drink only water, but (AL)use a little wine (AM)for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.) 24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and (AN)even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

(AO)Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants[b] regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, (AP)so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are (AQ)brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

(AR)Teach and urge these things. If anyone (AS)teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with (AT)the sound[c] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching (AU)that accords with godliness, (AV)he is puffed up with conceit and (AW)understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for (AX)controversy and for (AY)quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people (AZ)who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, (BA)imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But (BB)godliness (BC)with contentment is great gain, for (BD)we brought nothing into the world, and[d] we cannot take anything out of the world. But (BE)if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But (BF)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, (BG)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that (BH)plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of (BI)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, (BJ)O man of God, (BK)flee these things. (BL)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 (BM)Fight the good fight of the faith. (BN)Take hold of the eternal life (BO)to which you were called and about which you made (BP)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 (BQ)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, (BR)who in his testimony before[e] Pontius Pilate made (BS)the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until (BT)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display (BU)at the proper time—he who is (BV)the blessed and only Sovereign, (BW)the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 (BX)who alone has immortality, (BY)who dwells in (BZ)unapproachable light, (CA)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in (CB)this present age, charge them (CC)not to be haughty, nor (CD)to set their hopes on (CE)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (CF)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, (CG)to be rich in good works, to be generous and (CH)ready to share, 19 thus (CI)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may (CJ)take hold of (CK)that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. (CL)Avoid the (CM)irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

(CN)Grace be with you.[f]

Greeting

Paul, (CO)an apostle of Christ Jesus (CP)by the will of God according to (CQ)the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, (CR)my beloved child:

(CS)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

(CT)I thank God (CU)whom I serve, as did my ancestors, (CV)with a clear conscience, as I remember you (CW)constantly in my prayers night and day. (CX)As I remember your tears, (CY)I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of (CZ)your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and (DA)your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you (DB)to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us (DC)a spirit not of fear but (DD)of power and love and self-control.

Therefore (DE)do not be ashamed of (DF)the testimony about our Lord, nor of (DG)me his prisoner, but (DH)share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, (DI)who saved us and (DJ)called us to[g] a holy calling, (DK)not because of our works but because of (DL)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus (DM)before the ages began,[h] 10 and which now has (DN)been manifested through (DO)the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, (DP)who abolished death and (DQ)brought life and (DR)immortality to light through the gospel, 11 (DS)for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 (DT)which is why I suffer as I do. But (DU)I am not ashamed, for (DV)I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until (DW)that day (DX)what has been entrusted to me.[i] 13 (DY)Follow (DZ)the pattern of (EA)the sound[j] words (EB)that you have heard from me, in (EC)the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit (ED)who dwells within us, guard (EE)the good deposit entrusted to you.

15 You are aware that (EF)all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to (EG)the household of Onesiphorus, for he often (EH)refreshed me and was not ashamed of (EI)my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome (EJ)he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on (EK)that day!—and you well know all the service he (EL)rendered at Ephesus.

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus

You then, (EM)my child, (EN)be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and (EO)what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses (EP)entrust to faithful men,[k] (EQ)who will be able to teach others also. (ER)Share in suffering as (ES)a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier (ET)gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. (EU)An athlete is not (EV)crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is (EW)the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, (EX)risen from the dead, the (EY)offspring of David, (EZ)as preached in my gospel, (FA)for which I am suffering, (FB)bound with chains as a criminal. But (FC)the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore (FD)I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain (FE)the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with (FF)eternal glory. 11 The saying is (FG)trustworthy, for:

(FH)If we have died with him, we will also (FI)live with him;
12 (FJ)if we endure, we will also reign with him;
(FK)if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 (FL)if we are faithless, (FM)he remains faithful—

for (FN)he cannot deny himself.

A Worker Approved by God

14 Remind them of these things, and (FO)charge them before God[l] (FP)not to quarrel about words, (FQ)which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,[m] a worker (FR)who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But (FS)avoid (FT)irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are (FU)Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, (FV)saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: (FW)“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone (FX)who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

20 Now in (FY)a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, (FZ)some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, (GA)if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable,[n] he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, (GB)ready for every good work.

22 So (GC)flee (GD)youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with (GE)those who call on the Lord (GF)from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant (GG)controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And (GH)the Lord's servant[o] must not be quarrelsome but (GI)kind to everyone, (GJ)able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents (GK)with gentleness. God (GL)may perhaps grant them repentance (GM)leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (GN)the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

Widows, Elders and Slaves

Do not rebuke an older man(A) harshly,(B) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(C) as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(D) But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(E) for this is pleasing to God.(F) The widow who is really in need(G) and left all alone puts her hope in God(H) and continues night and day to pray(I) and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(J) Give the people these instructions,(K) so that no one may be open to blame. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(L) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(M) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(N) washing the feet(O) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(P) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.

11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(Q) who talk nonsense,(R) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(S) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(T) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(U)

16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(V)

17 The elders(W) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(X) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a](Y) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b](Z) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(AA) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(AB) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(AC) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(AD) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(AE) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(AF) and do not share in the sins of others.(AG) Keep yourself pure.(AH)

23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(AI) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect,(AJ) so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.(AK) Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers.(AL) Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[c] of their slaves.

False Teachers and the Love of Money

These are the things you are to teach and insist on.(AM) If anyone teaches otherwise(AN) and does not agree to the sound instruction(AO) of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited(AP) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(AQ) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(AR) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But godliness with contentment(AS) is great gain.(AT) For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(AU) But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(AV) Those who want to get rich(AW) fall into temptation and a trap(AX) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(AY) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(AZ) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(BA)

Final Charge to Timothy

11 But you, man of God,(BB) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(BC) faith, love,(BD) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(BE) of the faith. Take hold of(BF) the eternal life(BG) to which you were called when you made your good confession(BH) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(BI) made the good confession,(BJ) I charge you(BK) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(BL) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(BM) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(BN)—God, the blessed(BO) and only Ruler,(BP) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(BQ) 16 who alone is immortal(BR) and who lives in unapproachable light,(BS) whom no one has seen or can see.(BT) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(BU)

17 Command those who are rich(BV) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(BW) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(BX) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(BY) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(BZ) and to be generous and willing to share.(CA) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(CB) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(CC) the life that is truly life.

20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted(CD) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter(CE) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.(CF)

Grace be with you all.(CG)

Paul, an apostle(CH) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(CI) in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,(CJ)

To Timothy,(CK) my dear son:(CL)

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(CM)

Thanksgiving

I thank God,(CN) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,(CO) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.(CP) Recalling your tears,(CQ) I long to see you,(CR) so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith,(CS) which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice(CT) and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.(CU) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,(CV) but gives us power,(CW) love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed(CX) of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner.(CY) Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel,(CZ) by the power of God. He has saved(DA) us and called(DB) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done(DC) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed(DD) through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus,(DE) who has destroyed death(DF) and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel(DG) I was appointed(DH) a herald and an apostle and a teacher.(DI) 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,(DJ) because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard(DK) what I have entrusted to him until that day.(DL)

13 What you heard from me,(DM) keep(DN) as the pattern(DO) of sound teaching,(DP) with faith and love in Christ Jesus.(DQ) 14 Guard(DR) the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.(DS)

Examples of Disloyalty and Loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia(DT) has deserted me,(DU) including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,(DV) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed(DW) of my chains.(DX) 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day!(DY) You know very well in how many ways he helped me(DZ) in Ephesus.(EA)

The Appeal Renewed

You then, my son,(EB) be strong(EC) in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say(ED) in the presence of many witnesses(EE) entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering,(EF) like a good soldier(EG) of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown(EH) except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.(EI) Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,(EJ) descended from David.(EK) This is my gospel,(EL) for which I am suffering(EM) even to the point of being chained(EN) like a criminal. But God’s word(EO) is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything(EP) for the sake of the elect,(EQ) that they too may obtain the salvation(ER) that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.(ES)

11 Here is a trustworthy saying:(ET)

If we died with him,
    we will also live with him;(EU)
12 if we endure,
    we will also reign with him.(EV)
If we disown him,
    he will also disown us;(EW)
13 if we are faithless,
    he remains faithful,(EX)
    for he cannot disown himself.

Dealing With False Teachers

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;(EY) it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.(EZ) 16 Avoid godless chatter,(FA) because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus(FB) and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,(FC) and they destroy the faith of some.(FD) 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm,(FE) sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”(FF) and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord(FG) must turn away from wickedness.”

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.(FH) 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.(FI)

22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love(FJ) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord(FK) out of a pure heart.(FL) 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.(FM) 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.(FN) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,(FO) 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,(FP) who has taken them captive to do his will.
