Encouragement of Timothy’s Visit

Therefore, (A)when we could no longer endure it, we thought it best to be left behind, alone at (B)Athens, and we sent (C)Timothy, our brother and God’s fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you for the benefit of your faith, so that no one would be [a]disturbed by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that (D)we have been destined for this. For even when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction; [b](E)and so it happened, [c]as you know. For this reason, (F)when I could no longer endure it, I also (G)sent to [d]find out about your faith, for fear that (H)the tempter might have tempted you, and (I)our labor would be for nothing.

But now that (J)Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of (K)your faith and love, and that you always (L)think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you, for this reason, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith; for now we really live, if you (M)stand firm in the Lord. For (N)what thanks can we give to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice because of you before our God, 10 as we (O)keep praying most earnestly night and day that we may (P)see your faces, and may (Q)complete what is lacking in your faith?

11 (R)Now may (S)our God and Father (T)Himself, and our Lord Jesus, (U)direct our way to you; 12 and may the Lord cause you to increase and (V)overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; 13 so that He may (W)establish your hearts (X)blameless in holiness before (Y)our God and Father at the [e](Z)coming of our Lord Jesus (AA)with all His [f]saints.

Sanctification and Love

(AB)Finally then, (AC)brothers and sisters, we request and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received instruction from us as to how you ought to [g](AD)walk and (AE)please God (just as you actually do [h]walk), that you (AF)excel even more. For you know what instructions we gave you [i]by the authority of the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you (AG)abstain from sexual immorality; that (AH)each of you know how to [j]possess his own [k](AI)vessel in sanctification and (AJ)honor, not in [l](AK)lustful passion, like the Gentiles who (AL)do not know God; and that no one violate the rights and (AM)take advantage of his brother or sister (AN)in the matter, because (AO)the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also (AP)told you previously and solemnly warned you. For (AQ)God has not called us for [m](AR)impurity, but in sanctification. Therefore, the one who rejects this is not rejecting man, but the God who (AS)gives His Holy Spirit to you.

Now as to the (AT)love of the brothers and sisters, you (AU)have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are (AV)taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed (AW)you practice it toward all the brothers and sisters who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to (AX)excel even more, 11 and to make it your ambition (AY)to lead a quiet life and (AZ)attend to your own business and (BA)work with your hands, just as we instructed you, 12 so that you will [n](BB)behave properly toward (BC)outsiders and [o](BD)not be in any need.

Those Who Died in Christ

13 But (BE)we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who [p](BF)are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed (BG)the rest of mankind do, who have (BH)no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, (BI)so also God will bring with Him (BJ)those who have fallen asleep [q]through Jesus. 15 For we say this to you (BK)by the word of the Lord, that (BL)we who are alive [r]and remain until (BM)the coming of the Lord will not precede (BN)those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord (BO)Himself (BP)will descend from heaven with a [s](BQ)shout, with the voice of (BR)the archangel and with the (BS)trumpet of God, and (BT)the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then (BU)we who are alive, who remain, will be (BV)caught up together with them (BW)in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always (BX)be with the Lord. 18 Therefore, [t]comfort one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

Now as to the (BY)periods and [u]times, brothers and sisters, you (BZ)have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that (CA)the day of the Lord is coming (CB)just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, “(CC)Peace and safety!” then (CD)sudden destruction [v]will come upon them like (CE)labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in (CF)darkness, so that the day would overtake you [w](CG)like a thief; for you are all (CH)sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of (CI)darkness; so then, let’s not (CJ)sleep as [x](CK)others do, but let’s be alert and [y](CL)sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, (CM)get drunk at night. But since (CN)we are of the day, let’s (CO)be [z]sober, having put on the (CP)breastplate of (CQ)faith and love, and as a (CR)helmet, the (CS)hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for (CT)wrath, but for (CU)obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (CV)who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11 Therefore, [aa]encourage one another and (CW)build one another up, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

12 But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to (CX)recognize those (CY)who diligently labor among you and [ab](CZ)are in leadership over you in the Lord, and give you [ac]instruction, 13 and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. (DA)Live in peace with one another. 14 We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish (DB)the [ad]unruly, encourage (DC)the fainthearted, help (DD)the weak, be (DE)patient with everyone. 15 See that (DF)no one repays another with evil for evil, but always (DG)seek what is good for one another and for all people. 16 (DH)Rejoice always, 17 (DI)pray without ceasing, 18 in everything (DJ)give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 19 (DK)Do not quench the Spirit, 20 do not utterly reject [ae](DL)prophecies, 21 but (DM)examine everything; (DN)hold firmly to that which is good, 22 abstain from every [af]form of evil.

23 Now (DO)may the God of peace (DP)Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your (DQ)spirit and soul and body be kept complete, (DR)without blame at (DS)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 (DT)Faithful is He who (DU)calls you, and He also will do it.

25 Brothers and sisters, (DV)pray for us[ag].

26 (DW)Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 27 I put you under oath by the Lord to (DX)have this letter read to all the (DY)brothers and sisters.

28 (DZ)May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Giving Thanks for Faith and Perseverance

(EA)Paul, (EB)Silvanus, and (EC)Timothy,

To the (ED)church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: (EE)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We ought always (EF)to give thanks to God for you, (EG)brothers and sisters, as is only fitting, because your faith is increasing abundantly, and the (EH)love of each and every one of you toward one another grows ever greater. As a result, we ourselves (EI)speak proudly of you among (EJ)the churches of God for your [ah]perseverance and faith [ai](EK)in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure. This is [aj]a (EL)plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be (EM)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you indeed are suffering. [ak]For after all (EN)it is only right [al]for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us, [am](EO)when the Lord Jesus will be revealed (EP)from heaven (EQ)with [an]His mighty angels (ER)in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who (ES)do not know God, and to those who (ET)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These people will pay the penalty of (EU)eternal destruction, (EV)away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be (EW)glorified among His [ao]saints on that (EX)day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—because our (EY)testimony to you was believed. 11 To this end also we (EZ)pray for you always, that our God will (FA)consider you worthy of your (FB)calling, and fulfill every desire for (FC)goodness and the (FD)work of faith with power, 12 so that the (FE)name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, in accordance with the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Man of Lawlessness

Now we ask you, (FF)brothers and sisters, regarding the [ap](FG)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (FH)gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your [aq]composure or be disturbed either by a (FI)spirit, or a [ar](FJ)message, or a (FK)letter as if from us, to the effect that (FL)the day of the Lord (FM)has come. (FN)No one is to deceive you in any way! For it will not come unless the [as](FO)apostasy comes first, and the (FP)man of lawlessness is revealed, the (FQ)son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above [at](FR)every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (FS)displaying himself as being God. Do you not remember that (FT)while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know (FU)what restrains him now, so that he will be revealed in his time. For (FV)the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only [au](FW)He who now restrains will do so until [av]He is [aw]removed. Then that lawless one (FX)will be revealed, whom the Lord will eliminate (FY)with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the (FZ)appearance of His [ax]coming; that is, the one whose [ay]coming is in accord with the activity of (GA)Satan, with all power and false [az](GB)signs and wonders, 10 and with [ba]all the deception of wickedness for (GC)those who perish, because they did not accept the love of (GD)the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason (GE)God [bb]will send upon them [bc]a (GF)deluding influence so that they will believe [bd]what is false, 12 in order that they all may be [be]judged who (GG)did not believe the truth, but [bf](GH)took pleasure in wickedness.

Stand Firm

13 (GI)But we should always give thanks to God for you, (GJ)brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because (GK)God has chosen you [bg]from the beginning (GL)for salvation [bh](GM)through sanctification [bi]by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He (GN)called you through (GO)our gospel, [bj]that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers and sisters, (GP)stand firm and (GQ)hold on to the traditions which you were taught, whether (GR)by word of mouth or (GS)by letter [bk]from us.

16 (GT)Now may our Lord Jesus Christ (GU)Himself and God our Father, who has (GV)loved us and given us eternal comfort and (GW)good hope by grace, 17 (GX)comfort and (GY)strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

Request for Prayer

(GZ)Finally, brothers and sisters, (HA)pray for us that (HB)the word of the Lord will [bl]spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it was also with you; and that we will be (HC)rescued from troublesome and evil people; for not all have the faith. But (HD)the Lord is faithful, [bm]and He will strengthen and protect you [bn]from (HE)the evil one. We have (HF)confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you (HG)are doing, and will do, what we command. May the Lord (HH)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the perseverance of Christ.

Now we command you, brothers and sisters, (HI)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you [bo](HJ)keep away from every brother or sister who [bp]leads a [bq](HK)disorderly life and not one in accordance with (HL)the tradition which [br]you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to [bs](HM)follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined way among you, nor did we (HN)eat [bt]anyone’s bread [bu]without paying for it, but with (HO)labor and hardship we kept (HP)working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you; not because we do not have (HQ)the right to this, but in order to offer ourselves (HR)as a role model for you, so that you would [bv]follow our example. 10 For even (HS)when we were with you, we used to give you this order: (HT)if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are (HU)leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like (HV)busybodies. 12 Now we command and (HW)exhort such persons in the Lord Jesus Christ to (HX)work [bw]peacefully and eat their own bread. 13 But as for you, (HY)brothers and sisters, (HZ)do not grow weary of doing good.

14 If anyone does not obey our [bx]instruction [by](IA)in this letter, take special note of that person so as (IB)not to associate with him, so that he will be (IC)put to shame. 15 And yet (ID)do not regard that person as an enemy, but [bz](IE)admonish that one as a (IF)brother or sister.

16 Now (IG)may the Lord of peace (IH)Himself continually grant you peace in every [ca]circumstance. (II)The Lord be with you all!

17 [cb]I, Paul, write this greeting (IJ)with my own hand, and this is a distinguishing mark in every letter; this is the way I write. 18 (IK)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Encouragement of Timothy’s Visit

Therefore, when we could no longer endure our separation [from you], we thought it best to be left behind, alone at Athens, and so we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s servant in [spreading] the good news of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you [exhorting, comforting, and establishing you] in regard to your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these difficulties [to which I have referred]. For you know that we have been destined for this [as something unavoidable in our position]. For even when we were with you, we warned you plainly in advance that we were going to experience persecution; and so, as you know, it has come to pass. For this reason, when I could no longer endure the suspense, I sent someone to find out about your faith [how you were holding up under pressure], for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our work [among you] would prove to be ineffective.

But now that Timothy has come back to us from [his visit with] you, and has brought us good news of your [steadfast] faith and [the warmth of your] love, and [reported] that you always think kindly of us and treasure your memories of us, longing to see us just as we long to see you, for this reason, brothers and sisters, during all our distress and suffering we have been comforted and greatly encouraged about you because of your faith [your unwavering trust in God—placing yourselves completely in His loving hands]; because now we really live [in spite of everything], if you stand firm in the Lord. For what [adequate] thanks can we offer to God for you in return for all the joy and delight we have before our God on your account? 10 We continue to pray night and day most earnestly that we may see you face to face, and may complete whatever may be imperfect and lacking in your faith.

11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and Jesus our Lord guide our steps to you [by removing the obstacles that stand in our way]. 12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and excel and overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; 13 so that He may strengthen and establish your hearts without blame in holiness in the sight of our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His [a]saints (God’s people).

Sanctification and Love

Finally, believers, we ask and admonish you in the Lord Jesus, that you follow the instruction that you received from us about how you ought to walk and please God (just as you are actually doing) and that you excel even more and more [pursuing a life of purpose and living in a way that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation]. For you know what commandments and precepts we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, that you be sanctified [separated and set apart from sin]: that you abstain and back away from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor [being available for God’s purpose and separated from things profane], not [to be used] in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God and are ignorant of His will; and that [in this matter of sexual misconduct] no man shall transgress and defraud his brother because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we have told you before and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness [to be dedicated, and set apart by behavior that pleases Him, whether in public or in private]. So whoever rejects and disregards this is not [merely] rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you [to dwell in you and empower you to overcome temptation].

Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write you, for you have been [personally] taught by God to love one another [that is, to have an unselfish concern for others and to do things for their benefit].(A) 10 For indeed you already do practice it toward all the [b]believers throughout Macedonia [by actively displaying your love and concern for them]. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, that you excel [in this matter] more and more, 11 and to make it your ambition to live quietly and peacefully, and to mind your own affairs and work with your hands, just as we directed you, 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders [exhibiting good character, personal integrity, and moral courage worthy of the respect of the outside world], and be dependent on no one and in need of nothing [be self-supporting].

Those Who Died in Christ

13 Now we do not want you to be uninformed, believers, about those who are asleep [in death], so that you will not grieve [for them] as the others do who have no hope [beyond this present life]. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again [as in fact He did], even so God [in this same way—by raising them from the dead] will bring with Him those [believers] who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15 For we say this to you by the Lord’s [own] word, that we who are still alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede [into His presence] those [believers] who have fallen asleep [in death]. 16 For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the [c]archangel and with the [blast of the] trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain [on the earth] will simultaneously be caught up (raptured) together with them [the resurrected ones] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord!(B) 18 Therefore comfort and encourage one another with these words [concerning our reunion with believers who have died].

The Day of the Lord

Now as to the [d]times and dates, [e]brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know perfectly well that the day of the [return of the] Lord is coming just as a thief [comes unexpectedly and suddenly] in the night. While they are saying, “Peace and safety [all is well and secure!]” then [in a moment unforeseen] destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains on a woman with child, and they will absolutely not escape [for there will be no way to escape the judgment of the Lord]. But you, [f]believers, [all you who believe in Christ as Savior and acknowledge Him as God’s Son] are not in spiritual darkness [nor held by its power], that the day [of judgment] would overtake you [by surprise] like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We do not belong to the night nor to darkness. So then let us not sleep [in spiritual indifference] as the rest [of the world does], but let us keep wide awake [alert and cautious] and let us be sober [self-controlled, calm, and wise]. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we [believers] belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope and confident assurance of salvation. For God has not destined us to [incur His] wrath [that is, He did not select us to condemn us], but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died [willingly] for us, so that whether we are awake (alive) or asleep (dead) [at Christ’s appearing], we will live together with Him [sharing eternal life]. 11 Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.

Christian Conduct

12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to appreciate those who diligently work among you [recognize, acknowledge, and respect your leaders], who are in charge over you in the Lord and who give you instruction, 13 and [we ask that you appreciate them and] hold them in the highest esteem in love because of their work [on your behalf]. Live in peace with one another. 14 We [earnestly] urge you, believers, admonish those who are out of line [the undisciplined, the unruly, the disorderly], encourage the timid [who lack spiritual courage], help the [spiritually] weak, be very patient with everyone [always controlling your temper].(C) 15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 Rejoice always and delight in your faith; 17 be unceasing and persistent in prayer; 18 in every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit. 20 Do not scorn or reject gifts of prophecy or prophecies [spoken revelations—words of instruction or exhortation or warning]. 21 But test [g]all things carefully [so you can recognize what is good]. Hold firmly to that which is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil [withdraw and keep away from it].

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged—consecrated to Him—set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful and absolutely trustworthy is He who is calling you [to Himself for your salvation], and He will do it [He will fulfill His call by making you holy, guarding you, watching over you, and protecting you as His own].

25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

26 Greet all the believers with a holy [h]kiss [as brothers and sisters in God’s family]. 27 I solemnly charge you by the Lord to have this letter read before all the [i]congregation.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Thanksgiving for Faith and Perseverance

Paul, Silvanus (Silas), and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We ought always and indeed are morally obligated [as those in debt] to give thanks to God for you, [j]brothers and sisters, as is fitting, because your faith is growing ever greater, and the [unselfish] [k]love of each one of you toward one another is continually increasing. Therefore, we speak of you with pride among the churches of God for your steadfastness [your unflinching endurance, and patience] and your firm faith in the midst of all the persecution and [crushing] distress which you endure. This is a positive proof of the righteous judgment of God [a sign of His fair verdict], so that you will be considered worthy of His kingdom, for which indeed you are suffering. For after all it is only just for God to repay with distress those who distress you, and to give relief to you who are so distressed and to us as well when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in a flame of fire, dealing out [full and complete] vengeance to those who do not [seek to] know God and to those who ignore and refuse to obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus [by choosing not to respond to Him]. These people will pay the penalty and endure the punishment of [l]everlasting destruction, banished from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day [that is, glorified through the changed lives of those who have accepted Him as Savior and have been set apart for His purpose], and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed and trusted [and confirmed in your lives]. 11 With this in view, we constantly pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of your calling [to faith] and with [His] power fulfill every desire for goodness, and complete [your] every work of faith, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you [by what you do], and you in Him, according to the [precious] grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Man of Lawlessness

Now in regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our [m]gathering together to meet Him, we ask you, [n]brothers and sisters,(D) not to be quickly unsettled or alarmed either by a [so-called prophetic revelation of a] spirit or a message or a letter [alleged to be] from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has [already] come. Let no one in any way deceive or entrap you, for that day will not come unless the [o]apostasy comes first [that is, the great rebellion, the abandonment of the faith by professed Christians], and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction [the Antichrist, the one who is destined to be destroyed],(E) who opposes and exalts himself [so proudly and so insolently] above [p]every so-called god or object of worship, so that he [actually enters and] takes his seat in the temple of God, publicly proclaiming that he himself is God.(F) Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know what restrains him now [from being revealed]; it is so that he will be revealed at his own [appointed] time. For the mystery of lawlessness [rebellion against divine authority and the coming reign of lawlessness] is already at work; [but it is restrained] only until he who now restrains it is taken out of the way. Then the lawless one [the Antichrist] will be revealed and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by the appearance of His coming.(G) The coming of the [Antichrist, the lawless] one is through the activity of Satan, [attended] with great power [all kinds of counterfeit miracles] and [deceptive] signs and false wonders [all of them lies], 10 and by unlimited seduction to evil and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love of the truth [of the gospel] so as to be saved [they were spiritually blind, and rejected the truth that would have saved them]. 11 Because of this God will send upon them a misleading influence, [an activity of error and deception] so they will believe the lie, 12 in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth [about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ], but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we should and are [morally] obligated [as debtors] always to give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the [q]sanctifying work of the Spirit [that sets you apart for God’s purpose] and by your faith in the truth [of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity]. 14 It was to this end that He called you through our gospel [the good news of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection], so that you may obtain and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, [r]brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold [tightly] to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and encouragement and the good [well-founded] hope [of salvation] by His grace, 17 comfort and encourage and strengthen your hearts [keeping them steadfast and on course] in every good work and word.

Exhortation

Finally, brothers and sisters, pray continually for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be honored [triumphantly celebrated and glorified], just as it was with you; and [pray] that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not everyone has the faith. But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you [setting you on a firm foundation] and will protect and guard you from the evil one. We have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do the things [which] we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness and patience of Christ.

Now we command you, believers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by His authority, that you withdraw and keep away from every brother or sister who leads an undisciplined life and does not live in accordance with the tradition and teaching that [s]you have received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined or inappropriate manner when we were with you [we were never idle or lazy, nor did we avoid our duties], nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with labor and hardship we worked night and day [to pay our own way] so that we would not be a financial burden on any of you [for our support]; not because we do not have a right to such support, but [we provided our own financial support] to offer ourselves as a model for you, so that you would follow our example. 10 For even while we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is [t]not to eat, either. 11 Indeed, we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined and inappropriate life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies [meddling in other people’s business]. 12 Now such people we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work quietly and earn their own food and other necessities [supporting themselves instead of depending on the hospitality of others]. 13 And as for [the rest of] you, [u]believers, do not grow tired or lose heart in doing good [but continue doing what is right without weakening].

14 Now if anyone [in the church] does not obey what we say in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be ashamed and repent. 15 Do not regard him as an enemy, but keep admonishing him as a [believing] brother.

16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself grant you His peace at all times and in every way [that peace and spiritual well-being that comes to those who walk with Him, regardless of life’s circumstances]. The Lord be with you all.(H)

17 I, Paul, write you this final greeting with my own hand. This is the distinguishing mark in every letter [of mine, that shows it is genuine]. It is the way I write [my handwriting and signature]. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.

Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing (A)to be left behind at Athens alone, and we (B)sent Timothy, (C)our brother and God's coworker[a] in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that (D)we are destined for this. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, (E)just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. For this reason, (F)when I could bear it no longer, (G)I sent to learn about your faith, (H)for fear that somehow (I)the tempter had tempted you and (J)our labor would be in vain.

Timothy's Encouraging Report

But (K)now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of (L)your faith and love and reported (M)that you always remember us kindly and (N)long to see us, as we long to see you— for this reason, brothers,[b] in all our distress and affliction (O)we have been comforted about you through your faith. For now we live, if you (P)are standing fast in the Lord. For (Q)what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly (R)night and day (S)that we may see you face to face and (T)supply what is lacking in your faith?

11 Now may (U)our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, (V)direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord (W)make you increase and abound in love (X)for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may (Y)establish your hearts blameless in holiness before (Z)our God and Father, at (AA)the coming of our Lord Jesus (AB)with all his saints.

A Life Pleasing to God

Finally, then, brothers,[c] we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you (AC)received from us (AD)how you ought to walk and (AE)to please God, just as you are doing, that you (AF)do so more and more. For (AG)you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, (AH)your sanctification:[d] (AI)that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own (AJ)body[e] in holiness and (AK)honor, not in (AL)the passion of lust (AM)like the Gentiles (AN)who do not know God; that no one transgress and (AO)wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is (AP)an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For (AQ)God has not called us for (AR)impurity, but in holiness. Therefore (AS)whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, (AT)who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Now concerning (AU)brotherly love (AV)you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been (AW)taught by God (AX)to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what (AY)you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to (AZ)do this more and more, 11 and to aspire (BA)to live quietly, and (BB)to mind your own affairs, and (BC)to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may (BD)walk properly before (BE)outsiders and be dependent on no one.

The Coming of the Lord

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, (BF)that you may not grieve as others do (BG)who have no hope. 14 For (BH)since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him (BI)those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you (BJ)by a word from the Lord,[f] that (BK)we who are alive, who are left until (BL)the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For (BM)the Lord himself will descend (BN)from heaven (BO)with a cry of command, with the voice of (BP)an archangel, and (BQ)with the sound of the trumpet of God. And (BR)the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be (BS)caught up together with them (BT)in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so (BU)we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning (BV)the times and the seasons, brothers,[g] (BW)you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that (BX)the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then (BY)sudden destruction will come upon them (BZ)as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you (CA)are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all (CB)children[h] of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then (CC)let us not sleep, as others do, but let us (CD)keep awake and (CE)be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, (CF)are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, (CG)having put on the breastplate of (CH)faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for (CI)wrath, but (CJ)to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (CK)who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Final Instructions and Benediction

12 We ask you, brothers, (CL)to respect those who labor among you and (CM)are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. (CN)Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish (CO)the idle,[i] (CP)encourage the fainthearted, (CQ)help the weak, (CR)be patient with them all. 15 See that (CS)no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always (CT)seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 (CU)Rejoice always, 17 (CV)pray without ceasing, 18 (CW)give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 (CX)Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise (CY)prophecies, 21 but (CZ)test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may (DA)the God of peace himself (DB)sanctify you completely, and may your (DC)whole (DD)spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at (DE)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 (DF)He who calls you is faithful; (DG)he will surely do it.

25 (DH)Brothers, pray for us.

26 (DI)Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 I put you under oath before the Lord to have (DJ)this letter read to all the brothers.

28 (DK)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Greeting

(DL)Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving

(DM)We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers,[j] as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore (DN)we ourselves boast about you (DO)in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith (DP)in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring.

The Judgment at Christ's Coming

This is (DQ)evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be (DR)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— since indeed God considers it (DS)just (DT)to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant (DU)relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when (DV)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (DW)with his mighty angels (DX)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those (DY)who do not know God and on those who (DZ)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of (EA)eternal destruction, (EB)away from[k] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 (EC)when he comes on (ED)that day (EE)to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our (EF)testimony to you (EG)was believed. 11 To this end we (EH)always pray for you, that our God may (EI)make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every (EJ)work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus (EK)may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Man of Lawlessness

Now concerning (EL)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (EM)being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers,[l] not to be quickly shaken in mind or (EN)alarmed, either (EO)by a spirit or a (EP)spoken word, or (EQ)a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that (ER)the day of the Lord has come. (ES)Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, (ET)unless the rebellion comes first, and (EU)the man of lawlessness[m] is revealed, (EV)the son of destruction,[n] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (EW)proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For (EX)the mystery of lawlessness (EY)is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then (EZ)the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus (FA)will kill with (FB)the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by (FC)the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan (FD)with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for (FE)those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore (FF)God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe (FG)what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned (FH)who did not believe the truth but (FI)had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Stand Firm

13 But (FJ)we ought always to give thanks to God for you, (FK)brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you (FL)as the firstfruits[o] (FM)to be saved, (FN)through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through (FO)our gospel, (FP)so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, (FQ)stand firm and hold to (FR)the traditions that you were taught by us, either (FS)by our spoken word or by (FT)our letter.

16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, (FU)who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good (FV)hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and (FW)establish them in every good work and word.

Pray for Us

Finally, brothers,[p] (FX)pray for us, that (FY)the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[q] as happened among you, and (FZ)that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For (GA)not all have faith. But (GB)the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and (GC)guard you against (GD)the evil one.[r] And (GE)we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord (GF)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, (GG)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (GH)that you keep away from any (GI)brother (GJ)who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know (GK)how you ought to imitate us, because (GL)we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but (GM)with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was (GN)not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves (GO)an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: (GP)If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you (GQ)walk in idleness, not busy at work, but (GR)busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[s]

13 As for you, brothers, (GS)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and (GT)have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (GU)Do not regard him as an enemy, but (GV)warn him as a brother.

Benediction

16 Now may (GW)the Lord of peace himself (GX)give you peace at all times in every way. (GY)The Lord be with you all.

17 I, Paul, write (GZ)this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. 18 (HA)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:

For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;

10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:

And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
