Warning Against Idolatry

10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[a] that our fathers were all under (A)the cloud, and all (B)passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and (C)all ate the same (D)spiritual food, and (E)all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for (F)they were overthrown[b] in the wilderness.

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as (G)they did. (H)Do not be idolaters (I)as some of them were; as it is written, (J)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” (K)We must not indulge in sexual immorality (L)as some of them did, and (M)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ[c] to the test, (N)as some of them did and (O)were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, (P)as some of them did and (Q)were destroyed by (R)the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but (S)they were written down for our instruction, (T)on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore (U)let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. (V)God is faithful, and (W)he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14 Therefore, my beloved, (X)flee from idolatry. 15 I speak (Y)as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 (Z)The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? (AA)The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are (AB)one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider (AC)the people of Israel:[d] (AD)are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that (AE)an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice (AF)they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 (AG)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and (AH)the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (AI)the table of demons. 22 (AJ)Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? (AK)Are we stronger than he?

Do All to the Glory of God

23 (AL)“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 (AM)Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 25 (AN)Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For (AO)“the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, (AP)eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean (AQ)your conscience, but his. For (AR)why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that (AS)for which I give thanks?

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or (AT)whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 (AU)Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to (AV)the church of God, 33 just as (AW)I try to please everyone in everything I do, (AX)not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

11 (AY)Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

Head Coverings

Now I commend you (AZ)because you remember me in everything and (BA)maintain the traditions (BB)even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that (BC)the head of every man is Christ, (BD)the head of a wife[e] is her husband,[f] and (BE)the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife[g] who prays or (BF)prophesies (BG)with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same (BH)as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since (BI)he is the image and glory of God, but (BJ)woman is the glory of man. For (BK)man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but (BL)woman for man. 10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.[h] 11 Nevertheless, (BM)in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And (BN)all things are from God. 13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 (BO)If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do (BP)the churches of God.

The Lord's Supper

17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, (BQ)I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,[i] 19 for (BR)there must be factions among you in order (BS)that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, (BT)another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise (BU)the church of God and (BV)humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

23 For (BW)I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that (BX)the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for[j] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”[k] 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death (BY)until he comes.

27 (BZ)Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord (CA)in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning (CB)the body and blood of the Lord. 28 (CC)Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some (CD)have died.[l] 31 (CE)But if we judged[m] ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, (CF)we are disciplined[n] so that we may not be (CG)condemned along with the world.

33 So then, my brothers,[o] when you come together to eat, wait for[p] one another— 34 (CH)if anyone is hungry, (CI)let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things (CJ)I will give directions (CK)when I come.

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now (CL)concerning[q] spiritual gifts,[r] brothers,[s] I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that (CM)when you were pagans (CN)you were led astray to (CO)mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that (CP)no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is (CQ)accursed!” and (CR)no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

Now (CS)there are varieties of gifts, but (CT)the same Spirit; and (CU)there are varieties of service, but (CV)the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is (CW)the same God who empowers them all in everyone. (CX)To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of (CY)wisdom, and to another the utterance of (CZ)knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another (DA)faith by the same Spirit, to another (DB)gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another (DC)the working of miracles, to another (DD)prophecy, to another (DE)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another (DF)various kinds of tongues, to another (DG)the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, (DH)who apportions to each one individually (DI)as he wills.

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as (DJ)the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, (DK)so it is with Christ. 13 For (DL)in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—(DM)Jews or Greeks, slaves[t] or free—and (DN)all were made to drink of one Spirit.

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, (DO)God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, (DP)as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts,[u] yet one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, (DQ)all rejoice together.

27 Now (DR)you are the body of Christ and individually (DS)members of it. 28 And (DT)God has appointed in the church first (DU)apostles, second (DV)prophets, third teachers, then (DW)miracles, then (DX)gifts of healing, (DY)helping, (DZ)administrating, and (EA)various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But (EB)earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way.

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have (EC)prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, (ED)so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (EE)If I give away all I have, and (EF)if I deliver up my body to be burned,[v] but have not love, I gain nothing.

(EG)Love is patient and (EH)kind; love (EI)does not envy or boast; it (EJ)is not arrogant or rude. It (EK)does not insist on its own way; it (EL)is not irritable or resentful;[w] it (EM)does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but (EN)rejoices with the truth. (EO)Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, (EP)endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For (EQ)we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but (ER)when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For (ES)now we see in a mirror dimly, but (ET)then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as (EU)I have been fully known.

13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Prophecy and Tongues

14 (EV)Pursue love, and (EW)earnestly desire the (EX)spiritual gifts, especially that you may (EY)prophesy. For (EZ)one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but (FA)even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

Now, brothers,[x] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some (FB)revelation or knowledge or prophecy or (FC)teaching? If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? And (FD)if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be (FE)speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (FF)a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; (FG)I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will (FH)sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider[y] say (FI)“Amen” to (FJ)your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, (FK)do not be children in your thinking. (FL)Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be (FM)mature. 21 (FN)In the Law it is written, (FO)“By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign[z] not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, (FP)will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 (FQ)the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, (FR)falling on his face, he will worship God and (FS)declare that God is really among you.

Orderly Worship

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has (FT)a hymn, (FU)a lesson, (FV)a revelation, (FW)a tongue, or (FX)an interpretation. (FY)Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in (FZ)a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others (GA)weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, (GB)let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of (GC)confusion but of peace.

As in (GD)all the churches of the saints, 34 (GE)the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but (GF)should be in submission, as (GG)the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 (GH)If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, (GI)earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 (GJ)But all things should be done decently and (GK)in order.

The Resurrection of Christ

15 Now I would remind you, brothers,[aa] of the gospel (GL)I preached to you, which you received, (GM)in which you stand, and by which (GN)you are being saved, if you (GO)hold fast to the word I preached to you—(GP)unless you believed in vain.

For (GQ)I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died (GR)for our sins (GS)in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised (GT)on the third day (GU)in accordance with the Scriptures, and that (GV)he appeared to Cephas, then (GW)to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to (GX)James, then (GY)to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, (GZ)he appeared also to me. For (HA)I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because (HB)I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, (HC)I worked harder than any of them, (HD)though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

The Resurrection of the Dead

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, (HE)how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (HF)then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that (HG)he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and (HH)you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who (HI)have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope[ab] in this life only, (HJ)we are of all people most to be pitied.

20 But in fact (HK)Christ has been raised from the dead, (HL)the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as (HM)by a man came death, (HN)by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For (HO)as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then (HP)at his coming (HQ)those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers (HR)the kingdom to God the Father after destroying (HS)every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign (HT)until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be (HU)destroyed is death. 27 For (HV)“God[ac] has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When (HW)all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that (HX)God may be all in all.

29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? 30 Why are we (HY)in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by (HZ)my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (IA)I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, (IB)I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, (IC)“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 33 (ID)Do not be deceived: (IE)“Bad company ruins good morals.”[ad] 34 (IF)Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For (IG)some have no knowledge of God. (IH)I say this to your shame.

The Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask, (II)“How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! (IJ)What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

42 (IK)So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; (IL)it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, (IM)“The first man Adam became a living being”;[ae] (IN)the last Adam became a (IO)life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 (IP)The first man was from the earth, (IQ)a man of dust; (IR)the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, (IS)so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just (IT)as we have borne the image of the man of dust, (IU)we shall[af] also bear the image of the man of heaven.

Mystery and Victory

50 I tell you this, brothers: (IV)flesh and blood (IW)cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. (IX)We shall not all sleep, (IY)but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For (IZ)the trumpet will sound, and (JA)the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and (JB)this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

(JC)“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 (JD)“O death, where is your victory?
    O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and (JE)the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, (JF)who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 (JG)Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in (JH)the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord (JI)your labor is not in vain.

They all ate the same spiritual food(E) and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(F) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(G)

Now these things occurred as examples(H) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters,(I) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](J) We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(K) We should not test Christ,[b](L) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(M) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(N)—and were killed(O) by the destroying angel.(P)

Idol Feasts and the Lord’s Supper

14 Therefore, my dear friends,(W) flee from idolatry.(X) 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break(Y) a participation in the body of Christ?(Z) 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body,(AA) for we all share the one loaf.

18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices(AB) participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?(AC) 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons,(AD) not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.(AE) 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy?(AF) Are we stronger than he?(AG)

The Believer’s Freedom

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(AH) “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.(AI)

25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,(AJ) 26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[f](AK)

27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you(AL) without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.(AM) 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom(AN) being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?(AO)

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(AP) 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble,(AQ) whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God(AR) 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way.(AS) For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many,(AT) so that they may be saved.(AU) 11 Follow my example,(AV) as I follow the example of Christ.(AW)

On Covering the Head in Worship

I praise you(AX) for remembering me in everything(AY) and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.(AZ) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ,(BA) and the head of the woman is man,[g](BB) and the head of Christ is God.(BC) Every man who prays or prophesies(BD) with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies(BE) with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.(BF) For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

A man ought not to cover his head,[h] since he is the image(BG) and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;(BH) neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.(BI) 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own[i] head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.(BJ)

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.(BK)

Correcting an Abuse of the Lord’s Supper(BL)

17 In the following directives I have no praise for you,(BM) for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions(BN) among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.(BO) 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers.(BP) As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God(BQ) by humiliating those who have nothing?(BR) What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you?(BS) Certainly not in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord(BT) what I also passed on to you:(BU) The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body,(BV) which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(BW) in my blood;(BX) do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.(BY)

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.(BZ) 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves(CA) before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.(CB) 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.(CC) 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined(CD) so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.(CE)

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry(CF) should eat something at home,(CG) so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.

And when I come(CH) I will give further directions.

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit,(CI) brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.(CJ) You know that when you were pagans,(CK) somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.(CL) Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,”(CM) and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”(CN) except by the Holy Spirit.(CO)

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit(CP) distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone(CQ) it is the same God(CR) at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.(CS) To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,(CT) to another a message of knowledge(CU) by means of the same Spirit, to another faith(CV) by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing(CW) by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers,(CX) to another prophecy,(CY) to another distinguishing between spirits,(CZ) to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[j](DA) and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[k] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,(DB) and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body,(DC) so it is with Christ.(DD) 13 For we were all baptized(DE) by[l] one Spirit(DF) so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free(DG)—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.(DH) 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.(DI)

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed(DJ) the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.(DK) 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.(DL)

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

27 Now you are the body of Christ,(DM) and each one of you is a part of it.(DN) 28 And God has placed in the church(DO) first of all apostles,(DP) second prophets,(DQ) third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing,(DR) of helping, of guidance,(DS) and of different kinds of tongues.(DT) 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[m]?(DU) Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire(DV) the greater gifts.

Love Is Indispensable

And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

13 If I speak in the tongues[n](DW) of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy(DX) and can fathom all mysteries(DY) and all knowledge,(DZ) and if I have a faith(EA) that can move mountains,(EB) but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor(EC) and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[o](ED) but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient,(EE) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.(EF) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,(EG) it is not easily angered,(EH) it keeps no record of wrongs.(EI) Love does not delight in evil(EJ) but rejoices with the truth.(EK) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.(EL)

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies,(EM) they will cease; where there are tongues,(EN) they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part(EO) and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes,(EP) what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood(EQ) behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror;(ER) then we shall see face to face.(ES) Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.(ET)

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.(EU) But the greatest of these is love.(EV)

Intelligibility in Worship

14 Follow the way of love(EW) and eagerly desire(EX) gifts of the Spirit,(EY) especially prophecy.(EZ) For anyone who speaks in a tongue[p](FA) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;(FB) they utter mysteries(FC) by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(FD) encouraging(FE) and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue(FF) edifies(FG) themselves, but the one who prophesies(FH) edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[q] but I would rather have you prophesy.(FI) The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[r] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.(FJ)

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation(FK) or knowledge(FL) or prophecy or word of instruction?(FM) Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?(FN) So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.(FO) 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit,(FP) try to excel in those that build up(FQ) the church.

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.(FR) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays,(FS) but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit,(FT) but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing(FU) with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[s] say “Amen”(FV) to your thanksgiving,(FW) since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.(FX)

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.(FY)

20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children.(FZ) In regard to evil be infants,(GA) but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law(GB) it is written:

“With other tongues
    and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
    but even then they will not listen to me,(GC)
says the Lord.”[t]

22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy,(GD) however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?(GE) 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets(GF) of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”(GG)

Good Order in Worship

26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters?(GH) When you come together, each of you(GI) has a hymn,(GJ) or a word of instruction,(GK) a revelation, a tongue(GL) or an interpretation.(GM) Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.(GN) 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

29 Two or three prophets(GO) should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.(GP) 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.(GQ) 33 For God is not a God of disorder(GR) but of peace(GS)—as in all the congregations(GT) of the Lord’s people.(GU)

34 Women[u] should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,(GV) but must be in submission,(GW) as the law(GX) says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.[v]

36 Or did the word of God(GY) originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet(GZ) or otherwise gifted by the Spirit,(HA) let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.(HB) 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.[w]

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager(HC) to prophesy,(HD) and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly(HE) way.

The Resurrection of Christ

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel(HF) I preached to you,(HG) which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved,(HH) if you hold firmly(HI) to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

For what I received(HJ) I passed on to you(HK) as of first importance[x]: that Christ died for our sins(HL) according to the Scriptures,(HM) that he was buried,(HN) that he was raised(HO) on the third day(HP) according to the Scriptures,(HQ) and that he appeared to Cephas,[y](HR) and then to the Twelve.(HS) After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.(HT) Then he appeared to James,(HU) then to all the apostles,(HV) and last of all he appeared to me also,(HW) as to one abnormally born.

For I am the least of the apostles(HX) and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted(HY) the church of God.(HZ) 10 But by the grace(IA) of God I am what I am, and his grace to me(IB) was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them(IC)—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.(ID) 11 Whether, then, it is I or they,(IE) this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

The Resurrection of the Dead

12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead,(IF) how can some of you say that there is no resurrection(IG) of the dead?(IH) 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised,(II) our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead.(IJ) But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.(IK) 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep(IL) in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.(IM)

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,(IN) the firstfruits(IO) of those who have fallen asleep.(IP) 21 For since death came through a man,(IQ) the resurrection of the dead(IR) comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.(IS) 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits;(IT) then, when he comes,(IU) those who belong to him.(IV) 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom(IW) to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.(IX) 25 For he must reign(IY) until he has put all his enemies under his feet.(IZ) 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.(JA) 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.”[z](JB) Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.(JC) 28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him,(JD) so that God may be all in all.(JE)

29 Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? 30 And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour?(JF) 31 I face death every day(JG)—yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If I fought wild beasts(JH) in Ephesus(JI) with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised,

“Let us eat and drink,
    for tomorrow we die.”[aa](JJ)

33 Do not be misled:(JK) “Bad company corrupts good character.”[ab](JL) 34 Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God(JM)—I say this to your shame.(JN)

The Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask,(JO) “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”(JP) 36 How foolish!(JQ) What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.(JR) 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.(JS) 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor,(JT) the moon another and the stars another;(JU) and star differs from star in splendor.

42 So will it be(JV) with the resurrection of the dead.(JW) The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;(JX) 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory;(JY) it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.(JZ)

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[ac];(KA) the last Adam,(KB) a life-giving spirit.(KC) 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.(KD) 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth;(KE) the second man is of heaven.(KF) 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.(KG) 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,(KH) so shall we[ad] bear the image of the heavenly man.(KI)

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood(KJ) cannot inherit the kingdom of God,(KK) nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.(KL) 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery:(KM) We will not all sleep,(KN) but we will all be changed(KO) 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,(KP) the dead(KQ) will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable(KR) must clothe itself with the imperishable,(KS) and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[ae](KT)

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
    Where, O death, is your sting?”[af](KU)

56 The sting of death is sin,(KV) and the power of sin is the law.(KW) 57 But thanks be to God!(KX) He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.(KY)

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,(KZ) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.(LA)

10 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

28 But if any man say unto you, this is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

11 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.

Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.

21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked.

25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?

31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

32 If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.

33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?

36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:

37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:

38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.

40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.

48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
