Appeal to Unity

Paul, (A)called as an apostle of Jesus Christ [a]by (B)the will of God, and our (C)brother (D)Sosthenes,

To (E)the church of God which is in (F)Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, [b]saints (G)by calling, with all who in every place (H)call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

(I)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

(J)I thank [c]my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in everything you were (K)enriched in Him, in all (L)speech and (M)all knowledge, just as (N)the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed [d]in you, so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you eagerly (O)await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, (P)who will also [e]confirm you to the end, blameless on (Q)the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (R)God is faithful, through whom you were (S)called into (T)fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now (U)I urge you, (V)brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all [f]agree and that there be no [g](W)divisions among you, but that you be [h]made complete in (X)the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that (Y)each one of you is saying, “I am [i]with Paul,” [j]or “I am [k]with (Z)Apollos,” [l]or “I am [m]with [n](AA)Cephas,” [o]or “I am [p]with Christ.” 13 [q]Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you (AB)baptized [r]in the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I (AC)baptized none of you except (AD)Crispus and (AE)Gaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized [s]in my name! 16 But I did baptize the (AF)household of Stephanas also; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else. 17 (AG)For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, (AH)not with [t]cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made of no effect.

The Wisdom of God

18 For the word of the cross is (AI)foolishness to (AJ)those who [u]are perishing, but to us who [v]are being saved it is (AK)the power of God. 19 For it is written:

(AL)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And the understanding of those who have understanding, I will confound.”

20 (AM)Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of (AN)this age? Has God not (AO)made foolish the wisdom of (AP)the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God (AQ)the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, (AR)God [w]was pleased through the (AS)foolishness of the [x]message preached to (AT)save those who believe. 22 For indeed (AU)Jews ask for [y]signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach [z](AV)Christ crucified, (AW)to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles (AX)foolishness, 24 but to those who are (AY)the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (AZ)the power of God and (BA)the wisdom of God. 25 For the (BB)foolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and (BC)the weakness of God is stronger than mankind.

26 For [aa]consider your (BD)calling, brothers and sisters, that there were (BE)not many wise according to [ab]the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27 but (BF)God has chosen the foolish things of (BG)the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of (BH)the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the [ac]insignificant things of (BI)the world and the despised God has chosen, (BJ)the things that are not, so that He may (BK)nullify the things that are, 29 so that (BL)no [ad]human may boast before God. 30 But it is [ae]due to Him that you are in (BM)Christ Jesus, who became to us (BN)wisdom from God, [af]and (BO)righteousness and (BP)sanctification, and (BQ)redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written: “(BR)Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

And when I came to you, brothers and sisters, I (BS)did not come as someone superior in [ag]speaking ability or [ah]wisdom, as I proclaimed to you (BT)the [ai]testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except (BU)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I also was with you in (BV)weakness and (BW)fear, and in great trembling, and my [aj]message and my preaching were (BX)not in persuasive words of [ak]wisdom, but in demonstration of (BY)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not [al]rest on the [am]wisdom of mankind, but on (BZ)the power of God.

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (CA)mature; a wisdom, however, not of (CB)this age nor of the rulers of (CC)this age, who are (CD)passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a (CE)mystery, the hidden wisdom which God (CF)predestined before the (CG)ages to our glory; the wisdom (CH)which none of the rulers of (CI)this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified (CJ)the Lord of glory; but just as it is written:

(CK)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the human heart,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 [an](CL)For to us God revealed them (CM)through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the (CN)depths of God. 11 For who among people knows the thoughts of a person except the (CO)spirit of the person that is in him? So also the thoughts of God no one knows, except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we (CP)have not received the spirit of (CQ)the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, (CR)not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, [ao]combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14 But [ap]a (CS)natural person (CT)does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are (CU)foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But the one who is (CV)spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is [aq]discerned by no one. 16 For (CW)who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But (CX)we have the mind of Christ.

Foundations for Living

And I, brothers and sisters, could not speak to you as (CY)spiritual people, but only as (CZ)fleshly, as to (DA)infants in Christ. I gave you (DB)milk to drink, not solid food; for you (DC)were not yet able to consume it. But even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is (DD)jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking (DE)like ordinary people? For when (DF)one person says, “I am [ar]with Paul,” and another, “I am [as]with Apollos,” are you not ordinary (DG)people?

What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? (DH)Servants through whom you believed, even (DI)as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. (DJ)I planted, (DK)Apollos watered, but (DL)God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now the one who plants and the one who waters are one; but each will (DM)receive his own [at]reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s (DN)fellow workers; you are God’s [au](DO)field, God’s (DP)building.

10 According to (DQ)the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder (DR)I laid a foundation, and (DS)another is building on it. But each person must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay a (DT)foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 (DU)each one’s work will become evident; for (DV)the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test [av]the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it remains, he will (DW)receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet only (DX)so as through fire.

16 (DY)Do you not know that (DZ)you are a [aw]temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys the [ax]temple of God, God will destroy [ay]that person; for the [az]temple of God is holy, [ba]and that is what you are.

18 (EA)Take care that no one deceives himself. (EB)If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in (EC)this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 19 For (ED)the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God. For it is written: “He is (EE)the one who catches the wise by their craftiness”; 20 and again, “(EF)The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are useless.” 21 So then, (EG)no one is to be boasting in people. For (EH)all things belong to you, 22 (EI)whether Paul or Apollos or [bb]Cephas, or the world or (EJ)life or death, or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23 and (EK)you belong to Christ, and (EL)Christ belongs to God.

Servants of Christ

This is the way any person is to regard us: as (EM)servants of Christ and (EN)stewards of (EO)the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required [bc]of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is an insignificant matter that I would be examined by you, or by any human [bd]court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I (EP)am not aware of anything against myself; however I am not (EQ)vindicated by this, but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore (ER)do not go on [be]passing judgment before [bf]the time, but wait (ES)until the Lord comes, who will both (ET)bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of human hearts; and then (EU)praise will come to each person from God.

Now these things, brothers and sisters, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos on your account, so that in us you may learn not to exceed (EV)what is written, so that no one of you will (EW)become [bg]arrogant (EX)in behalf of one against the other. For who considers you as superior? (EY)What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

You are (EZ)already filled, you have already become rich, you have become kings without us; and indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you! For I think, God has exhibited us, the apostles, last of all as men (FA)condemned to death, because we (FB)have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to mankind. 10 We are (FC)fools on account of Christ, but (FD)you are prudent in Christ! (FE)We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are without honor! 11 Up to this present hour we are both (FF)hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless; 12 and we labor, (FG)working with our own hands; when we are (FH)verbally abused, we bless; when we are (FI)persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we [bh]reply as friends; we have (FJ)become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

14 I do not write these things to (FK)shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved (FL)children. 15 For if you were to have countless (FM)tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in (FN)Christ Jesus I (FO)became your father through the (FP)gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, be (FQ)imitators of me. 17 For this reason I (FR)have sent to you (FS)Timothy, who is my (FT)beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, (FU)just as I teach everywhere in every church. 18 Now some have become [bi](FV)arrogant, as though I were not (FW)coming to you. 19 But I (FX)will come to you soon, (FY)if the Lord wills, and I shall find out, not the [bj]words of those who are (FZ)arrogant, but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God is (GA)not in [bk]words, but in power. 21 What do you desire? (GB)That I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?

Sexual Immorality Rebuked

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and sexual immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, namely, that someone has (GC)his father’s wife. [bl]You (GD)have become [bm]arrogant and [bn]have not (GE)mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be (GF)removed from your midst.

For I, on my part, though (GG)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. (GH)In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and [bo]I with you in spirit, (GI)with the power of our Lord Jesus, I have decided [bp]to (GJ)turn such a person over to (GK)Satan for the destruction of his [bq]body, so that his spirit may be saved on (GL)the day of the [br]Lord.

(GM)Your boasting is not good. (GN)Do you not know that (GO)a little [bs]leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our (GP)Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let’s celebrate the feast, (GQ)not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter (GR)not to associate with sexually immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with (GS)idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world. 11 But [bt]actually, I [bu]wrote to you not to associate [bv]with any so-called (GT)brother if he is a sexually immoral person, or a greedy person, or (GU)an idolater, or is verbally abusive, or habitually drunk, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a person. 12 For what business of mine is it to judge (GV)outsiders? (GW)Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God [bw]judges. (GX)Remove the evil person from among yourselves.

Lawsuits Discouraged

Does any one of you, when he has a [bx]case against [by]his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous and (GY)not before the [bz]saints? Or (GZ)do you not know that (HA)the [ca]saints will judge (HB)the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to form the smallest [cb]law courts? (HC)Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? So if you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, [cc]do you appoint them as judges who are of no account in the church? (HD)I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you anyone wise who will be able to decide between his (HE)brothers and sisters, but brother goes to law with brother, and that before (HF)unbelievers?

Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. (HG)Why not rather suffer the wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves do wrong and defraud. And this to your (HH)brothers and sisters!

Or (HI)do you not know that the unrighteous will not (HJ)inherit the kingdom of God? (HK)Do not be deceived; (HL)neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [cd]homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will (HM)inherit the kingdom of God. 11 (HN)Such were some of you; but you were (HO)washed, but you were (HP)sanctified, but you were (HQ)justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and [ce]in the Spirit of our God.

The Body Is the Lord’s

12 (HR)All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 (HS)Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, however God will (HT)do away with both [cf]of them. But the body is not for sexual immorality, but (HU)for the Lord, and (HV)the Lord is for the body. 14 Now God has not only (HW)raised the Lord, but (HX)will also raise us up through His power. 15 (HY)Do you not know that (HZ)your bodies are parts of Christ? Shall I then take away the parts of Christ and make them parts of a prostitute? [cg](IA)Far from it! 16 Or (IB)do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “(IC)The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is (ID)one spirit with Him. 18 (IE)Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the [ch]sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or (IF)do you not know that (IG)your body is a [ci]temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from [cj]God, and that (IH)you are not your own? 20 For (II)you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in (IJ)your body.

Teaching on Marriage

Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is (IK)good for a man [ck]not to touch a woman. But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise the wife also to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise the husband also does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. [cl](IL)Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and [cm]come together again so that (IM)Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, (IN)not of command. [cn]Yet I wish that all [co]men were (IO)even as I myself am. However, (IP)each has his own gift from God, one in this way, and another in that.

But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is (IQ)good for them if they remain (IR)even as I. But if they do not have self-control, (IS)let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 But to the married I give instructions, (IT)not I, but the Lord, that the wife is not to leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband is not to [cp]divorce his wife.

12 But to the rest (IU)I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she consents to live with him, he must not [cq]divorce her. 13 And [cr]if any woman has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not [cs]divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through [ct]her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are (IV)holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one is leaving, [cu]let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called [cv]us (IW)in peace. 16 For how do you know, wife, whether you will (IX)save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

17 Only, (IY)as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this way let him walk. And (IZ)so I direct in (JA)all the churches. 18 Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? (JB)He is not to be circumcised. 19 (JC)Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is (JD)the keeping of the commandments of God. 20 (JE)Each person is to remain in that [cw]state in which he was called.

21 Were you called as a slave? Do not let it concern you. But if you are also able to become free, take advantage of that. 22 For the one who was called in the Lord as a slave, is (JF)the Lord’s freed person; likewise the one who was called as free, is (JG)Christ’s slave. 23 (JH)You were bought for a price; do not become slaves of people. 24 Brothers and sisters, (JI)each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.

25 Now concerning virgins, I have (JJ)no command of the Lord, but I am offering direction as one who [cx](JK)by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. 26 I think, then, that this is good in view of the [cy]present (JL)distress, that (JM)it is good for a man [cz]to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such people as yourselves will have [da]trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you. 29 But this I say, brothers, (JN)the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none; 30 and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; 31 and those who use the world, as though they did not (JO)make full use of it; for (JP)the present form of this world is passing away.

32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is (JQ)unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to put a restraint on you, but [db]to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.

36 But if anyone thinks that he is acting dishonorably toward his virgin, if she is [dc]past her youth and it ought to be so, let him do what he wishes, he is not sinning; let [dd]them marry. 37 But the one who stands firm in his heart, [de]if he is not under constraint, but has authority [df]over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin, he will do well. 38 So then, both the one who gives his own virgin in marriage does well, and the one who does not give her in marriage will do better.

39 (JR)A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband [dg]dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only (JS)in the Lord. 40 But (JT)in my opinion she is [dh]happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Paul, called to be an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) and our brother Sosthenes,(C)

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called(F) to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name(G) of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(H)

Thanksgiving

I always thank my God for you(I) because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched(J) in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge(K) God thus confirming our testimony(L) about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift(M) as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.(N) He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless(O) on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(P) God is faithful,(Q) who has called you(R) into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.(S)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](T) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(U) but that you be perfectly united(V) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(W) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(X) another, “I follow Apollos”;(Y) another, “I follow Cephas[b]”;(Z) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(AA) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(AB) and Gaius,(AC) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(AD) of Stephanas;(AE) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(AF) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(AG) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(AH) to those who are perishing,(AI) but to us who are being saved(AJ) it is the power of God.(AK) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c](AL)

20 Where is the wise person?(AM) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(AN) Has not God made foolish(AO) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(AP) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(AQ) those who believe.(AR) 22 Jews demand signs(AS) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(AT) a stumbling block(AU) to Jews and foolishness(AV) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(AW) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(AX) and the wisdom of God.(AY) 25 For the foolishness(AZ) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(BA) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(BB) Not many of you were wise(BC) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(BD) the foolish(BE) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(BF)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(BG) 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,(BH) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,(BI) holiness(BJ) and redemption.(BK) 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d](BL)

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(BM) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[e] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(BN) I came to you(BO) in weakness(BP) with great fear and trembling.(BQ) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(BR) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(BS) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(BT)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(BU) but not the wisdom of this age(BV) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(BW) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(BX) that has been hidden(BY) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(BZ) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(CA) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[f]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(CB)

10 these are the things God has revealed(CC) to us by his Spirit.(CD)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(CE) except their own spirit(CF) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(CG) of the world,(CH) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(CI) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[g] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(CJ) but considers them foolishness,(CK) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(CL) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[h](CM)

But we have the mind of Christ.(CN)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(CO) but as people who are still worldly(CP)—mere infants(CQ) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(CR) for you were not yet ready for it.(CS) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(CT) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(CU) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(CV) And what is Paul? Only servants,(CW) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(CX) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(CY) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(CZ) you are God’s field,(DA) God’s building.(DB)

10 By the grace God has given me,(DC) I laid a foundation(DD) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(DE) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(DF) because the Day(DG) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(DH) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(DI) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(DJ)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(DK) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(DL) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(DM) by the standards of this age,(DN) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(DO) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[i];(DP) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[j](DQ) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(DR) All things are yours,(DS) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(DT) or Cephas[k](DU) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(DV)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(DW) and Christ is of God.

The Nature of True Apostleship

This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants(DX) of Christ and as those entrusted(DY) with the mysteries(DZ) God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience(EA) is clear, but that does not make me innocent.(EB) It is the Lord who judges me.(EC) Therefore judge nothing(ED) before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.(EE) He will bring to light(EF) what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.(EG)

Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.”(EH) Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.(EI) For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive?(EJ) And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich!(EK) You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die(EL) in the arena. We have been made a spectacle(EM) to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ,(EN) but you are so wise in Christ!(EO) We are weak, but you are strong!(EP) You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.(EQ) 12 We work hard with our own hands.(ER) When we are cursed, we bless;(ES) when we are persecuted,(ET) we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage(EU) of the world—right up to this moment.

Paul’s Appeal and Warning

14 I am writing this not to shame you(EV) but to warn you as my dear children.(EW) 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father(EX) through the gospel.(EY) 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me.(EZ) 17 For this reason I have sent to you(FA) Timothy,(FB) my son(FC) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(FD)

18 Some of you have become arrogant,(FE) as if I were not coming to you.(FF) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(FG) if the Lord is willing,(FH) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(FI) talk but of power.(FJ) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(FK) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(FL) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(FM) and have put out of your fellowship(FN) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(FO) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(FP) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(FQ) to Satan(FR) for the destruction of the flesh,[l][m] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(FS)

Your boasting is not good.(FT) Don’t you know that a little yeast(FU) leavens the whole batch of dough?(FV) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(FW) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(FX) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(FY) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(FZ) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[n](GA) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(GB) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(GC)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(GD) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(GE) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[o](GF)

Lawsuits Among Believers

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?(GG) Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?(GH) And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you.(GI) Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?(GJ) But instead, one brother(GK) takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!(GL)

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?(GM) Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.(GN) Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?(GO) Do not be deceived:(GP) Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers(GQ) nor men who have sex with men[p](GR) 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers(GS) will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were.(GT) But you were washed,(GU) you were sanctified,(GV) you were justified(GW) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Sexual Immorality

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(GX) “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”(GY) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,(GZ) and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,(HA) and he will raise us also.(HB) 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?(HC) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[q](HD) 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[r](HE)

18 Flee from sexual immorality.(HF) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.(HG) 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples(HH) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(HI) 20 you were bought at a price.(HJ) Therefore honor God with your bodies.(HK)

Concerning Married Life

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”(HL) But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,(HM) and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time,(HN) so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan(HO) will not tempt you(HP) because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command.(HQ) I wish that all of you were as I am.(HR) But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.(HS)

Now to the unmarried[s] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.(HT) But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry,(HU) for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.(HV) 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband.(HW) And a husband must not divorce his wife.

12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord):(HX) If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.(HY)

15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.(HZ) 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save(IA) your husband?(IB) Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

Concerning Change of Status

17 Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.(IC) This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.(ID) 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised.(IE) 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.(IF) Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20 Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(IG)

21 Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22 For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person;(IH) similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave.(II) 23 You were bought at a price;(IJ) do not become slaves of human beings. 24 Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(IK)

Concerning the Unmarried

25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord,(IL) but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy(IM) is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.(IN) 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.(IO) 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned;(IP) and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.

29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.(IQ) From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.(IR)

32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs(IS)—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.(IT) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided(IU) devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[t] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning.(IV) They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right,(IW) but he who does not marry her does better.[u]

39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.(IX) But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.(IY) 40 In my judgment,(IZ) she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

  1. 1 Corinthians 1:10 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verses 11 and 26; and in 2:1; 3:1; 4:6; 6:8; 7:24, 29; 10:1; 11:33; 12:1; 14:6, 20, 26, 39; 15:1, 6, 50, 58; 16:15, 20.
