Offerings for the Temple

29 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is (A)young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for (B)the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of (C)onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: (D)3,000 talents[a] of gold, of the gold of (E)Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,[b] and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself[c] today to the Lord?”

Then (F)the leaders of fathers' houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and (G)the officers over the king's work. They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 (H)darics[d] of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron. And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of (I)Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a (J)whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David Prays in the Assembly

10 Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: (K)“Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 (L)Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 (M)Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. (N)In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 (O)For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are (P)like a shadow, and there is no abiding.[e] 16 O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. 17 I know, my God, (Q)that you test the heart and (R)have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. 18 O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you. 19 (S)Grant to Solomon my son a whole heart that he may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, performing all, and that he may (T)build the palace (U)for which I have made provision.”

20 Then David said to all the assembly, (V)“Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, (W)and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king. 21 And they offered sacrifices to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 lambs, with their (X)drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness.

Solomon Anointed King

And they made Solomon the son of David king (Y)the second time, and they (Z)anointed him as prince for the Lord, and (AA)Zadok as priest.

23 (AB)Then Solomon sat on the (AC)throne of the Lord as king in place of David his father. And he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David, pledged their allegiance to King Solomon. 25 And the Lord made Solomon very (AD)great in the sight of all Israel and (AE)bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

The Death of David

26 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 The (AF)time that he reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 28 Then he died (AG)at a good age, (AH)full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. 29 Now the acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the Chronicles (AI)of Samuel the seer, and in the Chronicles of (AJ)Nathan the prophet, and in the Chronicles of (AK)Gad the seer, 30 with accounts of all his rule and his might and of the circumstances (AL)that came upon him and upon Israel and upon all the kingdoms of the countries.

Solomon Worships at Gibeon

(AM)Solomon the son of David established himself in his kingdom, (AN)and the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.

Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the (AO)commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to all the leaders in all Israel, the heads of fathers' houses. And Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to (AP)the high place that was at Gibeon, (AQ)for (AR)the tent of meeting of God, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness, was there. (AS)(But David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place that David had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.) Moreover, (AT)the bronze altar that (AU)Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the Lord. And Solomon and the assembly (AV)sought it[f] out. And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the Lord, which was at the tent of meeting, (AW)and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

Solomon Prays for Wisdom

(AX)In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to David my father, (AY)and have made me king in his place. O Lord God, (AZ)let your word to David my father be now fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous (BA)as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge to (BB)go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of yours, which is so great?” 11 God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for (BC)possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you (BD)riches, possessions, and honor, (BE)such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.” 13 So Solomon came from[g] the (BF)high place at Gibeon, from before (BG)the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel.

Solomon Given Wealth

14 (BH)Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen. (BI)He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, whom he stationed (BJ)in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 15 And the king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone, and he made cedar as plentiful as the sycamore of the Shephelah. 16 And Solomon's import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king's traders would buy them from Kue for a price. 17 They imported a chariot from Egypt for 600 shekels[h] of silver, and a horse for 150. Likewise through them these were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.

Preparing to Build the Temple

[i] (BK)Now Solomon purposed to build a temple for the name of the Lord, and a royal palace for himself. [j] (BL)And Solomon assigned 70,000 men to bear burdens and 80,000 to quarry in the hill country, and (BM)3,600 to oversee them. (BN)And Solomon sent word to Hiram the king of Tyre: (BO)“As you dealt with David my father and sent him cedar to build himself a house to dwell in, so deal with me. Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God and dedicate it to him for the burning of (BP)incense of sweet spices before him, and for (BQ)the regular arrangement of the showbread, and for (BR)burnt offerings morning and evening, (BS)on the Sabbaths and the new moons and the appointed feasts of the Lord our God, as ordained forever for Israel. The house that I am to build will be great, (BT)for our God is greater than all gods. (BU)But who is able to build him a house, since (BV)heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him? Who am I to build a house for him, except as a place to make offerings before him? So now (BW)send me a man skilled to work in gold, silver, bronze, and iron, and in purple, crimson, and blue fabrics, trained also in engraving, to be with the skilled workers who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, (BX)whom David my father provided. Send me also cedar, cypress, and algum timber from Lebanon, for I know that (BY)your servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon. And my servants will be with your servants, to prepare timber for me in abundance, for the house I am to build will be great and wonderful. 10 (BZ)I will give for your servants, the woodsmen who cut timber, 20,000 cors[k] of crushed wheat, 20,000 cors of barley, 20,000 baths[l] of wine, and 20,000 baths of oil.”

11 Then Hiram the king of Tyre answered in a letter that he sent to Solomon, (CA)“Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you king over them.” 12 Hiram also said, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, (CB)who made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, who has discretion and understanding, (CC)who will build a temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself.

13 “Now I have sent a skilled man, who has understanding, Huram-abi, 14 (CD)the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre. He is (CE)trained to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, and in purple, blue, and crimson fabrics and fine linen, and to do all sorts of engraving and execute any design that may be assigned him, with your craftsmen, the craftsmen of my lord, David your father. 15 Now therefore the wheat and barley, oil and wine, (CF)of which my lord has spoken, let him send to his servants. 16 (CG)And we will cut whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you in rafts by sea to (CH)Joppa, so that you may take it up to Jerusalem.”

17 Then Solomon counted all the resident aliens who were in the land of Israel, (CI)after the census of them that David his father had taken, and there were found 153,600. 18 (CJ)Seventy thousand of them he assigned to bear burdens, 80,000 to quarry in the hill country, and 3,600 as overseers to make the people work.

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced.(A) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold(B) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise,[a](C) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.(D) Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided(E) for this holy temple: three thousand talents[b] of gold (gold of Ophir)(F) and seven thousand talents[c] of refined silver,(G) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials(H) in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.(I) They(J) gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents[d] and ten thousand darics[e] of gold, ten thousand talents[f] of silver, eighteen thousand talents[g] of bronze and a hundred thousand talents[h] of iron. Anyone who had precious stones(K) gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite.(L) The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly(M) to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power(N)
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.(O)
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.(P)
12 Wealth and honor(Q) come from you;
you are the ruler(R) of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
    and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?(S) Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.(T) 15 We are foreigners and strangers(U) in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow,(V) without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart(W) and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.(X) 18 Lord, the God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion(Y) to keep your commands, statutes and decrees(Z) and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.”(AA)

20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.

Solomon Acknowledged as King(AB)

21 The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him:(AC) a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.(AD) 22 They ate and drank with great joy(AE) in the presence of the Lord that day.

Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the Lord to be ruler and Zadok(AF) to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat(AG) on the throne(AH) of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons,(AI) pledged their submission to King Solomon.

25 The Lord highly exalted(AJ) Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor(AK) such as no king over Israel ever had before.(AL)

The Death of David(AM)

26 David son of Jesse was king(AN) over all Israel.(AO) 27 He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron(AP) and thirty-three in Jerusalem.(AQ) 28 He died(AR) at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.(AS)

29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer,(AT) the records of Nathan(AU) the prophet and the records of Gad(AV) the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(AW)(AX)

Solomon son of David established(AY) himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with(AZ) him and made him exceedingly great.(BA)

Then Solomon spoke to all Israel(BB)—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon,(BC) for God’s tent of meeting(BD) was there, which Moses(BE) the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. Now David had brought up the ark(BF) of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent(BG) for it in Jerusalem. But the bronze altar(BH) that Bezalel(BI) son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired(BJ) of him there. Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

That night God appeared(BK) to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me(BL) king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise(BM) to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.(BN) 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead(BO) this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth,(BP) possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor,(BQ) such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.(BR)

13 Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.

14 Solomon accumulated chariots(BS) and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[i] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold(BT) as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[j]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17 They imported a chariot(BU) from Egypt for six hundred shekels[k] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[l] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.

Preparations for Building the Temple(BV)

[m]Solomon gave orders to build a temple(BW) for the Name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself.(BX) He conscripted 70,000 men as carriers and 80,000 as stonecutters in the hills and 3,600 as foremen over them.(BY)

Solomon sent this message to Hiram[n](BZ) king of Tyre:

“Send me cedar logs(CA) as you did for my father David when you sent him cedar to build a palace to live in. Now I am about to build a temple(CB) for the Name of the Lord my God and to dedicate it to him for burning fragrant incense(CC) before him, for setting out the consecrated bread(CD) regularly, and for making burnt offerings(CE) every morning and evening and on the Sabbaths,(CF) at the New Moons(CG) and at the appointed festivals of the Lord our God. This is a lasting ordinance for Israel.

“The temple I am going to build will be great,(CH) because our God is greater than all other gods.(CI) But who is able to build a temple for him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain him?(CJ) Who then am I(CK) to build a temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before him?

“Send me, therefore, a man skilled to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, and in purple, crimson and blue yarn, and experienced in the art of engraving, to work in Judah and Jerusalem with my skilled workers,(CL) whom my father David provided.

“Send me also cedar, juniper and algum[o] logs from Lebanon, for I know that your servants are skilled in cutting timber there. My servants will work with yours to provide me with plenty of lumber, because the temple I build must be large and magnificent. 10 I will give your servants, the woodsmen who cut the timber, twenty thousand cors[p] of ground wheat, twenty thousand cors[q] of barley, twenty thousand baths[r] of wine and twenty thousand baths of olive oil.(CM)

11 Hiram king of Tyre replied by letter to Solomon:

“Because the Lord loves(CN) his people, he has made you their king.”

12 And Hiram added:

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth!(CO) He has given King David a wise son, endowed with intelligence and discernment, who will build a temple for the Lord and a palace for himself.

13 “I am sending you Huram-Abi,(CP) a man of great skill, 14 whose mother was from Dan(CQ) and whose father was from Tyre. He is trained(CR) to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, and with purple and blue(CS) and crimson yarn and fine linen. He is experienced in all kinds of engraving and can execute any design given to him. He will work with your skilled workers and with those of my lord, David your father.

15 “Now let my lord send his servants the wheat and barley and the olive oil(CT) and wine he promised, 16 and we will cut all the logs from Lebanon that you need and will float them as rafts by sea down to Joppa.(CU) You can then take them up to Jerusalem.”

17 Solomon took a census of all the foreigners(CV) residing in Israel, after the census(CW) his father David had taken; and they were found to be 153,600. 18 He assigned(CX) 70,000 of them to be carriers and 80,000 to be stonecutters in the hills, with 3,600 foremen over them to keep the people working.
