이스라엘 사람들이 할례를 받다
5 이렇게 주께서 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 그들이 요단 강을 다 건너기까지 그 강물을 마르게 하셨다. 그 소식을 들은 요단 강 서쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 모든 왕과 지중해 연안의 모든 가나안 왕의 심장이 녹아 버렸다. 그들은 감히 이스라엘 백성과 맞서 싸울 용기를 내지 못하였다.
2 그때에 주께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “부싯돌로 칼을 만들어 이스라엘 가운데 아직 할례를 받지 않은 남자들에게 다시[a] 할례를 베풀어라.” 3 그리하여 여호수아는 부싯돌로 칼을 만들어, 기브앗하아라롯[b]에서 이스라엘 남자들에게 할례를 베풀었다.
4 여호수아가 그들에게 할례를 베푼 까닭은 이러하다. 이집트에서 나온 이스라엘 백성 가운데 전쟁에 나가 싸울 수 있는 용사는 이집트를 떠나 광야를 지나는 동안에 모두 죽었다. 5 그런데 이집트에서 나온 백성은 모두 할례를 받았으나, 광야를 지나는 동안에 태어난 백성은 아무도 할례를 받지 못하였다. 6 이스라엘 백성이 사십 년 동안 광야를 이리저리 떠도는 동안 이집트에서 나온 용사들은 다 죽었다. 그들이 죽은 것은 그들이 주께 순종하지 않았기 때문이다. 주께서는 그들의 조상에게 주시마고 엄숙하게 약속하신 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을, 그들은 보지 못하게 하시겠다고 다짐하셨다. 7 그리하여 주께서는 그들 대신에 그들의 후손을 일으키셨는데, 바로 이 사람들이 여호수아에게서 할례를 받았다. 그들은 광야를 떠도는 동안 할례를 받지 않았었다.
8 백성이 모두 할례를 받고 나서 상처가 다 아물 때까지 그들은 진을 치고 있던 곳에 그대로 머물렀다.
가나안에서의 첫 번째 유월절
9 그때에 하나님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 이집트에서 받은 수치를 내가 오늘 다 없애 버렸다.” 그리하여 그곳은 지금까지도 길갈[c]이라 불리고 있다.
10 이스라엘 백성은 여리고 평원에 있는 길갈에 진을 치고 있는 동안 그 달 십사일 저녁에 유월절을 지켰다. 11 유월절 다음날에 그들은 그 땅에서 난 곡식을 먹었다. 그들이 먹은 것은 누룩을 넣지 않고 만든 빵과 볶은 곡식이었다. 12 그들이 그 땅에서 난 것을 먹은 다음 날 아침부터 만나가 그쳤다. 이스라엘 백성이 그 해에 가나안 땅에서 나는 곡식을 먹게 되자 더는 그들이 먹을 만나가 내리지 않았다.
13 여호수아가 여리고에 가까이 갔을 때에 눈을 들어 보니 한 남자가 손에 칼을 빼들고 앞에 서 있었다. 여호수아가 그에게 다가가서 물었다. “당신은 우리 편입니까? 아니면 우리 적의 편입니까?” 14 그 남자가 대답하였다. “그 어떤 편도 아니다. 나는 단지 주의 군대의 총사령관으로서 이곳에 왔다.” 그러자 여호수아가 땅에 얼굴을 대고 엎드리고 물었다. “내 주께서는 종에게 무슨 말씀을 전하려 하시는지요?” 15 그러자 주의 군대의 총사령관이 대답하였다. “네가 지금 서 있는 곳은 거룩하니 네 신을 벗어라.” 여호수아는 그가 시키는 대로 하였다.

길갈에서 베푼 할례
5 요단 서쪽 지방의 모든 아모리 사람의 왕들과 지중해 연안의 모든 가나안 왕 들이 여호와께서 요단 강물을 말리셔서 이스라엘 백성이 건너왔다는 소식을 듣고 두려워 떨며 당황하였다.
2 그때 여호와께서 여호수아에게 부싯돌로 칼을 만들어 이스라엘 남자의 포피를 자르라고 말씀하셨다.
3 그래서 여호수아는 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 부싯돌로 칼을 만들어 ‘할례산’ 이라고 하는 곳에서 이스라엘 모든 남자의 포피를 잘랐다.
4-5 여호수아가 이렇게 한 것은 이집트에서 나온 모든 남자들이 이미 포피를 베어 할례를 받았으나 전쟁에 나가 싸울 수 있는 사람들은 광야 생활 도중에 모두 죽었고 그 이후에 태어난 남자들은 아무도 포피를 자르지 않았기 때문이었다.
6 이스라엘 백성은 이집트에서 나온 모든 군인들이 다 죽을 때까지 광야에서 40년 동안 방황하였다. 그들이 여호와께 순종하지 않았기 때문에 여호와께서는 그들의 조상들에게 주겠다고 약속하신 기름지고 비옥한 땅에 그들이 들어가지 못할 것이라고 말씀하셨다.
7 여호수아가 지금 포피를 자르는 이 사람들은 그들의 대를 이은 후손들이다. 이들은 도중에 포피를 자를 기회가 없어서 할례를 받지 못하였다.
8 포피를 자르는 일이 끝나자 모든 백성들은 각자 상처가 아물 때까지 자기 천막에 머물러 있었다.
9 그때 여호와께서 여호수아에게 “내가 오늘 이집트에서 종살이하던 너희 수치를 제거하였다” 하고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 그 곳 이름을 [a]‘길갈’ 이라고 불렀으며 지금도 그렇게 불려지고 있다.
10 이스라엘 백성은 여리고 평야의 길갈에 진을 치고 있으면서 그 달, 곧 월 14일 저녁에 유월절을 지켰다.
11 그리고 그 다음날 그들은 가나안 땅에 들어온 후 처음으로 그 땅의 농작물을 먹었는데 그것은 볶은 곡식과 누룩을 넣지 않고 만든 빵이었다.
12 그 땅의 곡식을 먹은 그 다음날부터는 만나가 내리지 않았다. 그래서 그 후로 이스라엘 백성은 만나를 두 번 다시 볼 수 없었고 그 해부터 가나안 땅에서 나는 양식을 먹고 살았다.
여호와의 군대 총사령관
13 여호수아는 여리고에 가까이 갔을 때 갑자기 한 사람이 칼을 빼들고 자기 앞에 나타난 것을 보았다. 그래서 여호수아는 그에게 다가가서 “너는 우군이냐, 적군이냐?” 하고 물었다.
14 그러자 그가 이렇게 대답하였다. “나는 우군도 아니고 적군도 아니다. 나는 여호와의 군대 총사령관으로 이 곳에 왔다.” 그래서 여호수아는 땅에 엎드려 그에게 절하며 “주의 종에게 무슨 말씀을 하려고 하십니까?” 하고 물었다.
15 그때 여호와 군대의 총사령관이 여호수아에게 “너는 신을 벗어라. 네가 선 곳은 거룩한 땅이다” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 여호수아는 그대로 하였다.

5 And it cometh to pass when all the kings of the Amorite which [are] beyond the Jordan, towards the sea, and all the kings of the Canaanite which [are] by the sea, hear how that Jehovah hath dried up the waters of the Jordan at the presence of the sons of Israel till their passing over, that their heart is melted, and there hath not been in them any more spirit because of the presence of the sons of Israel.
2 At that time said Jehovah unto Joshua, `Make for thee knives of flint, and turn back, circumcise the sons of Israel a second time;'
3 and Joshua maketh for him knives of flint, and circumciseth the sons of Israel at the height of the foreskins.
4 And this [is] the thing [for] which Joshua circumciseth [them]: all the people who are coming out of Egypt, who are males, all the men of war have died in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out of Egypt,
5 for all the people who are coming out were circumcised, and all the people who [are] born in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out from Egypt, they have not circumcised;
6 for forty years have the sons of Israel gone in the wilderness, till all the nation of the men of war who are coming out of Egypt, who hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah, to whom Jehovah hath sworn not to show them the land which Jehovah sware to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey, are consumed;
7 and their sons He raised up in their stead, them hath Joshua circumcised, for they have been uncircumcised, for they have not circumcised them in the way.
8 And it cometh to pass when all the nation have completed to be circumcised, that they abide in their places in the camp till their recovering;
9 and Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `To-day I have rolled the reproach of Egypt from off you;' and [one] calleth the name of that place Gilgal unto this day.
10 And the sons of Israel encamp in Gilgal, and make the passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho;
11 and they eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow of the passover, unleavened things and roasted [corn], in this self-same day;
12 and the manna doth cease on the morrow in their eating of the old corn of the land, and there hath been no more manna to the sons of Israel, and they eat of the increase of the land of Canaan in that year.
13 And it cometh to pass in Joshua's being by Jericho, that he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, one standing over-against him, and his drawn sword in his hand, and Joshua goeth unto him, and saith to him, `Art thou for us or for our adversaries?'
14 And He saith, `No, for I [am] Prince of Jehovah's host; now I have come;' and Joshua falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith to Him, `What is my Lord speaking unto His servant?'
15 And the Prince of Jehovah's host saith unto Joshua, `Cast off thy shoe from off thy foot, for the place on which thou art standing is holy;' and Joshua doth so;

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear(B) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives(C) and circumcise(D) the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]
4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(E)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(F) 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(G) forty years(H) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(I) a land flowing with milk and honey.(J) 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(K)
9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c](L) to this day.
10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(M) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(N) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(O) unleavened bread(P) and roasted grain.(Q) 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(R)
The Fall of Jericho
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(S) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(T) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown(U) to the ground(V) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”
15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(W) And Joshua did so.

2 Por aquellos días dijo el Señor a Josué:
— Hazte unos cuchillos de pedernal y circuncida por segunda vez a los israelitas.
3 Así lo hizo Josué y circuncidó a los israelitas en el Collado de los Prepucios. 4 El motivo por el que Josué practicó esta circuncisión fue que toda la población masculina salida de Egipto y útil para la guerra, había muerto en el desierto después de salir de Egipto, mientras iban de camino; 5 esta era una población que estaba ya circuncidada. Pero la gente nacida mientras iban de camino por el desierto después de salir de Egipto, no había sido circuncidada. 6 Los israelitas, en efecto, anduvieron por el desierto durante cuarenta años, hasta que perecieron todos los hombres útiles para la guerra que habían salido de Egipto. — Hoy les he quitado a ustedes de encima el oprobio de Egipto.
Por eso aquel lugar recibió el nombre de Guilgal y todavía se llama así.
Celebración de la Pascua
10 Los israelitas acamparon en Guilgal y el día catorce de aquel mes, al atardecer, celebraron allí la Pascua, en la llanura de Jericó. 11 A partir del día siguiente a la celebración de la Pascua comieron ya de los productos del país: panes sin levadura y espigas tostadas. 12 Desde ese mismo día en que comenzaron a comer de los productos del país, cesó el maná para los israelitas que, ya aquel año, se alimentaron de los productos de la tierra de Canaán.
Aparición del Señor a Josué
13 Estando ya cerca de Jericó, Josué alzó los ojos y vio enfrente a un hombre de pie con una espada desenvainada en la mano. Josué se acercó a él y le preguntó:
— ¿Eres amigo o enemigo?
14 Respondió el interpelado:
— Yo soy el jefe del ejército del Señor y acabo de llegar.
Cayó Josué rostro en tierra, lo adoró y le preguntó:
— ¿Qué manda mi Señor a su siervo?
15 El jefe del ejército del Señor respondió a Josué:
— Quítate las sandalias de los pies, porque el lugar que pisas es sagrado.
Y Josué lo hizo así.
