그리스도가 무엇보다 중요하다
3 끝으로 형제자매 여러분, 주 안에서 기뻐하십시오. 나는 여러분에게 같은 내용을 다시 써 보내려 합니다. 이 일이 내게는 조금도 힘들지 않고, 여러분을 위해서는 안전장치가 됩니다. 2 악한 일을 하는 자들을 조심하십시오. 그들은 개와 같습니다. 이방인 여러분도 몸의 일부를 잘라내는 할례를 받아야 한다고 주장하는 자들을 조심하라는 말입니다. 3 우리는 성령의 도우심을 받아 하나님께 예배드리고, 그리스도 예수를 자랑하고, 육적인[a] 것을 의지하지 않습니다. 그러니 우리야말로 참 할례[b]를 받은 사람들입니다. 4 하기야 나도 육적인 것을 의지할 만합니다. 어떤 사람이 육적인 것을 자랑하려 든다면, 내게는 더 많은 자랑거리가 있습니다. 5 나는 태어난 지 여드레 만에 할례를 받았습니다. 나는 이스라엘 사람이요, 베냐민 가문 출신입니다. 그리고 부모님도 나도 모두 순수한 히브리 사람[c]입니다. 모세의 율법을 두고 말한다면, 나는 바리새파에 속한 사람으로, 율법을 엄격하게 지켰습니다. 6 율법에 대한 열정으로 말하면, 교회를 박해할 정도로 뜨거웠습니다. 그리고 율법을 지킴으로써 하나님께서 받아 주실 만한 사람이 된다면, 나는 누구에게도 흠 잡힐 데가 없었습니다.
7 한때 내게 유익한 것으로 여기던 이 모든 것을, 지금은 그리스도 때문에 쓸모없는 것으로 여깁니다. 8 그뿐 아니라 나는 그리스도 이외의 모든 것을 다 쓸모없는 것으로 여깁니다. 예수 그리스도, 내 주님을 아는 것이 내게는 다른 어떤 것보다 소중하기 때문입니다. 나는 그분 때문에 모든 것을 기쁘게 버렸습니다. 그리스도를 얻기 위해서는 그 모든 것을 쓰레기[d]로 여깁니다. 9 이렇게 하여 나는 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 그리스도 안에서 나는 하나님께서 받아 주실 만한 사람이 됩니다. 그것은, 내가 율법을 지킴으로써 되는 일이 아니라, 믿음을 통하여 하나님께로부터 오는 선물입니다. 하나님께서는 그리스도를 믿는 나의 믿음을 통하여 나를 당신께서 받아 주실 만한 사람으로 여겨 주시는 것입니다. 10 나는 그리스도를 알고 싶습니다. 그분을 죽음에서 일으키신 능력을 체험하고, 그분이 겪으셨던 고난을 나누어 겪고, 그분의 죽음을 본받고 싶습니다. 11 그렇게 하여, 나도 어떻게 해서든 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살아나 부활에 이르고 싶습니다.
목표를 향해 달려라
12 내가 이미 이 모든 것을 다 이루었다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 또 내가 완전한 사람이 되었다는 뜻도 아닙니다. 다만 그것을 붙잡으려고 힘써 나아가고 있을 뿐입니다. 그것이, 나를 사로잡아 당신의 사람으로 삼아 주신 그리스도 예수께서 바라시는 것입니다. 13 형제자매 여러분, 나는 나 자신이 아직 그것을 붙잡았다고는 생각하지 않습니다. 내가 하는 일은 오직 한 가지입니다. 곧 지나간 일은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 향하여, 14 상을 받기 위해 목표를 향해 힘써 나아가는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 그 상을 주시려고 그리스도 예수를 통하여 나를 하늘로 부르셨습니다.
15 우리 가운데 영적으로 성숙한 사람은 모두 이와 같은 생각을 가지고 살아야 합니다. 혹 여러분이 다르게 생각하는 점이 있더라도, 하나님께서는 그것까지도 밝히 깨닫게 해 주실 것입니다. 16 다만 우리는 이미 배워서 알고 있는 진리를 굳게 붙들고 살도록 합시다.
17 형제자매 여러분, 다 함께 나를 본받으십시오. 그리고 우리를 본보기로 삼고 따르는 사람들을 눈여겨보십시오. 18 전에도 여러 번 내가 여러분에게 말한 것을 지금 또 눈물을 흘리며 말합니다만, 많은 사람이 그리스도의 십자가의 원수가 되어 살고 있습니다. 19 그런 사람들은 멸망을 향해 가고 있습니다. 그들의 하나님은 자신들의 육체적인 욕망입니다. 그들은 자신들의 부끄러운 짓을 오히려 자랑거리로 여깁니다. 그리고 그들의 마음은 온통 세상일에만 쏠려 있습니다. 20 그러나 우리는 하늘의 시민입니다. 우리는 지금 우리를 구해 주실 주 예수 그리스도께서 하늘에서 오시기를 기다리고 있습니다. 21 그분은 모든 것을 당신에게 복종시킬 수 있는 능력으로, 우리의 비천한 몸을 변화시켜 주실 것입니다. 그리하여 우리의 몸이 그분의 몸과 같은 영광스러운 몸이 되게 하실 것입니다.

3 Finally, my brethren, (A)rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.
2 (B)Beware of dogs, beware of (C)evil workers, (D)beware of the mutilation! 3 For we are (E)the circumcision, (F)who worship [a]God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, 4 though (G)I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I (H)more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, (I)of the tribe of Benjamin, (J)a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, (K)a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, (L)persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But (M)what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss (N)for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having (O)my own righteousness, which is from the law, but (P)that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the (Q)power of His resurrection, and (R)the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may (S)attain[b] to the resurrection from the dead.
Pressing Toward the Goal
12 Not that I have already (T)attained,[c] or am already (U)perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [d]apprehended; but one thing I do, (V)forgetting those things which are behind and (W)reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 (X)I press toward the goal for the prize of (Y)the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Therefore let us, as many as are (Z)mature, (AA)have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, (AB)God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already [e]attained, (AC)let us walk (AD)by the same [f]rule, let us be of the same mind.
Our Citizenship in Heaven
17 Brethren, (AE)join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as (AF)you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are (AG)the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 (AH)whose end is destruction, (AI)whose god is their belly, and (AJ)whose glory is in their shame—(AK)who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For (AL)our citizenship is in heaven, (AM)from which we also (AN)eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (AO)who will transform our lowly body that it may be (AP)conformed to His glorious body, (AQ)according to the working by which He is able even to (AR)subdue all things to Himself.

The Importance of Christ
3 My brothers and sisters, be full of joy in the Lord. It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it will help you to be more ready. 2 Watch out for those who do evil, who are like dogs, who demand to cut[a] the body. 3 We are the ones who are truly circumcised. We worship God through his Spirit, and our pride is in Christ Jesus. We do not put trust in ourselves or anything we can do, 4 although I might be able to put trust in myself. If anyone thinks he has a reason to trust in himself, he should know that I have greater reason for trusting in myself. 5 I was circumcised eight days after my birth. I am from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin. I am a Hebrew, and my parents were Hebrews. I had a strict view of the law, which is why I became a Pharisee. 6 I was so enthusiastic I tried to hurt the church. No one could find fault with the way I obeyed the law of Moses. 7 Those things were important to me, but now I think they are worth nothing because of Christ. 8 Not only those things, but I think that all things are worth nothing compared with the greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him, I have lost all those things, and now I know they are worthless trash. This allows me to have Christ 9 and to belong to him. Now I am right with God, not because I followed the law, but because I believed in Christ. God uses my faith to make me right with him. 10 I want to know Christ and the power that raised him from the dead. I want to share in his sufferings and become like him in his death. 11 Then I have hope that I myself will be raised from the dead.
Continuing Toward Our Goal
12 I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I continue trying to reach it and to make it mine. Christ wants me to do that, which is the reason he made me his. 13 Brothers and sisters, I know that I have not yet reached that goal, but there is one thing I always do. Forgetting the past and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I keep trying to reach the goal and get the prize for which God called me through Christ to the life above.
15 All of us who are spiritually mature should think this way, too. And if there are things you do not agree with, God will make them clear to you. 16 But we should continue following the truth we already have.
17 Brothers and sisters, all of you should try to follow my example and to copy those who live the way we showed you. 18 Many people live like enemies of the cross of Christ. I have often told you about them, and it makes me cry to tell you about them now. 19 In the end, they will be destroyed. They do whatever their bodies want, they are proud of their shameful acts, and they think only about earthly things. 20 But our homeland is in heaven, and we are waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven. 21 By his power to rule all things, he will change our humble bodies and make them like his own glorious body.
