ஏரோது இயேசுவைப்பற்றி அறிதல்

14 அப்போது கலிலேயாவின் மன்னனாயிருந்த ஏரோது இயேசுவைப்பற்றி மக்கள் பேசியவைகளைக் கேள்வியுற்றான். 2 எனவே, ஏரோது தன் வேலைக்காரர்களிடம், “இந்த மனிதனே உண்மையில் யோவான் ஸ்நானகன். மரணத்திலிருந்து அவன் மீண்டும் எழுந்திருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். அதனால் தான் அவனால் இத்தகைய அற்புதங்களைச் செய்ய முடிகிறது” என்று கூறினான்.
யோவான் ஸ்நானகனின் மரணம்
3 இதற்கு முன்னர், ஏரோது யோவானைக் கைது செய்திருந்தான். ஏரோது யோவானைச் சங்கிலியால் கட்டி சிறையிலிட்டிருந்தான். ஏரோதியாளின் நிமித்தம் யோவானை ஏரோது கைது செய்திருந்தான். ஏரோதுவின் சகோதரன் பிலிப்புவின் மனைவி ஏரோதியாள். 4 “நீ ஏரோதியாளை உன்னோடு வைத்திருப்பது சரியல்ல” என்று யோவான் ஏரோதுவிடம் கூறியதால் யோவானை ஏரோது கைது செய்தான். 5 யோவான் தீர்க்கதரிசியென மக்கள் நம்பியிருந்தார்கள். எனவே, யோவானைக் கொல்ல விரும்பிய ஏரோது பயந்தான்.
6 ஏரோதின் பிறந்த நாளன்று, ஏரோதியாளின் குமாரத்தி ஏரோதுவையும் அவன் நண்பர்களையும் மகிழ்விக்க நடனமாடினாள். அவள் நடனத்தால் ஏரோது மிக மகிழ்ந்தான். 7 எனவே, அவள் எதை விரும்பினாலும் தருவதாக வாக்களித்தான். 8 தன் குமாரத்தி எதைக் கேட்கவேண்டும் என்பதை ஏரோதியாள் முன்னமே அறிவுறுத்தியிருந்தாள். ஆகவே, அவள் ஏரோதுவிடம், “எனக்கு யோவான்ஸ்நானகனின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்துத் தாருங்கள்” என்று கூறினாள்.

15 அன்று பிற்பகல், இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, “மனிதர் யாரும் இங்கு வசிப்பதில்லை. மேலும் நேரமுமாகிவிட்டது. மக்களைத் திருப்பி அனுப்புங்கள். அப்பொழுதுதான் அவர்கள் தங்கள் ஊர்களுக்குச் சென்று உணவை வாங்க முடியும்” என்று சொன்னார்கள்.
16 இயேசு, “மக்கள் திரும்பிச் செல்லவேண்டியத் தேவையில்லை. நீங்களே அவர்களுக்கு உணவு அளியுங்கள்” என்று பதிலளித்தார்.
17 அதற்குச் சீஷர்கள், “ஆனால், நம்மிடம் ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் தானே உள்ளன” என்று பதில் சொன்னார்கள்.
18 “அப்பத்தையும் மீனையும் என்னிடம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள்” என்று இயேசு கூறினார். 19 பிறகு, அங்கிருந்த மக்களை இயேசு புல்வெளியில் அமரச் சொன்னார். இயேசு ஐந்து அப்பங்களையும் இரண்டு மீன்களையும் கையிலெடுத்துக் கொண்டார். இயேசு வானத்தைப் பார்த்து அந்த உணவுக்காக தேவனுக்கு நன்றி சொன்னார். பின்னர் இயேசு அப்பங்களைச் சீஷர்களிடம் கொடுத்தார். சீஷர்கள் மக்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள். 20 மக்கள் அனைவரும் திருப்தியாக உண்டார்கள். மக்கள் உண்டது போக எஞ்சிய உணவைப் பன்னிரெண்டு கூடைகளில் நிரப்பினார்கள். 21 அங்கு சுமார் ஐயாயிரம் ஆண்கள் உணவு உண்டனர். மேலும், பல பெண்களும் குழந்தைகளும் கூட உணவு உண்டனர்.
இயேசு தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடத்தல்

22 பிறகு இயேசு தமது சீஷர்களைப் படகில் ஏறச் சொன்னார். இயேசு அவர்களை ஏரியின் மறுகரைக்குப் போகச் சொன்னார். தாம் பின்னர் வருவதாக அவர்களிடம் கூறினார். 23 மக்களிடம் விடை பெற்றுக்கொண்ட இயேசு குன்றின்மீது ஏறினார். தனியே பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதற்காக இயேசு அங்கு சென்றார். 24 அந்தச் சமயம், படகு ஏற்கெனவே வெகு தொலைவு சென்றிருந்தது. படகு அலைகளினால் தொல்லைகளுக்கு உள்ளானது. படகு சென்ற திசைக்கு எதிராகக் காற்று வீசியது.
25 அதிகாலை, மூன்று மணியிலிருந்து ஆறு மணிவரை இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் படகிலேயே இருந்தனர். இயேசு தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடந்து அவர்களிடம் வந்தார். 26 இயேசு தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடப்பதைக் கண்ட சீஷர்கள் பயந்து போனார்கள், “அது ஒரு ஆவிதான்” என்று அவர்கள் பயத்தில் அலறினார்கள்.
27 உடனே இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “கவலை கொள்ளாதீர்கள். நான்தான்! பயப்படாதீர்கள்” என்று கூறினார்.
28 அதற்குப் பேதுரு, “ஆண்டவரே, மெய்யாகவே இது நீர்தானென்றால், என்னை உம்மிடம் தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடந்துவரக் கட்டளையிடும்” என்று சொன்னான்.
29 இயேசு அவனிடம், “வா, பேதுரு” என்று கூறினார்.
பின்னர், பேதுரு படகிலிருந்து இறங்கி, தண்ணீரின் மேல் இயேசுவை நோக்கி நடந்தான். 30 ஆனால், தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடந்து சென்றபொழுது பேதுரு காற்றடிப்பதையும் அலைகள் வீசுவதையும் கண்டான். பயந்து போன பேதுரு, நீரில் மூழ்க ஆரம்பித்தான். உடனே பேதுரு, “ஆண்டவரே, என்னைக் காப்பாற்றும்” என்று அலறினான்.
31 உடனே இயேசு தமது கையால் பேதுருவைப் பற்றிக்கொண்டார். இயேசு அவனிடம், “உன் விசுவாசம் சிறியது. நீ ஏன் சந்தேகம் கொண்டாய்?” என்று சொன்னார்.
32 பேதுருவும் இயேசுவும் படகில் ஏறியதும் காற்று அமைதியடைந்தது. 33 அதன் பிறகு படகிலிருந்த சீஷர்கள் இயேசுவை வணங்கி, “உண்மையிலேயே நீர் தேவகுமாரன்தான்” என்று சொன்னார்கள்.
அநேக நோயாளிகளை இயேசு குணமாக்குதல்

How John the Baptist Was Killed(A)
14 At that time Herod, the ·ruler of Galilee [L tetrarch; see Luke 3:1], heard the reports about Jesus. 2 So he said to his servants, “·Jesus [L This] is John the Baptist, who has risen from the dead. That is why ·he can work these miracles [L miraculous powers are at work in him].”
3 ·Sometime before this, [L For] Herod had arrested John, ·tied him up [chained/bound him], and put him into prison. Herod did this because of Herodias, who had been the wife of Philip, Herod’s brother. 4 [L For] John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to ·be married to Herodias [have her].” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the ·people [crowd], because they ·believed John was [regarded John as] a prophet.
6 On Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, and she [greatly] pleased him. 7 So he ·promised [announced] with ·an oath [a vow] to give her anything she ·wanted [asked]. 8 ·Herodias told her daughter what to ask for, so [At her mother’s urging/prompting] she said to Herod, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” 9 Although King Herod was very ·sad [sorry; grieved; distressed], he had made a ·promise [vow; oath], and his dinner guests had heard him. So Herod ·ordered [commanded] that what she asked for be done. 10 He sent soldiers to the prison to cut off John’s head. 11 And they brought it on a platter and gave it to the girl, and she took it to her mother. 12 John’s ·followers [disciples] came and got his ·body [corpse] and buried it. Then they went and ·told [reported it to] Jesus.
More than Five Thousand Fed(B)
13 When Jesus heard what had happened to John, he left in a boat and went to a ·lonely [isolated; deserted] place by himself. But the crowds heard about it and followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he ·arrived [landed; came ashore], he saw a great crowd waiting. He ·felt sorry [had compassion] for them and healed those who were sick.
15 When it was evening, his ·followers [disciples] came to him and said, “·No one lives in this [This is a remote/deserted] place, and it is already late. Send the people away so they can go to the ·towns [villages] and buy food for themselves.”
16 But Jesus answered, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 They said to him, “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish.”
18 Jesus said, “Bring ·the bread and the fish [L them here] to me.” 19 Then he ·told [commanded; ordered] the people to ·sit down [recline] on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish and, looking to heaven, he ·thanked God for [blessed] the food. Jesus ·divided [broke] the bread and gave it to his ·followers [disciples], who gave it to the people. 20 All the people ate and were satisfied. Then ·the followers [L they] filled twelve baskets with the leftover pieces of food. 21 There were about five thousand men there who ate, not counting women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(C)
22 Immediately Jesus ·told [compelled; made] his ·followers [disciples] to get into the boat and go ahead of him ·across the lake [to the other side]. He stayed there to ·send the people home [dismiss the crowds]. 23 After he had ·sent them away [dismissed them], he went by himself up into the ·hills [mountain] to pray. ·It was late, and [When evening/night came,] Jesus was there alone. 24 By this time, the boat was already ·far away [L many stadia; C a stadion was about six hundred feet] from land. It was being ·hit [buffeted; beaten] by waves, because the wind was blowing against it.
25 ·Between three and six o’clock in the morning [L And in the fourth watch of the night], Jesus came to them, walking on the water. 26 When his ·followers [disciples] saw him walking on the water, they were ·afraid [terrified]. They said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus ·quickly [immediately] spoke to them, “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
28 Peter said, “Lord, if it is really you, then ·command [tell] me to come to you on the water.”
29 Jesus said, “Come.”
And Peter left the boat and walked on the water ·to [L and came toward] Jesus. 30 But when Peter saw the wind,[a] he became ·afraid [terrified] and began to sink. He shouted, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and ·caught [took hold of] Peter. Jesus said, “·Your faith is small [What little faith you have; T You of little faith]. Why did you doubt?”
32 After they got into the boat, the wind ·became calm [stopped; died down]. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped Jesus and said, “Truly you are the Son of God!”
Healings at Gennesaret(D)
34 When they had crossed the lake, they came to shore at Gennesaret. 35 When the ·people there [or men of that place] recognized Jesus, they ·told people [sent word] all around there that Jesus had come, and they brought all their sick to him. 36 They begged Jesus to let them touch just the ·edge [or tassels; see Num. 15:38–39] of his ·coat [cloak], and all who touched it were healed.

3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(E) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(F) 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(G) 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(H)
6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(I) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(J) Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(K)(L)
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(M) and healed their sick.(N)
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves(O) of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(P) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(Q)(R)
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(S) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(T) they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(U) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(V)
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(W) he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(X)
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(Y) and all who touched it were healed.

Herod's soldiers kill John the Baptist
14 At that time, people told Herod about the things that Jesus was doing.[a] 2 Herod said to his servants, ‘That man Jesus is really John the Baptist. John died but he has become alive again. That is the reason why this man can do these very powerful things.’
3 Before that, Herod had commanded his soldiers, ‘Take hold of John. Tie his hands and feet and put him in prison.’ Herod had done this because of his wife Herodias. Before Herod married her, she was the wife of Herod's brother Philip. 4 John had said to Herod, ‘Herodias was your brother's wife. So it is not right for you to have her as your wife.’[b]
5 Herod wanted to tell his soldiers that they must kill John. But the people thought that John was a prophet from God. So Herod was afraid to kill him.
6 One day, when it was Herod's birthday, he asked people to come to a special meal. The daughter of Herodias danced in front of him and his visitors. Her dance caused Herod to become very happy. 7 He said to the girl, ‘Ask me for anything that you want. I make a strong promise that I will give it to you.’ 8 Herodias suggested to her daughter, ‘Ask Herod to give you John's head.’ So the girl said to Herod, ‘Give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate.’ 9 Then Herod felt sad. But he had made a special promise to the girl, and his visitors had heard him. So he sent his men to do what she had asked for. 10 He said to a soldier, ‘Go to the prison and cut off John's head.’ 11 The soldier did this. Then he brought the head on a plate and he gave it to the girl. The girl took it and gave it to her mother.
12 After this, John's disciples went to the prison. They took away John's body and they buried it. Then they went and they told Jesus what had happened.
Jesus gives food to 5,000 men and their families
13 Jesus heard about what had happened to John. After that, he went away from that place. He sailed in a boat to a quiet place where he could be alone. But the crowd heard where Jesus had gone. So they left their towns and they went on land to the place where he was going. 14 Jesus got out of the boat. He saw a large crowd there on the shore. He felt sorry for them. There were sick people among them and he made them well again.
15 When it was almost evening, Jesus' disciples came to speak to him. They said to him, ‘We are in a place where there are no houses. It will soon be dark. Send the crowd away now, so that they can go to the villages near here. Then they can buy some food for themselves to eat.’
16 Jesus said to them, ‘The people do not need to go away. You should give them some food to eat.’
17 But the disciples said, ‘We only have five loaves of bread and two fish.’
18 ‘Bring the bread and fish here to me,’ Jesus said. 19 Then he said to the large crowd, ‘Sit down on the grass.’ He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and he thanked God for the bread and the fish. Then he broke the bread into pieces. He gave the pieces of bread to his disciples, and they gave them to the crowd. 20 Then everybody ate. They all had enough food and they were not hungry any more. Then the disciples picked up all the bits of food that people had not eaten. They filled 12 baskets with little bits of bread and fish. 21 About 5,000 men ate the bread and fish. Women and children also ate it with them.[c]
Jesus walks on the water
22 Immediately after this, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Get in the boat and sail across to the other side of the lake.’ Jesus said that he would first send the crowd away. Then he would also leave. 23 So Jesus sent the crowd away. After they had gone, he went up on a mountain alone to pray. When it became dark, he was still there alone. 24 At this time the boat with the disciples in it was in the middle of the lake. It was a long way from the land. The wind was blowing against the boat and the water was hitting it.
25 Then, when it was nearly dawn, Jesus walked on the water towards his disciples. 26 The disciples saw him walking on the water. They were very frightened. ‘It is a spirit,’ they said. They screamed loudly because they were afraid.
27 But immediately Jesus said to them. ‘Be brave! It is I. Do not be afraid.’
28 Peter replied, ‘Lord, is it really you? If it is you, say to me, “Come here! Walk to me on the water.” ’
29 Jesus said to him, ‘Come to me.’
So Peter got down out of the boat. He walked on the water and he came towards Jesus. 30 But then Peter saw that the wind was still blowing strongly. He became afraid and he began to go down into the water. He shouted to Jesus, ‘Lord, save me!’
31 Immediately, Jesus put out his hand and he took hold of Peter. He said to Peter, ‘You should trust me more than you do. Why did you not believe that I could help you?’
32 Jesus and Peter climbed up into the boat. Then the strong wind stopped. 33 The disciples who were in the boat went down on their knees. They praised Jesus and they said to him, ‘It is true. You are really the Son of God.’
34 They sailed across the lake and reached the shore at a place called Gennesaret.[d]
35 The people who lived in that place recognized Jesus. So they went to tell everyone who lived in places near there. People brought all their sick friends to him. 36 The sick people asked Jesus for help. They wanted to touch only the edge of his coat. Every sick person who touched him became well again.

- 14:1 Herod was the ruler in one of the four parts of Israel at that time.
- 14:4 Herodias had left Philip, her husband. Herod married her. So John told him what Moses had written in the Law. The Law said, ‘A man must not marry his brother's wife while his brother is still alive.’ Herod was not happy with John when he told him that. So Herod sent his men to put John in prison.
- 14:21 Only God could make five loaves of bread and two fish become enough to feed 5,000 men and their families. This showed them that God had caused Jesus to be very powerful.
- 14:34 Gennesaret was a part of the country on the west side of Lake Galilee.
