Disciples’ Literal New Testament

1 The[a] beginning of the good-news of [b] Jesus Christ, God’s Son

As Predicted By Isaiah, John The Baptist Came To Prepare The Way For The Messiah

2 Just as it has been written in Isaiah[c] the prophet— “Behold, I am sending-forth My messenger ahead of Your presence[d], who will make Your way ready: 3 A voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; be making His paths straight’”— 4 John came[e], the one baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And the whole Judean country[f] was going out to him, and all the people-of-Jerusalem. And they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River while confessing-out[g] their sins. 6 And John was dressed-in camel’s hair and a belt made-of-leather around his waist, and was eating locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was proclaiming, saying “The One more powerful than me is coming after me— of Whom I am not fit, having stooped, to untie the strap of His sandals. 8 I baptized you with[h] water, but He will baptize you with[i] the Holy Spirit”.

Jesus Is Baptized By John. God Expresses His Pleasure. Jesus Is Tempted By Satan

9 And it came about during those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 And immediately while ascending[j] out-of the water, He saw the heavens being divided[k] and the Spirit like a dove descending to[l] Him. 11 And a voice came from the heavens— “You are My beloved Son. With You I was[m] well-pleased”. 12 And immediately the Spirit sends Him out[n] into the wilderness. 13 And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan. And He was with the wild-beasts. And the angels were ministering[o] to Him.

After John Is Arrested, Jesus Comes To Galilee Proclaiming The Good News of God

14 Now after John was handed-over[p] [to prison], Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the good-news of [q] God 15 and saying that “The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn-near. Repent, and put-faith in the good-news”.

Jesus Calls The First Disciples

16 And while passing-by beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew (the brother of Simon), casting-a-net in the sea. For they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you become fishermen of people”. 18 And immediately, having left the nets, they followed Him. 19 And having gone on a little, He saw James (the son of Zebedee) and John (his brother)— they also in their boat, preparing[r] the nets. 20 And immediately He called them. And having left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired ones, they went after Him.

Jesus Casts Out a Demon. They Are All Astonished. The News of Him Spreads

21 And they proceed into Capernaum. And immediately, having entered into the synagogue on the Sabbath, He was teaching. 22 And they were astounded[s] at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was a man in their synagogue with[t] an unclean spirit. And he cried-out, 24 saying “What[u] do we have to do with You, Jesus from-Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know You, Who You are— the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying “Be silenced and come out of him”. 26 And the unclean spirit, having convulsed[v] him and called-out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all astonished, so that[w] they were discussing with themselves, saying “What is this? A new teaching based-on authority[x]! He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey Him!” 28 And the report about Him immediately went out everywhere into the whole surrounding-region of Galilee.

That Evening The Whole City of Capernaum Brings Their Sick To Him For Healing

29 And immediately, having gone out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now the mother-in-law of Simon was lying-down, being sick-with-fever. And immediately they speak to Him concerning her. 31 And having gone to her, He raised her, having taken-hold-of her hand. And the fever left her and she was serving them. 32 And having become evening, when the sun set[y], they were bringing to Him all the ones being ill and the ones being demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city was gathered-together at the door. 34 And He cured many being ill with various diseases. And He cast-out many demons, and was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew Him. 35 And having arisen early-in-the-morning[z], very late at-night, He went out and went away to a desolate[aa] place, and was praying there. 36 And Simon and the ones with him hunted-for Him, 37 and found Him. And they say to Him that “Everyone is seeking You”. 38 And He says to them, “Let us be going elsewhere, into the next towns, in order that I may proclaim there also. For I came-forth for this purpose”.

Jesus Heals a Leper, Who Spreads The Word of Him. People Come From All Directions

39 And He went proclaiming in their synagogues in all Galilee and casting out the demons. 40 And a leper comes to Him, appealing-to Him and kneeling, and saying to Him that “If You are willing, You are able to cleanse me”. 41 And having felt-deep-feelings [of compassion], having stretched-out His hand, He touched him. And He says to him, “I am willing[ab]. Be cleansed”. 42 And immediately the leprosy departed from him and he was cleansed. 43 And having sternly-commanded[ac] him, He immediately sent him out. 44 And He says to him, “See that you tell no one anything. But go, show yourself to the priest[ad], and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them”. 45 But the one, having gone forth, began to proclaim greatly and widely-spread the word, so that He was no longer able to enter openly into a city, but was outside at desolate places. And they were coming to Him from-all-directions.

The Preaching of John the Baptist

(Matthew 3.1-12; Luke 3.1-18; John 1.19-28)

1 This is the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a] 2 (A) It began just as God had said in the book written by Isaiah the prophet,

“I am sending my messenger
to get the way ready
    for you.
3 (B) In the desert
    someone is shouting,
‘Get the road ready
    for the Lord!
Make a straight path
    for him.’ ”

4 So John the Baptist showed up in the desert and told everyone, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.”

5 From all Judea and Jerusalem crowds of people went to John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

6 (C) John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.

7 John also told the people, “Someone more powerful is going to come. And I am not good enough even to stoop down and untie his sandals.[b] 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”

The Baptism of Jesus

(Matthew 3.13-17; Luke 3.21,22)

9 About that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10 As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Holy Spirit coming down to him like a dove. 11 (D) A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”

Jesus and Satan

(Matthew 4.1-11; Luke 4.1-13)

12 At once God's Spirit made Jesus go into the desert. 13 He stayed there for 40 days while Satan tested him. Jesus was with the wild animals, but angels took care of him.

Jesus Begins His Work

(Matthew 4.12-17; Luke 4.14,15)

14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God.[c] 15 (E) He said, “The time has come! God's kingdom will soon be here.[d] Turn back to God and believe the good news!”

Jesus Chooses Four Fishermen

(Matthew 4.18-22; Luke 5.1-11)

16 As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. 17 Jesus said to them, “Follow me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” 18 Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

19 Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. 20 At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with him.

A Man with an Evil Spirit

(Luke 4.31-37)

21 Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum. Then on the next Sabbath he went into the synagogue and started teaching. 22 (F) Everyone was amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, and not like the teachers of the Law of Moses. 23 Suddenly a man with an evil spirit[e] in him entered the synagogue and yelled, 24 “Jesus from Nazareth, what do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are God's Holy One.”

25 Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” 26 The spirit shook him. Then it gave a loud shout and left.

27 Everyone was completely surprised and kept saying to each other, “What is this? It must be some new kind of powerful teaching! Even the evil spirits obey him.” 28 News about Jesus quickly spread all over Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many People

(Matthew 8.14-17; Luke 4.38-41)

29 As soon as Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. 30 When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. 31 Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal.

32 That evening after sunset,[f] all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus. 33 In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house. 34 Jesus healed all kinds of terrible diseases and forced out a lot of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and he did not let them speak.

35 Very early the next morning before daylight, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. 36 Simon and the others started looking for him. 37 And when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.” 39 (G) Then Jesus went to their synagogues everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man

(Matthew 8.1-4; Luke 5.12-16)

40 A man with leprosy[g] came to Jesus and knelt down.[h] He begged, “You have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”

41 Jesus felt sorry for[i] the man. So he put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” 42 At once the man's leprosy disappeared, and he was well.

43 After Jesus strictly warned the man, he sent him on his way. 44 (H) He said, “Don't tell anyone about this. Just go and show the priest that you are well. Then take a gift to the temple as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”[j]

45 The man talked about it so much and told so many people, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town. He had to stay away from the towns, but people still came to him from everywhere.

  8. 1.40 and knelt down: These words are not in some manuscripts.
  9. 1.41 felt sorry for: Some manuscripts have “was angry with.”
  10. 1.44 everyone will know that you have been healed: People with leprosy had to be examined by a priest and told that they were well (that is, “clean”) before they could once again live a normal life in the Jewish community. The gift that Moses commanded was the sacrifice of some lambs together with flour mixed with olive oil.

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,[b](B) 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way”[c](C)—
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”[d](D)

4 And so John the Baptist(E) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(F) for the forgiveness of sins.(G) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,(H) and he ate locusts(I) and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.(J) 8 I baptize you with[e] water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.”(K)

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus(L)(M)

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth(N) in Galilee and was baptized by John(O) in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.(P) 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(Q) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(R)

12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days,(S) being tempted[g] by Satan.(T) He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Jesus Announces the Good News(U)

14 After John(V) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,(W) proclaiming the good news of God.(X) 15 “The time has come,”(Y) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe(Z) the good news!”(AA)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.(AB)

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AC)

21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.(AD) 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.(AE) 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us,(AF) Jesus of Nazareth?(AG) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”(AH)

25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”(AI) 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.(AJ)

27 The people were all so amazed(AK) that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region(AL) of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many(AM)(AN)

29 As soon as they left the synagogue,(AO) they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up.(AP) The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.(AQ) 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.(AR) He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.(AS)

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place(AT)

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.(AU) 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”(AV) 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues(AW) and driving out demons.(AX)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(AY)

40 A man with leprosy[h] came to him and begged him on his knees,(AZ) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant.[i] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.(BA) But go, show yourself to the priest(BB) and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,(BC) as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places.(BD) Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.(BE)
