18 சீஷர்கள் எப்போதும் பிரார்த்தனை செய்யவும், நம்பிக்கை இழக்காதிருக்கவும் இயேசு அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பித்தார். அவர்களுக்கு கற்றுத்தரும்பொருட்டு இயேசு பின்வரும் உவமையைப் பயன்படுத்தினார்: 2 “ஓர் ஊரில் ஒரு நியாயாதிபதி இருந்தான். அவன் தேவனைக் குறித்துக் கவலைப்படவில்லை. மக்கள் தன்னைப்பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறார்கள் என்பதைக் குறித்தும் அவன் அக்கறையற்றவனாக இருந்தான். 3 அதே ஊரில் ஒரு பெண் இருந்தாள். அவள் கணவன் இறந்து போனான். அந்தப் பெண் பல முறை நியாயாதிபதியிடம் வந்து, ‘எனக்குத் தீமை செய்கிற ஒரு மனிதன் உள்ளான். எனக்கு நீதி வழங்குங்கள்’ என்றாள். 4 அப்பெண்ணுக்கு உதவுவதற்கு நியாயாதிபதி விரும்பவில்லை. பல நாள்களுக்குப் பிறகு நியாயாதிபதி தனக்குள், ‘நான் தேவனைப்பற்றி அக்கறைகொள்வதில்லை. மக்கள் எண்ணுவதைக் குறித்தும் நான் அக்கறையில்லாதவனாக இருக்கிறேன். 5 ஆனால் இப்பெண் எனக்குத் தொந்தரவு தருகிறாள். அவள் கேட்பதை நான் செய்துவிட்டால் எனக்குத் தொல்லை கொடுப்பதை நிறுத்திவிடுவாள். அவள் விரும்புவதை நான் செய்யாவிட்டால் நான் சலிப்புறும் வரைக்கும் என்னைத் தொந்தரவு செய்வாள்’ என்று எண்ணினான்.
6 “தீய நியாயாதிபதி கூறியதைக் கவனமுடன் கேளுங்கள். 7 தேவனுடைய மனிதர்கள் இரவும் பகலும் அவரை வேண்டுகிறார்கள். தம் மக்களுக்கு தேவன் நியாயமானவற்றை வழங்குவார். தம் மக்களுக்குப் பதில் கூறுவதில் அவர் தயங்கமாட்டார். 8 நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். தேவன் அவரது மக்களுக்கு வேகமாக உதவி செய்வார். ஆனால் மனிதகுமாரன் மீண்டும் வரும்போது பூமியில் அவரை நம்புகின்ற மக்களைக் காண்பாரா?” என்று கர்த்தர் கேட்டார்.
தேவனுக்கு ஏற்றவன் யார்?
9 தங்களை மிக நல்லவர்களாக எண்ணிக்கொண்ட சில மனிதர்கள் இருந்தார்கள். பிறரைக் காட்டிலும் அவர்கள் மிக நல்லவர்கள் என்பதைப்போன்று அவர்கள் நடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அவர்களுக்குப் போதிப்பதற்கு இயேசு இந்த உவமையைப் பயன்படுத்தினார். 10 “ஒரு பரிசேயனும் வரி வசூலிப்பவனும் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். ஒருநாள் இருவரும் தேவாலயத்திற்குப் பிரார்த்தனை செய்யச் சென்றார்கள். 11 வரி வசூலிப்பவனுக்குச் சற்று தொலைவில் பரிசேயன் தனிமையாக நின்று கொண்டான். அவன், ‘தேவனே, நான் மற்ற மக்களைப் போன்று தீயவனாக இல்லாதிருப்பதால் உங்களுக்கு நன்றி சொல்கிறேன். திருடுகிற, ஏமாற்றுகிற, தீய ஒழுக்கத்தில் ஈடுபடுகிற மக்களைப் போன்றவன் அல்லன் நான். இந்த வரி வசூலிப்பவனைக் காட்டிலும் நான் நல்லவனாக இருப்பதால் உங்களுக்கு நன்றி சொல்கிறேன். 12 நான் நல்லவன். வாரத்தில் இரண்டு நாள் உபவாசம் இருக்கிறேன். நான் சம்பாதிப்பதில் பத்தில் ஒரு பங்கு தேவாலயத்திற்குக் கொடுத்துவிடுகிறேன்’ என்றான்.
13 “வரி வசூலிப்பவனும் தனிமையாகப் போய் நின்றான். அவன் பிரார்த்திக்கும்போது வானத்தைக் கூட ஏறெடுத்துப் பார்க்கவில்லை. அவன், ‘தேவனே, என்மேல் இரக்கமாக இருங்கள். நான் ஒரு பாவி’ என்று மார்பில் அடித்துக் கொண்டு கதறினான். 14 நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன், இந்த மனிதன் பிரார்த்தனை முடிந்து வீட்டுக்குச் செல்கையில், தேவனுக்கு உகந்தவனாகச் சென்றான். ஆனால் பிறரைக் காட்டிலும் நல்லவனாக நினைத்துக்கொண்ட பரிசேயனோ தேவனுக்கு உகந்தவனாக இருக்கவில்லை. தன்னை உயர்ந்தவனாகக் கருதிக்கொள்கிற எவனும் தாழ்த்தப்படுவான். ஆனால் தன்னைத் தாழ்த்திக்கொள்கிற எவனும் உயர்த்தப்படுவான்.”
குழந்தைகளும்-இயேசுவும்

15 இயேசு தொடுமாறு சிலர் தங்கள் சிறு குழந்தைகளை இயேசுவின் அருகில் கொண்டு வந்தார்கள். ஆனால் சீஷர்கள் இதைப் பார்த்ததும் மக்களை அதட்டித் தடுத்தார்கள். 16 ஆனால் இயேசு அந்தச் சிறு குழந்தைகளைத் தம்மிடம் அழைத்து, அதன் பின் சீஷர்களை நோக்கி, “சிறு குழந்தைகள் என்னிடம் வரட்டும். அவர்களைத் தடுக்காதீர்கள். ஏனெனில் இச்சிறு குழந்தைகளைப் போன்ற மக்களுக்கே தேவனின் இராஜ்யம் சொந்தமாக இருக்கிறது. 17 நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைச் சொல்கிறேன். சிறு குழந்தை எல்லாவற்றையும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதைப்போல் நீங்களும் தேவனின் இராஜ்யத்தை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டும். அல்லது நீங்கள் ஒருபோதும் அதற்குள் செல்ல முடியாது” என்றார்.
செல்வந்தனும் இயேசுவும்
(மத்தேயு 19:16-30; மாற்கு 10:17-31)
18 ஒரு யூத அதிகாரி இயேசுவிடம், “நல்ல போதகரே! நித்திய வாழ்வைப் பெற நான் என்ன செய்யவேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டான்.
19 இயேசு அவனை நோக்கி, “நீ ஏன் என்னை நல்லவனென்று அழைக்கிறாய்? தேவன் மட்டுமே நல்லவர். 20 ஆனால் நான் உன் கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்வேன். உனக்கு தேவனுடைய பிரமாணங்கள் தெரியும். ‘நீ தீய ஒழுக்கமாகிய பாவத்தைச் செய்யக்கூடாது. நீ ஒருவரையும் கொலை செய்யக்கூடாது. நீ எந்தப் பொருளையும் திருடக் கூடாது. பிறரைக் குறித்துப் பொய் சொல்லக் கூடாது. உனது தாயையும் தந்தையையும் மதிக்க வேண்டும்’”(A) என்றார்.
21 ஆனால் அந்த அதிகாரி, “சிறுவனாக இருந்தபோதே இக்கட்டளைகள் எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் கீழ்ப்படிந்து நடந்து வருகிறேன்” என்றான்.
22 இதைக் கேட்டதும் இயேசு அதிகாரியை நோக்கி, “நீ செய்ய வேண்டிய இன்னொரு காரியமும் இருக்கிறது. உன் பொருட்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் விற்று அந்தப் பணத்தை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடு. பரலோகத்தில் உனக்கு பலன் கிடைக்கும். பின்பு என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வா” என்றார். 23 ஆனால் அம்மனிதன் இதைக் கேட்டபோது மிகவும் வருத்தமடைந்தான். அவன் பெரிய பணக்காரன், எல்லாப் பணத்தையும் தானே வைத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பினான்.
24 அவன் வருத்தமடைந்ததை இயேசு கண்டபோது அவர், “செல்வந்தர் தேவனின் இராஜ்யத்தில் நுழைவது மிகவும் கடினமானது! 25 ஒட்டகம் ஊசியின் காதில் நுழைவது, செல்வந்தன் தேவனின் இராஜ்யத்தினுள் நுழைவதைக் காட்டிலும் எளிதாக இருக்கும்!” என்றார்.
மீட்கப்படக்கூடியவர் யார்?
26 மக்கள் இதைக் கேட்டபோது, “அப்படியானால் யார் இரட்சிக்கப்பட முடியும்?” என்றார்கள்.
27 பதிலாக இயேசு, “மக்களால் செய்யமுடியாத காரியங்களை தேவனால் செய்யமுடியும்” என்றார்.
28 பேதுரு “ஆண்டவரே, எங்களுக்குரிய அனைத்தையும் விட்டு உங்களைப் பின்பற்றினோமே” என்றான்.
29 இயேசு, “நான் உங்களுக்கு ஓர் உண்மையைச் சொல்கிறேன். வீடு, மனைவி, சகோதரர்கள், பெற்றோர் அல்லது குழந்தைகளை தேவனின் இராஜ்யத்துக்காகத் துறந்த ஒவ்வொருவனும் தான் விட்டவற்றைக் காட்டிலும் மிகுதியாகப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வான். 30 இந்த வாழ்வில் பல மடங்கு அதிகமாகப் பெறுவான். அவன் இறந்த பின்னரும் தேவனோடு நித்தியமாக வாழ்வான்” என்றார்.
இயேசு மரணத்தினின்று எழுவார்
(மத்தேயு 20:17-19; மாற்கு 10:32-34)
31 பின்னர், இயேசு பன்னிரண்டு சீஷர்களிடம் மட்டும் தனித்துப் பேசினார். இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “கவனியுங்கள், நாம் எருசலேமுக்கு போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். மனிதகுமாரனைக் குறித்து எழுதும்படியாக தேவன் தீர்க்கதரிசிகளுக்குக் கூறிய அனைத்தும் நிறைவேறும். 32 அவரது மக்களே அவருக்கு எதிராகத் திரும்பி அவரை யூதரல்லாத மக்களிடம் ஒப்படைப்பார்கள். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து நகைத்து, அவர் மீது உமிழ்வார்கள். அவரை இகழ்ந்து அவமானப்படுத்துவார்கள். 33 அவரைச் சாட்டையினால் அடித்து பின்னர் கொல்வார்கள். ஆனால் அவர் இறந்த பிறகு மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிரோடு மீண்டும் எழுவார்” என்றார். 34 சீஷர்கள் இதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள முயற்சி செய்தார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்களால் முடியவில்லை. அதன் பொருள் அவர்களுக்கு மறைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.
குருடனைக் குணமாக்குதல்

35 எரிகோ பட்டணத்திற்கு அருகே, இயேசு வந்தார். பாதையருகே ஒரு குருடன் உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தான். அவன் மக்களிடம் பணத்துக்காகப் பிச்சைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தான். 36 மக்கள் பாதையைக் கடந்து வருவதைக் கேட்டதும் அம்மனிதன், “என்ன நிகழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது?” எனக் கேட்டான்.
37 மக்கள் அவனுக்கு, “நாசரேத்தைச் சேர்ந்த இயேசு இவ்வழியைக் கடந்து வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்” என்று கூறினார்கள்.
38 குருடன் பரவசமுற்று, “இயேசுவே தாவீதின் குமாரனே! தயவுசெய்து எனக்கு உதவுங்கள்” என்றான்.
39 அக்கூட்டத்திற்கு முன்னால் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்த மக்கள் அக்குருடனை அதட்டினார்கள். அவனைப் பேசாதிருக்கும்படியாகக் கூறினார்கள். ஆனால் அக்குருடன் இன்னும் அதிகமாகச் சத்தமிட்டவாறே, “தாவீதின் குமாரனே! தயவுசெய்து எனக்கு உதவுங்கள்” என்றான்.
40 இயேசு, “அந்தக் குருடனை என்னிடம் அழைத்து வாருங்கள்” என்று சொன்னபடி அங்கேயே நின்றுவிட்டார். அக்குருடன் அருகே வந்தபோது இயேசு அவனை நோக்கி, 41 “நான் உனக்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டுமென விரும்புகிறாய்?” என்று கேட்டார்.
குருடன், “ஐயா, நான் பார்வையடைய விரும்புகிறேன்” என்றான்.
42 இயேசு அவனை நோக்கி, “உன் பார்வையை மீண்டும் பெறுவாய்! நீ விசுவாசித்ததால் குணம் பெற்றாய்” என்றார்.
43 அப்போது அம்மனிதனால் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. அவன் தேவனுக்கு நன்றி கூறியவாறே இயேசுவைத் தொடர்ந்தான். இதைக் கண்ட எல்லா மக்களும் நடந்ததற்காக தேவனை வாழ்த்தினர்.

18 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.
6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
15 And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?
27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
28 Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.
29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake,
30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
31 Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:
33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
35 And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:
36 And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.
37 And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.
38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.
39 And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.
40 And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,
41 Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
42 And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.

Chapter 18
The Parable of the Importunate Widow.[a] 1 Then Jesus told them a parable about the need for them to pray always and never to lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor had any respect for people. 3 In that same town there was a widow who kept coming to him and pleading, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 “For a long time he refused her request, but finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I neither fear God nor have any respect for people, 5 yet because this widow keeps pestering me, I will see to it that she gets justice. Otherwise, she will keep coming and wear me out.’ ”
6 Then the Lord said, “You have heard what the unjust judge says. 7 Will not God, therefore, grant justice to his elect who cry out to him day and night? Will he delay in answering their pleas? 8 I tell you, he will grant them justice quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.[b] 9 He also told the following parable to some people who prided themselves about their own righteousness and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and said this prayer to himself: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and pay tithes on all my income.’
13 “The tax collector, however, stood some distance away and would not even raise his eyes to heaven. Rather, he kept beating his breast as he said, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’ 14 This man, I tell you, returned to his home justified, whereas the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
15 Jesus Blesses the Children.[c] People were bringing even infants to Jesus so that he might touch them. When the disciples observed this, they rebuked them. 16 However, Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them. For it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 17 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
18 The Rich Young Man.[d]A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery. Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Honor your father and your mother.’ ”
21 The man replied, “I have kept all these since I was a child.” 22 On hearing this, Jesus said to him, “You need to do one further thing. Sell everything you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard this, he became sad, because he was very rich.
24 Danger of Riches. Jesus looked at him and said, “How difficult it is for those who are rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard this asked, “Then who can be saved?” 27 He replied, “What is impossible for men is possible for God.”
28 The Reward of Renunciation. Peter said to him, “We have given up our homes to follow you.” 29 Jesus replied, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 who will not receive many times as much in this age, and eternal life in the age to come.”
31 Jesus Predicts His Passion a Third Time.[e] Then Jesus took the Twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are now going up to Jerusalem, and everything that has been written by the Prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon. 33 After they have scourged him, they will put him to death, and on the third day he will rise again.”
34 But they understood nothing of this. Its meaning remained obscure to them, and they failed to comprehend what he was telling them.
35 Jesus Heals a Blind Man.[f] As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going past, he inquired what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” 39 The people in front rebuked him and ordered him to be silent, but he only shouted all the louder, “Son of David, have pity on me!”
40 Jesus stopped and ordered that the man be brought to him. And when he had come near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” He answered, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” 42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight. Your faith has made you well.” 43 Immediately, he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. And all the people who witnessed this also gave praise to God.

- Luke 18:1 We might ask whether prayer is useless or whether it is unfitting to remain insistent in God’s presence. This parable recommends a tenacious persistence. If the Lord is tardy in coming or in responding, it is to allow time for conversion and for faith. But the prayer of believers is not a cry in the wind. It is especially necessary during the end times, which will be a great trial for the faith and for trust in the Lord.
- Luke 18:9 What Jesus criticizes is not the Pharisee’s ascetical effort but his sense of self-sufficiency before God, himself, and other human beings, and his harshness toward others. On the other hand, Jesus does not approve of the everyday behavior of the tax collector, but offers his sincerity, humility, and repentance as an example. God’s goodness bewilders us: from it sinners can expect compassion and grace; salvation is an unmerited and unexpected gift.
- Luke 18:15 One must receive the kingdom as a little child, that is, as a poor person who is regarded as insignificant in society and who awaits everything from its father. One can never stop being struck by this insistence of Jesus concerning the spirit of childhood. It is a reversal of the daily norms of our lives (see Lk 9:46-48).
- Luke 18:18 A rich young man is animated by the desire for a more personal commitment, going beyond the simple observance of the ten commandments. However, he cannot resolve himself to the first radical gesture—giving up his possessions. The Christian community retained this example as a warning. Riches, as Luke often stresses, are an obstacle to salvation. In a life encumbered by riches, there is no place for the Lord. Yet the Lord fills to the brim whoever has the courage to prefer him to everything else. Such courage is the gift of God (see Lk 12:33).
- Luke 18:31 Six times in Luke’s Gospel Jesus refers to his tragic end, so deeply does this affect his entire work. The Prophets had borne witness to it beforehand.
- Luke 18:35 The community retains this episode as an example of faith and witness to Jesus, Son of David, that is, the people’s Messiah and Savior.

18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men (A)always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [a]regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [b]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 (B)yet because this widow troubles me I will [c]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”
6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And (C)shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I tell you (D)that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 Also He spoke this parable to some (E)who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (F)stood and prayed thus with himself, (G)‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; (H)for everyone who exalts himself will be [d]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Jesus Blesses Little Children(I)
15 (J)Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (K)of such is the kingdom of God. 17 (L)Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”
Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(M)
18 (N)Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but (O)One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: (P)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ (Q)‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”
21 And he said, “All (R)these things I have kept from my youth.”
22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. (S)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
With God All Things Are Possible(T)
24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, (U)“How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”
27 But He said, (V)“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”
28 (W)Then Peter said, “See, we have left [e]all and followed You.”
29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, (X)there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 (Y)who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”
Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(Z)
31 (AA)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things (AB)that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be [f]accomplished. 32 For (AC)He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”
34 (AD)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.
A Blind Man Receives His Sight(AE)
35 (AF)Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. 36 And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, (AG)Son of David, have mercy on me!”
39 Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
40 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, 41 saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”
42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; (AH)your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, (AI)glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
